    Lunch Hunan Pork
    Christina F.

Area was bright and clean, server was friendly. Note on the front door advised patrons will pay surcharge if using a credit card. Prices on website and takeout menu need updated as prices have changed. Pork dishes start at 8.95 and go up a dollar for chicken and more for beef or shrimp. You are also charged an extra dollar for rice. My 8.95 lunch with rice cost 11.10 before added credit card charge or tip. Soup was good, meal was very average. Is definitely not the Old Wok I remember from Liberty.

Y'all the hype is real…read more This is the OG Vietnam Cafe in KC and it has been on my radar for years. Nestled in Columbus Park, it has a real neighborhood vibe, and it doesn't look like anything special from the outside. First of all I was wrong about that because this place is special. The first think you'll notice are the nicest, friendliest people on the planet are working here. They are knowledgeable and are so glad you're there to experience authentic Vietnamese cuisine. I ordered a bun dish that is amongst my favorites and it came out just as good, if not better, than the best ones I had when I lived in Seattle. My friend had a Vietnamese coffee that she adored in addition to her lunch, and it was all delightful. Despite them being busy we weren't rushed, and when we paid and left the people working the cashier were just so kind, I honestly can't overstate how nice everyone was. I'm already thinking about my next visit - I do think this is currently the best Vietnamese I've had in KC.

Even more embarrassing I brought 2 Vietnamese friends of mine to try it out. With mid food and poor customer service that day (no proper utensils, had to ask several times, and one person just not receiving their food for a ridiculous amount of time) the restaurant made a liar out of me. During lunch it's pretty peaceful and the food is much better. Dinner time draws a crowd, so plan accordingly.

The restaurant was very nice--tastefully decorated with authentic touches that felt intentional and refined. The large canvas artwork added character without overwhelming the space. It struck a perfect balance: elegant but comfortable. The staff was attentive, welcoming, and knowledgeable about the menu. They were patient and accommodating, especially with our little one, which always makes a difference when dining out with family. We started with the sampler platter, which included fresh spring rolls, crispy spring rolls, and a variety of other traditional bites. Everything was prepared well--the fresh rolls were vibrant and clean tasting, while the crispy rolls had a satisfying crunch without being greasy. For entrées, my wife ordered the Vietnamese pork chop with the perfectly runny egg over broken rice. The pork was well-seasoned and cooked just right, and that egg brought everything together beautifully. I ordered the Bánh Mì and a bowl of pho. The pho had the perfect level of spice--balanced, aromatic, and comforting. The broth had depth, and you could tell it was crafted with care. The Bánh Mì was equally impressive; the baguette was toasted just right--crispy on the outside, soft on the inside--holding all the flavors together without overpowering them. What truly stands out is that Broken Rice delivers this level of quality without being overly expensive. It's a great value for authentic, well-executed Vietnamese cuisine. And most importantly--our niece enjoyed herself too, which says a lot. I would absolutely recommend Broken Rice to anyone looking for a satisfying, authentic dining experience in a warm and welcoming atmosphere

They've done an excellent job keeping the old aesthetic while making it still look fresh and new. The restaurant was so cool but oddly not one other patron in the space. I guess what I'm trying to say is it's an excellent space but possibly more of a to go spot despite the beautiful restaurant space. The menu is fairly trim but has flavors of east Asia and south eastern Asia. So pho, Chinese and I believe they had some Thai. The food was very good, our egg roll was perfectly crispy and my entree Mongolian beef was delicious. Lots and lots of veggies which is a great surprise for Chinese dishes. I'll definitely be back to try the beef and broccoli soon!

We did enjoy the shrimp, spring rolls, but were slightly disappointed that the peanut sauce was very watery. The menu had a good variety, but most of the dishes involved pork, very few involved chicken. Tofu dishes were also an option. The chicken pad Thai was very tasty; rather than cooking the dish to a persons heat specification, they just provide extra chili powder on the plate if you wanted to make it spicier. The main reason for the low review would be the cleanliness of the restaurant. On the table were a variety of spices and sauces in various containers, but they didn't look like they had been cleaned or changed in several uses, so we did not use or investigate to know exactly what things were.

Side note - Me and my family have eaten here over two handful of times and I've never had any issues with seeing any bugs rodents or odor... So it surprises me that these other people leaving these reviews have had these types of encounters... Because I would never eat an establishment like that. I trust pho Vietnam and that's why I eat here.
