We drove up to VT to stay with friends and decided to have dinner at this place. The barn is two floors of dining and bar area. It definitely has a rustic decor which lends to the experience. We went on a Thursday which is the burger and brew special which I took advantage of. My girlfriend had the charcuterie. She always loves a good charcuterie. I ordered the white bean, chorizo chili burger. The best part was that it came with the beer. Unfortunately, I was not pleased with the chili burger. I was expecting a real good chili taste and it was actually quite flat. The onion rings were good. We did enjoy dessert which was crème brûlée, the pieces of almond gave it a very nice texture. While in town visiting my parents, we made a reservation for dinner one night here at the pub. It's adjacent to the Grafton Inn if you're looking for it. Big barn converted to a pub. Wicked nice. Service was super friendly and helpful. I don't remember her name, but she has a maple leaf tattoo that my mom admired. The special "event" of the day was "burger & brew" and so I ordered that. Even though the rest of the menu looked wicked good, I stuck with what seemed special at the time. There's a separate menu that has a list of multiple burgers to choose from. I went with the gouda burger. Bacon, caramelized onions, burger, and gouda cheese. Yes, I could make a dad joke here about it being a wicked gouda burger, but I won't. It came with a side of chips too. Kettle. I could've chosen something else, but this is what I wanted. I washed it down with a tasty maple stout, because when visiting Vermont, you eat and drink anything with maple in it or you're not doing it right. Cocktails and service were great! Issues with food. Ordered a short rib with cheddar risotto entree Entree arrives with 1 tbsp of cheddar risotto (my guess was the kitchen was running low) This was a pricey entree; this should have been disclosed when I placed my order. When i asked waitress "where's the risotto?" -she said it's under the short rib. It was not. She says I'll bring you some more. They must've been out of it-what she brought was artichoke hearts, soinach, sun dried tomatoes, is some sort of creamy mixture which was NOT cheddar risotto. I think restaurants must think people are stupid. Im an advanced home cook , my sister is a chef by profession. If you are unable to execute a dish-take it off the menu. Such a shame because the meat was quite delicious. I don't appreciate being bamboozled. read more

Waitstaff guides you to your table, which is right in front of the roaring fireplace and overlooking the beautiful restored barn. A perfect glimpse into rustic life. We were staying in an Vrbo in Grafton, and made sure to try out the famous Phelps Barn Pub, which is only steps away. It was a cozy and convenient place with decent food options. We got the mac and cheese to start, which could have used some salt. We dined on a Thursday, which also happened to be a special burger day, so we got a mushroom Swiss burger to try - we enjoyed it but nothing special. We also got a pork chop with mashed sweet potatoes and brussel sprouts, definitely our favorite dish of the night. If we ever stay in Grafton again, we will be back! read more

We stayed in Grafton, which is picture perfect in August, so we ate here our first night in town. We were a party of 4 adult women and the bill was slightly over $200 (including one beer and one glass of wine). All the food was very good. Two of us had the salmon, another the strip steak and another the vegetable pasta (the best). We had the cheese charcuterie board - cheese, grapes, strawberries, local sausage,olives and bread- as an appetizer and the only complaint was that it needed more cheese. The ice cream 2 of us had for dessert was delicious and full of fresh blueberries. We sat outside on the patio on a Wednesday night - there was live music. Our waitress was fantastic. We revisited the Barn this week. Things have improved since my posting a couple years ago. My main issue in the last posting was cleanliness. That seems to have been resolved. Sometimes you get an impression of the cleanliness of a restaurant by the condition of the bathroom. It was spotless. I mean, eat off the floor clean. Food wise: we had a basic pub burgers. Lots of fries, burger was cooked perfectly. Cocktails: The waiter was very patient with me in trying two different samples of beers and two different red wines. I chose a red wine. Soup: I had the best fish stew I have had in many years. I included a picture which does not do it justice. You may have to zoom in on it to see just how hearty it was. Lots of white fish and a cream broth that was to die for. My compliments to Chef Dave (I think that is right). I thoroughly enjoyed it. read more

I visited Grafton for an extended weekend stay during the Labor Day holiday, and I was a little worried about what to expect when it came to food since it's such a small town. I knew there weren't a ton of options in town, but I was hoping I wouldn't have to drive 20 minutes away for dinner. Thankfully, Phelps Barn Pub did more than suffice! This spot (connected to The Grafton Inn) was a great place to eat dinner and surpassed what I would have expected. It's literally a restaurant in a remodeled barn that hits all the right notes: great ambiance, attentive service, delicious food, and tasty cocktails & drinks. Whether you're in town for a weekend getaway, a wedding, or vacationing with family Phelps Barn will hit the spot. Don't be fooled by the word "pub" in the name. Their menu might seem like standard bar fare, but the quality and taste of the food is incredible. On night one, I had the Tenderloin Burger cooked medium rare which was super tasty. And then on night two, I got the steak frites with shiitake mushrooms which was a hefty portion. I also found their Stonecutter Manhattan to be a brilliant cocktail for just $10, so I got it twice. I didn't call and make a reservation because I figured this place is in the middle of nowhere of Vermont. How could it be packed? Well, I was wrong. Every table was reserved. We ended up sitting at the bar which is anyways what I prefer. They had live music playing all night! We ordered the soup of the day, which was something creamy but whatever it was, it was good!!!! Everyone seem to enjoy their entrées, and the bartender was really sweet. We also met some people from New York and Tennessee while sitting at the bar. This restaurant is connected to a hotel so you'll definitely see a lot of out of stators here. If you plan on going to this barn pub definitely make a reservation. read more

The hours at Phelp's Barn kind of suck, but the place, itself, its kind of amazing. So warm and cozy and intimate while still being casual and upbeat. I tried the Caesar salad the the "meat" burger. (meat, in this case, equals pork, beef, and elk but on the menu it says "other meats" instead of elk). Both of these things were PHENOMINAL. And the BBQ with the burger... OMG. So good. This also seems to be the place the locals come to hang out when they're open and that adds an additional liveliness. They share a kitchen with the Old Tavern but they only share a couple of dishes. Mostly, they are their own separate place with a very diffent feel. SInce they are affiliated with the inn, though, you can chrage your burger and grat to you room and deal with it later. Awesome. Went here with friends as we like the band that was playing. My friend and I both ordered the Buttermilk Fried Chicken, Apple Slaw, VT Chevre, Cranberry Aioli on a Kaiser Roll. It took about an hour to get our meal; not sure what the hold up was on that. The sandwich is good; however it could have used more slaw or sauce on it. I got mine with the kettle chips and those were good. I also had to drink the Banana Slide which is Caramel Vodka,Banana Liqueur, Baileys finished with Chocolate Syrup. I had 2 of those, they were wicked good. I have to say the service was slow. That is unless your a friend or ex-employeee; they seemed to get their order the same time we got our food. That was in 5 minutes for them! Not very keen on that! But I would go back, especially if the band plays again!! read more

Thursday's evenings are the best to go for the "Burger and Brew" specials. The food is good and the atmosphere is friendly and if you go regularly you will get to know the locals, who usually always try to go Thursdays. Sit upstairs for a more casual and friendly experience especially if you sit at the bar and are served by the bartender, she is awesome! When ordering food, especially steaks or burgers, make sure you ask their terms. The kitchen usually gets things way WAY off. If you order medium, one night it might be rare and another night it might be medium rare. So describe how you want your burger "slightly pink not raw".... and it's not the servers fault at all. Every week it seems it's a toss up how our burgers will be cooked. Avoid the ice cream, it tends to be grainy and have a runny mouth feel, as well as the flourless chocolate cake, it too was a bust. One desert they removed that was really excellent was the cast iron s'mores. If it comes back, be sure to try it. read more

The Husband chose this place as part of our day trip for our birthday's this ear and he made a great choice. Phelps barn is part of the Old Tavern, and is a barn converted into a restaurant. It has a loft with some tables and seating and also has a room with a television, board games and a computer (for the younger generation of course). They have live music/entertainment on occasion and on this particular night a fiddler was scheduled to play. We didn't know what to think of that exactly but in the end it was quite enjoyable. The place got quite busy about an hour before the fiddler was supposed to start so I was glad we got there early and were able to grab a table up in the loft. Some tables had 10 people around them. The staff was very nice about helping people find chairs and tables, even if they were little side tables from the room up stairs. Husband and I played a few board games while we drank and waited for a friend. The prices were good and the beer was local. The food was also well priced and very tasty. We had barbeque wings, Caesar salad, mac n cheese, Shepards pie, and carrot cake. Everything was delicious! I think my favorite though was the mac n cheese. (Husband and I shared meals because we couldn't decide between the two!) Overall, it was a great night and I would easily return there. On Friday nights they have brick oven pizza's and I'm sure they are amazing!!! The menu sounded delicious for them. read more

Been going here for years. We lived in the town for 17 years and We loved burger and brew night. The bartenders are smart and fun and it's a good chance to hob nob with the locals. The menu is a relatively inexpensive.The atmosphere is awesome and they usually have local live music. read more

This is real find in a great little town. Located next to historical Grafton Inn (see my review of this restaurant as well) & using the same kitchen, but much more casual, it is not only a great place to dine it's a fun place as well. They have a varied menu which is big on local produce, ie, local cheeses & beer in s pub setting. The burgers are among the best to be had. The atmosphere is great & service outstanding. Had a local beer, 1801, which was very tasty. For entertainment they had a group of mostly senior citizens (I can relate) who came in to play some outstanding Dixie land style jazz which had the place rocking. Warm and romantic. Had a wonderful time here on a fall weekday. I think we visited Grafton during a shoulder season, so we basically had the place to ourselves. We had a prime spot in front of a fireplace. Food was delicious and we got two desserts. Highly recommend the cheese platter and cheesecake. Overpriced, burger with bacon & fries($17)--size of a fast food burger, hardly any meat, forgot the bacon then brought out cold bacon! Turkey croissant melt($14) they forgot the cranberry chutney & the turkey was cold--salad (instead of fries)was no more than 5 mouthfuls, homemade honey mustard dressing was all honey & super runny. The best part of the meal was my daughters $8 grilled cheese--we should have all ordered off the kids menu!
