If you grew up in the Northeast, this goes without saying. It is the BREAD (sub roll) that mostly defines a cheesesteak sandwich. I order the regular Cheese Steak (no onions). I add hot peppers from the condiment bar. The bread at Philly's Best is excellent. It is robust yet tender, lightly chewy, and holds up well to the juices that accompany the steak. As a bonus, the steak is NOT overcooked (vs John's Philly in HB). My only, and ONLY critique is the prep of the hot peppers. They are roughly prepared without concern for stems or ease of use. Jesus guys, just quickly core the damn things, then whack em. However, the excellent (best outside of Globe Deli) free pickles partially make up for the inconsiderate hot pepper prep. Otherwise, a superb offering. I drive miles (past many pretenders) to get to Philly's Best. read more

Had a total craving the other day since I could smell my neighbors cooking peppers and onions. Went for a take out chicken's best and was out in no time on my way home to enjoy. And it totally satisfied my craving. read more

[Insert sad face] What happened to this location? We ordered two sandwiches that we always get... Phillys Best Chicken and Pork Roll on Kaiser. The chicken sandwich had almost no chicken, but mostly peppers and mushrooms. Normally the chicken fills the bun out, but this time it was all loaded in the middle, leaving both ends just bun. Next was the disaster of a Pork Roll sandwich. I don't even know where to start with this one. The positive was the 4 pieces of Taylor's ham were cooked pretty well, but normally you get 6-8 slices. Then there was the shredded lettuce. It doesnt come with shredded lettuce! The lettuce was mixed in with the cheese, so we had to scrape all of it off the sandwich. The Kaiser roll was hard and stale, so in the end we just ate the meat off the sandwich. I can't tell you how disappointed we are, but until we find a new location we won't be having phillys best. read more

I am a Jersey girl so I've had lots of cheesesteak sandwiches. Living here I get a taste of home when I go to Philly's Best. I have heard great things about other's in this area too. Seems you can't go wrong. I get the cheesesteak but I also get the Taylor Pork Roll sandwich at times. You can't buy Taylor Pork Roll here either. It would be hard to decide which is my favorite. I once tried to buy just the rolls to take home but that will not happen. The stores don't allow it. I was disappointed but I totally get it. Best Cheese Steaks in OC that Ive had pay for the extra meat and extra cheese and its even better.. 10 bucks for one sandwich seems extreme but it is damn good... Guys they work there are always cool and full of good energy definitely recommend this place for a good Philly hoggie of any kind plus their fries with vinegar are amazing! read more

Great food but I stopped going. Very dirty inside, I wish they would use gloves. The cashier was seen handling money and food without washing in-between. Nasty! Instead the closest one is in rancho santa margarita and when i get the craving i will drive out there. read more

Short review because there isn't much more to say than the food here is amazing. There is not another cheesesteak I have eaten that compares to Philly's Best. A lunch of a cheesesteak, fries, and drink may run you a bit higher than other quick-stop places (about $12 or so), but it is absolutely worth it. The staff is friendly and you can watch them prepare your food so you know it is fresh. Love Philly's Best! read more

Chef Tony is originally from Philly, and he says that this is as close as you will get to being back home. That's a big compliment coming from a big man. This place gets crowded at Lunch, so I always call ahead. I also like this location because it takes credit cards...unlike the location in Irvine that smells like B.O. from all of the high school kids. Super friendly staff. Consistently good sandwich. This is the best Philly's Best! Not only is the food great everytime you go here (ive been coming once a month for years now), but the employees are always very nice and friendly. Sign up online for their coupon deals - sometimes (though very rare) they send out buy one get one free's! try the cheese steak with extra cheese.. btw, its not as bad as you think, calories are about half what i was thinking. read more

I'm afraid they had a tough time at lunch today. They lost my ticket, and I ended up waiting 35 minutes for my lunch today. At least they didn't make excuses and appologized, but it was a long wait today. I am usually in a hurry at lunch, so I'm not going to come back here. Great place for a nice sandwich. They put plenty of meat on it and you get to eat all the pickles you want. The fries are always brown so I don't know if its old oil or if they over cook them anyway I don't like the taste of them. read more

Okay so I've eaten here probably 4 or 5 times---given it more than enough chances with different menu items. This review will be based on tonight's experience. I'm not from philly, but I am from the bay area, and I know good food. My definition of a philly is meat, cheese, and sauteed onions, mushrooms, and green bell pepper...THAT's a classic philly. Well, they don't have that. So tonight I go in for a chicken philly. I always get their menu confused with Jersey Mike's and I remembered being unuhappy that one of them didn't have bell peppers. So I ask the kid, "are the sweet peppers on your phillies bell peppers, or some other kind of pepper?" (I have heard bell pepper also be referred to as sweet bell). His response: "They are sweet, not hot." okay. not my question. "But are they BELL PEPPERS?" him: "umm, not really sure, I don't think so." Okay. that's a shame. Also a shame he is not knowledgeable about the product he is serving. So I order the chicken philly with mushrooms, cheese, and add grilled onions, no peppers. Also got a side of fries. My food was ready in about 3 minutes---too quick if you ask me---I should have known that my fries were going to be soggy and floppy. I was the only customer there, what's the rush? Finish cooking my fries! So I get home to eat the philly and I open it up and the mushrooms are floppy and slimy----obviously pre-cooked in a large batch and then tossed in---no signs of grilling or sauteeing at all. I pulled as many out as I could. The meat was so-so, tasted like leftovers. And they probably were, given how quickly it was ready. The bread was good, I'll give them that, and my only complaint about the onions is that there were barely any (and I think I paid extra to add them, too). Oh and unless you want processed cheese, your only choice is provolone. Oh and they charge 50 cents for ranch and it was so terribly vinegary and sour (obviously cheapo bottled brand) that I couldn't eat it. If you want a good philly, go to teddy's deli. It's only a few blocks further, their whole menu is excellent, and their customer service is great too. I give philly's best 2 stars because my food was hot and it was ready quickly. But based on taste/quality of product and service, they would get a zero. Never coming here again, anything is a better option than this! I'd rather stay home and eat cereal and save my $11. read more

For a good sandwich, I go to Mr. Pickles. For a cheesesteak or any type of Philly food, Philly's Best is the place to go. The cheese is oozy, the onions are sweet, and the meat is delicious. I just came from the Philly's Best in Lake Forest. Their 25th anniversary special day. Very busy, waited in line for a bit. But wow for the amount of people there, they were doing a bangup job. So professional and checking to make sure every single order was right with all the confusion of so many. Took it to go as my son was home recovering from surgery. this is the best food ever. the best time to come is on Sundays at one, when no one is around accept the Eagle's game. great if you need a five dollar sandwich to get from that monotonic period between breakfast and dinner. even if you don't like cheesesteaks, never heard of cheesesteaks, or are allergic to cheesesteaks, you'll love this, just like every other person i bring here. read more
