While in town visiting my parents, we made a reservation for dinner one night here at the pub. It's adjacent to the Grafton Inn if you're looking for it. Big barn converted to a pub. Wicked nice. Service was super friendly and helpful. I don't remember her name, but she has a maple leaf tattoo that my mom admired. The special "event" of the day was "burger & brew" and so I ordered that. Even though the rest of the menu looked wicked good, I stuck with what seemed special at the time. There's a separate menu that has a list of multiple burgers to choose from. I went with the gouda burger. Bacon, caramelized onions, burger, and gouda cheese. Yes, I could make a dad joke here about it being a wicked gouda burger, but I won't. It came with a side of chips too. Kettle. I could've chosen something else, but this is what I wanted. I washed it down with a tasty maple stout, because when visiting Vermont, you eat and drink anything with maple in it or you're not doing it right. Overall, we each had a very nice dinner and enjoyed the ambiance. I'd come back here again, as there appear to be special events each night with different themed specials.

Picture this: it's negative degrees on a cold winter's night in Vermont. Inside the Phelps Barn, it's warm and cozy. Waitstaff guides you to your table, which is right in front of the roaring fireplace and overlooking the beautiful restored barn. A perfect glimpse into rustic life. We were staying in an Vrbo in Grafton, and made sure to try out the famous Phelps Barn Pub, which is only steps away. It was a cozy and convenient place with decent food options. We got the mac and cheese to start, which could have used some salt. We dined on a Thursday, which also happened to be a special burger day, so we got a mushroom Swiss burger to try - we enjoyed it but nothing special. We also got a pork chop with mashed sweet potatoes and brussel sprouts, definitely our favorite dish of the night. If we ever stay in Grafton again, we will be back!

We stayed in Grafton, which is picture perfect in August, so we ate here our first night in town. We were a party of 4 adult women and the bill was slightly over $200 (including one beer and one glass of wine). All the food was very good. Two of us had the salmon, another the strip steak and another the vegetable pasta (the best). We had the cheese charcuterie board - cheese, grapes, strawberries, local sausage, olives and bread- as an appetizer and the only complaint was that it needed more cheese. The ice cream 2 of us had for dessert was delicious and full of fresh blueberries. We sat outside on the patio on a Wednesday night - there was live music. Our waitress was fantastic. We would go again!

We revisited the Barn this week. Things have improved since my posting a couple years ago. My main issue in the last posting was cleanliness. That seems to have been resolved. Sometimes you get an impression of the cleanliness of a restaurant by the condition of the bathroom. It was spotless. I mean, eat off the floor clean. Food wise: we had a basic pub burgers. Lots of fries, burger was cooked perfectly. Cocktails: The waiter was very patient with me in trying two different samples of beers and two different red wines. I chose a red wine. Soup: I had the best fish stew I have had in many years. I included a picture which does not do it justice. You may have to zoom in on it to see just how hearty it was. Lots of white fish and a cream broth that was to die for. My compliments to Chef Dave (I think that is right). I thoroughly enjoyed it.

We easily made a reservation online for the barn and had a good time here. There was live music on a Saturday evening. The duck I ordered was delicious. We also ordered steak, fish and chips, and a burger. Service was great.

I have been hear many times and always have a great meal and drinks. I was surprised I have never rated the Phelps barn. I have eaten here for more than one anniversary. Often there is music. The barn is connected the Grafton inn a beautiful inn with formal dinning and lodging. The barn is a lad back version. Great food service atmosphere and drinks. Try it.

The reviews were good, the menu was interesting and the prices reasonable, plus they were open on week nights. Making a reservation was easy online. Getting there proved a little more challenging than it should have been since Google Maps routed us on State Route 121 which has some unpaved sections; luckily going back was easier using Route 35 to Route 11. Arriving in Grafton we were impressed to find a classic New England Inn glowing white on a cold winter night. The entrance is on the side of the building, you enter through the B&B lobby, which is comfortable and impressive with a sign showing the many prominent guests who have stayed over the years. The restaurant is classy, burgundy-colored walls with white trim and classic fixtures; a wonderful upscale dining room without being stuffy. They even had live music with a guitarist playing soft rock. Our server was very nice, professional and attentive. The menu combines classics and some interesting touches, I ordered the Bouillabaisse and my friend ordered the Caesar Salad and Chicken Wings. Our food came out quickly. The Caesar salad was huge, the wings were tasty and a generous portion. My Bouillabaisse was excellent a nice tomato and fennel broth loaded expertly prepared scallops, shrimp, mussels and a large fish fillet. The highlight were the large sweet perfectly seared scallops, but all of the seafood were delicious. For me this was a Pescetarian dream dish. We were persuaded to order dessert my friend got the Apple Pie and I got the Skillet Chocolate Chip Cookie topped with vanilla ice cream. Both desserts were sweet and satisfying, a great way to end a wonderful meal. I would strongly recommend having dinner at the Grafton Inn, the food, service and atmosphere are great, prices are reasonable for what you get. This was a perfect way to top off our ski trip with a superior culinary experience.

Hubby reported his roast beef sandwich was great although the roast beef looked overcooked to me. What was dubious, however, were the French fries. The inside is charming and has that old wooden bar smell that I like. This would be a great place to grab a drink on a cold winter day. Very Scottish, lol. We were seated immediately for our 6:30 dinner reservation. We each ordered appetizers, which took nearly 45 minutes to arrive, even the cup of soup. Mozzarella sticks were nothing special, the cheddar tomato soup was really tasty. My mother in law loved the cock-a-leekie soup, and my father in law liked his scotch egg. It took another 20-25 minutes for our entrees to arrive. For a restaurant that closes at 8 pm, it was surprising at how long the food took to come out. They must have a very small kitchen. Everyone in our group liked their meal. My "loaded vegetarian baked potato" was just a full cup of sour cream and cheese on top of a potato with lukewarm broccoli on the side. A bit disappointing, with there were at least chives or seasoning. Basically nothing else vegetarian on the menu so this was what I was stuck with. Desserts were good, especially the sticky toffee pudding. I would call this place a step above average in the area, but service leaves a lot to be desired.

We followed it to the 18th century farmhouse in Londonderry, VT. When we got there, it was not open so I took out my phone and made a reservation on the spot for dinner in two days. Since this was the week before our anniversary, we decided to treat ourselves to this experience. The menu left us guessing at first. There was no delineation of appetizers and entrees. When it was explained to us that items at the top of the menu were considered appetizers because of the portion size, it was a little clearer. But we were still left guessing what was the portion size of these items. We thought we would start with the sourdough rye. It came piping warm with smoked butter. The smoked butter had a bolder taste than your typical sweet cream butter. He wanted the House Made Orecchiette which was a duck sausage but our server said it had a bit of spice but would be manageable. Thankfully, she asked the chef and reported back that it really was spicy so he changed his order to match mine which was the Seared Labelle Farm Duck Breast. Labelle Farm is where they sourced the duck. I love that they know where their food comes from! We both enjoyed the duck immensely. It came with Solo's very own farm fresh vegetables. For dessert, we ordered the cheesecake with blueberry compote. Someone brought it with a candle and said, "happy birthday or anniversary." Nice that they put a candle on the cheesecake but I did say it was our anniversary on the reservation. I guess that kinda ruined it for me that she didn't bother to look what special event we were celebrating. The meal was lovely. The farmhouse setting was quaint. You hear all the footsteps of the hardwood floors whenever someone walked. My only critique was that it was VERY warm inside. There was one window that was slightly cracked open but no breeze was felt. It was so warm that we had to ask for ice in our water. I think our meal would have been more enjoyable if we weren't sweating our way through dinner. I guess 18th century farmhouses didn't have air conditioning.
