Our first time here, we picked the place because of good reviews, so we were disappointed with our experience. Pho 54 is a smartly decorated little restaurant in a plaza with a number of restaurants catering to UB North Campus. We showed up on a Saturday night and were surprised to find such a highly reviewed restaurant practically empty. We walk in and are shown to our table. BANG. I hit my knee underneath - it's apparently one of those tables with the gas cooker underneath in case you to do something like shabu-shabu. While we browse the menu, it's a fusion menu with Vietnamese / Thai and Sushi. I'm a little wary of these kinds of menus - if you can't specialize, then is the food going to be any good? While we browse, a lone Westerner sits down behind me. These booths are those cheaply made booths were you can practically feel the pulse of the person up against you. And like a bad plane ride, this person decides he's going to shove and push against me. After a long wait, the waiter takes the Westerner's order first. Our table - we all immediately exchange looks. It's pretty bad to have poor service, but when the lone waiter doesn't take the orders in order of seating, that also means your food will show up later. Our waiter comes across like a character - slacker dude with manbun. We order appetizers and pho - I choose the Pho Bo (Beef), my friend chooses the Hu Tieu Nam Vang (shrimp, calamari, pork). Then we wait. And wait. And wait. And sure enough, lone Western dude gets his food first. He gets his appetizer, he gets his main course. The waiter fawns over him, asking him about his food, how he likes the restaurant and if the broth is too hot or not. Finally, we get our appetizer. Manbun drops the plate in the middle of the table (2 summer rolls) and leaves. Forgetting to provide us with setups and plates, we spend the next 10 minutes trying to wave him over, but he's preoccupied with the cash register and some activity back in the kitchen. I'm waving hard enough to flag 10 NYC taxis but Manbun doesn't notice. While we're flagging him, I notice the Health score here - 74% - and give the place the eye. When Manbun finally sees us, I ask him for plates, setups (chopsticks, forks, napkins) and he trots off to get those for us. We each grab a roll. The pulled chicken inside is so chewy, the fibers pull apart from the roll. Our pho arrives. My beef pho has disappointingly thin broth. A good pho has broth that has been simmering for hours. This has all the depth of a ramen noodle spice pack stirred in hot water. The beef is overcooked, chewy. My friend is very disappointed with his bowl as well as he counts out the 3 shrimp in the entire bowl. There are 4 rings of calamari. That's it. So a disappointing meal at an otherwise well-reviewed Yelp restaurant. I have a theory - I'm guessing that hungry college students are scoring the place based on convenience. It's literally just across from North Campus. I also wonder if the empty Saturday night meant that without their usual student clientele (it's summer break), the kitchen at Pho 54 just didn't put as much care into their food as they normally would. Near UB is a small plaza with a bunch of places to eat. One is Pho 54. Walking in you are greated immediately and seated in comfortable seating. We were in a booth. They are spacious. I think you can place orders on a screen by the table, but am not sure. We placed ours with the waiter. Pad Thai was the choice for both. Their small lunch size is super generous. It was really good. I'd certainly go back. There were other things I'd like to try on the menu as well. I'm guessing they do a great business from UB. We were there over the holidays so it wasn't too busy for an early lunch. Easy parking. read more

My fiancé and I were looking for something quick to eat and settled on this place. Came on a Friday night and we were seated immediately. I got the pad see ew while he got the large pho. My pad see ew was pretty good! The soy sauce flavor was good, and it wasn't overly salty. The noodles were thicker than what I was normally used to, but that didn't cover me. My fiancé said his pho was really good too. Prices were a tad high for what I am used to, but at least the portions were big enough for me to take half of it home. read more

The beef pho was delicious and has 4 size options. It comes standard with beef slices, meatballs, tendon, and tripe but you can request any of those to not be in it, I skipped on the tripe and tendon. They bring sprouts, limes, and basil on the side. We had four people and they initially only brought one plate but they brought a second on request. Service was great. We were greeted as soon as we walked in and were waited on in a timely fashion including multiple stops at our table throughout our time there to make sure everything was good. read more

The food was overall okay. I ordered the vermicelli with pork and spring roll. The vermicelli was a bit watery (either they didn't drain the veg or noodles very well) and it came with fried pieces of spam instead of some form of sautéed/grilled pork like I'm used to. The issue I have is the price, for a normal sized bowl of vermicelli with spam and 2 spring rolls it cost $16, at the price I'd hope for some real meat and some greater diversity it fresh vegetables. read more

I am very disappointed with this restaurant and how rude they were. I will never give them my business again. When my husband picked up the food, they never gave him an itemized receipt, just the receipt with the total amount. When he came home, he said the bill seemed off. I looked back on their site, and we ordered one Dragon roll ($14), which the avocado was brown, 1 large Pho Ga ($15), and 1 chicken Pad Prid Khing ($13). I called to say that there was a mistake the person on the other end didn't care. When I told him the prices their site indicated, he told me I must have got the prices from the wrong site. The problem with that was I used their direct website, not the menu feature on google. Plus, I dialed the phone number directly from Google, to place the oder, I indicated a pic to illustrate what I mean. I went here today with my dad for lunch. This pho is perfect for a cold and rainy day!! I had the vegetable pho and the broth was extremely flavorful. The bits of tofu were delicious. I had a Vietnamese vermicilli bowl and it was really good. I think if you ask for the sauce in the side it would be a good idea because you can control how sweet your dish is going to end up. I also got a Vietnamese pork pancake appetizer and it was really good. I didn't know what it was but i got it because I was curious and I'm glad I did. It also comes with a sweet sauce on the side which was tasty. Originally we had wanted the bahn mi appetizer but the waitress informed us that they had no more so I'm guessing it might be good? I'd probably go to try it next time. The service was good. They were friendly and out waitress who I also think was a co-owner taught us how to say the Vietnamese dishes which was cool. The restaurant was clean and nice looking once you walk in. We didn't have to wait and we got to pick our seat. We were the only ones in the restaurant. They really didn't have people coming to dine in but they had a lot of people coming in to pick up orders. The waitress brought us one glass each of water when we sat down. After that they didn't ask if we wanted other drinks and they never once came around for refills. We ordered yellow curry, sizzling duck, two different types of fried rice, and the fried banana for dessert. My daughter ordered the yellow curry spicy and it wasn't spicy at all. Next time she'll have to ask for Asian spicy to see if that makes a difference (that's what they title the hottest heat level for their food). We also ordered the dessert to come at the same time as the dinner and they forgot. We had to go to the counter after fifteen minutes of them serving the good to ask if it was coming. If you plan to eat here make sure you have extra time as it takes a while for the food to come out. They also didn't check in on us once to see if we needed anything, to see if we were happy with the food, etc. Lastly, we ordered the fried banana. We never said we wanted it with coconut and it came covered in it. If you don't like coconut.... I called and without hesitation they drove 2 sides over to me. The food was also very good. This restaurant seems a little bit off the beaten path but it's definitely worth visiting. Large menu with lots of vegetarian and gluten-free options. My friend had the chicken satay and some sushi and he loved both. The satay sauce was amazing. I had the vegan entrée and it was tofu with steamed vegetables and a brown garlic sauce and it was extra yummy. Our food was fabulous! I'm a bit fussy, okay, very fussy, when it comes to Asian cuisine. I want fresh, clean food with lots of flavor -not greasy, salty or doused with sugar. Pho 54 has gone beyond my expectations on the two recent times we've been here. The flavors in all our dishes popped in a good way. We could taste the ingredients, ginger, Thai spices, peanuts, fresh herbs added to calamari Pad Thai, coconut shrimp, Saigon fried rice and curry. We especially love that we could chose brown or white rice. Neither was the tasteless, commonly used white and white - brown rice commonly found in other Asian restaurants with some exceptions.
