Tim and I finally gave this place a try. We ordered Philly Steak & Chicken Philly Sub with the works. The Philly Cheese Steak had lots of onions. Don't recall if there were any other veggies on it. This place is right behind the El Cajon court house. In a small strip mall and has a decent amount on parking but a little tight. As you walk in their is a large deli counter , giant menu and large dining area. I got their large Philly w/ works( $7.75). The sandwich includes grilled onion, mayo, lettuce, tomato,bell peppers, mushroom and avocado. That's an S load of stuff on one sandwich, but it's a lot cheaper then if you order it all separate. I went here on a Monday at just before 12 and it wasn't too crowded. It only took about 10 mins for me to get my sandwich. It's a large sandwich stuffed to the gills with meat and all those toppings. Only toppings I could see was onions and peppers, the rest tasted like it was in there but unseen by me. Good tasty sandwich and very filling. Give it a try if you want a large filling sandwich that is a Cali interpretation of a Philly cheese steak. read more

This place has a lot of character. Not air conditioned but they did have a bathroom (which I really needed after eating my juicy sandwich). I came at 2:30 on a Wednesday randomly, ravenous. Ordered fries and a cheesesteak with the works and numerous modifications, and paid. From the time I paid, it was a full 20 minutes before my food was ready. Fortunately, it was totally worth the wait! The cheesesteak was juicy and flavorful and the cheese was stringy and really delicious. They got my order just right, too. The avocado was a nice but subtle touch. The sub was served almost open faced, it had so much meat. Good bread too. One of the best I've had in a while! The steak fries were cooked well: crispy on the outside and nice and mealy tender on the inside. Both the steak and fries were great portions for a very decent price. Great flavor and quality. Well, honestly. I think the owner is very nice. The boys behind the grill are playful, yet it just did not hit the mark. The meat to bread ratio was good. The taste? Well, it was good. I still feel that the meat needs a bit more flavor. Look, I am not saying it is bad... I am just saying I - IN MY OPINION - have had better in San Diego. Well, I have had better in Philly also... A really good Philly Cheese steak is hard to find for some reason in San Diego. Rarely can one be spotted. Luckily I was able to spot and consume this elusive creature right here in my own back yard of El Cajon... Much to my surprise. A large original is enough to feed two people and the price isn't bad at all! The ingredients are mixed together so well and the grilled onions are cooked to perfection. The fries they serve are steak fries! Hell yeah. We got a large sand which and an order of fries and three waters for under $10! The inside of this place is a little warm on those hot days but the walls are covered with a bunch of cool art and music inspired hangings. Really liked the vibe in there. I'm Cali born and raised but lived a few years in Michigan so I'm used to big east coast cheese steaks and corned beef/pastrami sandwiches. This is a great Cali take on a cheesesteak with the standard onions, peppers, mushrooms but with the avocado it's a SLAMich. The pastrami is so delicious. The sandwiches are sliced and cooked fresh deli style and so worth the extra buck or two over the usual $5 foot longs. Do yourself a favor and try this place. I'm from philly and I'll say philly steak subs has great cheesesteaks! There is something slightly different about them from real Philly cheesesteaks that I can't figure out (will think about and get back to you) but they're definitely delicious!!! Love their steak fries too and also can't beat grabbing some tasteykakes while I'm there! You can take out or eat in- the place is set up like a deli counter (which this Philly girl also loves) and they're tables set up to dine in. We've dined in the past few times and love it- there's all this east coast type art on the walls and NFL football team stickers tacked everywhere. Only complaint is that there are also Dallas cowboys stickers posted around which almost made me lose my lunch! Let me start off by stating the food looked good, however, please be aware that this business is not practicing any of the recommended procedures during this pandemic. I placed an order over the phone, I arrived and waited about 15 more minutes for my order which is fine but here is what I saw while I waited. The cooks were not wearing any masks. The cashier had his mask on his neck but did not cover his nose or mouth when I paid. I waited outside since its. very small place and they aloud a lot of people with no mask to enter the premises. I'm pretty sure these were regulars as they were laughing and having a great time hanging out inside. I was pretty disturbed by all the no maskers so I was happy to be outside to say the least but as I walked in to grab my order, I overheard them laughing at me for wearing a mask. Awesome. My dads friend Brian started the sub shop called it BJ's Munchie's with the courthouse newly built business was good. I've been curious about this place ever since my nursing instructor raved about it months ago. I finally got to eat here, and I have to say that their spin on the philly cheese steak is preferable to most others. I know it's not really like the ones in Philly at Pat or Geno's, but then I've never really liked cheesesteaks that drip everything and are just onions, cheese, and steak. Here, they add some veggies and the mozza actually stays in the sandwich. Some of it did spill out but it wasn't a completely uncleanable mess. The mayo actually adds flavor and keeps the meat from drying out. I have an issue with how expensive the sandwich is, though the size of the sandwich does sort of make up for it. I think they'd make a killing if it was around $5. Another problem is the location. While it's right off of downtown El Cajon and it's easily found by its proximity to the El Cajon courthouse, it's tucked into this small corner that isn't easily seen whenever you're going north on Ballantyne or driving east on Park like I did. It's only easily seen when you're heading south on Ballantyne. The decor of the place is pretty cool and it's not very crowded during weekday lunch time for us (which is actually 10 to 11 in the morning when starting the nursing shift) so that's a a plus. read more

I decided to stop by for lunch after I craved a hot sandwich, and I wanted to find a nearby mom and pop shop. I came across this place on Yelp. The parking lot is small and tight, having only 11 parking spots. Just be aware of that. I love the look of the dining room... I like the posters and pictures all over the wall. Absolutely I decided to try the regular topped Philly Cheesesteak. I made it to-go, and man it looked super tasty when I opened it at home. It was. A 10 inch sandwich disappeared within 10 minutes. I used sriracha sauce and jalapeños to make it even tastier/spicier. My only change to this sandwich would be to get rid of the mayo... It isn't really necessary (for myself at least). We ordered two philly steaks w/ the works; two philly steaks regular and their philly steak fries w/ the works. The estimated time was fairly accurate, but the FOOD was better than I expected for a delivery order. Most places in my experience kind of skimp on preparation for a delivery order versus a dine in order. Ordered two Philly works sandwiches with one order of steak fries to go. First impression was wow manager/ owner not sure whom he was, wasn't paying attention what so ever to the register, I guess strolling down social media was more important than his responsibilities to customers that want to place an order. I literally stood there looking at him and waited patiently for good 6-7 minutes. On top of this the only cook in the background was talking to someone in his Bluetooth while looking at me. I presume his conversation was a lot more important than saying, "hey jefe there's a customer standing in front of you waiting to order!" I FINALLY placed my order waited now even longer. Now at this point I'm starting to question sanitation. I have all the time in the world to pay close attention to detail. Floors were dirty, things could have been wiped down I mean I could just see so many things that could be taken care of rather than to be on your phone. If your not cooking or helping customers than you should be cleaning simple as that. Another issue is the cook why is he using his phone to make phone calls while he is working I mean wtf. Okay so now let's examine the food as I get home I'm about to take a bite of my Philly Cheese Works, and I swear to you I must have of ordered ONION CHEESE WORKS. I kid you not there was so much F**king onions I can't even eat the food. I threw it away wasted about $11 on total crap. My husband was so hungry he ate his, but had to take a shower immediately after eating a pound of diced onions.
