Moderately busy area, really nice place to study or a place to get a lot of work done. You can't go wrong with a mint ice mojito. It's a strong creamy texture with a nice compliment of mint, making it all so refreshing. You can also have your drink adjusted on the spot after they make it. 4/5 because sometimes the drink is not super consistent depending on the server, but they do fix it immediately after! read more

Best Philz location in the Berkeley area. They make amazing coffee and are extremely helpful in helping you out, but what I really respect is the way the staff keep the place. It's always very tidy, and I don't think I've ever seen a coffee shop bathroom so clean. Only complaint is that it's often so busy that it can be hard to find a seat, but it's worth waiting for one if you can. read more

This place is my dojo! The music is bumping, the lighting is great, coffee is simply amazing, and the customer service is as good as it'll get. I've been here four times since they've opened up, and they have never failed me. Even this last time, I tried a very different roast, didn't like it at all, but thought I keep that thought to myself. After all, the barista had just ground and brewed the coffee right in front of me. He looked at me and said that if I'm not completely satisfied, he'd make me a totally different drink...AND HE DID! The second cup was 'straight off the chain.' BIG SHOUT OUT TO ELIJAH FOR PUTTING THE CUSTOMER'S SATISFACTION BEFORE HIMSELF. Worth the wait. Worth the price. read more

My sister and brother grabbed me an iced mint mojito and OMG!!! I think it's by far the BEST coffee I ever tasted!! If you love sweet coffee drinks like me I totally recommend you try this. I mean, can anyone really give Philz any less than 5 stars? The staff here is always outgoing and ready to make that special drink for you. I can't say I've ever hung around to enjoy the ambiance of the place. There is a patio between the store and Safeway that patrons enjoy. My visits are usually to grab-&-go. My coffee is almost always taken black which leaves little room for error in terms of an abundance of creams and sugars or lack thereof. All-in-all, this Philz never disappoints... oh, and there's free parking in the parking deck to Safeway which you can enter from either College or Claremont. Cheers!! read more

My absolute fave Philz location-- their staff is amazing and after frequenting for a couple of weeks they've already memorized my drink. I drive 15 minutes to get coffee here but always so worth it. A friend gave me a gift card and I finally found a moment to pop into Philz for the first time. So I stood in line behind 4 people then ordered a coffee and a bagel. The girl at the register then told me that I'm supposed to order my coffee over at the other counter and then pay for it at the register, blah, blah, blah... Okay, so I go over to the other counter and order a Philharmonic. Might as well order the namesake I thought. The girl at that counter asked if I want cream and light, medium, or sweet. Well, I'd rather have milk than cream and how would she know what I consider light, medium or sweet? So medium I guess. Then I go back to the first line and wait behind another 4 people before I get to try and order a bagel and try to pay again. What do I want on my bagel, she asks. What are the choices? I don't see any choices listed anywhere. How about exactly what the bagel says comes with it? Good grief. Now I have to select a choice of tip. Zero seems appropriate but I don't see that option. So 15% I guess. Now I have to keep my ear open for both my coffee and bagel. They don't call your name, only what you ordered. Pretty high chance multiple people ordered a small coffee at this counter and a bagel at that counter. So that creates more confusion for the customers to sort out. So I finally get my coffee and bagel. The bagel was tasty enough but the coffee had a giant spring of mint in it. Yuck. Everyone has their own taste but I don't recall that being listed on the coffee description. I took the mint out and tried to continue the coffee. Yuck. Couldn't do it. Ended up just dumping it in the bushes outside. Should have just chucked the gift card in the bushes too because I'll never come back. read more

I have nothing but awesome things to say about Philz. I'm from Michigan but visit the Bay area pretty often and Philz is always on my daily to-do list. I have tried several of the roasts, I think the Philharmonic is my favorite, and the Iced Mint Mojito is amazing. I also really like their bagels. Didn't like the service, the coffee or the atmosphere. I've been to other Philz coffee shops and they were okay. This one not so much.

Being a self-proclaimed Philz coffee addict I take every opportunity I can to find if one is in the location I'm visiting and I make a streamline for it.. While the coffee is the same in all locations, the reason I give this one 5 stars is for their wonderful service! Not only was the woman making my coffee extremely polite, she was very patient when perfecting my order with more sugar and cream. Also, the cashier was laid back and engaging, even going to the back to give me some free Philz stickers. This behavior might just be because they weren't that busy at the moment, but everyone appeared to be in a good mood, even the students casually studying in the back. read more

Personally not a huge fan of the big communal table. I want my own personal space to do my thing or have a conversation with someone. Lots of space outside though which is really nice to sit when it's warm and sunny out. Love Philz so much, hence the three stars, but I'm shaving off the other two stars due to personal space preference. I crave Philz, but honestly not all Philz is created equal. I tried the Shattuck location and was disappointed in service and taste (it was cold and not that creamy). This location, however, is the best. The best service I've had at Philz by far (even better than fancy schmancy Palo Alto Philz... Bears Rule!). The barrista here was incredibly friendly and helpful. I wanted to buy a pound of coffee to take home but wasn't sure which to get and what to blend, so he let me sample two of his favorite blends (both delicious, but the Silken Splendor was heaven and hands down my winner). No, I can never get my coffee to taste as good as it does from here, but it's still worth getting by the pound and the ambiance and friendly service here along with the fabulous coffee is worth coming to any time. These people also genuinely look like they like their jobs, which is nice to see. If I lived closer, I would be here every day. I love Philz Coffee, but they are certainly not known for their customer service. The first time I came here was the first weekend they were open. The line was long, but there was an employee who stood at the head of the line assuring patrons that they would be helping us soon. They get points for trying. Once I ordered my drink, I patiently waited. And waited. And waited. When a few people who ordered after I did had already gotten their drinks, I went to ask the barista if mine was on the way. He snapped at me that the guy he was helping had ordered before me (which he hadn't), and that my drink was being made). It's ok if he forgot my drink, but to accuse me that I was stepping ahead was just rude. I waited patiently some more. I went to check on my drink since it seemed like it slipped his mind again. He was fumbling around and finally made my drink. It was wrong, of course. I had ordered and paid for a large, but he made a small. I asked for soy milk, not regular. And I wanted it sweet and creamy. Three strikes for you, buddy. In the end, he became apologetic and gave me a card for a free drink on my next visit. The whole ordeal just left a bad taste in my mouth. I also tried their Order Ahead service, which is great for picking up on the way to work. The last time I used it, the barista did not secure the lid on the drinks, and it spilled out as I was picking them up. That was frustrating to have hot coffee spill all over my hands. Overall, customer service is lacking (no surprise for a Philz though). The coffee is good, if they can remember your order. read more

This Philz, right here? Absolute favorite Philz spot hands down. It use to be the location on Gilman & 9th in Berkeley until that yummy Philz worker Alo moved to this spot. Let me tell you why this location rocks. This place is conveniently located in the Rockridge area in Oakland so there's a gazillion convenient ways to get here. The baristas here know what they're doing, and you can tell they enjoy working there because they genuinely care about making the drink and the experience just right for you. I can only attribute this great atmosphere to the work culture that their management staff has fostered here. What else could you ask for? Well, they have these bomb ass pastries called kouign-amanns (don't worry I had to google the spelling) that I get toasted with my cup of Ecstatic Iced Coffee. So effing good. My morning isn't complete without this awesome duo. So glad there's a Philz in the Town! Wish there were more in Oakland. read more

Good coffee, not so great experience. I think they're trying to work out all of the kinks. The counter where I ordered was covered in coffee stains. So much that I wanted to back away from the counter rather than approach it to place my order. The server was processing a bunch of drinks and she seemed a little overloaded. I didn't get the feeling the team that day was concerned about providing a great experience. The place didn't have the standard Philz vibe. read more

Sweet Bahjeezas! Was on my way to see the green mermaid when I spotted Phils, figuring I might try something different, I gave it a shot, no pun intended. Staff was super nice to a newb and I got a killer cup of joe! Very loud echoey building, not sure how anyone studying there was getting anything into their brains and coffee was 3 times the price of my regular cup.
