Pho is a soup unique to each families recipes? Pho Lan is a wonderfully kitschy family restaurant. The menu is traditional and everything is excellent! Generally you are served quickly. The tea served at seating is sublime. One of my favorites is 33, rice noodles and barbecue pork with a prawn skuer side. Pho with rare beef and beef balls is a must try. Very solid albeit pretty standard pho joint with a bunch of vegetarian items, including a vegetarian (vegan) pho. I stopped in for a quick lunch after having learned they have veggie options. They have a veggie pho that comes in a choice of 3 sizes, so I ordered the medium one ($17 plus tax). The soup came out in about 10 minutes, with plenty of veggies (broccoli, cauliflower, green cabbage, carrot), deep fried tofu, and a nice portion of well-cooked vermicelli. The broth was nicely salty and flavourful, not too oily, and amped up nicely by their homemade chili oil. Nothing really stood out about this veggie pho, but it was fairly tasty and satisfying. Small Vietnamese restaurant on the corner of Granville and No. 3. The first time I've been to this place was ~25 years ago, and it still looks exactly the same on the inside today. Very dated and traditional decor. Went on a weekday for lunch and the place was about 1/3 to 1/2 full. Small menu with a selection of Vietnamese appetizers, pho, vermicelli and rice. Got a large serving of their signature pho. Comes in a very large bowl, with thin sliced beef, brisket, beef balls, tripe. Good soup base, pretty good amount of meat and a lot of pho. Also got the combo platter with 2 shrimp salad rolls, lemongrass chicken and shrimp pie. The shrimp pie has shrimp on the top, and a meat filling on the inside. Comes with a sliced carrot and cucumber salad and vermicelli. Very big portions, and tasted decent. Couldn't finish the platter and took some home. Total was $38, so still a very inexpensive place to get big portions of Vietnamese food. They only take cash and email transfer for payment. With the small business buildings on No. 3 being gradually turned into condos, don't know how long this place will remain. read more

I came here for dinner recently. The restaurant feels like it's one that can be found in Asia. Service was good and food came fairly quick. In terms of food, I tried their Pho Lan Special Beef Noodle Soup. The noodles were done really well, the broth was good with a bit of pepper, and there was a nice variety and cuts of meat in the pho. This was the first time I had something other than Chinese food in Richmond and it didn't disappoint. The food was so good that everyone in my group stopped talking just to eat. The bun bo hue had a whole pork hock in it, which I absolutely loved. It could have been more spicy, but I just added chili oil and hot sauce to make up for it. I have been looking for authentic deep fried Vietnamese spring roll, like not just crispy but also sticky. This restaurant definitely has the food I want! My boyfriend brought me there and he told me that this restaurant has been there since he was still in high school, which was like over 20 years ago.. lol He hasn't been there for quite a while since he no longer lived in Richmond. He told me that there must be a reason why the restaurant is still running and I can prove that it's really true! First, we ordered a large size of pho with rare beef and tendon, and also 2 orders of deep fried spring roll. For pho, we specifically asked for the beef on the side because we wanted to see how fresh the beef was. Satisfactorily, the beef was freshly red and that is good enough for us to go back in the near future again! The broth was really delicious and not much MSG (at least we were not so thirty after we finished it). Second, the deep fried spring roll was EXACTLY what I want!! It was really hot so I believed that they deep fried it once we ordered. It was not only crispy but also sticky, and this is how a Vietnamese spring roll should be. I couldn't even stop eating that and I even wanted to order more.. haha! The prices were really reasonable. With everything that's going on these days there aren't a lot of decent ethnic food choices. Pho Lan is one of the remaining Asian restaurants still open (for take out). Family run for years and always consistent - support them if you can. Pho Lan is almost an institution in Richmond. I have been coming here for well over 20 years. To be honest I'm not sure why I haven't written a review until now. They are the most "authentic" and "old school" pho shops in the area. It could also possibly be the oldest. This is the real story of August 8th 2023 evening 7:10PM, I almost got beaten up by the restaurant server(he is probably related to the restaurant owner family). The server who tried to hit me is the pony tail Asian guy with round glass. So I went to this restaurant several times, on August 8th I tried to go there for my dinner. When I sat down, the server put me on one table. Then served the noodle. As I just started enjoying my noodle, he suddenly told me to move by just saying 'move'. Without my consent since I was eating and could not perform any action, he grabbed my bag from my seat and the water glass and tried to put them to another table, how rude this is? I was full of anger, I told him "what the f*** are you doing?", and the server put my bag back, and then he cursed me with some foreign languages, and he also swing his elbow near my face to try to hit me. And I told him "what are you f***ing doing, I am calling the police". And he got pushed away by the old Asian lady cashier, as I was about to leave and I tried to confront him as he was very aggressive, he suddenly tried to grab a wooden big chair to throw that at me. He was pushed away again by the old Asian cashier lady. But imagine he did not get stopped, there were two little babies who are only 2-3 years old eating near my table, if he threw the chair, the babies would definitely get hurt. I think the restaurant food is okay, but I will never recommend it to anyone since they try to physically hurt their customer. And even you are just a bystander, your kids could still get hurt in this restaurant as I mentioned above. Also I called police later and they went to the restaurant to check on the server, and police told me the server and cashier do not really speak English. So the guy does not speak English, does not have manners, before he realized what I was even meaning, he tried to hurt me. read more

I've heard many good things from friends and read a lot of positive reviews about this place but never been here as it is really out of my way. Give you a sense of how far out of my way it is. This is 16km away from me, my usual spot when wanting to eat Vietnamese food is 3km away. Driving back from Tsawwassen Mills and passing through Richmond, I thought I should give this place a try. Came here for dinner around 6pm. Parked in the back of restaurant, easy enough. Came in from the back and went to the dining area, encountered the hostess and she lead us to an available table. Me and my daughter ordered the Lemongrass chicken on rice dish. Wasn't a very long wait at all when our food arrived at our table. Looked good, nice size portions of chicken, a generous size portion of rice and some side of veggies. The flavour of the chicken was really good comparing to where I normally go so I said to myself, I would come back to try the pho the next time. The following week I decided to make the trek out here to try the pho. Ordered the extra large size and that is what I got. Wow! Some places you order the large size and they give you the big bowl with lots of soup but the same amount of noodle as a medium and after finishing it you still are hungry, not this place, the extra large is of epic proportions. I found myself having to force myself to finish this, in a good way though. I was very full after eating this. Great portion, great flavour. Staff is very friendly, safety measures are in full practice. I've gone back again. Total of 3 times in the past 3 weeks. Don't mind making the drive when the food taste this good, portions are very generous for what you are paying and the staff is very nice. A lot of businesses are hurting due to Covid and I would like to see this place thrive so I can highly recommend this place like all the other positive reviews before me has. This will be my go to place when I want to eat Vietnamese food from now on. read more

I have tried 2 Vietnamese food in Vancouver and all taste not as expect. I love Vietnamese food in past 5 years in Singapore and 2 times in Vietnam . But this shop really taste not right .... Sorry to say that . I just want to say you still have space to improve the taste . The vegitable looks/ taste like over cooked / not fresh . The oil is too much in the soup of the rice noodle , fresh spring roll is the only thing I feel ok, one star give to the good customer service of the guy waiter, one star for the spring roll . read more

First meal of 2019: a big, warm, filling bowl of pho and deep fried spring rolls. Pho Lan was one of the only restaurants open on New Years Day, so my pals and I headed here to get some recovery grub post-NYE celebrations. This spot is a bit of a hole in the wall across from the Richmond City Hall, but sometimes it's the hole in the wall spots that serve up some of the best food. I enjoyed a bowl of their #7: Chef's Special w/ all the toppings and their #4: Deep Fried Spring Rolls. The bowl of pho hit the spot perfectly - it was flavourful, satisfying, and (almost, just almost) took my hangover away. I also had a lovely Vietnamese coffee. Pro tip: stir the coffee and syrup mixture before you pour it over the ice. Parking is a bit of a gong show here, but that's just Richmond for you. There is a parking lot in the back, but it's shared with a bunch of the other restaurants close by. There is also paid parking along the side streets. Note that this spot is CASH ONLY and no ATM, so make sure you're prepared before coming in. read more

Was looking for a Vietnamese place in Richmond and had been going to Thai Son for years. Hopped on Yelp and found Pho Lan near the top of the list in Richmond. I ordered the Vermicelli Salad with Lemongrass Chicken and Vietnamese Spring Roll. They use the authentic Vietnamese spring roll rap and the chicken was very tasty. The vegetables tasted fresh and the entire dish was tied together very well by the fish sauce. The waiter we had was a little rough around the edges but seemed to cheer up when I used my limited Vietnamese to request an item. In short, the food is really good, and authentic, though the staff could be friendlier. This has become my new go-to place for Vietnamese cuisine in Richmond. read more

We have heard and read many great things about Pho Lan's spring rolls, so we ventured out to Richmond and gave it a try. We were quickly seated even though it was super busy, we ordered the spring rolls and two bowls of noodles with your classic cuts of meat. As many have said already, spring rolls are delicious, super crunchy and full of flavour. As good as they were, we enjoyed the broth just as much. The broth is delicious, it's very clear compared to most Pho joints, and does not taste like it's full of MSG. The meat and noodles were pretty standard, but it's the broth that makes the pho here amazing. If you haven't been already, order a bowl of noodles and the spring rolls, you won't regret it. I came, I ate, and now I can write about this joint. As many have said this place has been around for awhile, practically a staple for pho for the Richmond folk, and it seems like this place has not changed in decor over time as walking in here it does feel a little old. The lighting, let alone the color of the furniture in here makes it feel like a 'hole-in-the-wall' which is always a welcome sight to me, as usually all the effort is in the food product coming out that has kept these places alive. Coming back here I had to see if things have changed in terms of perspective, and now I can finally throw my 2 cents in. I remember coming here and this place used to be packed, used to be, maybe it was a Wednesday night, or maybe they have been affected by the recent moving of Pho An Nam that is literally just down the block from them now. I came with a friend as it was his suggestion, and he told me while we were walking in that his son doesn't like to come here cause it smells like an old furniture store. This place definitely needs a facelift, like a true renovation to if not get rid of the smell of old furniture, to really brighten this place up. There is no tv here, so no sports for you, and it's cash only, talk about barebones restaurant. We both decided on the Pho Lan special pho (no.7 if you must know) on the menu, and order of pork spring roll, and a shrimp salad roll. The first thing that came was the shrimp salad roll, which was very plump and big in size (as the order on the menu is per roll). It came with their house peanut sauce and cut up for easy sharing, if your not that hungry, really one roll is pretty big, buyer beware! Next up was the spring roll, originally, based on presentation alone, I think they need to clean the oil, as these things looked dark, one side burst out a little due to breakage of the wrapping. I can say after eating the fried spring roll, this sucker was evil good, something very meaty and tasty... and did I say.... it's FRIED! Then came the bowl of pho.. the main star. Before I go on about the pho I will say this... this is the first place where I have ever seen a S, M, and L size, aren't there usually only 2 sizes? It's not the cheapest either, as it starts at $7 and goes $8 then $9, and you charge tax, and you are cash only... hmmm. I ordered a medium, and it eventually came, with a big dish of bean sprouts, a lime wedge, then a lemon wedge (what happened, they run out of the green fruit?). I can say that they don't cheap you out on the meat, as when I was almost done the noodles there was still lot's of meat floating around in the ocean bowl! The description is no lie, rare steak, well done flank, tendon (big piece at that), tripe, and a good few pieces of beef meatball. I now have a thing where I try the broth before poisoning it with bean sprouts, lime squeeze and dosing Sriracha sauce on it, and it didn't have that sweetness that some others had, a little on the oily side, nothing too special, till after I ate this whole bowl. The noodles were cooked pretty good, not al dente, but very close to it. While getting to the end of the bowl is where I starting to drink lots of tea, and realized this thing was laced with MSG, the one where it gives you the mild hangover headache which I really wasn't asking for. This place definitely has it's followings as they I see they acknowledge returning customers, as I noticed one guy walking in, and the server and person from the kitchen came out to greet him and saying, "you have returned!" But with all the competition of pho places in Richmond this place has been affected by change and not being able to change with the times. Parking in the back of the place, located right across from city hall, it just feels a little bit more costly for what this place is. read more

Came here 2 nights ago for a late dinner. They were closing at 10pm so thankfully they still served us at 940pm. Ordered the rare steak pho. Came within 5 minutes and the beef and broth were both delicious. They also serve limes. I wouldn't say they are known for their service but it doesn't matter much when the food comes out quickly. In addition to their drinks and desserts, they have around 40 items on their menu with an average price between $7 and $9. Service is fast and efficient so if you are in a rush you're in luck. All the utensils like the chopsticks, condiment dishes, and spoons were laid out on every table for every customer to touch, sneeze on, cough on, and you name it. Service remains unfriendly with a scowl like they're doing you a favor by serving you. The elderly female owner perched at the corner who's in charge of handling all the cash transactions doesn't even wear a mask. And the other two employees, male and female, wear their masks pulled underneath his nose and the other server wears hers tucked underneath her chin. Great protocol guys. One of my fav places for pho in Richmond! Their spring rolls are really different from other places and super yummy! I've always gotten their regular beef pho but noticed the last time I was there, the beef didn't seem that fresh. My friend noticed it as well, and the two of us couldn't even finish half of our small bowls. It was disappointing but may have just been an off day! It's a sad day. I've been going here for 10+ years and I hate to admit it but the quality has slipped over the last couple years. Within the last year they bumped up their prices, decreased portion sizes and removed "have a nice day" from their menu. Their pho isn't quite the same anymore. When I tried it the other the soup was luke warm, a bit bland, and their meat slices were sub par compared to other quality pho joints. I'm really surprised no one has reviewed this restaurant before since I've driven by it and heard good things about it for years. I went today for lunch, my first time here. The menu is simple but covers all the basics (a selection of appies, pho, dry noodle bowls, chicken and pork on rice, combos, ice plates with fruit for dessert, vietnamese coffee...) . Pho comes in three sizes. I ordered a small raw beef and beef balls ($5.50). There was a good portion size of meat unlike some places you go to where its just a giant bowl of noodles and 5 slices of beef. I think I almost had some meat with every spoonful of noodle- even with my hearty appetite, I was pleasantly surprised to be full at the end. The soup was hot and flavourful- the true test for me is I didn't leave with that the dreaded pho-after taste in my mouth. My friend had the spring roll ($2.50) which was pretty large and a coffee. It looked a bit over-fried to me, but she said it's one of her favourites and other people have told me how good their spring rolls are. I'm giving Pho Lan 3 stars for now, until I go back a try a few other things. Worth a try if you're in the area and need to grab a cheap meal. read more

Mmmm i have enjoyed going to Pho Lan since highschool but since i have started grad school i havent been back. During this visit home my boyfroend suggedted it for my first meal back. I happily agreed! We got the special pho and sping rolls. The pho medoum size was satisfyingly big and the spring rolls were crispy and stuffed full of tasty filling. Never mind about ambiance or service. The place is decently clean and service is polite and brisk. Top that off with a huge tasty lunch for under ten bucks a person and i think you've got a pretty good deal! The place can get a liitle packed on weekdays because of all the surrounding offices, so come early or late if you don't want to wait for a seat. read more
