We came here on a Friday night. Parking can be difficult in their lot but it was okay on this night. The restaurant is kind of tucked away in a corner. It would be easy to miss it if you were not looking for it. We ordered at the counter but they also have two kiosks where you can process your order. The employee that took our order was polite and helpful. We grabbed a table while we waited on our order. The dining area had a small number of tables. There were also some outdoor tables. Everything looked very clean. Our order came after a short wait. We had two plate lunches. One was chicken katsu and the other was BBQ chicken. Both plates came with rice, macaroni salad, cabbage and broccoli (a piece or two). The flavor of everything was great. The portions of meat were very generous. The katsu sauce and BBQ sauce that came on the side were great tasting. We took half of our dinners home to have for lunch the next day. Here's what you get: You get 4 pieces of fried fish or spicy grilled fish. 3 scoops of rice Side Salad All for $8? We're talking pre covid prices. In addition I got greeted with a nice Aloha when I came in. Cool little courtyard to eat or they have spot inside. Also had a nice Hawaiian vibe when we went inside! Came by because I got a coupon in the mail for a buy one plate, get one free deal. The parking situation is a little awkward because it's in a corner of the plaza, but there are plenty of spots around. They have one person at the register and then 2 self serve kiosks to order at in case you don't want to wait in line. The staff was nice. We got the chicken mix plate and Hawaiian BBQ mix plate. The portion size seemed fine, but it felt like there was a decent amount of cabbage underneath the meat. Also, they include some broccoli with the cabbage which seems very out of place. It would make more sense if it was a teriyaki bowl place, but seems very random for Hawaiian plate lunch. The Mac salad was good, you can also substitute scoops of Mac salad for rice. The portion size on the one scoop seemed really small. The rice itself came out a little watery. The chicken katsu was somewhat plain and very sauce dependent. Some pieces were almost all breading with very little meat inside. Probably the least enjoyable protein in the meal. The bbq chicken was solid and had good flavor. I think this would be the best bang for your buck item to order. The bbq beef tasted good, but the pieces were inconsistent in thickness. The kalbi short Rib was good, but you do pay a premium for it because it's $3-5 more than getting a regular entree. read more

I've been to Ono Hawaiian locations in the IE and was happy to see a location opened in Lake Forest. Pros: easy online ordering, clean interior, friendly staff, and my food was piping hot. The bbq chicken was very flavorful and tender, and the macaroni salad is food. Cons: the white fish at Ono is a weird texture imo, and I am always turned off by it. But this is also true at other locations, and in the past I'd simply stopped ordering the white fish because it's consistently mushy on the inside. There's nothing like a good Hawaiian bbq plate with steamed rice, Mac salad and deliciously charred bbq. This location seems to have opened fairly recently on El Toro. I've been to other locations of Ono Hawaiian as the have other locations as well. I tried the BBQ plate which comes with Ribs, BBQ chicken and BBQ Beef along with the usual sides. Food comes out in decent time here even if it's packed and the great thing is they have a self service katsu and teriyaki sauce which saves from going up to the counter every few minutes and asking for more. I've always felt like the Ono Hawaiian BBQ has good food and consistent with their other locations at the industry average when it comes to quality, freshness and flavor. read more

I went to the grand opening and it was a great experience. They had balloons, great signage and a lot very friendly workers. It's a brand new spot so the place spotless and light and bright. One thing I noticed immediately was that their prices were a little lower than the other Hawaiian style plate lunch spots like L&L or Aloha BBQ. That was a pleasant surprise. There were no long lines and the food came out fairly quickly. I ordered a chicken and beef teriyaki plate as well as a chicken katsu and Kalua pork plate. I took them home to eat and was not disappointed. We gave Ono one more chance and it was really bad.... again. When you order katsu chicken you should be given katsu sauce. Nothing's worse than getting home and finding the chicken dry as can be with no sauce to help it. We ordered two aloha plates and the portions were awful. My plate had all super thin dry pieces of katsu, as if I only had end pieces. My friend had all thick center pieces. My second protein was fire chicken, I had maybe 8 small strips. It tasted good, but I'm there needed ti be more. Let's not forget the salad, there was salad dressing on it, neither one of us could tell. Just OK and not anything to rave about. Had a craving for Hawaiian and saw this new place and had to give it a try. Ordered a short rib plate and a white fish with shrimp plate. Nothing special about the flavor of the food. Everything was edible but nothing really stood out. Ribs cooked well but the sauce/marinade was flat. Macaroni could have used a bit more vinegar and carrots and less onion. Rice was a little on the dry side. The fish and shrimp were just a little over done. This being a fairly new restaurant to the area we thought we'd give it a try anticipating their promotions. It appears they're trying to draw people in with these promotions but if they want to keep the customer they have to show them what they got! The chicken katsu was like eating jerky. 1st time at this location and it was a disappointment. Ordered takeout and arrived at the scheduled time. Had the Chicken Katsui plate. The Chicken was not fresh at all. It had to be a day old given its dryness, and the toughness of the coating. It also tasted of old grease. I have been going to Ono for a few years and unfortunately this location was the worst. Doubtful if I will be returning again. Given that it was early in the day and not much past its opening time, it must have been leftover from the previous day.
