I've been ranting to all my neighbors as friends for the past month or so since I saw the Coming Soon sign, because I couldn't wait to try Pho Benny! I was and still am excited that Lafayette has its own Phó restaurant. We frequented the previous establishment and one of my husband's favorite things was to go in for a pint and watch a game...pre covid, so I hope he'll be able to do this again soon! Anyway, back to why you're here....the food. We ordered 2 bahn mi sandwiches to go (1 chicken, 1 pork) When we opened them up the bread still had that nice crust. Crunch on the outside, pillowy soft bread on the inside. Traditionally, I'm used to a thin layer of pate spread which this did not have and I missed it. The sandwiches were overall decent and I wasn't hungry after but I will say the fillings were a bit on the light side compared to other bahn mi shops, especially in San Jose, especially for the price. But that may just be the price of having options in Lafayette. Usually we go to Walnut Creek for phó but with Pho Benny right downtown, it's hard not to say I'll be back. I am a HUGE fan of Banh-mi. I have tried pretty much every single restaurant on the East Bay that has it on their menu and many places in SF. Hands down my favorite!! We have been talking about trying out this place. We live in Moraga and frequent at Trader Joe's. Yesterday we decided to try it for early dinner before shopping at Trader Joe's. As what we expect, the food is not bad. Quite comparable with other regular Pho places from taste point of view. We ordered #1 (pho) and the vermicelli (bun) and has no problem with the food. The issue that they have is portion and price. Their portion is probably 25% less with price that's 50% more compared to what you would get from comparable places at Walnut Creek or Concord. The egg roll in the dish was so crunchy and delicious, I wish I had ordered it as an appetizer so I had more. A one and done for my family and me. I was already weary when I asked for hot tea and they gave me what I'm pretty sure was a caffeine free Stash raspberry hibiscus tea. The menu does not have different bowl sizes like other Vietnamese establishments do, and it's much pricier than other Vietnamese restaurants. The pho itself was very disappointing. While the broth was good and flavorful, it was also very salty, maybe reduced too much. The noodles were thick and mushy as if it had been soaking too long. And there was hardly any meat. I was supposed to have tendon and actually had to ask for it because I couldn't find any in the bowl. They're very stingy on vegetables too. Both my husband and I ordered one bowl each and we had to ask for more vegetables. My son had a chicken and rice plate. The chicken was a little too sweet for me. The eggroll that came with it had potential, but it was very oily and the wrapper inside was not fully cooked. But I did appreciate that they gave him and other kids juice boxes.
