    Fish Sauce Caramel Iced Coffee
    Michelle H.

Phe is a Vietnamese coffee shop that also sells banh mi on the weekends. I think this spot recently blew up which probably explains the reviews of the long lines. It seems to be a super small shop with limited resources, so plan your visit here accordingly. They have the outdoor seating that you see in Vietnam with the plastic stools and small tables. My friend grabbed their Fish Sauce Caramel Iced Coffee, which has been talked about a lot online. Unfortunately, it barely tasted like fish sauce which is what I was excited for. The iced coffee itself was still good, but I could have probably just gotten their regular iced coffee and paid less. I do want to come back to try their food in the future and to hopefully get a seat in those plastic stools for the vibes!

First, I love the coffee. I had the fish sauce caramel latte. It doesn't really have the fish sauce taste, probably blending so well with the coffee. It is an interesting concept, first time eating banh mi like eating shakshouka. The ingredients are flavorful but too salty. I needed more bread to go with it. One reviewer said you can have bread refills, but no staffs mentioned it. So we didn't get more bread. I recommended go line up 5-10 mins before opening on weekends. Otherwise, you would be on line for a long time.

Be prepared for a wait! We came right before opening and still had to wait 1.5 hours. You'll see most of the negative reviews are around the long wait, the actual food is pretty good and it's difficult to get this quality of food in NYC, hence the long lines and wait. Banh Mi Chaos are around $30 each and come with free bread refills. Coffees are around $7.50 each and taste excellent. There's no tipping so prices end up being reasonable. Food was amazing and filling, made with a level of precision unique to the Mam restaurants. You'll sit on plastic stools and in warm heat, but that's part of the fun. Overall amazing time and food!

Came here at 11:50 on Sunday and waited a little over an hour to get seated. For how long the line was, I would say it moves decently quick. There's only 1 thing on the menu and the food comes out quick!! Incredibly delicious and overall amazing service.

Waited ~2 hours during the weekend for a table for two. Will say that the operations of this so called restaurant are interesting... Saw this group sitting outside eating a vermicelli dish, yet our waiter told us that the only thing on the menu food wise is Bánh Mì Chảo. Saw a solo female go up and ask the waiter if there was a table for one instead of waiting in line like other normal, respectful people lol. They don't even have a food menu that states how much the Bánh Mì Chảo is so very odd, the only menu there is, is the drinks menu of the Viet coffee and the different iterations. The Bánh Mì Chảo is good but very rich and heavy and not worth $30 lol you can literally buy a banh mi and take it apart and make it look all fancy on a plate to help with the delulu-ness. The coffee is not anything worth writing home about, Le Gaz is much better in this department. All in all, one time for the one time but I was left very filled (by the carbs, you can also get refills on the bread) and thought the ratio of wait time and quality of the food / drinks and the pricing is very whack. The person I dined with here is Vietnamese and told me people back home are seated like this due to poverty, so kind of odd that Phe decided that the seating would be like this. Although we were seated indoors, we were right next to the coffee line - I think they're still figuring things out but the flow of that line was a blocker to the employees / customers who were inside.

While the food was delicious the service was disorganized and not the best. The open time was delayed even with a line down the block and once I was sat I saw so many empty tables but people still lined up waiting and I never got water or bread when I ran out. The weekend breakfast dish is absolutely delicious and worth trying but maybe when the lines aren't so bad.

Outside - plastic chairs reminiscent of dining outside in Vietnam!

Pretty solid Vietnamese breakfast / brunch platter. I believe this is the sister restaurant of "Mam" next door. What I appreciated is the true Vietnamese ambiance. If you've ever been to Vietnam, their glass enclosure at the entrance is very reminiscent of Banh Mi stands in Vietnam. The higher prices you pay are to support NYC rent (so temper your expectations don't expect Banh mi stall prices or Vietnam prices), quality supplies, and wages for labor - so expect $30 per Banh mi chao plate. Good thing they don't accept or charge tips because of this. The Banh mi was very atypical of a Vietnamese baguette - with a thin crispy exterior but pillow soft interior. I loved that they had Laughing cow cheese and pate in the plate. At the very least, stop by for their Ca Phe Muoi - I love Vietnamese salted coffee so much, I had it everyday when I was in Vietnam. It's arguably the best Vietnamese coffee in the city out of the coffee shops I've tried. Kinhfolk comes in at a very close second behind Phe. "Rất là ngon!"

Super yummy bahn mi, we went on a. Friday afternoon and waited 45 mins to get the bahn mi. They didn't have any of the plates thought, the bahn mi was the only food being served. I tried going in the afternoon on a Sunday and they were already sold out. The coffee was great though. I loved the fish sauce latter. The coffee took a while to make though. Very cool ambiance. Low seating like authentic Vietnam street food

Phe We waited in line for about half an hour on a Saturday afternoon. We were excited to try the coffee. My friend was looking forward to tasting the Banh Mi, while I was longing to try the dishes from Mam, as dish after dish from Mam passed by us while we waited in line. The smell wafting from each dish was incredible, and every plate looked absolutely delicious!!! We were able to snag outdoor seating at the back of the restaurant, which was quaint and featured low stools and tables, making for a cute and different experience. The indoor seating was nice as well and had a rustic café vibe to it. The service was quick, and our dishes came out promptly. We noticed another table enjoying dishes from Mam, which prompted us to ask if we could order from Mam as well, which is next door. Luckily, we were able to order to, which made the experience even better! We shared 3 dishes and ordered 2 coffees: * Mam Ca Phe (Fish Sauce Caramel): The coffee is strong, rich, and robust with a wonderfully roasted, nutty flavor. It's definitely not a fruit-forward coffee, which is a huge plus for me! It is quite strong at first, but once you stir it, it becomes nice and creamy, and the intensity mellows down into a well-balanced less bitter cup. It's perfectly sweetened, even though the fish sauce caramel was not really detectable. A must-try if you are a coffee lover! * Raw Surf Clam Salad: This dish was incredibly refreshing, nice and light with a strong taste of lemongrass, which made the dish very fragrant and flavorful. The clams were perfectly sized, meaty, tender, and infused with the flavors of lemongrass, fish sauce, and a nice hint of red chili. The white fungus was a nice touch and added a crisp texture to every flavorful bite. The sauce that the clams and white fungus were drenched in was so good that I literally wanted to drink it! It was simple but AMAZING! Even though it was a little heavy on the ginger for my personal taste, I didn't mind because the flavors came together beautifully and each bite was heavenly! The dish also had a nice tanginess to it, which was a refreshing awakening to the palate. It was absolutely delicious!!! A perfect dish for the summer and for those who can handle a little bit of heat. * Stuffed Snail: The dish had a nice presentation and was fun to eat. The stuffing was shaped into a meatball and had the distinct flavors of Vietnamese cuisine, including lemongrass, garlic, and ginger. The texture of the black fungus was a nice touch, adding a pleasant chew and bite. I only wish the proportion of snail in each meatball had been higher so there were even more of a pronounced bite. It was a fun dish to eat. Each meatball was wrapped around a stalk of lemongrass and tucked inside of a snail shell. All it needed was a gentle tug on the lemongrass to pull it out of the shell, followed by a dip into the delicious garlicky, peppery sauce it came with, and you've got a morsel bursting with flavor! The pepper in the sauce has a nice kick and adds so much flavor. Definitely dip it in the sauce! On its own, it's a little on the dry side, but with the sauce, it's delightful! * Banh Mi Chaos: A deconstructed version of banh mi that you put together yourself with the side of bread (free refills), pickled cucumbers, carrots, radish, and a yellow spread that Phe described as their own version of butter when asked. The dish is porky and rich. The slices of meat are drenched in a caramel-colored sauce and topped with a runny egg, which is perfect for dipping the bread. It also comes with a spoonful of pâté, a triangle of Laughing Cow cheese (which was a nice addition and very much enjoyed), slices of Vietnamese ham, and, last but not least, slices of hot dog, which added a nice smoky flavor. The bread was soft and pudgy but could have been crispier. It definitely has potential though. Overall, this was a fun experience, from the unique low seating to the food and excellent coffee! Our favorites were the Raw Surf Clam Salad, the Stuffed Snail, and of course, the coffee! We will definitely be back to try more of Phe's coffee and head over to Mam to try more of their menu!

I fear the hype was worth it :o I came on a Friday around 11:30 am, but the line was already so long! Waited ~45 min for the banh mi and ~5 min inside for the coffee. The line for the cafe is a LOT shorter - head straight inside past the long lines outside for banh mi and banh mi chao lol They bake their baguettes in house :0 the texture is insane crispy yet soft and chewy inside!! - Crispy pork belly banh mi ($14 post tax): 11/10, the pork belly is SO crispy (literally asmr). I don't usually go for pork belly bc I find it heavy and oily, but this was surprisingly light!! The sauce and everything was so flavorful. They ran out of the traditional sliced ham banh mi when I got to the front :( Would get again, but pretty pricey for a banh mi ngl - Mam (fish sauce caramel viet coffee): 9/10, the coffee is pretty strong, and the cream is yummy. Didn't really taste fish sauce, def more caramel flavor than anything. A little smaller than I expected. My viet roommate really loves this, and she's picky about her viet coffees. Overall solid viet coffee

Pretty decent but found it to be pretty pricy. They do give a lot of food though at $30. The drinks were pretty good and I liked the phe the most.

Finally got to try the banh mi.. it was very good and flavorful banh mi around $30!! Waited 30 mins for it.. tried the coconut coffeee and it was good ..not too sweet which is perfect for me .. I basically tried everything at this place and is worth trying it !!

Super good! Fish sauce not super strong and the coffee pretty much tastes like a salty cream coffee. If you go before they open Mam in the morning, you can sit inside at the tables. Once they open the restaurant they use the tables in the cafe for restaurant seating, so be aware that on the weekends in the afternoon, it will get really crowded and you probably can't sit inside.

I got the pho ($21.78), which is steep for pho, but I guess that's Midtown prices for you. The wait was a slog--over 20 minutes for a bowl of pho, which other Yelp reviews warned about. When it finally arrived, the soup lacked that authentic pho aroma, which was a letdown. On the plus side, the beef was fresh, and the reusable to-go bag was a nice touch. Decent, but the wait and price make it hard to love. Might try again if they speed things up.

I ordered "Plain Pho", which is described as just broth and noodles, no garnish or meat. After waiting 30 minutes, for what is literally the simplest item on the menu, the bowl is brought out and it's a bowl of broth with a couple slices of chicken. No noodles. When I inquired, the server told me it's because I ordered the Plain Pho... yea and I said it comes with noodles and broth. They told me they could get me noodles, but acted like they were doing me a favor by fetching noodles for me, which was quite offputting because the noodles were quite literally half of the dish I actually ordered. How does one wait half-an-hour at a very casual fast Vietnamese food place, for premade soup and noodles, and still have the order wrong? In the end, I did get my noodles and broth, but the fact that I had to spend this much time and also justify my request for noodles (which are part of the dish) is quite insane. I put this at 2 stars for now, because I enjoyed my first time. Hopefully the service will improve.

So when my family stumbled into Pho 39, a tiny spot with just a handful of tables tucked away from the chaos outside, it felt less like finding a restaurant and more like discovering a Rebel outpost that somehow survived undetected in the middle of Imperial territory. The menu is exactly what you'd expect from a solid Vietnamese spot: pho, combination rice plates, the usual lineup. We were ready to order and move on with our lives. Then we saw the tacos. Vietnamese tacos. On the menu. Sitting right there between the banh mi and the spring rolls like they'd always belonged. Nobody in my family said anything for a full three seconds, which for us is basically a standing ovation. We ordered the duck spring rolls to start, which were fresh, well packed, and disappeared faster than a starfighter in hyperspace. For the mains we went with the beef flank pho and the banh mi combination special. The pho had a clean, well developed broth that clearly had some time put into it, and the beef flank was tender enough to make you slow down and pay attention. The banh mi combo was solid, balanced, and hit all the right notes. We did not get the tacos this visit, which means we have a built in reason to return and nobody can argue with that logic. For a small room in the middle of one of the busiest cities on the planet, Pho 39 manages to feel genuinely calm and focused. Good food, good value, and a menu with enough surprises to keep things interesting. The Force is strong with this little spot.

The restaurant has an open-kitchen concept, which is nice because you can see the kitchen, but you can also feel the heat coming from it. With the front door left open, the summer heat was coming in as well, making it extremely hot inside. There were also quite a few flies circling around, which I'm assuming was partly due to the door being left open. That made the dining experience less comfortable, especially while eating. I would've given 5 stars for the food because it was delicious, but the heat, flies, and overall dining environment really took away from the experience.
