Unacceptable! I went yesterday with my grandson for a treat, and the 3 cashiers did not even acknowledge us! I was standing there for 15 minutes, waiting for them to finish chatting and taking phone orders. I understand phone orders are important, but how about people who walk in and want to sit at the table? I actually wanted to speak with the owner, that's how furious I was, not to mention my grandson started to cry when we left, because he wanted a cupcake. And the cupcakes are old, by the way. I bought several times and they are not so fresh. I guess those phone orders are NOT for cupcakes. I would give a zero star, if possible, and I would not recommend walking in. We came back to back for three days after moving to the neighborhood. Really good, reliable neighborhood spot. We've had their breakfast sandwiches that you can build yourself (you choose the type of bread and protein you prefer), FU Burrito, Chicken Sandwich and BMT Sandwich. Everything was quite good! The BMT Sandwich with the pesto has probably been my favorite so far. We've also had their mocha, green juice and chocolate croissant. The mocha had a deep coffee flavor and was definitely coffee with chocolate rather than chocolate with coffee. Their green juice is quite good and for $6.50, it doesn't break the bank. The chocolate croissant didn't taste fresh and honestly tasted like it came out of a plastic wrapper from a supermarket but I don't know if that's actually true, I just personally wouldn't get it again. Let me start of by saying this place is amazing!! It's not a full service restaurant, you walk up, order and pay but someone brings your food to you. They have a lot of delicious options but we went in the morning so I got their special pancake breakfast platter. It included 2 pancakes, bacon, sausage, and 2 eggs. Normally I don't like sausage, but I don't know how they make their sausage it was delicious, I wanted 50 more. Their pancakes were also amazing, fluffy, airy, not dry at all, and the actual flavour was good (good use of vanilla). Their eggs and bacon were also perfect. Overall, I loved the decor and how casual the place is. My partner also really loved his meal (avocado toast). Highly recommend this for breakfast. I would love to try their other food! read more

This is probably my favorite breakfast/lunch spot in The Heights. The food is affordable and good quality and the entire vibe in the cafe is peaceful and cozy. The service is always great, they have you order at the counter and then bring the food over to where you're sitting. Everyone is always so kind & the owner even greeted and checked in on us while we were eating. Also the music playlist here is so good! It's like they have my entire Spotify wrapped on shuffle lol. They have reopened, yay! This cafe is adorable, clean, and they have some great deals for very good food. They also have plenty of indoor seating, but no outdoor as of yet. When I came by, I grabbed their all day $7 breakfast platter with pancakes, sausage, and eggs, and I wasn't disappointed. I also tried their fruit strawberry kiwi smoothie, which was fresh and not too sweet. Although, next time I'll ask for a little less sugar. With their big case of pastries staring at me during my wait, I caved in and got the chocolate Hershey's cake. I was also very good, although it would have been nice if they let me know that it contained rum. No biggie, but rum has a very distinct flavor. Overall, it's a great cafe. I was craving some good brunch food and came across Unica Cafe on Google. They have a decent menu, with some cool options. I ordered online for a quicker pick up process (wow...try saying "quicker pick up process" 5 times fast lol). I arrive to the cafe, which was super cute. It was super spacious, with really cute decor and furniture. I walked up to the counter where I saw 2 staff members. I waited to 2 minutes before anyone acknowledged me. Another member came from the back and asked what I ordered (there was no, "hi" or "hello", by the way). I'm pretty old-fashioned, and experienced with restaurant work, and I just think it's important to greet your guests when they walk in. If you're occupied, then just say, "hello, I'll be right with you". I stood at the counter and felt stupid lol. I was handed my order and headed out. Now, the food. I ordered a couple things. The first thing being a pancake platter, which is served with eggs (you choose the style), 2 pancakes, bacon, and sausage. It's a nice sized platter for the price. The platter, as you'll see in my photos looked fabulous. Now, I'm a bit of a pancake snob, as I make my own homemade pancakes quite often. Don't get me wrong though, I have friends who make me the boxed stuff, and it be good, ok?! While Unica's pancakes looked gorgeous, they had this chewy, rubbery-esque texture to them. I ordered my eggs scrambled with cheese. They didn't have any flavor at all. I can tell there was no salt added. It made them very bland. I just added a little hot sauce lol. The bacon was fine, but very flimsy (as you'll see in my photos). It wasn't crispy at all. The sausage was a link, and it was tasty! The second thing I ordered, was the breakfast burrito, and this burrito is what took my 3 star review, to a 4 star review, because it was EXCEPTIONAL! It was beautifully done. It just has this finesse about it that the other food was lacking. This burrito was made with scrambled eggs, cheese, rice and sausage. It's served with a side salad, and a beautifully done green sauce. I savored that burrito, you hear me?! I mean, even the way it was wrapped was just lovely. That breakfast burrito gets 5 stars from me, and would be the reason I come back! Overall, there are just a few small changes that can be made based on my experience, that can make a big impact here. I appreciate this cute cafe and would love to return. It's important to acknowledge paying customers. The woman who asked what I was picking up, I think she thought I was doing Uber Eats or Grubhub, which still doesn't make the lack of greeting me any better. When I visit coffee shops for the first time, I start simple and then build up. Four stars for now and definitely potential here for 5. Dropped by for coffee. Went iced coffee, with milk and sugar. Easily the best iced coffee I've had. Smooth blend. Perfectly made; had just enough ice and milk. They've got a great drink menu and food menu, not to mention a great case of bakery items. Spacious cafe which makes it an ideal place to get work done. I'm always on the lookout for cafes where I can spend a few hours brainstorming or writing. I've been to many cafes with an average menu and a strong smell of food/grease which gets onto my clothes. This was something I was concerned with when I was at the cafe because I smelled food but I was pleasantly surprised that I didn't smell like food after I left the place. Good food at reasonable price. I had the eastern omelette and the chocolate pretzel. I liked the omelette but the chocolate pretzel was too sweet for me. The chocolate was already sweet so the added sugar crystal made it even more sweet. I would've liked it if there was just chocolate with nuts. I'm trying to eat less meat so the omelette was perfect! I ordered the eastern omelet (without corn and cones with potatoes) $11.24 (bacon and sausages added), slice of chocolate cake $4.50, and 2 large cappuccinos with almond milk $9.50. They omelet was excellent! It was scrambled with tomato, mozzarella, spinach. The flavors were excellent! Buttery goodness. I asked for no corn and they didn't put corn in it! The home fries I asked for well done and crunchy. They weren't but they were still good. Soft cooked potatoes. The sausage had a crunchy outer skin and cooked through. Sooo yummy! The bacon was salty and crunchy; perfect! Came with ketchup. The cappuccino's were hot and delicious! Foam had some cinnamon sprinkled on it. I'd totally order everything again! The chocolate cake was good too but not what I was expecting. It had a truffle flavor. It was unexpected and a little unusual. Not sure if it was intentional. Cake is soft and moist. The vegetable wrap was good I do wish it had more portabello mushroom. It seemed like baby mushrooms cut up into pieces mixed with roasted peppers and the garlic aioli made this come together inside of a sun dried tomato wrap. I was not a fan of the croqueta or the taro tea, the tea tasted more like milk than taro tea. Young lady in the front cashier did not seem familiar with the menu. I had mentioned the wrap twice and she didn't know what I was asking for than I had to point it out where on her menu diaplay behind her was the item I ordered. Such a cute spot! Lovely interior, great coffee, tasty baked goods and lots of variety. I am quite particular with coffee and most places i try im quite disappointed in but the coffee here was perfect. Good quality blends, syrups and milks. Also wanted to add that i didnt expect this level of quality at such a cheap price. If i lived/ worked in the area i would come here all of the time. Cozy spot to hang out with a coffee, get some food and sit with a friend or laptop. You can tell that the owners/ managers put love and care into their restaurant. The chocolate danish pretzel (i forget what it was actually called) was delicious and ive never seen that before so it was exciting. Única Café is unmatched. They are definitely a local business that caters both to the community and your taste buds. They have a selection of all type of lunches and breakfast options, with being very affordable. They also have different pastries, including cakes, which is definitely popular. I got the pancake platter breakfast and it was great! The staff was super friendly and very helpful as well. Única café also has a community bulletin board for customers to place their information, businesses cards and any other information you can think of. I have had the pleasure of eating here a few times given that my real estate office is across the street. While I scratch my head as per the location given the competition directly next store, across the street, and a half block down, La Unica is holding their own. In the AM I stick with the basics, avocado toast or a bacon, egg, cheese sandwich, of which both are fantastic. Lunch time, I have had the chicken Cesar salad quite a few times and keep meaning to stop in and order a Cuban sandwich. My wife enjoys the bakery items and she is quite hard to please, so her opinion is also influencing my review. My only negative, the chairs are not comfortable. Today was my last attempt at giving this business my money. The food is not the best, its barely ok. You won't leave feeling like it was worth the price. My partner had ordered a chicken sandwich once, & it was terrible: thin unflavored meat, one leaf of lettuce that did not look fresh & dry bread with no mayo or butter. Terrible. I've been in the neighborhood for over 2 years & I've always noticed how imbalanced the professionalism & energy is amongst the staff. People come here expecting pleasant, quick customer service at the start of their day for coffee/breakfast and/or lunch. Shouldn't be much of a hassle when it comes to communicating about orders & customer's requests. One of my usual orders consists of an Iced Latte & they started charging for Vanilla (syrup flavored pumps) - which I don't mind! Some of the young ladies are very friendly. However, the manager "Rosea" or "Roseo" is very unpleasant, unproffessional & has come off very rude & miserable every single time in order for me to simply order a latte & some spinach empanadas. First, she was giving me a hard time about the price, originally they were charging me different prices here & there, thinking I wouldn't check my receipts (be mindful of that.) Then, she gives me a hard time with the proper # of pumps for my coffee (even though I'm paying.) Starbucks would NEVER. She will continue to verbally complain that she "can't keep pumping just to pump" & will even try to argue with me. So unprofessional. Because I usually get the pumps on the side in a seperate tiny espresso cup, I even kindly showed her how much less is in there compared to other days & that she hasn't been giving me the same/consistent amount (which alters the entire flavor of the coffee.) Such a petty thing that shouldn't have to become a back and forth between customer & staff. I've come to her several times about her customer service & attitude in the cafe (being a familiar face in the neighborhood.) She refuses to improve her attitude towards my friends, my family & I. This has been a reoccuring event, I stopped coming here for a year because of the service & bad energy - returned today to still see no change & it's so disappointing. I was told the owner's name is Eric & I hope he sees this & takes it into consideration. I am Mixed Latina & I absolutely want to support all Latina/Brown & Black Businesses - & this is a shame that I will not be returning because of such poor & unnecessary customer service. You need to do better. Hire New Management & Train for more quality customer service with your staff. Its easy to be NICE, respectful & to not make customers feel like they are inconveniencing you! Especially returning customers who continue to give their money! This is just one of the main issues. There are so many things to like about this cafe! I'm not even sure where to start, but here goes: 1) The cafe incorporates both Spanish and Asian influences, so they offer a pretty diverse menu of foods and drinks. They have pastries, breads, sandwiches, quick bites, coffee/espresso/tea, juices, etc. (Rumor has it bubble tea will be making its premiere in the summer.) Some personal favorites are the sponge cake, guava pastries, Cuban sandwich, cortadito, and juices. Definitely quality products at a good price. 2) It's quite spacious with a lot of seating and lighting (both overhead and natural). The long wooden bench is surprisingly comfortable. And the music is usually pretty good -- like familiar pop hits at a soft volume. And they have WiFi, too. I also like that they're open later than most cafes (usually till 8pm) because my caffeine and baked goods needs do not end at 5pm lol 3) The staff are very friendly! The owners always make sure to say hi and greet the customers. The women behind the counter are very nice and attentive. 4) The location is pretty good because it's close to public transportation (bus and light rail). And since it's on Central Ave., it's usually an easy stop for when I'm running errands or commuting through the area. read more

I know what you are thinking.. great, another bakery on Central Ave but do yourself a favor and come by. La Unica is different than most bakeries that are on Central Ave. The decor and space is beautiful and there is plenty of seating and open space too. They have complimentary wifi which makes it a great space to come work. The staff here is so pleasant and great. They are truly welcoming and if you're here long enough you might even get a free sample of something sweet. They offer a great amount of sweets and what I like about it is that they are not overly sweet. They also offer sandwiches, salads, fresh juices, shakes, and smoothies. Their prices are also really reasonable.I really like their coconut pie and always order one. Ive tired a decent amount of their sweets and empanadas all so good. The owners are personable and really want to offer good food to the community. This is definitely one of my favorite spots to come in and get some work done and just get out of the apartment. read more

La Unica Bakery is a fantastic addition to the Heights neighborhood. The owners really care about making this bakery a space for people to feel welcomed, and it shows. From its spacious interior, free WiFi, delicious treats, and awesome coffee, there's no reason not to hang out here for a few. Bring a book, bring your laptop, bring your Switch. Their cafe con leche is awesome but my favorite is their ginger tea. The Cuban sandwich, empanadas, and coconut custard are all delicious. They also have a section with different flavored breads. The best one I tried was the one with custard but they're all pretty good. I can't say enough about the staff. They're all very friendly and attentive. La Unica is a nice addition to Central Avenue in The Heights, but they have a little bit of work to do. First, the atmosphere is open, airy, bright, and warm. They offer free WiFi, so it's a great spot to catch up on your email over a coffee and bite to eat. The staff is attentive and welcoming, so A+ there. Onto the food: The Cuban Pressed Sandwich- good size, excellent taste. The Ham & Cheese Pressed Sandwich- tasty, good amount of meat and Cheese. The Coffee- Fresh, tasty. For a bakery, I expected to see a wide variety of baked goods, but they were really lacking in this department. When I went in (a few weeks after opening) they didn't have much and what they did have didn't seem all that fresh. I ate some of the free samples and they didn't convince me to buy more. The mango cake was way too sweet and I saw a tiny sliver of mango; it barely had any mango flavor and reminded me of a little Debbie type item except it looked fancier. It tasted like a plain extra sugary cake. I exchanged it. Customer service wasn't great. Even my son stated his sponge cake tasted weird. I was told to pay more. The second cake -the Hershey's was barely edible. It was old. You could not slice into it with a spoon because the top part was like elastic old. Even my son Who eats anything took 3 bites. I gave them back the cake plate politely ( half eaten by son) and they didn't ask why. I'm definitely not coming here for any food. The coffee was good to fine so 2 stars for that and nice interior. But at the end of the day, that's not enough food and customer service is what would keep me coming back. It's too bad, the place looks nice and I wanted to try their sandwiches but I don't like being ripped off. If you are going to sell old cake and cake that sweet then at least apologize and don't explain to the customer that there's mango in it. I'm telling you gently. I absolutely love this place! During COVID I had only gotten it through uber eats, and delivery was always perfect. Drinks taped down, sandwiches packed well. Recently I started going to the actual location and it's been equally good if not better. Parking is pretty easy, no parking lot but I've never had trouble finding parking. The smoothies are huge! The cuban sandwiches are perfect and toasted and delicious EVERY time. For breakfast I've ordered the ham and cheese croissant, and it's always a perfect light breakfast. This place is just so consistent! I always get the iced coffee latte, and as someone who's grown up in Miami, on cafe con leche daily, it's like the perfect iced version of a cafe con leche (If you're used to your cuban coffee sweet, i'd ask for extra sugar like I do). As a displaced Cuban Miami native, this place definitely hits that cuban food craving itch for me! The prices are really good, and the indoor area is cute! I've only tried their $4 bubble tea but it was great. The bubbles were slightly sweet and soft. I got taro 50% sweetness with no ice (they don't have a specific "hot" option but they served it hot this way). The staff is friendly and the atmosphere of the place is inviting. I've been here 3 times. I really enjoyed my first two days here. They were early on in the week so maybe the bakery items were fresh. Cake slices were really good. Coffee is delicious. Waffle plate and Cesar salad were very good. The only thing I question by the end of the week is the freshness of items. I had come in consistently and had seen salads don't have dates listed but were the same since day 1. Today, I also got a rock hard cupcake. It was old. We also found lots of eggshells on our avocado toast with fried eggs. We purchased a whole cake. Would not recommend. The sponge cake was incredibly dry.
