I got to Philz and was complaining because Berkeley is so crowded and parking is possible and this and that but THEN a seat magically opened up at this Philz and I sipped my coffee rose and its just too goood. This is a new limited time drink and as a mint mojito fan, I love it! The rose flavor is subtle but it's sweet and creamy Nice touch that it's Rose and it's February. Philz is the best. Eh. Not a fan. The ordering process seemed like something that could be improved or more clear. Too many customers standing around and not sure where to order from as it's not your typical coffee shop. Not sure what all the hype is. Seems like a bunch of flavored coffee with mint and other ingredients you can add to your single serve pour over coffee. I'm a huge fan of the pour over coffee method but I won't be back to Philz. I'll be trying another local roaster next time we're in the area. Doesn't hurt to try it though at least once! It's super popular and long lines. read more

Not much to say except that if you have never tried Philz you really should. The coffee is excellent and every flavor profile really is different. My go-to is a Canopy of Heaven with light cream and no sugar. That way, I really get to taste the wonderful flavors! There is NO espresso here so make sure you're not wanting an espresso experience before coming. That said, if you do want a frothy finish, you can go "Philz Way" at the counter, and your barista will add medium-amount heavy cream and medium-amount brown sugar to the drink. When finished, the drink will be a bit frothy, like a latte for example, and might satisfy that urge. One of the easiest places to park with quick access to the Safeway parking garage. The baristas are encouraged to be themselves and the place is very quirky. It feels like the very antithesis of "corporate coffee" while also, ironically, being a bit corporate itself. But not to take a shot at Philz, it's a wonderful place to go and hang out and work on your computer or talk to friends! You owe it to yourself to check it out if you never have! I love going to this PHILZ!!!! They never fail me on my go to drink, Iced Tesora Sweet & Creamy. It's ALWAYS on point, no matter who makes it. I've been to a few other Philz and every barista seems to make it different, which is weird because you would think there was a standardized recipe for it. Coming up to the Bay lately has been quite a treat for me and it's quite refreshing to see the multitude of Philz Coffee's in the area over Starbucks. I am definitely not a coffee connoisseur nor coffee lover but I will say I appreciate the quality of Philz Coffee over the "basic" and frequently Instagram-ed drinks offered at Starbucks. Many people rave about the Mint Mojito Iced Coffee and although it is quite unique and tasty, for me personally it's not something I would order again and again. I did enjoy their medium roast Philtered Soul that had hints of hazelnut, my fave. My friends who go to Berkeley often come to this Philz to study and the environment and vibe is conducive to productivity. It can get loud at times but there are an abundance of outlets available and table space to do work. Although my friends mostly walk or bus to Philz you can park at the Safeway lot which is right next to Philz! read more

Always the best, happiest customer experience! I love that they have you taste the drink first to make sure you like it before you leave. My favorite coffees are Jacob's Wonderbar (dark roast) and Swiss Water Peru (decaf) with medium sweetness and medium cream. One time, one of the ladies forgot that I said "large" and she made a small. She then made me a large and let me keep the small. She was so nice about it! Keep an eye out for the bean of the month! You can buy a 1 lb bag for $14. April's is a light roast. They will offer to grind the beans at purchase. read more

So my first choice for coffee would be Starbucks or a local cafe. But... I've come here on occasion when I'm craving a bagel from Noah's. My cousin swears by this place, so I decided to give it a shot. To be fair, I put off reviewing this place until my third visit - it makes for a more accurate assessment and everyone has their good and bad days. This review is about my most recent visit, as well as some consistent themes from previous visits. Overall, an average experience, but less than average stars for a place that has a stigma for being more than average. Process: You order, then you pay. Which is kind of cool. But this particular place has two entrances, and I didn't know that the first time I came, and walked right up to the register. I was also met with slight irritation when I had to be told the line to order started on the other end of the cafe - I was in the line to pay. They add the cream and sugar for you. It took me a couple times to figure out how I like it prepared, because they aren't very specific about what they mean by light, medium, and regular cream and sugar and I'm used to doing that myself. Service: The barista was nice enough. He was polite and answered my questions. The service didn't stand out as exceptionally good or bad. Just average. You could clearly see who was a regular and who wasn't. Regulars received warm smiles, friendly conversation, and a thank-you. Everyone else received the average politeness, with or without a consistent thank-you or other nice send off. On this particular visit, there was one person who paid before me. When I walked up to the cashier and told her my order, she just walked away to work on food. Someone replaced her pretty quickly at the register, but that was a huge turn off. I was also almost half way through my coffee before my breakfast sandwich came out. Price: Kind of pricey. I paid $10 for a large (16 oz) coffee and a breakfast sandwich. That's a little much for a pour over with some cream, sugar, and a couple mint leaves... The Coffee: Obviously the reason for the visit to begin with. I would say the coffee is pretty good. The mint leaves are a nice touch. If I'm in the area, I'll order from here over Peet's, but I wouldn't go out of my way for their coffee. read more

There's a reason everyone raves about Philz. It's trendy. It has great service for all those crazy customizers. And most importantly... mint mojito. I'm not a huge coffee drinker myself, but I'll come to Philz for the popular mint mojito or philtered soul. Philz really has a monopoly on me here because I can't think of another place that serves these types of drinks. Never personally done it, but you can bring your own (bigger) cup and pay the price of a small. This particular location on College is super convenient because it's a short bus ride away from the UC Berkeley campus (51B) and Safeway is right next door. I'm also a huge fan of grabbing a pastry from La Farine across the street to accompany my coffee. Only caveat: it's a popular study place so come early if you want a seat! read more

Ok. I love philz. But this location is not as good as I'd hoped. Pro: -cool location closer to elmwood area (finally) -conveniently close to other awesome shops -clean -plentiful outlets Con: -Maybe it's because the Baristas are new but my iced coffee was so watery, I had her remake it but I still can barely taste my coffee. Feel bad to have her remake it again so I just kept it -its big inside but poor use of space - could definitely fit more tables in here and still be comfortable -the air conditioner is blasting - everywhere I sit my head feels like I have a cold fan blowing on it. Philz in berkeley! Staff was very kind, even when I had lost my voice and tried to order. Very nice space to study and meet up with people. Most popular drinks are of course the mint mojito, but i do encourage that you try their black coffee's as well. My only gripe is that my hot black coffee was literally served at the temperatures of burning hell. But how can I complain? its hot coffee! I'm a huge fan of the mint mojito at Philz. I was really excited when this location opened. This Philz is somewhat small in terms of seating, so it isn't as great of a study spot as other ones. However, the location is rather prime. Anytime I stop by Safeway, I always have to debate whether I want a mint mojito with my groceries. I've only ever had a mint mojito, so that's all I can review. The coffee is not too sweet and not too strong. It's a perfect combo of milk and coffee, and the mint is definitely not overwhelming. If you're not a huge coffee fan, you will most likely still enjoy it! I just wish they didn't pack so many big pieces of mint in it, it kinda looks like a salad when you're done with it. read more

I absolutely LOVE Philz Coffee - the BEST. I really liked this location, pretty spacious and generous outdoor seating. The coffee bar is big enough where you aren't hovering over people. Philz sits on a block already served by Peets, Cole Coffee, and Safeway-Starbucks. Yuppie cafes, Spasso and Bicca, are one bus stop away. Rockridge is vying for Most Complicated Coffee per square mile, clearly. Not to sound like Twitter, but I have feelings. The politicalization of lost revenue for neighborhood favorite Cole Coffee makes me paranoid: Is this gentrification? Is this Philz Bagel choosing sides? Will this Mint Mojito--singlehandedly--close Cole Coffee? Am I caffeinated enough to care? The coffee is great, at any rate. Fan favorites are Mint Mojito (iced) and Tesora (hot), of course. Mint Mojito, I recommend to anyone new to the area, on account of its refreshing taste and novelty. But caution--they put too many leaves. Yes, they flavor the coffee and it's wonderful. But leaves in a cup of coffee is like air in a bag of chips: overdone and there's very little to consume. Just FYI. read more

Really love this location! I always try to stop by here on Sundays after grocery shopping for a little treat. LOVE ME SOME PHILZ! Like all Philz, this one has yummy coffee and delicious baked goods. Unlike all Philz, this one is located right next to a Safeway, with large cement steps that are perfect for sitting, sipping, and people-watching. Tip #1: Personal favorite: Tesora + really light cream + really light sugar! Tip #2: Not much street parking nearby, but there's a Safeway next door with upstairs parking. I'm sorry, I prefer this one over the Philz on Shattuck. I do feel kind of bad because there are so many other small, local cafes in Elmwood... but I'd do anything for that mint mojito. Philz Coffee is definitely addictive. I am a Peets drinker through and through and have been since day one of coffee drinking, but if I'm feeling like coffee as a treat I'll go and gets a Philz. I think the Philz in Berkeley has a better feel. I've been to Philz before and sometimes think the ordering system can be a little off. I come to Philz because I love the intimate feel of how it's set up, but the last time I went -- I walked over to pay and the woman at the cash register said, "whenever you're ready," as if I was making her wait. No, "Hey, what'd you order?" It felt very snobbish in a way, which is not what I came to Philz for and definitely not $5 a cup of coffee worth it. My friend had never been to Philz before so I wanted to make sure he knew to let her know what he'd ordered. But honestly beyond that am always happy with the coffee, in love with how smooth the it is, and have always otherwise had pleasant experiences with the staff. read more

Philz is an old standby for me - I try to scope out where the nearest Philz location is whenever I move around the Bay Area. The nice thing about Philz quality is that it's pretty constant wherever you go, and the Elmwood location is no exception. The drinks are always delicious, which is why I keep going back. I'm pretty used to Philz being busy and waiting a bit for the coffee, but sometimes it seems like this location gets a little overwhelmed when a long lines forms at the door. Baristas are always apologizing for the wait and the cashier tries to rush through each customer without really paying attention sometimes. This kind of kills the vibe of this Philz location for me. I'm totally fine with waiting for my coffee, as long as the vibe of the coffee is laid back and relaxed. read more

I got the iced mint mojito. It was pretty good, refreshing. I wished it was a little sweeter, next time I will definitely ask for it to be sweeter. I like they minty taste with the creaminess and sweetness. For you first timers, you wait in line and order with the barista after placing your order you walk over to the register to pay. The barista calls you back up when your drink is ready. The wait it pretty long. I walked in and there was only 2 people in front of me, but it took about 20 minutes for me to order, pay, and receive my drinks. Love the Mint Mojito :D the place has nice trendy feel with a scenic street side view. As for a coffee shop, it is a bit loud due to the amount of customers and the coffee grinder occasionally on. The noise level however can easily be overcome by bringing some noise cancelling earphones. This location also contains a few couches which are comfortable for relaxing and enjoying some of your music (with noise cancelling earphones) and coffee. Parking is of course hard to find, however it should only take a few blocks of walking to the location on a typical Saturday afternoon. I love visiting this location as an alternative place to study outside of Sacramento. Yep that's right, from Sacramento to study at this coffee shop. read more
