I live really near pho don, and it's always my go-to place for pho. Especially since they're open till 2am, it's probably my favourite late night pho place. The food is really good here and the customer service is really good. The restaurant is located not far from the PNE, so during summer when PNE is open it can get quite busy in here. It can get a little busy during dinner time, but out of all the times I've gone here I usually get seated down right away. My favourite dish on the menu from here is the seafood fried noodles, it is amazing! Another favourite is the Lemongrass Chicken w/ rice. I usually order this with a fried egg over top of the rice..... sooooo good! They also serve calamari that is also really good. My mom really likes the fried wonton that they have for an appetizer. Wow, looks like I'm converted! If you asked me a year and a half ago if I'd recommend this place, I'd say meh. But Pho Don seems to have improved their broth recipe! It has much more beef flavour and depth now unlike before when the broth was much more flat-tasting, more like a 3 star pho. And!!! If you're a beef tendon fan like me, this place gives you several HUGE chunks of tendon, all cooked to the perfect tenderness. The only reason I wouldn't give 5 stars is I feel their other menu items are lacking. Definitely would not recommend their spring rolls; it's more of a Chinese style w/ the wrapper and the filling is lacking. It's the 6th pho place to open in the neighbourhood, but we decided to check it out. The former Gourmet Castle could not be recognized, the interior looked much newer and modern which gave us a good first impression. We were seated and given menus and tea right away, plus again! However there were only two waitresses who were nowhere to be seen after that, so it took a while for us to order. I ordered my usual rare beef and beef ball pho. The portion was decent, but the beef balls had this chemically taste... I couldn't eat anymore. We told the waitress and she pretty much shrugged it off. There went her tip! Knowing that my hunger was starting to attack, I needed some Pho to tame my hunger. I got to Pho Don after volunteering at Empire Field and was basically ready to eat. I ordered their House Special and it did cost $9.45. Here is what the results are. The meat to noodle ratio was 50/50. Half the meal was noodles and half was meat. There was definitely big chunks of meat and I was surprised to see they would still offer such a huge portion of meat to the bowl. The broth was somewhat light, but it had flavour for sure. I was very pleased they offered more bean sprouts then most places. I wish they did offer bigger lime pieces because I felt 1 small lime was not good enough to balance the beef flavour. I have never had the pho here so my review is based on other items. The bahn mi is terrible. The bread gets soggy and the meat is greasy. They add a sauce as well that takes away from the sandwich. The flavors don't mesh well at all. I even tried it a 2nd time and it was the same result. The crispy wontons and salad rolls are decent. Not a place to try the traditional Bun Bo Hue, nor to try the novelty Spicy Pho creation. The BBH did not come with any traditional herbs and veggies, which was already a suspect. The Spicy Pho tries to be a Tom Yum hybrid but failed miserably. Despite the waitress' polite "they are all good" when asked which dishes are best here, those two bowls were bland to taste, and did not satisfy your craving for pungent, flavorful, fine Vietnamese cuisine. The best we could do was to eat what's there so to fill our stomach. Still palatable which earns it a 2 star instead of 1. And please, when a customer asks for extra bowls, make it a higher priority to deliver them . If the customer had to ask 2 times, then get up on a 3rd time to go get those dining ware from you then it spoils the experience. Tend to customers' requests before cleaning other tables should be a priority in good customer service. Therefore the rating went from 2 stars to 1. We hope other customers had better experiences and that our experience was more rare than common. read more

I WILL NEVER GO BACK TO THIS PLACE AGAIN. I urge that anyone who is vegetarian or pescatarian do the same. Last time I came to this place, I asked if there was chicken or beef used in their soup bases. As I do not eat animal meat, this is something that was very important for me to know. Specifically, I asked if their seafood noodles were purely seafood. They told me that their fishcake noodles had chicken in the broth but their sweet and sour seafood noodles were purely seafood. I believed them. I decided to go here again tonight. Out of a whim, I asked my server (a different girl) if there was meat in the soup base. Despite some major communication issues (she wasn't sure if beef was meat?) she confirmed that there was chicken in the soup. Which meant the last server was totally LYING to my face. She evidently knew there was meat used in the soup but chose to BS me another story. Shame on you. I will never, ever return to this disgusting establishment. read more

Dropped by near midnight today to grab a quick bite because no other decent places were open at this hour near our neighborhood. Hubs and I got the Deep Fried Chicken with Noodles and the Bun Bo Hue. Pho Don is certainly more crowded at night than at day when we went last time! It wasn't really different regarding the service and such, so no comment there. However, as for the food... Deep Fried Chicken: hubs got it last time with vermicelli. This time he decided to get the fried noodles which were originally offered. Good if you want more flavor! I preferred the vermicelli but he liked the oiliness that came with the noodles. The melt in your mouth quality of the chicken though, was as good as ever. Bun Bo Hue: not exceptional. The broth wasn't very spicy and more importantly, it lacked the pig blood that is a characteristic of the noodles. Less authentic than the ones that I had in other Vietnamese restaurants in Vancouver, but considering that the clientele of Pho Don appears to be mostly Caucasian as opposed to Viets/other Asians, it makes sense. However, points for not adding too much msg in the broth, which made it so I did not have to drink excessive amounts of water later. Overall 3/5, average. Again, Pho Don is really just for those late nights where you are kinda hungry and there's no really better options locally. Otherwise I would try Le Do or Le Petit Saigon nearby. read more

I decided to give this restaurant a try. First thing I noticed was the nice decor and cleanliness of the restaurant. The place was very clean! I ordered a small house special and spring rolls. The food took almost 30 minutes to arrive! I found that borderline unacceptable as most ingredients are made in advance. The spring roll was made with Chinese spring roll wrappers and stuffed mostly with pork. There were bits of glass noodles and some vegetables. The pho had a decent amount of noodles and toppings. Broth was light but I found the broth not as flavourful as other restaurants. Service was minimal. I was seated, got my water, placed order and received food. It was 8:30 pm and the restaurant was not a quarter full. This is a good late night option. However, the wait time for food was very disappointing that I do not think I will return anytime soon. read more

Decent late night eats for this part of Vancouver (there aren't many other choices that are cheap and open late). I had the fish cake pho, husband had the beef balls and beef pho. We also had a salad roll and a Vietnamese iced coffee. Everything was tasty albeit the service and food is a bit slow. I've been here twice now and both experiences weren't great. Today's was rough. The server brought us tea promptly and our meals came quickly, but we never saw her again - we finally had to go up to the counter to ask for our bill. The lids on the sauces were gummy - they definitely hadn't been cleaned in a while. The jar of chili sauce on the table was empty. The bathroom was grim: clogged toilet full of poop; clogged sink; toilet paper all over the floor; garbage can overflowing. Guaranteed no one cleaned that bathroom after closing yesterday. I shudder to think of how clean the kitchen is if this is how they keep the front of house. The pho tastes pretty good, but due to the service and level of cleanliness I won't be back. read more

Other than the fact that my dad pronounced it as "poo dong", everything about this place is good. :) I had low expectations because the area looked kind of empty and stuff but I went there late (not many people eat at 8 I think). I didn't know what to get so they suggested the house special. The small size is like a large at most places (that I've been to). The serving amount is really generous. The beef blobs were really good and tasted like real beef, unlike the erasers they call meat at food courts. The noodles are yummy and not too soggy or too hard. I ate it really fast so it was all a blur but it's the best pho I have had. I was really really hungry though so maybe that's a little biased. This pho place opened yesterday right near my house. I'm not sure we needed another Vietnamese restaurant in this neighbourhood (there are already several and yet another one is opening soon a few blocks from here)... But I guess I shouldn't complain about good affordable food. Anyways, 4 stars for this one, Pho Don. It's brand new and they did a complete reno on the interior, so every trace of the old Chinese place that was here is now gone. I especially like the stonework on the walls and columns. All of the plates and utensils are brand new, so take advantage of this while you can (you know how dishes can get after a few years in these kinds of restaurants). Also, they use real chopsticks, not the disposable kind, which is a plus. The menu has the usual 20 varieties of Vietnamese soup, with a couple of variations that I don't usually see elsewhere (like spicy Hue style soup, which is what we had). They also do Viet baguette sandwiches, which not all places have on the menu. I got one to go - it tasted great, but it wasn't as full of stuff as I would have liked. The menu is also notable for having a big selection of generic Asian dishes (fried noodles, fried rice, some curries, BBQ duck, etc), not just the standard grilled pork and rice or noodles that you usually see. Lastly, the price is right. Pho, baguettes, and appetizers are about the same price as everywhere else. Nearly all of the main courses except for seafood are under $9. We didn't try any of these, but I'm sure I'll be back to try some another time. Oh yeah and they have bubble tea, which I think means they are the only place that serves it in this neighbourhood. Love this place. My go to pho place not only when I'm sober but when I'm drunk as well... ^___^ First of all I love how clean pho don is. It's quite spacey and never messy or dirty. Secondly, the menu covers all your basic pho needs and much much more. The food here is always good. Nothing amazing but I do enjoy my meals and every time I visit I leave happy. Consistency is really important for me and this place passes the test with no problems at all. The service is also quite good. They are very accommodating both when I'm drunk and sober... In SF there are many artists, there is Northern Pho and Southern Pho, I am partial to the Southern. I have been lucky enough in SF to have found some of the best Pho in the city! For super cheap. I am once again moving to Vancouver and I have to say that Pho Don has Given me hope that I have not come to a waste land of disappointing Pho! ( as my recent experiences have been). This place is a hidden gem, we came in around 11:30pm as it was one of the only places open at that time and was super pleased with our orders. We ordered the house special pho and the rare beef + beef brisket pho. Both were great, with very hearty meat portions. We came back again for a 2nd time and tried out the rare beef in spicy peanut sauce, which was also really great but be aware that it is indeed quite spicy. At first I thought this place isn't too bad for late night food as it's pretty close to the area I live. Clean, and the gentleman who normally works there is pretty nice. The food is a little on the bland side, but I'm ok with that. The pho has a bit much of noodles for the ratio of soup they put in. Their lemongrass chicken on rice (I got noodles instead, it was bland and it taste like those fast food Chinese places) Although, I wanted to input this mostly about last night I went in at 1:35am knowing they're closed at 2am. Pho usually comes out pretty quick, eat quickly then leave. The lady whose probably in her 20's didn't make it feel welcoming at all. She said rudely, "are you going to be out right at 2am?" and literally as we sat down trying to make a decision. A minute to two later she comes over and says "ready?" And I said "No, I think we need just one more minute". A different gentleman that I haven't seen who was counting cash sounded like he was making it very obvious as if they didn't want anyone else in there. I understand you want to go home, but don't be rude if it's not even 2am yet. Otherwise, don't close at 2am!! Orrr even mention that you guys are only doing take out at that point. Nice chairs too here, and fairly new decor, but the washroom could use up sprucing up. anyways, ordered the sub sandwich, bread wasn't the typical, almost too soft and not toasty---in fact, it didn't close properly, but with the generous portion of cut up carrots & lettuce, and just a tad too much of its house sauce, if you can even call it; more like a salad dressing lol. Service at lunch was prompt, though I needed to go up to the till to get my bill. The pho tasted like any other well made bowl of pho. The flavours weren't nuanced or refined, but they did not leave me with a much-too-salty aftertaste either. And a well made bowl of pho is always worth four stars on a rainy day. However, their fresh fruit smoothie menu surprised me. I ordered the mango smoothie, and it had tiny mango chunks in there, which means they used real fruit. This is my go to pho joint! I love the taste of their broth, it more flavourful than other restaurants in my opinion. Their late hours make it easier for me to stop by after work - food comes out super quick! There is ample seating and the restaurant is relatively new and clean.
