Disappointing update to my favorite local routine. I have been a dedicated regular at Feels Coffee, choosing them over the surrounding Starbucks and Peet's because of their unique menu and usually great service. My absolute go-to ritual has been ordering the peanut butter cup cold brew customized with their rose frosting on top--a drink I've happily ordered and posted photos of multiple times without a single issue. Unfortunately, today's visit was a major customer service miss. I ordered my usual custom drink alongside a bacon croissant sandwich. I will say, the sandwich was absolutely excellent--really delicious, fresh, and perfectly made. But the beverage breakdown was the real disappointment. There was some initial hesitation from the barista when I ordered, but the transaction went through. However, after waiting, I was handed a standard drink without the modification. When I pointed it out, I was simply told, "Oh, we can't do that anymore." I completely understand that businesses change policies and seasonal items evolve. However, the communication here was the issue. It should have been handled at the register when I placed the order--either by politely letting me know about a policy change so I could choose a different drink, or by honoring it one final time as a courtesy to a frequent customer. Sneaking a different drink through and letting me find out at the pickup counter is not how you treat regulars. Shoutout to the incredibly kind gentle-person working the register who stepped in, checked on me, and handled my refund with absolute grace and professionalism--he is the reason this isn't a 1-star review. The food is great, so who knows, I may pop back in to see what the winter seasonal menu brings. But for now, this experience left a pretty bitter taste in my mouth. read more

I have been here a few time picking up some of their pastries from the To Good To Go app, where you can get a variety of pastries for a cheap price at the end of the day when they don't sell out. Each one of the plate is bag and price is $4.75 plus tax on the TGTG app. Their almond croissant is to die for, that is one of my favorites. 3.5 stars Been here a couple times but it's always so inconsistent . Today both my coffees were so sweet when I asked for medium cream and light (sugar)sweetness on both of them . One I made a mistake on but left in the notes for light sweetness but she acknowledged I may have made a mistake . Yet the coffee tasted like I was drinking sugar coffee on both of my orders . Philz coffee is a lovely franchise. I normally get the mint mojito iced coffee. I'm looking forward to trying new flavors since this location is more accessible to me. Everything they serve seems to be high quality. And the NY style cheddar jalapeño bagel is so fire! Although I'm glad to have one near by, the location itself is odd to me. There is no parking. There is a VERY SMALL Sprouts parking lot and down the street is a metered lot. I hope that doesn't impact the stores ability to stay open. The only downside to Philz in general, is that they are slow. I've visited several locations and they all seem to be the same. Philz is a very chill relaxed environment. So please have patience! Several tables and benches to sit at. Two separate unisex restrooms. The service was very friendly, courteous, and polite. Yuzu Twist Lemon Tea: a refreshing, limited-time iced beverage combining cold-brewed black tea, lemonade, and vibrant citrus yuzu with fresh mint (4/5). This is one of my favorites here. The TGTG Surprise Bag contained... Cherry Almond Coffee Cake - seasonal item (4/5). Wow, just as I hoped it would be. I'd get this again! Philz Coffee opened recently on the ground floor of Centro Callan in a corner commercial space. Brand new space with specialized decor reminiscent of Trader Joe's. Philz has entered private equity ownership since my last visit in Castro Valley. Menu has expanded from its core coffee blends. Offerings (darker/medium/lighter blends, cookies, croissants, bagels, sandwiches, burritos, pastries, muffins, tea, breakfast, coffee beans, merch.. Parking is nonexistent except for paid meters, or in shopping center across the street. Sprouts may not be an option. Seating is some tables and benches inside or tables outside. Inside seating is tight, not a lot of space. Ordering was quick as line was only 1 person. Waiting for drinks 6 minutes. Much better than 30 minutes in C.V. Sips: Tantalizing Turkish (med. 16 oz. 5.80) -didn't know this was a rebrand of Aromatic Arabic Blend 5.30) I had before. Tastes different. Initially harsh, it mellowed out later to be a smoother easy sipping but not bold sip. -new formula: cardamon, mint, aromatic Arabic coffee blend. Something missing? Haven't been to a Starbucks for a decade+. Imagine Philz is emanating Star for good or.... 4 stars: semi-worthy:ymmv. Service: excellent. Waited patiently for Philz to open at this location, so I was ready before 8am to head over to their grand opening! The vibe at 7:30am was bussin' and they had more than enough staff and management working hard to take care of all customers in the house! Seeing tables and chairs full of people, including people focused on their laptops and people laughing, and seeing people going in and out of the door made it even more exciting to see their business THRIVING ON DAY ONE! My mom and I enjoyed our fav Kouign-amann pastry and I ordered my iced mint mojito from our takeout orders. All baked goods were fully stocked, nonstop drinks being prepped, and an abundance of samples as their grand opening treats, made this Philz location worth the wait! I had the tiramisu cold brew today and it as good as usual. Husband had the mint mojito and he didn't tell till much later that it wasn't up to par. It tasted rather bland compared to the CV and Fremont location. I am a little confused about parking because the adjacent garage states that it's for Sprouts BUT there is a door that goes from Philz to the garage...so can we park there without getting towed? If we can't park there, then it's all metered street parking which isn't too appealing for a $6 coffee. Overall the inside has more seating than CV and Fremont. I love Philz. I am so glad they have this location in San Leandro now. But I have to say, the last several times I have come to this location have been very disappointing. The baristas are nice, but they seem to need more training. One day I order a Philz mint mojito, creamy but lightly sweet. When I go to drink it, its very sweet. I didnt have time for them to remake it, especially as it already took them a long time to make the drink in the first place. The very next day, I came back and ordered the same thing. Minto Mojito, creamy, lightly sweet, and this time with extra mint. It took forever to make. When it was finally ready, it was actually lightly sweetened this time correctly, but now it wasn't creamy at all and there was no extra mint that I asked for. All that said to just demonstrate how inconsistent this location has been compared to my experience at other philz locations. It's a new spot. It just opened up. They might still be training their staff. They have a lot of staff but drinks were coming out very slow. Shop just opened, was curious about the mint mojito mocha since it has real mint. Waited for the guy ahead of me having a problem using a card. Guy behind counter started talking about some inventory matter with another worker. Continued after the guy ahead finally finished. I waited...and waited...and waited. The woman behind the counter talking to the guy behind the counter came up to the counter, picked something up and then stood back and continued the inventory discussion. I finally gave up and left. As an older woman who has stopped coloring her gray hair, I am getting familiar with the invisibility factor many younger people have towards older women, and I am pretty sure this was at play.
