Well it's (kinda) that time of year...fall(?) I guess....Anyway, it hit a whooping 50-something degrees last night and I had a craving for some soup. My girls were freezing when I picked them up from practice so I immediately thought of pho. It was about 7:35ish when we arrived and there was a family seated inside, enjoying their meal immensely. We were greeted by the waitress and given a menu for takeout. I decided to get 3 seafood pho's for the hubby, child and I, complete with Shrimp, imitation crab and fish balls (no clue what they are either but I'll give 'em a try!) Once we got home and pulled everything from the bag I noticed our only casualty was one small container of some oil based, chili flake concoction. In the other containers were the pho noodles along with slices of limes, fresh sliced jalapeños, and fresh twigs of basil and then also the container of soup which had the shrimp, imitation crab, and those white, dense-looking fish balls! Once we took everything from the containers and placed it all into big bowls, we dug in! Me, being the tremendous mother that I am, let my child eat a fish ball first and tell me how it was! She shrugged her shoulders and said "good." Well, thanks for the enthusiasm child! Apprehensive, but never one to shy away from food, I bit into one. Not bad! I also bit into something that tasted like black licorice (yuck!) and promptly figured the only thing it could have been was the fresh basil. Overall we all enjoyed our soup. It had just the right amount of spice and I ended up really liking the fish balls. The restaurant is fairly small but we will come back and try it out one day. read more

This is my 2nd fav pho place in town! They offer a vegan pho soup which is what I always get when I come here. Recently they quit carrying mushrooms which really sucks but the soup is still really good as it has carrots, tofu, cabbage, and noodles. The broth always has great flavor and the portions are huge. We also tried the kimchi fried rice today and omg this is a must. Like legit you have to get the kimchi fried rice! I also ordered extra tofu to add and it was seriously such a good meal! The food tasted kind of rancid for some reason pho 88 is always kind of a hit or miss with the broth tasting good. Some days I go and the broth is rich and then I go on a day like today and the broth is rancid. Pro tip when ordering takeout, ask for extra basil and look in the box where they put the noodles and veggies because usually for takeout orders they give you wilted basil and not fresh bean sprouts. like everyone else is saying it was that one server girl that is ringing up to go orders and also serving the diner. She's very polite and is probably the only reason I'm giving this place two stars. she has excellent customer service. I bet the only reason why the food tastes bad is because of the owners being stingy with good ingredients for to go orders. this place is good and convenient because it's close but if you have the time and gas to go somewhere for good pho I would HIGHLY recommend New Saigon on Union Avenue. It is kind of sketchy so I try to avoid it during dusk but their pho is always a hit!! read more

I am from SoCal and just moved here 2 years ago. I have been eating Vietnamese food for over 30 years in Westminster (little Saigon) we have tried 5 Pho restaurants and could not believe the difference in taste from what we were use to, every place we tried sucked, the flavor of the broth, the meat quality, half the places didn't give you all the condiments needed to properly eat and enjoy Pho. Well we found this place a few weeks ago, and compared to any other place in Bakersfield this is the best for here and the closest to authentic Pho. read more

3.5 stars Pho 88 is in the midst of an identity crisis: Is it Vietnamese? Is it Chinese? Is it Korean? Safe to say, it's a medley of all 3; the owner appears to be Korean pushing for a Vietnamese cuisine with Korean underpinnings. I ordered the #7: pho tai, chin + bo vien which is just raw steak, well done brisket and some meatballs. For a basic small bowl you pay $9.95 (I think), but with the addition of the meatballs, I paid an additional $2.50. At other pho places, you can replace meats with no additional cost - here, the price of a dac biet was the same. I thought the broth was pretty good considering it was Korean owned, but some of the meat, especially the tai, was rather chewy. They do give you a generous amount of everything, so that I appreciate, however there are some oddities to the restaurant itself: hot plate in the middle of the tables with no real purpose, no small side dishes (typically in Vietnamese restaurants for dipping sauce) unless you asked for it, metal chopsticks making it hard scoop up for pho noodles. Came here for dinner with my family. We were craving pho but didn't want to drive that far. Decided to try this place out. The inside was cozy but the atmosphere was pretty nice looking. We got the combination pho and the Spivey Korean noodle soup and started with a grilled pork spring rolls. The grilled pork spring rolls were pretty thick but the pork was kinda too Krispy. The pho was pretty decent but the star of the show was the Korean spicy noodle soup. Had a good amount of heat and the noodles were authentic. Has a mix of seafood which I really liked. DONT EAT HERE‼ If I can give this place ZERO stars, I would. Im from Fresno, and they have many pho restaurants there, ive also worked as a waitress as a pho restaurant. So I would consider myself pretty experienced in this field. First of all when my husband and I walked in, a male server looked at us and walk away. My husband and I stood by the door for about 10 minutes, when the male server showed us where to sit, he made us go grab the food menu. when the male server asked us if we were ready to order, he didnt bother coming to our table and expected us to yell our order across another table. we spoke low so that he'll come to us, which he did. we ordered our food which was 2 thai teas, pho#2, a seafood pho, and gyoza. They serve us our thai teas, mine tasted kind of off and my husbands tasted really good. Our pho came next and the broth was different from any pho broth. it was really sour. the only ingredients that were on our table was soysauce, sriracha, chilli oil and garlic sriracha. When they served us our pho, the noodles were WAY too overcooked! i would pick up the noodles and they would break! Same with my husband. After eating our pho for a few minutes, our gyoza came and i automatically knew that they were costco gyoza. and they also served it with straight soysauce, not even diluted soysauce. i didnt bother eating the gyoza but my husband ate 2 and did not enjoy it. I didnt finish my pho because i didnt like the food and was unsettling to my stomach. My husband was almost finished with his food until... he found a PLASTIC WRAPPER in his soup! I took a picture of it and we told this really nice latina waitress and she said "omg let me go take it to the back" so she and did and you wont believe it, but they gave us the same bowl and took out the plastic and said that it was okay because it was a crab wrapper. My husband argued that it shouldnt have been there in the first place and suggested that they should do something about it. The male server came out and said that they couldnt do anything about it. I wouldnt mind paying for it but the fact that they said the couldnt do anything about it? that is a CHOKING HAZARD! the least they couldve done was apologize which they didnt!! my husband's soup shouldve been free at that point. anyways he left first because he was getting very angry and i stayed to pay for the food. i hope the health department comes to this place soon since its noted that they have MULTIPLE HEALTH VIOLATIONS here!! read more

I think I found my new pho spot. This soup is delicious and tastes very fresh. The broth did not have any sort of aftertaste, so I appreciate that. The Thai tea was not that good, and I believe they do not have fountain beverages. I ordered coke and got a can. The restaurant is a little small, but nothing too bad. There was a full restaurant at 5 PM on a Sunday evening. The service is decent. Some people who were sat after us got their order taken before us, which annoyed my hungry self, but it wasn't that big of a deal. read more

I was really happy to find black bean noodle(Korean-Chinese dish), which is a rare find in Bakersfield. I've tried their Pho, black bean noodle, spicy seafood soup noodle, orange chicken and Vietnamese vermicelli. I wasn't impressed with any of them, unfortunately. Black noodle had meat from Pho in it, spicy seafood noodle was super salty and had too little vege in it, orange chicken didn't taste like it was made with fresh chicken, and Pho was also mediocre. The friendliness of staff is hit or miss. Sometimes you get a friendly staff and sometimes you don't. The tables and sauces on the table aren't that clean and sometimes the utensils feels greasy to touch. I came here few times for my black bean noodle fix, but i might opt to just making it home going forward. read more

Can I give less than one star? The pad Thai I ordered was not pad Thai. It had noodles, bean sprouts, onions, and shrimp. Tasted OK but was not pad Thai. My wife has celiac disease and everything we ask about regarding gluten we were told everything had gluten. She ordered steamed rice with two eggs over easy. The eggs were burned on both sides and we asked to remake them and the chef said he could not make them over easy. The waitress was so embarrassed for him being such an a-hole. As you can see in the photo, the food is overpriced ($14.52) and bland. I don't recommend this place. It's too overpriced for their bland, mediocre food menus. If you want Vietnamese food, go to Pho Vy or Rolls and Grills. They're good is cheaper, better tasting and higher quality than this place. read more

I've been coming here for about 2 years now and I still like the food from here. To be honest, I stick to my favorites which are the Spicy Beef Pho and the Pad Thai chicken. I've been looking at recent reviews and I can see the frustration most customers have. I only do take out and majority of folks with bad experiences are dine-in. I'm pleased with my service every time I come to pick up my food. It's usually ready within 15-20 mins and I live about 15 mins away. So I call it in and I hop in my car. By the time I get there it's usually ready for me. The portions are still relatively large for both dishes and always hot. Only reason I didn't give it a 5 star is because the take out prices keep going up. I remember when they didn't have that and I know since the pandemic hit, they obviously increased their take out which meant more supplies for take out, but now it's getting a little out of hand. Anyways, I'll still come, but not as often as I'd like! read more

Called in an order last night and my fiancé picked it up when he got home the order was wrong. I called pho 88 and they were already aware of the mistake and offered different options to correct the error, I chose to go back tonight and get the corrected order I called ahead again and they knew exactly who I was and got the order going. When I got home and opened the order it had a hand written note and a drink in thr bag!!! Above and beyond to correct a error. Things happen and no one is perfect but I thought this note and drink were totally not expected and very much appreciated. That is customer service and I'll for sure be back!!! Servers are great, cooks are swift, and the seating is comfy and spacious enough. Though the middle grills on the table can kind of crowd. I enjoyed the brisket, soft tendon, flank and tripe pho so much (#2 pho). No one should be scared of the latter three, like I've noticed many are. It's really good for you and they're really tasty. Pho ga on the other hand has really good noodles and chicken, but the broth was salty and which kinda takes away from appreciating it. Broth is everything when it comes to pho. It's the first thing you taste. Odd odor, like uncooked chicken noodle when you open a can of Campbell's. Don't worry, it wasn't old and we did not get sick. I'm just saying that it was kind of like that. A bit offensive to the senses. I'd say dodge the chicken pho. Pork BBQ spring rolls are a good choice of appetizer. This place has really gone down hill. I think I'm not coming back. I don't always want pho, which they still do pretty well here, so I order something else. In this case, I ordered pork chop over rice. What I got was anything BUT a pork chop. I got little thin sliced meat bits that were skillet/pan fried in oil. It had the consistency of bacon and had a strange taste to it. I have come here many times, and noticed the quality dropping a bit. This time it hit almost bottom.
