Good place. My favorites are the Pho Ga and the House special fried rice. I got introduced to Pho a few years ago and since then have searched out and tried quite a few places. I do not have any expertise on running a restaurant, but the owner could seriously learn something from Pei Wei. Make this place a self-serve diner. I know it's not as easy as just purchasing a fountain machine and having people order from the counter, but it's a start... Based on the frustrations with the service, it's not a place I would like to frequent. Let's talk about the food. For the appetizers, the spring rolls tasted fresh and the eggrolls did not disappoint. I think being next door to an Asian market have its perks. The roll is just about the right diameter too. Where they fail is the peanut sauce and the nuoc cham, spicy fish sauce. They taste just like store-bought sauces thrown together. In the peanut sauce's case, it's just peanut butter, hoison sauce, crushed peanuts, and a hint of lime. I didn't taste garlic, chili paste (sriracha), or sesame oil. The garlic is very much needed. For the the nuoc cham, it's just diluted fish sauce and that rooster-brand garlic-chili sauce, which both are on every table, with a hint of lime. Once again, garlic is very much needed. They could also add some pickled carrots and radish to the nuoc cham too. Now, let's get to the Pho (pronounced "phuh"), Vietnamese Rice Noodle Soups. I had both the Pho Tai and the Pho Ga (beef and chicken respectively). One of the hardest thing to do is make a good broth. And this place has one of the best broth in town. Both their phos use the same broth, so if you have a thing against eating beef, you might want to avoid all Phos. I'm pretty sure that the broth is a combination of beef and chicken. The Pho Tai's thinly sliced beef is raw, but the beef will cook in the hot broth. The beef probably came from the store next door. The Pho Ga has pulled roasted chicken, that they most likely got from Costco. It's actually quite awesome! LOL. I believe that they put the leftover chicken bones and grease into their beef bone broth, making it rather delicious, albeit a lazy way to do it. But you can't argue with the results! It's good stuff! Pho Ga is also topped with fried garlic and onions. There's nothing really to talk about in the garnishes for the pho. It's just bean spouts, basil, culantro, sliced jalapenos, and lime. The vermicelli combo is good, but it's about average in this town. Once again, the problem comes down to the nuoc cham... NEED GARLIC! Luckily, the pickled vegetables are in the dish. The best place for vermicelli noodles is Green Bamboo, where the pork clearly tastes grilled with lemongrass and the shrimp is actually fresh. And, last, here comes the pork chop combo. There are essentially two paths to Vietnamese pork chops. One is lemongrass and the other is char sui (Chinese BBQ). Majority of Vietnamese restaurants in this town goes with char sui. This place is of the char sui branch, and it is the best in town at least just based on the pork chop. I just love a good char sui and this place certainly did not skimp on the sauce this time (surprisingly). I don't know how consistent it is, but at least for today, I just love it. What I didn't love is the pork-egg custard, the pork skins, and the rice. The pork-egg custard tastes like it sat out too long. The pork skin is also dry and needs salt and garlic powder (common theme here apparently). And the rice, well, shouldn't a Vietnamese restaurant use jasmine rice or broken rice? Here, they are just using regular Chinese rice. And I can't say more about that nuoc cham... It sounds like I'm being overly critical of this place. But the service here is so horrible that it just puts a bad taste in my mouth. When you're starting at 0 out of 5 in service, I'm am being extremely generous to give them 3 stars overall. Is their food 5 star quality (or at least a 5-star Yelp quality)? No, it's not even a 4! Missing garlic makes me cry!!! So why a 3? Because this place has some really good broth! And that's what's truly important of a Vietnamese restaurant. I'll be back for Bun Bo Hue, Banh Mi, and crepes. And I'll update this when that happens. read more

I enjoy coming to visit Memphis and sometimes need a break from heavy Memphian food. Pho So hit the spot and I'm so glad I discovered it on this work trip. I went for the basic rare steak pho and after a long day of travel it was just what I needed. Maybe this isn't a 5 star place when you're in the heart of Little Saigon hubs in California but for a really satisfying bowl of pho in Memphis, this is my new favorite spot. Great flavor! Fresh and fast! The owner was very accommodating! I read one review that said the pho doesn't even need the sauces for flavor! They are right! Just yum! I got my husband #42 vermicelli. He had an allergic reaction. I called the place to find out what was in it. They were all normal ingredients and it was made when I ordered it. We guess it was the fish sauce. Food was okay. Spring roll was plain. Pho had too much hoi (star anise flavoring) for my taste. It's edible not bad, but it's definitely not the best in town. Atmosphere of the restaurant was just an open room with tables. When I went, I saw the worker transport the meat that was in a regular opened cardboard box. He ended up dropping a few bones out of the box and continued to pick it up, put back in box, and bring to the kitchen. Keep it simple! A legit phò place! This unassuming place is large and the food is great. First time and I'm willing to go 4 stars because it's what I expected from this hole in the wall. #24 beef phò is where my experience starts. Coke sold in a can (always a minus for me). Just moved to Memphis from Los Angeles and have been coming here once a week. I didn't expect to find decent pho in Memphis, but I found it here. I also get the banh mi if i come on the weekends and take it home to eat later. You get a lot for the price. I was in the mood for shrimp egg fu young and they made it well! The restaurant used to be Chayo Praya, a Thai restaurant which was in business there several years ago. I personally would not dine in. I'm biased because I ate there when it was Chayo Praya and it was beautiful inside. My only complaint- they do not serve veggie spring rolls. read more

Our new favorite Vietnamese restaurant - a mere 80 miles away, but worth the trip! My husband could eat his weight in the fresh spring rolls, which have the most tender pork and fresh shrimp. The Pho here is unreal. You don't need to add the sriracha and hoisin. It is delicious on its own, the way it is supposed to be.

Hallelujah, after weeks and weeks of eating at bad neighborhood restaurants in Hickory Hill, I decided to try Pho So 8, next door to the Asian market off Winchester. I wasn't expecting much, but I was blown away by the Hunan Tofu I had for lunch. It's mostly a Vietnamese restaurant, but their $5.99 lunch menu is all Chinese. And the food was really, really good...and know that I'm a hard grader. The flavors were very delicate, and not heavy, like traditional Chinese food. And the portions were large too. I will definitely be back soon. And a note on the service, yes the service is not very good, but there is only one person taking orders, with a limited command of English. But who cares?
