Surprisingly great Banh Mi here at one of the lowest prices around now. At only $6.25, the Lemongrass chicken banh mi had plenty of lemongrass chicken (not too flavourful) which was a little tough but not filled with fat like some other ive tried. They don't use pate but theres a nice smear of mayo and they pack it quite full with pickled veggies! The bread is also crispy and nicely toasted. Overall, I really love banh mi and I'm not hard to please. Just dont have bread that hurts my mouth and don't skimp on the filling. This place fills those criteria! read more

Tried this place through Foodora. They had 50% off on a few dishes and decided to try it out. Had the lemon grass chicken and it's pretty good. I'd order this again. The spring rolls are thin- more like Chinese spring rolls. The prices are standard. Service is ok but a little slow for take out orders. Glad I found this place. Parking out front is pay parking but that's all of Fraser St which is a shame. read more

Gia Minh took over the same spot of Moon café and same interior as before. Gia means home, it more likes family run business. I used to go Gia Minh monthly when they're newly open. I would say their BBH was great and it served with a bit purple cabbage on it. It tasted quite spicy and a bit at salty side. I liked the beef and beef balls noodles too. Beef balls were quite bouncy and beef broth pretty tasty. I suspected the ownership or chef changed, therefore, the food and taste gone down a lot. Sadly.... However server didn't ask the size and thought she'll ask us like most places do.Didn't like how server blamed us for not mentioning the size and we got large instead of small. She didn't ask what size we wanted. Spring rolls were crispy and yummy. I really enjoyed the food here. #13(rare beef, tendon and tripe) was good just that I like tendon more tender in texture. So it looks like Moon Cafe has died and reincarnated into this establishment. The giveaway was the giant clock on the back wall. Parking is plentiful behind the row of buildings. One of the great things about this Fraser area. The inside is just classy as in the previous life. Looks like the owners didn't renovate much, which is not a bad thing in this case. Staff were friendly, but weren't too attentive. One of them was playing on her phone the whole time we were here and barely looked up. The food here is not the typical run of the mill (ie Pho Hoa) type. They put extra care into the cooking and ingredients, and the taste speaks for itself. I had the Bun Bo Hue, and it came with plenty of toppings such as green onions and cabbage. Nice light soup, that had some heat but wasn't overwhelming. Special mention. My buddy had the seafood noodle soup and it was also quite delicious. I will definitely be back. Recommended. read more

Amazing Banh Mi and Pho. I am always impressed by the flavors, quality and service. My go to Banh Mi place. The grilled lemongrass chicken vermicelli is also excellent! Delicious and fresh! The place is spotless. The pho is outstanding! I tried a chicken Banh mi at another place today and I was so disappointed. No cilantro and chicken was flat. There wasn't that lemongrass flavor. My friend WL gave me a call on Friday morning to see if I had time for lunch. Well it's a Friday so of course I have time! Haha! He suggested we meet at the proverbial Deer Garden on Fraser Street... I'm sure you can hear me whine once I heard the words Deer Garden....oh... Not that place again.... I'm sick of it!... I made him pick something else. He said he has gone to a Vietnamese place that was on Fraser that was pretty good... Gia Minh... Hmmm.... Gia Minh isn't too bad... Once you walk in the most striking feature is the cleanliness of this place. Gia Minh is one of the cleanest Vietnamese restaurants that I've been to in Vancouver. At the end of the meal I ventured to the men's room and again... Pretty Darn clean! Ok so it's clean what about the food... hmmmm..... Well I would say it's about average. Nothing exceptional, but I would venture to say that the price is a bit on the high side. Not exceptionally high but just a touch on the high side. I had their special meat soup... It was ok... I'll have to come back and try some of their other offerings to really get a good gauge on this place. Well clarified with a smooth mouthfeel (read, good amount of fat, but not too heavy for the broth). Next time: Order my rare beef on the side. Very fat service here; I always for some reason drink Pho on cloudy days. It always uplifts my mood. Don't add the fish sauce because that's very very very salty. I added to my spoon and spit it out to the plate. The washroom isn't the best btw so if you have to pee or go number two; do it somewhere else. read more

Gia Minh is located at what used to be Moon Cafe on Fraser so it inherited the decor which is great b/c that was renovated not too long ago. The resto is clean, the staff is very friendly and service was prompt. Overall, the food didn't disappoint and I prefer Gia Minh over Pho Hong which is a few blocks down. The special beef noodle (#9) had a great variety of toppings. The BBQ chicken vermicelli (specialty dry noodle, #32) packed in some flavour. The shrimp salad roll (#2) probably would be better off with less vermicelli filling. But most important: it passed the MSG test so I wasn't dying of thirst after the meal. There are four vegan items are on the menu: vegan spring rolls, vegan salad rolls, vegan pho, and vegan sub. The salad rolls are wrapped around a mildly salty tofu/tempeh. These rolls are tender and fiberous as a filling appetizer. It is served with peanut sauce for more delicious flavour. The peanut sauce is a love or hate accoutrement. It is supplanting the tempeh flavour, and I'm not able to taste tempeh. This is despite the good taste. I would recommend eating the salad rolls as it is, and the peanut sauce is good for your bean sprouts. I recommend chomping-down with the tofu side on tongue. Unlike others, the spring rolls are thinner but sweet. The crispy outer is clean and plane. Every bite is smooth in the centre, and it is a sweet starchy inside. I am told that it's made with veggies, mungbeans, and bean sprouts. The vegetable broth is not a simple vegetable broth from a Campbell's stock. When you first receive it, a sip is warm enough to get blood rushing to your ears. The flavour is bold and salty to remind you of cold winter seasons behind a steaming soup that one might enjoy as much as desert. The noodles are like the typical rice noodles. They are elastic, chewy, and flavourful by the sweetness. The large bowl is a larger noodle bundle to enjoy. You should wait for the noodles to soak the broth, so it's easy to pull. I recommend eating the noodles for a while, and you should add bean sprouts when you find the soup too salty. With the bean sprouts, the soup is balanced and a mix of salty and washed-out flavours. The sandwich is same tofu as salad rolls. The bread, the cucumbers, carrots, bell peppers, cilantros, and jalapeños are standard and good. I should ask for no butter/mayo for a vegan version. I prefer the salad rolls to this sub. read more

This was on my way home and on my way to go to some shops on Fraser. I wanted something cheap and filling. This place is a step up from a hole in the wall but there is no character. I had some BBQ chicken on rice. It wasn't that bad, however, nothing to write home about. The cuts were cheap as expected, however, I went into this establishment knowing fully well what I was getting into, therefore, this is not a reflection of the food. Also, I just realized this restutant has the most sauce choice in all Vietnamese around the town. Usually, they don't have fish sauce, pepper, and napkins on the table so you can add the amount according to your own tastes. The are very friendly and I eat there so often the know exactly what I'm going to order. And I highly recommend that if you do the pho to go get the noodles uncooked and cook them at home only takes a few minutes in boiling water. You guys rock. read more

The view chicken rice plate #45 came with two huge chicken thigh filets that looked like steaks. Meat is sooo tender and juicy and nicely fragrant with lemongrass with crispy-ish broiled chicken skin, and lots of rice and pickled veg. Had the house special viet sub and ice coffee. It was my first time here with a client. The client ordered pho and said the broth was too salty. The sub was ok but it had a little too much liver taste in the pate for my liking. I don't mind liver, but the taste was overwhelming and it was overpowering the rest of the ingredients in the sub. Place looked new with a nice clean interior. However, this only backs up the theory that the cleaner the pho restaurant is, the dishes are not as tasty. Just my own personal experience. This is my go-to place for Vietnamese food; it's inexpensive, and the food is fantastic. I am not going to comment that "the price is good for what you get," because, no, they can sell their items for a lot more and I would still come here. The subs are amazing, the bread is crisp on the outside, and the middle is fluffy, just divine. I judge most Vietnamese places on how great their lemongrass chicken is and this place has the best lemongrass chicken in the area! Ordered a pho as well as a rice combo, mixed feelings about this place. The soup that came with the combo was RIDICULOUSLY SALTY, it likely has a sodium content that puts instant noodles to shame. The combo I ordered came with all 3 types of brochettes (skewers): the chicken one was great, nicely seasoned and juicy. The beef was tough, chewy, and bland; just awful. The pork was OK not particularly good or bad. The spring rolls it came with were nicely cooked but bland, I don't know if this was the result of the assault the soup took on me as it was the first thing served. The house special pho (#9) was OK but to be honest I rarely come across a bowl of pho I don't like. The beef quality seemed above average but the broth lacked the rich aroma of the better pho joints in town. In terms of decor and cleanliness Gia Minh is above average for a Vietnamese restaurant. However the ambiance was awkwardly quiet as there were only 4 customers and no music. Eventually they put on a CD of Mickey Mouse Christmas carols which only made things worse, but to top it all off they allowed donation collectors to go around bugging us for money. Feeling a little under the weather, I was really craving some nice hot pho. Walking down the street, I spotted Gia Minh's lit neon sign- a rarity on a holiday Sunday evening. I was greeted, seated, and provided with hot water immediately. Service is prompt and efficient. I ordered the chilli garlic tofu and the large veggie pho spring roll combo. The tofu was fine, but nothing special. The pho arrived quickly after and I was pleasantly surprised to see it full to the brim with fresh veggies. It was piping hot, though not overly flavourful, but still good. I was given a large plate of bean sprouts and basil, and I had a myriad of other flavourings to choose from at the table. I could barely finish the pho, let alone the spring roll and tofu, so my advice: get the small pho and you'll be more than satisfied. Plus at a cool $7.25, your wallet will be too. read more

My family loves this place. We order delivery from them probably twice a month. Our picky toddler loves the lemongrass chicken and we can't get enough to of the spicy Pho. They have no problem with our special requests to sub out meats, change noodles etc. The food always arrives hot and quickly. Was planning on eating in but was instantly repulsed when I entered the restaurant. Very hot and humid, and there was an awful smell of sewage. Thought I was able to handle it or it would go away when I sat down but found it still hung around. Decided to do take out. When I got home and opened the soup broth, the soup smelled instantly like a mixture of coffee and cinnamon, which sounds appetizing but for pho, it was outputting. Brother came by to smell it and confirmed that I should not eat it since it didn't smell good or like pho broth at all. My party of 11 decided to grab dinner here as it had the best reviews and close proximity to our accommodation. (We were staying in Vancouver for the weekend.) We all arrived about 6pm and the place was not busy. Our party consisted of 5 adults and 6 kids. We were seated right away in 2 separate tables. Everyone was tired and hangry after a 4 hour drive up to Vancouver. My table was given water and menus right away but the other table did not. They had to ask 3x for the menu and water. After what felt like more than 10 minutes, I had to wave down the waitress to order my tables food as she kept walking pass but did not stop by our table. After grabbing her attention, she told me to wait and walked away. She came back after 5 mins and took my tables order. She didn't even bother to ask for the order of the the second table. (In which they had to wave her down to attempt to order). My table got our meals after a reasonable amount of time but the second table had to wait almost 30 minutes for a few of the dishes. The last 2 dishes arrived after everyone else finished their dishes & after asking the waitress if our food was still being made. To which she answered in a stern voice, "Are you in a rush?" The waitress never refilled our water cups the entire time we were there. Food overall was mediocre, nothing special about it. Overall, my experience here was horrible. Customer service is non existent. Definitely stay away. read more

I come to this restaurant at least once a week. The prices are very reasonable for the quality and portion size of the dishes. Here is a rundown of what I have personally tasted. Rare beef and beef ball pho: I find the broth to be very flavourful without being overly salty. The same can be said about the beef balls. The rare beef slices are also very nice in texture and not gristly. The bean sprouts, basil leaves, lime wedge and chili pepper that come on the side are generously portioned and in my experience always fresh and crisp. Grilled chicken sub: This is delicious! The grilled chicken is very well seasoned without being too salty and the sub comes packed with pickled vegetables and cilantro. It is actually very filling due to the generous amount of chicken they give you. Grilled pork skewer and spring roll on vermicelli: This is possibly my favourite thing on the menu. They are very generous with the portion of pork included in this dish. You only get one spring roll, but it is of a good size and very tasty. What I particularly like about the way Gia Minh executes this dish is that the vermicelli sits on a bed of shredded lettuce, bean sprouts and shredded basil leaves. Other restaurants just fill the bowl up with straight vermicelli. I like the vegetables at the bottom because they lighten up the dish as well as provide a nice fresh crunchiness to the meal. Lots of pickled carrot and daikon on the side, and the sweet vinegar sauce is very tasty too. They put chili flakes in it, which gives it a little spice. Special Gia Minh dry rice noodle: This was not really my favourite, but not because they didn't do a good job of it. Mostly it was because I didn't really care for the toppings. It is a dry rice noodle dish topped with squid, plain boiled pork and liver. There is a very rich sweet soy sauce gravy drizzled over it. I was being adventurous when I ordered it, but it wasn't something that I would personally order again. All in all, I am a fan of this restaurant. I had to take one star off however, because the service at times can be spotty. It's not as if the servers are intentionally neglectful or rude, but some of them are definitely not experienced waitstaff. They will do things like answer the phone in the middle of taking your order or reach over you while you're eating to fill the napkin dispenser. English is a problem for some of the servers as well, which is fine when you know what you want and can simply point at an item on the menu, but asking questions about particular dishes can be challenging. I have had a few frustrating miscommunications with servers here. The last thing I want to mention about this restaurant is that I feel much less thirsty after eating here than I do at other Vietnamese restaurants. Whether this is because they don't add as much MSG or simply cut down on the salt/soy sauce used in their recipes I don't know. It's definitely one of the factors that keeps me going back regularly though. read more
