This place remains as one of our goto spots as a family for comfort food. There's always free parking around. Lots of space inside the restaurant and always a relaxed atmosphere. They have recently added a side table of kids items like colouring books and crayons to keep the wee ones occupied. It seems like they updated their menu since we came here last time. It was slightly confusing. We have to look a few times to find the regular pho. However, I do see that they added a lot of new and family style dishes. We went to some more traditional menu item like pho and the beef rib rice combo. The rice combo came with a bowl of soup as well but the soup was on the salty side. The beef rib was really tender. It's nice that the combo includes 2 side which I never really had before. The vermicelli bowl lemongrass chicken was very tender and flavorful. The fish cake pho needed more salt, but I realized that was what the salty fish sauce was for. Once I added that, it was perfect. It had a nice dill flavor and good amount of fishcake and fishballs. The service is always good here and the restaurant appears clean and spacious. 4.5 stars. read more

I've been here a number of times and I think food is always a hit or miss. Consistency seems to be an issue. The place itself is just your normal Vietnamese restaurant. Nothing stands out; good or bad. You can find a mix of people here of various ages. Service is fine but if busy takes some time to get anybody's attention. I find the chicken wings here to be quite good. Phos are fine when they give you enough protein. Other times seems like they scrimp on the proteins. Latest time I came, I tried their Steamed Rice Sheet Platter. By the name I assumed this would come with rice sheets to wrap the proteins but seems this wasn't the case. Instead, it's just noodle (dry). That said the spring roll was good and the skewers were good. Albeit the spring roll was a tad on the oily side. Good Vietnamese food but pricey for what we ordered. My friend and I came for dinner around 7:30 on Tuesday and it wasn't too crowded. We snagged one of the empty tables and ordered an appetizer and entrée to share, as neither of us were super hungry. The menu is three pages and has a good variety of dishes, ranging from appetizers to noodle soups to vermicelli plates to rice plates and other dinner specialities. We shared the a half order of #14, the garlic butter chicken wings, for $11.95, as well as #40, the sugarcane wrapped shrimp cake, for $19.95. The chicken wings were good but I couldn't taste any garlic. It was also super bland, so we had to dip it in the tray of salt provided for flavor. The shrimp cake was really good, but we were both disappointed by the small portion. One order only comes with 2 sugarcane wrapped shrimp cakes, which seemed very little for the $20 price tag on the dish. Next time I come, I think I'll go for the pho or some other noodle soup. We love the sour soup here. You can choose from fish, prawns, etc and it comes with lots of veggies such as okra, bean sprouts, tomatoes and lots more. Excellent selection of items on their menu and new dishes that you might not see elsewhere Dry mixed noodles - we didn't like this dish too much because the sauce wasn't mixed in very well and the noodles stuck together which didn't help. I wish they mixed the sauce in better so the noodles were more evenly coated so each bite was as flavourful as the last. The shrimp was fried nicely and the wonton wrapper around it kept crispy. DIY pho - While they have preset choices for their pho, there is also an option for you to choose your own meats. We went with that and got it with tendon, beef balls and rare beef. The beef wasn't all beef slices and some pieces were very sinewy which we weren't a fan of. The broth was good though and made up for it as well as the fact that they put lots of toppings inside! However, I did find it incredibly annoying that I was asked for ID before being served a beer. And he was serious. Both of us are in our 70's. Seriously? Slowly trying to work my way through all the Vietnamese spots. The solid ratings made me want to try Hai Phong Vietnamese Restaurant. It's located in a small plaza that houses Domino's and a few other businesses. We dropped in on a Thursday evening (around 7:15pm) and it was a third full. The inside is large with a TV in the back (NFL game was up). Service is friendly they never came back to refill our teas nor to check up on us. Menu is huge with beverages, appetizers, pho, specialty noodle soups, vermicelli, steam vermicelli sheets, rice dishes, dinner, vegetarian and hot pot. Trip #1 - Bun rieu (#26) ($8.95 small) - shredded crab meat, pork feet, pork blood, Vietnamese ham and tofu puffs with vermicelli in shrimp paste soup. Served with bean sprouts, banana blossom and shredded morning glory. Broth had good depth and flavour. Crab meat was plentiful along with a nice variety of meats. I'd get a large next time. - Canh chua (#72) ($15.95 small) - fresh pineapple, bean sprouts, tomato, okra, fried garlic, herbs and taro stem in a tamarind broth. This is pricey but if you want something different, this is it. The broth was hot, sweet and sour; really a unique flavour. Oddly, it doesn't come with any rice or noodles (think you have to pay extra) which is lame. We opted for the fish and FYI, it comes with bones. I've seen cheaper elsewhere. Trip #2 - Bun bo hue dac biet (#33) ($10.95) - beef, pork, pork feet, pork blood, pork balls and Vietnamese ham with thick vermicelli noodles. The broth was okay but the salt was overpowering. All the meat was tender and delicious. - Bun rieu (#32) ($10.95) - Pho dac biet (#19) ($9.95) - house special mixed beef with rice noodles. - Create your own soup (#26) - Ol went with regular broth and added beef balls, beef brisket and tripe. Nice that they have this option! - Bun bi cha gio ga nuong (#44) ($10.95) - grilled lemongrass chicken, spring rolls and shredded pork on vermicelli. Came here for lunch and ordered the Bun Bu Hue and chicken wings. I've been here before COVID and the consistency is still there. The noodle soup was flavorful, noodles were perfect, good amount of meat, pork blood, pork hock etc..yummy. the soup itself was spicy and what I really liked was the soup was HOT! The chicken wings were really good, crispy, plump, seasoned...it had lots of garlic, green peppers. Came with a dipping sauce made with lime and black pepper (ala Phnom Penh). This place has gone downhill in the last 2 years. Last two times I have ordered from there they have messed up my order. First time they completely forgot the vegetables that accompany the dish (#63), so I had to walk back and get it. No refund or discount was offered. Then again tonight I ordered the same dish (along with more food) and they completely forgot the sauce and dressing that goes with the salad and beef. Again called them they apologized but offered no discount or refund. I feel that if a restaurant makes a mistake which makes the dish completely different than what I ordered they should offer a full refund on the dish or at the very least a discount or future discount. I was here with my friend Cindy last Tuesday (September 11th) and it was alright. Cindy had #45 Grilled Pork Patty, Spring roll and Pork skewer on Vermicelli ($10.95) and I had #33 BBH ($10.95) our food came in a big portion. Cindy had a hard time finishing her food. My food was okay it was a bit bland. I think it needed more chilli oil and lemongrass in my soup. Some meat toppings (especially pork) wasn't tender. It tasted rather rubbery, yuck. Pork hams and meat balls tasted good though. This location tends to give more meat toppings than the China Town one. I would like to give 4 stars if I could, but the soup was just not flavorful enough. I didn't feel thirsty in the end though. Came here a few times now and each time, they screwed up our orders so this will be in parts. Food: Food was good. The beef pho was delicious and the broth was flavorful yet not to salty. Overall, the food here is really good. Better than some places. Place: The place is bigger than most Vietnamese restaurants and there is a shared parking lot in front. There is also street parking along Kingsway but keep in mind of the 3pm to 7pm 'No Parking'. The floors are tile so it can be a bit slippery, either from the rain or grease. I recommend that they have some carpet by the door to absorb the rain. Service: Here is where it is up and down. The staff are friendly and quick BUT they really need to write down the orders. The waiter tries to remember the orders but when he starts to walk away, he turns around and tries to confirm what we ordered and it's already wrong. Tell him again but I don't think he remembered. Why, you ask? First time, we ordered one beef special (#19), well done beef pho, lemongrass pork chop on rice and chicken with fried egg on rice. What came was 2 #19, and 2 lemongrass chicken. Second time we were here, order 1 beef special, 1 pork chop with shredded pork on rice, well done beef pho and pork skewer with vermicelli. I came here for some comfort food when I happened to be in the neighborhood, and it did not disappoint. I was given a free cup of tea right away with the menu, always a good sign, and I settled on the same basic order I make at every new Vietnamese place I try: rare beef pho and deep spring rolls. Service was incredibly fast - I might have gotten my soup faster than any other place I've been. And the pho broth was delicious, some of the most flavourful I've had, with decent servings of noodles and meat to boot. I loved the pho! The spring rolls were good too - not my favorite style personally (I prefer fewer but larger spring rolls, and these were small), but they tasted good, and much like the pho the dipping sauce was amazing. I dare say they might have the best nuoc cham I've tried in the city (though I'm always on the lookout for good new Viet places). I'd definitely recommend trying this place out! Anytime 'pho' is mentioned, this has always been a place that has come to mind. Everytime I have been here, ever since the first time I stepped foot 3 years ago... it has been consistent and judging from the business lately (with the expansion of the 2nd location) they must be doing pretty good. Sunday afternoon, and this place is packed.... you can almost see the sweat on the servers running around here... it was this busy... ok... so it's a place for many as a go-to option. We were eventually seated, as some people left, and they frantically cleaned up the spot... leaving the table a little wet from the wiping cloth. We were presented the menus.. and I decided on a small rare beef and beef shoulder small bowl of pho. I quote my dear "when they say "small", they really mean "small"... I should have re-read her review... this place definitely can compete for smallet bowl.. what is this a normal half serving? Good thing I'm not a big eater or I would have major problems with this. So the 'small' bowl comes out... piping hot.... clean broth... a pretty good taste.. not too sweet, a good proportion of meat to carbs. I can't really say anything special about this dish.. it satisfied the hunger, especially a small one like mine... the taste was consistenent, nothing else much to say.. except it was weighing heavy on me. I did feel the after-effects of the sodium... (or was it MSG???) which put me in a food coma for a little while. Even with the above being said, I would still come back... I may have come on a day where things were a little off. It's definitely not the cheapest place for a bowl of noodles, after looking at the price again.. a small is almost the price of a large at others... but overall it's been a pretty good place. If you are coming by car, there is parking in the small plaza, just read the signs of where not to park, also Kingsway has a ton of free parking.... so unless it's really prime-time busy... you won't need to be walking too far from your vehicle to get in here. read more

Oh my where to begin. This place has the best pho in all of Vancouver hands down. We got their pho special, a braised pork dish and garlic butter chicken wings were blown away by all the dishes. The braised pork came out still boiling in a clay bowl and it was one of the best dishes I've had. Heard a lot about this place and decided to give it a try with some friends. Parking is ample as the venue is inside a strip mall. Service is friendly. They give you the option of hot and cold tea. No way?? My friend wanted to try their "special sauce" before buying their signature noodle dish, and they gladly obliged. He told me it was quite good. I had my benchmark dish - beef steak and beef ball pho. The beef ball had a nice "homemade" texture, but I remember crunching my teeth on a piece of gristle. The noodles were not mushy, and the soup was good as expected. For toppings, they had the typical pho leaves, limes, and this vegetable I don't know the name of. But it's authentic as I remember having it in Vietnam. The arrangement of tables is quite nice, as it can be easily modified to fit a large group (up to 12 people) without much difficulty. Having a larger menu, I came here for a large family dinner for some delicious vietnamese noms and was pleased with the price but wasn't blown away. We ordered spring rolls which were nice and crispy and garlic chicken wings which were good but not comparable to phenom penh both for appetizers. Next, we got a dry noodle that i really really liked! It was lots of different ingredients with a soy sauce that that you mix all together to make a delicious meal. Also got a rice with multiple meats on top and this was standard. Also, we got the vietnamese crepe which i ADORED with a mildly oily egg crepe that was filled with bean sprouts. It was both refreshing and tasty at the same time. Finally, we got a luc lac beef stir fry that was tasty but definitely lacking in beef pieces and overloaded with onions. We came for a late lunch on a Thursday and it wasn't too busy. It is spacious and clean, with spaced out tables, and dividers between tables. The service was really efficient and friendly. I love how 1) all the Pho is the same price ($14.50), and you can just make your own combination of ingredients for the same price and 2) they serve booze! Beer, wine, soju and it wasn't jacked up prices (bottle of decent wine is about $20). We also got spring rolls and garlic chicken wings.... get the chicken wings they are amazing!!! We will be back. One of the few Vietnamese restaurants that I've been to numerous times where I haven't had a negative experience! Not only do they have very kind & attentive service, the food comes out rather quickly too. We hadn't noticed that the spot closed in 10 minutes and casually strolled in.. they still served us (pretty much 5 minutes to closing) and were so nice about it that we didn't even notice! (Until I noticed their hours when I checked in on Yelp) Onto the food.. we ordered a couple items that needed to be eaten with rice.. and forgot to order the rice. Haha, pretty awesome attention to detail because the waitress noticed and ordered it for us. If cleanliness is your thing, this may not be your place. Multiple dirty tables from the leftover lunch crowd. Decided to try it to kill time while I waited for my Dad getting a reflexology appointment next door. Yes, prices are a shade higher than most Vancouver Vietnamese restaurants, but not so over the top. Like many of these types of restaurants, friendliness needs work (but for the well-spoken one server) and don't ask for a straw. You'll have one of them reach into their straw container and hand you one, no napkin, no courtesy extended. In other words, there's no effort to make sure your straw is "handled" properly. That said, I can handle the hygiene, the slightly inflated prices, but what bugs me is the ratios of the food are off. Flavors of the food are decent, and their (Jackfruit) shakes are well-made, but way too much noodles, too much veggies, and a little skimpy on meat, protein, etc.... This was the first stop on our restaurant crawl last night!! We were in the area and looked on YELP to see what was close by! We were craving some Banh mi so we choose Vietnamese! Unfortunately they didn't serve Banh mi at this location...haha maybe should have checked the menu! A friend who lives in the neighbourhood took me here. Because it was my first time here, I went with the Pho Dac Biet which is my go to when trying new places and judging their standards. The large bowl of Pho was a generous portion with lots of noodles, there's a few places in town that just give you a bigger bowl with more soup but the large Pho for $9-10 is quite filling. The meats in the Dac Biet were great although I felt the broth was a bit lacking in flavour. I'm a bit of a Pho purist so I don't like adding sauces into my noodles, but if that's your style this may be a good place for you. Lots of parking and friendly helpful service are a plus. They say they close at 9PM but a table near us was seated at 9 and served promptly. The menu is also quite big with some dinner specials that you won't find at simpler Pho joints. read more
