A lot of coffee options. Fresh coffee. Nice place to hang out and do work as the environment is spacious and there is plenty of seating. I think the coffee is good. The baristas do a good job answering your questions. I like the coffees I've had and even bought some beans to take home and make on our own. They asked, "Where in San Diego?" I said anywhere in North County. Almost 2 years later we heard the were opening a spot in Encinitas. We were so excited! My new favorite coffee shop! This location is super spacious - there are many tables inside and a few outside as well. I loved the ambiance here. There is a small parking lot, but you can easily find street parking nearby and just walk. When you walk in, you order at the barista and then go down the counter and pay at the cashier. The baristas there have been super friendly and seem to want to help you get the right drink. My favorites are the mint mojito, mocha tesora, and the philtered soul. I haven't had a bad drink here and I always leave super happy and ready for the day. Definitely worth the drive to Encinitas. read more

However, if you love coffee black or with simple cream and sugar, you won't be disappointed! There are plenty of blend options and each one is delicious. Omgosh, FINALLY, Philz has arrived! I remember when I wrote my review of the San Jose location that I had discovered a few years back, not-so-subtly begging that Philz open a location in the SD area so when I saw the sign that they were arriving, I told everyone and their mom! Apparently, I wasn't the only one. Coming just a little after a week of their soft opening, this place was far from empty with every table filled. Luckily, we were able to grab a seat after a table vacated just as we were waiting for our beverages. It's been awhile since I've been to Philz so I didn't remember that when you get to the register to pay for your coffee, you hafta remember what you ordered. Seems easy enough right but we did not remember and unfortunately, the distance between the drink menu and the register were not close enough that you could just peek around to remind yourself. According to the barista, you will know SO much about the coffee drink you're ordering that by the time you get to the register, you shant forget. Sorry to say, not true! I know, I'm sure that MOST diehards would find this unacceptable, but if you're coming with friends and just ordering quickly or relying on your barista to make a rec, I guarantee, you will forget what you ordered so I hope they will consider a small menu at the register for reference. What makes this coffee so great and amazing is that each cup is hand poured and customized to your preference. EVERYTHING is done by the barista brewing your perfect cup! Yes, that includes creaming and sugaring your coffee to the perfect taste! It can seem quite painful and cumbersome to some but you're paying for this perfectly brewed cup, which can take up to 10 minutes to receive so you mine as well ask for it to your liking! The layout isn't as large as you'd hope, with limited tables for the popularity of this place so I would expect that unless you get here early or are able to grab a spot by chance, tables and chairs will be hard to come by. They offer some bites and bagels as well as baked goods and some to-go food options. Service was mediocre. Our barista was polite but it felt very staged. The cashier was very unenthusiastic and service definitely wasn't a priority. My good friend from Seattle loved the coffee, which he drinks black but my family thought it was just ok. I thought it was good but definitely didn't live up to my memories of the bay area. There is a parking lot in front of the store and street parking in the neighborhood. I'm happy that Philz has come to town but I'm hoping after things settle, I'll have a better experience the next time around. I'd hate to be heartbroken over this location not having the same QA and standards, esp after hoping for it to be here after so many years. read more

Being a Bay Area fan of Phil's I was happy to learn they were expanding into San Diego! The overall ordering experience can be slow if they are busy, so I recommend using the app and planning ahead if you are under time constraints. Great staff and amazing coffee!! read more

Gorgeous pour overs? You bet! Philz, I'm so happy you've made it to San Diego. The staff here are so friendly, talkative and accommodating. And literally, I mean accommodating. It was kind of late in the afternoon but with a craving for coffee, I couldn't resist stopping by Philz. I wanted their mint mojito iced coffee but I wanted it decaf, and that's exactly what they made for me! I heard a few other customers requesting a little twist to their menu or simply share their cravings, and the baristas were able to whip up any request, really. If you haven't had it, please try the mint mojito iced coffee. It's definitely a sweet treat, so if you aren't into sweet coffee you can tell them less sweet. For snacks, I recommend the avocado toast--you won't regret it! It's the perfect combo with the mint mojito iced coffee. Love that the toast is peppery and full of avocado with each bite. With plenty of seating inside, a small parking lot and street parking, you cannot go wrong with this hang out spot. read more

Weird place The ordering is really strange and not well explained. You just randomly walk up to this huge counter with no distinct line. So everybody is just milling about unsure who is first and how to order. Then you have to make your way to the opposite end of the store to pay. But wait, then you have return back to the other side of the store where you started and mill about with the people who are waiting to order coffee as you wait for your coffee to be made. Also strange, they have literally like 10 to 15 different kinds of coffee but can't tell you what's in these blends. Apparently it's a big secret what origin coffees are in these blends. They don't even know if their coffee is Indian, African or South America. They only categorize them by dark, light and medium. I mean how many different ways can you differentiate while saying that a coffee has earthy notes or fruity notes. Oh, and for all that hard work to order, wait in line etc. I didn't even think the coffee tasted that good read more

Absolutely the worst coffee I have ever paid for. I should have just gone to literally any gas station. Paid over 10 dollars for two coffees that were, to be honest, terrible. It's took 25 minutes to get two coffees, which would have been fine if there were more than two people in line. I can't understand what took so long. I tried to order a flat white- pretty basic coffee and they said they don't do espresso. The coffee they did give me as their "best attempt" was trash. I cannot say I have ever had a worse coffee or experience. read more

Really enjoyed my coffee at this place wonderful flavor, rocketship caffeine. And I don't really use coffee houses for their ambience, just for The coffee. Not much more to say, other than there's a lot of parking in the parking lot so it is easy in an easy out. Not your usual Starbucks as this is all custom-made.
