The service was fine (although I did have to ask for water refills) and the place was clean. My boyfriend ordered the vegetarian pho and ordered #11 Combination pho -- both smalls. They gave us a plate with some bean sprouts, two limes, and a few pieces of cilantro. I could have used some more lime and cilantro, but they charge extra for that. Vegetarian: My boyfriend was definitely a fan. He would not stop raving about the bok choy. I tried it and it was pretty good -- tasted like they seasoned it with spicy mustard. After much discussion on the star rating, my boyfriend's love of the bok choy and vegetarian pho is the only reason why this is 4 stars and not 3. #11: My pho was good, but I just kept feeling like something was missing -- I still can't figure out what it is (more veggies? basil?). The noodles were alright, but not the best noodles I've ever had. The meat was fine for me and there was quit a bit of it. Since meats are never my favorite part of pho, I can't say if the meat was good quality or not. The broth by far was the star of the show. It was warm and flavorful and not too salty. It was perfect for a rainy winter night. By the end, I left some of the noodles and more fattier meats and just drank spoonfuls of the soup. It was even better with the hot chili sauce. Conclusion: If you're looking for a vegetarian pho, you'll probably enjoy Pho Avenue. For meat eaters, you'll be satisfied with the #11/combination. I didn't like the charging for extra lime/cilantro/bean sprouts -- especially when there was only one small plate for two people (they gave a solo customer the same size plate) -- and there's a $9 minimum for credit card. We've been coming here since Pho Avenue opened. They're our favorite pho place nearby. My usual order is the number 1 regular and I add sprouts, jalapeños and a squeeze of lime into my bowl. Such. Good. Pho. These guys really know what they're doing. They're also really sweet and they pay attention to you if you need them to. Highly recommend if you want really good pho. We haven't really tried anything else except for the lemonade soda (which is bomb, go for it if that's your thing), because we just really love soup. **Pho Quest Stop #55** With a prime location opposite Whole Foods, this plaza should be a convenient and easily accessible location for those that live or work in the area. Pho Avenue is the newest occupant and most promising of the frequently turned over space. Prior occupant Medi-Dish which I tried in the Spring was closed by the Fall. Wing Fiesta preceded that and the mediocre Pho Ngon was the longest occupant prior to that. Thankfully, Pho Avenue is worlds better than Pho Ngon and it starts with the bright and clean decor. Most tables are for smaller groups, but they do have a single large table in the middle. The menu is clear and straightforward and consists of pho noodle soups as well as dry vermicelli dishes and rice plates. An assortment of appetizers and drinks round out the menu and while they're in Grand Opening Mode (today was day #3) sodas are complimentary. I ordered my standard Pho Dac Biet with tendon, tripe, beef balls, flank and round eye steak and asked for the rare steak on the side. There was a slight misunderstanding over the rare steak but the polite staff corrected it quickly and it was no big deal. Condiments are fresh and it's nice to see the sauce containers very orderly and clean (vs. #54 spot). Plus they even have tiny bottles of Viet Huong fish sauce. It may not be Red Boat but usually I only see fish sauce available in San Jose's Little Saigon! Pho Dac Biet - $8.95. A very generous bowl for my small order arrived and the rare steak accompanied it. Broth was fairly hot and overall drinkable and solid. The rare steak was great quality with a fresh red color and cooked nicely, though a bit slowly as the broth wasn't piping hot. Beef balls, tripe, and tendon were all on point. At many places, they undercook the tendons, but they were tender here. I only saw thin vermicelli noodles but didn't ask about fresh wide noodles (it's Mountain View, so maybe I'm hoping too much). Overall, it was a enjoyable bowl of pho and quite filling, especially for a small size. Although they've just opened, word of mouth and a large Grand Opening sign seems to be working well with my lunch time visit feeling pretty busy. As for the competition, I'd say the closest are long-time, but inconsistent stalwart Pho Vi Hoa and perhaps Rengstorff Pho near Costco. Pho Avenue may not beat the very best from SJ (Pho Y1, Pho Cong Ly) but I'd give them the vote over the other two spots for the authentic touches (fish sauce, ingredients, flavor), friendly service, and generous serving size. Bugs were found in the pho broth. Around 5 bugs were found and when I pointed it out to one of the older male employees, he waived it off by saying that it was kitchen ingredients. I then took photos of the bugs and showed it to cashier who admitted that they were bugs but did not apologize. Being disgusted, I decided to leave the restaurant without finishing the meal (I ordered 2 pho) and the cashier demanded that I pay for the other pho since there no bugs in that broth... I was simply dumb-founded by how the employee did not seem to grasp that the presence of bugs is unacceptable. In any case, I have filed a complaint to the Santa Clara department of environmental health and I sincerely hope that they change their attitude towards basic sanitation. read more

I differed with respected yelper Randy F. about the former longtime tenant at this address (Pho Ngon) -- I didn't assess it so mediocre. Maybe because I often ordered non-Pho dishes there (Pho Ngon stood out for unusual bbq and stir-fry specialties), or didn't visit the place enough times for real assessment (contrast: I've now had 14 meals since last summer at the new-ownership Pho To Chau http://www.yelp.com/biz/pho-to-chau-mountain-view?hrid=O6X2B4LC5jzkIk2f4nDcLA ). This note reflects just one recent lunch so far at the latest tenant, Pho Avenue. That one lunch was very encouraging. While my companions ordered Pho and reported it above-average ("and they even use meatballs that aren't like rubber" -- wonders will never cease), on this first visit I tried a standard bún bowl with bbq shrimps and bbq pork over rice vermicelli with vegetable garnishes (menu item #29, "BUN TOM THIT NUONG" on check, $8.95) This was outstanding for its type locally -- comparable to the great version of a similar dish tried recently at Pho Wagon's Sunnyvale site. Specifically, the toppings were outstanding (the rice vermicelli were ordinary): grilled, marinated lean shaved pork slices, exquisite barbecued prawns. We were all fairly impressed. Must return several more times, get to know the menu, etc. Meanwhile a tentative 3 stars, with suspicion I'll increase them if the quality bears out with experience! Who knows what will happen later, as the San Antonio Center (the large block on whose corner Pho Avenue sits) continues redevelopment . The egg rolls and Pho Tai Nam Gau were both good. The Pho comes in a small or large portion. The large portion was very filling. I also had a strawberry lemonade which was homemade and perfect for a warm day. The prices are reasonable. The service was just OK. If you aren't too picky about good service and just want good food, this place is worth a try. They take Visa or Mastercard with a minimum spend. This location has always had a hard time with business despite being right by Whole Foods and a bunch of other retail places, but I really hope Pho Avenue does well. It's not a huge space, but it's very clean and is decorated nicely. The menu has the typical Vietnamese restaurant items like vermicelli and rice plates in addition to pho. The egg rolls were really good, and I like that there's an option of an order with only 2 egg rolls rather than a default order of 4 or 6. The pork filling had a lot of flavor. I got the pho ga (chicken pho), and the broth was very light and clean but not too salty. I didn't need to chug water like I usually do with MSG laden broth, and there was a TON of chicken breast in there - much more than other places. It was $7.95 for a small, which I couldn't even finish. Again, it's great that it's such a clean place (the sauce bottles weren't all sticky..) The menu has a good variety, and the prices are really reasonable. They take Visa or Mastercard if you spend over $9 (pay at the counter). A lot of people have some bad reaction and do not think twice about giving a restaurant a 2/5 review so consequently people do not take low reviews so seriously. I am writing this review after my first visit today and being disappointed. Honestly, I do not enjoy giving bad reviews, but most of the time if I do I feel it is a public service. I have to say that this is probably the worst Vietnamese Restaurant I have ever been to in terms of service and surroundings. The atmosphere is cramped, messy, dark and dingy. The tables are not as clean as they should have been. The staff is sitting out in the dining room slurping noodles staring at the customers. A real turn off. The food is actually mediocre, it is not terrible, but the prices of the food in this area is as much or more than other Vietnamese restaurants that actually do a much better job with cooking. So if you are going to spend the same money anyway, try somewhere else. The example I can use to show the business mentality of Pho Avenue is Vietnamese Coffee. In the late 1980's I was introduced to Vietnamese food and really enjoyed it, and one thing I enjoyed was the Vietnamese drip coffee. You got a little coffee filter perched atop a coffee mug with sweetened condensed milk. When the coffee filter drips out into the mug you empty it into a glass full of ice, and you are able to control the amount of sweetness and creaminess you want in your coffee. It is a delight, and anytime I've seen "Vietnamese Coffee" in a Vietnamese restaurant ( dozens of time ) it always means this coffee filter contraption. Try it, it's really great, but somewhere else because this is wrong! This restaurant advertises Vietnamese Coffee which I ordered. The came out with some terrible concoction already made that had an artificial taste to it that was detestable. When I complained they said that in the City of Mountain View drip coffee is illegal so they brew it themselves. To me this tasted like the cheap coffee you buy in $1.00 cans at the Asian markets. It was horrible and their explanation and service was horrible too. It had a chemical taste of a canned drink, and they lied right to my face saying it was fresh brewed behind the scenes. If these guys are going to mislead and not satisfy their customers over a simple cup of coffee what are they doing with the quality and freshness of their food? Another clue was the basil in my friend's Pho. When you go to a Vietnamese restaurant in this area virtually all of them serve Pho with a big plate of lime, basil, bean sprouts and peppers. The sprig of basil my friend got with her pho looked small and sickly. The soup itself was acceptable but mediocre Even though the dining area is completely visible from anywhere inside the restaurant I could not get the attention of anyone working to get another napkin. If Pho Avenue had decent prices it might be a good places for local working people to go for a quick bowl of Pho, but the prices are high, the ambience is unpleasant, the smell is not good, the service slow to non-existent, and the menu misleading - at least in some items. Customers should demand better, and we will certainly not be returning. I cannot recommend this place and in fact only can warn people away. Spare yourself the aggravation and find something else or go for a drive to San Jose. Many if not most Vietnamese places don't have the greatest of service, but their food is wonderful, try somewhere else. read more

sip. slurp. dip. repeat. Being a weekly regular for the last few months, I can say for certain that Pho Avenue has definitively replaced my need to go to Pho Vi Hoa. I will cry if I have to go back. The eye round steak and the chicken in their pho can sometimes be a little tough (overcooked), but the brisket is nearly always tender. The noodles are never mushy or clumpy, and the broth is mouthwatering even if you add none of the provided condiments and garnishes. And yes, their broth seems to be MSG-free! Other favorites include the spring rolls, fried eggrolls, and the a la carte chicken. The ambience is modern and creative. They've hidden the two other double doors with booths and provided a bit of privacy for the communal table from the entrance with several potted plants. The place is always clean, and the young owners take great pride in maintaining it. Service has been wonderfully attentive, with the exception of tonight*. *Tonight, however, I found a small fly in my Pho Ga (chicken pho). When I pointed it out to the middle-aged server, she insisted it was simply an herb. When I pointed out that it had wings, she fished the fly out with my ladle, which she took to the kitchen. She then returned in a huff for the bowl. It wasn't until she returned a few minutes later with a bowl (unknown if it was the same bowl), that she gave a curt apology. I have loved every visit prior to this incident, and will still give them the benefit of the doubt. That being said, I will be watching the surface of my pho like a hawk from here on out. 4 stars. THE GOOD: The people who run this place are excellent-- really good customer service. Friendly, attentive, considerate. Unfortunately, the food just did not measure up for me. I ordered my staple (bun vermicelli noodle bowl), and was disappointed by almost every element in it. The noodles were overcooked and stuck to itself in clumps and the beef was waaaay too salty and dry. I also wasn't expecting the marinated grilled beef to be rolled up and wrapping strips of onions. Not what I wanted. If my review were only based on this one dish, I would have only given 2 stars. Luckily, my husband's dish turned out to be much yummier than mine. The broth is oddly sweet, so that must mean they add sugar? Not a huge fan, but if I'm desperate for pho and need a fix, at least this place is close and clean. My favorite thing here is actually the shrimp and pork spring rolls. They're really fresh and the peanut sauce is as expected. I often come here just to get the spring rolls to go, get home and put them in ziplock and then in the fridge so I can bring to work for lunch the following day. This is a pretty small pho place but it seems family owned. The parking lot is pretty small and can get packed when it's busy so that's a tad annoying. The parking lot for the strip mall is also small, and we couldn't find a spot at dinner time so parked in the parking lot next door then walked the few steps over. If there is one thing that the Peninsula is missing, that would be a couple authentic and good Vietnamese restaurants. Vietnamese food is more than just pho. In fact, there are dishes like broken rice, bun bo hue, bun rieu and 7-course beef options that are not really offered in the area. That being said, I think Pho Avenue has been a great addition to pho restaurants in the Peninsula. For one thing, it's WAY better than Pho vi Hoa, located almost across the street. Pho Avenue has a more fragrant beef broth that is isn't adulterated using MSG. Moreover, they have fresher ingredients, especially better beef. I appreciate that they leave the raw beef slices for you to add to your hot broth. It tastes a lot more tender than those that have been sitting in the broth for awhile. I also like there is a slight sweetness to their soups. Overall their pho broth tastes more well rounded, similar to the broth at Pho to Chau (downtown Mountain View). I also like their vermicelli bowls. Their meat is more tender and cut up for you. The prawns are also seasoned well. Also better than the ones served at Pho vi Hoa, which serves more meat with vermicelli but are also so tough that I don't want to eat it. There are also a few other Vietnamese dishes here that aren't found elsewhere. If you haven't tried it, their chicken curry is also interesting. If you haven't been yet, I recommend trying Pho Avenue for getting your pho fix in the future. read more

It was super cold this week so I came in for lunch by myself on a weekday. I'm glad I came right around 12, because by 12:10 or so there was quite a wait at the door. I ordered a small pho with well done brisket and steak. It was more than enough food! The meat was plentiful and the soup had a different type of kick to it in comparison to other pho spots. Keep in mind that you have to go to the cashier to pay so don't sit around waiting for a check. Overall it was pretty good and the service was nice. I came here on a Saturday night for dinner with my roommate because we wanted to try a new pho place in the area and Pho Avenue did not disappoint! I got the large pho tai and it was pretty good. Some of the other comments mentioned a strong cinnamon taste which made me nervous at first, but I didn't get that taste at all. The broth was flavorful and the serving size was generous. My roommate got the vegetarian pho and he thought the tofu was very well done because at other pho places they tend to over fry the tofu causing it to be very thick and dry on the inside. The servers were polite and efficient and it didn't take more than 15 minutes for our food to come out even though the restaurant looked packed. The restaurant was a bit cramped and the bathroom didn't look super clean (although I didn't go inside), but then again I feel like that's the typical atmosphere for most authentic Viet restaurants. Very prompt and friendly service, delicious pho, fresh veggies, what more can you ask for. The broth was perfect, I didn't detect mag (I usually get a huge headache if I have any), and the accept cards with a minimum purchase of $8. The only thing this place needs is ngo gai. It's an herb that absolute completes pho but most restaurants don't have... my bf was as happy as could be though! read more

I had the number 37, vermicelli bowl with grilled beef and an eggroll. On arrival, there were only 4 beef rolls and one egg roll. The beef was rolled up and had onions inside and they were really salty. Forced myself to eat them cause I was hungry. The egg roll was good. he the egg roll skin was really thick. The bowl was medium sized so I was still hungry. TLDR, small, salty, and overpriced food. 9 bucks. read more

Nothing compares to a bowl of hot hearty noodle soup when it comes to Asian food. Having been constantly seeking for a good pho place, a friend recommended this little shop to me. Noodle is surprisingly good - they even have raw beef to put into hot boiling soup as I had in China. There are not many good Vietnamese restaurants in Mountain View but Pho Avenue is definitely one of the better ones!The food is delicious, prices are reasonable, interior is modern and clean (nice real wooden tables), and the owners are always super welcoming! My boyfriend and I have been going here at least once a week since their grand opening. We've tried almost everything from their pho, appetizers, rice plates, curry, to their beef stew and they all taste delicious! It's never too busy so we've always been seated right away and food comes out quickly. There's still a few kinks they can work on like not forgetting our appetizer or the greens for our pho.
