Food: The food is just okay here. I have been here several years ago and thought the food was very average but decided to come back and give it another try. I still find the food to be very average; there is much better Vietnamese food in NYC. I had The Madame Pho which is their classic pho dish with beef slices and meatballs. The broth was flavorful, but the flavor wasn't as deep as other Vietnamese restaurants. We also tried an appetizer (a crispy pancake with squid and bean sprouts inside) served with lettuce and mint for wrapping. This was also nothing special. There was nothing bad about the food at all, but it isn't special enough to make me want to return and also pay more in general for Vietnamese food. Having given it a second chance and still being unimpressed, I won't be returning here. There is much better Vietnamese food that is less expensive around the city. Service: Service was excellent, and we were greeted with a lot of smiles and warmth from all of the staff both going into the restaurant and leaving the restaurant. Our server was excellent and always around. She was very attentive. Ambiance: Decor and ambiance is very nice in this place. Tables are spaced very closely together, but seating is still comfortable. The restaurant is pretty narrow but can still accommodate both small and large groups. While this doesn't seem like the most authentic Vietnamese restaurant in the city, I do appreciate their modern take on classic food. I really do like the beef vermicelli bowl! I think the beef is nice and tender, and all the elements complement each other nicely, providing a fresh and hearty meal. I was also very impressed with the wings. The ambience inside is what you'd expect out of a somewhat tight, busy restaurant, but the service was great. Even when there's a long line, they do their best to move you in as fast as possible and accommodate you. Sometimes restaurants need time to improve, and Madame Vo is proof of this. When they first opened years ago, I left completely underwhelmed, with the flavors tasting muted and forgettable. At the time I had the kind of meal that made me wonder why others raved about it. I was confused by the hype back then, but returning recently felt like discovering an entirely new establishment. The banh xeo came out golden with turmeric, crispy edges and fresh herbs with nicely cooked shrimp. The garlic noodles were nice and springy. The rice cakes and grilled lemongrass chicken both hit bright flavor notes that Vietnamese food does so well. They seated us in this little back area that was great for my notoriously loud friend group. Some places just need time to hit their stride, work out the kinks, and find their voice. With the pickled vegetables and fish sauce, each bite possesses a burst of flavors. Portions are large, so I'd recommend sharing! (we split among 3 people) The vermicelli bowls are delicious as well. The meat is perfectly tender and vegetables are fresh. However, my only critique is that they could give more noodles... The garlic noodles were also delicious but not worth the premium price in my opinion. They are also on the heavier side, and can probably be shared by two people! Seating is limited with small tables placed close together so I wouldn't recommend choosing this spot for larger groups as it will get a little cramped. Servers are friendly and helpful. I have been to Madame Vo many times since it opened. I most recently went this week. The restaurant is long and narrow, with a lot of bench seating. There is a small bar. Service is always good. My favorite dishes here remain the Pho Chay and the Garlic Noodles. I always want to order other items on the menu, but I never want to sacrifice getting these two things. The Pho Chay is hands down the best vegetarian pho I have had anywhere, and I do crave it a fair bit. The garlic noodles are always packed with flavor, and I always order them to split with my dining partner. I came here twice, once when I picked up the Vermicelli noodle salad here for dinner and the other for a more sit down experience. The noodle salad I had was honestly delicious, I would highly recommend and it's a great item to get delivered. When my friend and I came here for dine in we shared a Bun Bo Hue, salty limeade, and a chicken wing platter. The wings were coated in this spicy, nutty, garlicky sauce that I still think about. I wish they sold that sauce separately since I would be putting it on everything. The noodle soup had really rich, meaty broth but I do need to come back here to try their actual pho. I love it here! The wait staff is so friendly and nice and very welcoming. I ordered the pan fried rice cake and the green papaya salad. This was by far the best green papaya salad I've ever had. I personally felt the pho was subpar and fell short of expectations - the broth wasn't very well seasoned and didn't have the sweetness or saltiness I usually look for. It tasted more like plain bone broth unless you season it yourself. The short rib however was amazing - very soft, tender, and fell apart easily. I came back recently for the first time in years to celebrate a friend's birthday, and it was decent, but nothing to write home about. The madame pho was a bit of a letdown. Tasting the broth alone, it's on the blander side and seems to lack the depth of flavor and a bit of salt. Adding lime and using the hoisin/sriracha definitely helped, but I wouldn't be craving pho from here anytime soon. Portions for the pho were good - our table seemed quite full from the pho. A highlight for me was their housemade soda, which comes in either lychee or passionfruit. I enjoyed both flavors! Service is really kind & attentive! This might be one of my favorite restaurants in NYC. I've been here at least three times bringing different people that come to visit because I know that they will fall in love with it too. It's definitely not your classic Vietnamese restaurant, it is more of an elevated Vietnamese vibe. For an appetizer, we got the BANH BOT CHIEN, which is pictured below with the sauce and chilis on it. The dish is rice cakes with eggs, scallions topped with fried garlic, diced sausage, cilantro, fresno chilis, and fish sauce is given on the side (which is good because my bf isn't a huge fan of fish sauce even though I'm obsessed with it). I didn't know what to expect when we ordered this, but wow my mind was blown. The rice cakes are crispy and carry all the toppings really well. I got the vermicelli bowl pictured below. The lemon grass beef is DELICIOUS - so tender, so flavorful - kinda feels like butter in your mouth. The portion is great. Other dishes I've had before: Tet noodles (Egg noodles stir fried with garlic butter fish sauce, topped with lump crab meat & prawns) - these are a must get if its your first time, the madame pho (Beef broth simmered for 24 hours with rice noodles, eye of round, brisket, meatball topped with cilantro, onions & scallions), and the banh Xeo (Vietnamese crepe with sautéed shrimp & pork belly.
