Why four stars? Can you believe (in all of my travels) I have never had Pho? What is wrong with me! I went with a friend who has been to Vietnam and all over Southeast Asia...he said this was really good for "Bangor, Maine." If you enjoy "hole in the walls" as much as I do, this is the place for you. I had a small vegetarian Pho and the bowl is still bigger than my head. I loved it!! I added a little Sriracha sauce and down the hatch! Sleep away, friends. Add the sprouts, add the Thai Basil and some jalapeño and such a lovely bowl of delicious, healthy food. Eat it with chopsticks then slurp up the broth. Don't be shy! I should have grabbed a menu to take home : this is a very small place. They probably do most of their business doing take-out. No alcohol. They have soda, water, and Bubble Tea. It was SO hot in there!! But really, this isn't a place that specializes in "eating in." It's about the food. My husband and I were in Bangor for the afternoon, and I looked to trusty yelp to figure out where to eat. This place had great ratings, so we decided to check it out. It is definitely a takeout-heavy place, and very unassuming. There aren't many tables, and we were the only ones dining in on a Tuesday afternoon. The wait was about a half hour, which I didn't think was super long but the girl running the counter apologized for it. My curry was great and very vegetable-heavy, which I liked. The rice was a bit dry, though. My husband got a beef rice plate and really liked the meat but could've done without the pickled vegetables (his preference - I tried them and thought they were good). Only disappointment here is they are a bit stingy with the cilantro herbs and the place is a bit small. Really, that's it. Never disappointed, so glad that they are here for my Phó fix. I had no idea this little gem existed! I stumbled upon Pho Hoa grill and had a soul quenching huge bowl of meatball pho! Really, really awesome. The only down side is that the young lady taking orders and running the register couldn't have cared less about me as a customer. No smile, no thank you, nothing, just grumpiness. She's probably having an off day, but unfortunately, customer service doesn't get a day off. They advertise several flavors of bubble tea, but grumpy cat said it takes too long to make (20 mins or so), essentially convinced me not to order it. Uh, why is it on the menu? We're from the Seattle area, and have eaten at many Vietnamese restaurants, choosing this place based on the reviews. I cannot recommend this place to anyone based on the customer service of the young lady working up front. She was not interested in having to talk to anyone, including a gentlemen who came in for a " to go" menu. I ordered the pork rice plate, portions and flavor was a 4/5. Hubby had a shrimp stir fry with eggplant, very good! I asked for chili sauce, "no, we don't serve it with that plate" , it's .50 if you want some! Asking for soy sauce, she said, "don't think we have any" at this point, I'm wishing we had not come here. She did find me a little soy sauce, and I mean a little. In all maybe 1.5 tsp. Half way thru my meal, I asked for a refill of soy, wow, by her reaction (a major eye roll) you would have thought I had ordered her to get her nose off of her cell phone and show just a hint of courtesy. The little lady cooking in the back did come out to say "thank you" when we were leaving. I always feel bad posting a less than ideal review. I know everyone in the food service industry works hard! However, being in marketing for over 20 years, I understand how honest and accurate reviews are greatly appreciated by a business who wants to get things right, to provide the best to their customers. Being from California, my standards for Asian cuisine have been set pretty high. I was worried I wouldn't find a restaurant of comparable quality when I moved to Bangor. I must admit this restaurant gives me a huge sense of relief. Got the chicken pho, and it was amazing! Bowl for the smallest size was big enough I could have fit my head inside it--enough for two people if I'm honest, but I was there by myself so I took the rest to go. Easily the richest and tastiest chicken pho I've had. I was surprised by the topping of sliced onions, but it tasted very good. I also enjoyed adding my sides of bean sprouts, fresh basil, lime slice and the optional hoisin and sriracha sauces. There are a few tables inside that seat two and four, as well as a bar with stools by the window, and picnic tables outside. Don't expect much for interior ambiance or seating for groups however. Also, when I reheated the soup the next day, the noodles dissolved into the broth, so I suspect it's best eaten as soon as possible. Wow is all I can say. This place had the most divine drunken noodle I've ever tasted. I've traveled across the country attempting to find the best thai and vietnamese food and who would've thought I'd find it in Bangor, Maine. We stopped here on our way down the coast after visiting Acadia and I have to say, looking at the building from the outside had me a little hesitant. Mainly because the restaurant was fairly small and located in the middle of a neighborhood. But once we stepped inside, I knew it was going to be good. I ordered the XL combo Pho which is now $14 (not pictured cause it's an ugly bowl and It doesn't scream PHO!) and I Togo the Grill pork rice plate also. - XL Pho combo definitely a rip off for $14 with few slices of beef, 3 meatballs and lots of fatty beef brisket. They are missing alot of ingredients for the Pho. Don' t order the XL Pho combo or you will regret the $14 you have thrown away. - Grilled Pork Rice Plate is ok. Meat is on the sweet side. But you can definitely taste the lemongrass. It's beautifully packed (that's why I took a pic) I give 5 stars for customer service though. The meatballs were still cold in the center and I brought it to the Waiters attention and the owner had fixed me up with another 3 meatballs that was in hot broth and those were hot. First the good stuff: The food is good, like seriously good. We got pho here and they give you the nice little bundle of fragrant Thai basil. It's the little things! Now, the not-so-good: They don't have any indoor seating to speak of, so if you order it's either got to be nice out and summertime (in which case you eat at the picnic table) or you have to be getting take-out. And it's really expensive if you're going to be getting it to go. I would love to see this place do well and get bigger digs with proper seating. This is the consummate Vietnamese eatery I've been searching for in this area for years ! The Fresh Spring Rolls are the best and just as they should be : fresh, raw, crispy vegetables all rolled in rice paper...not deep-fried. The Pho comes in separate containers : broth, vegetables, and sauces. You can add what you want with however much you want for your palate...just as it should be. I ordered the summer roll and the seafood yellow noodle soup. The summer rolls were ok, the thing that I felt it was missing were the 2 most important ingredients, which is the protein and basil. It looked like 1 small shrimp split in half and they put too much scallion in the rolls. The peanut sauce wasn't traditional peanut sauce, very thin, light and a bit sweet for some reason. As for the seafood yellow noodle soup, they need to work on the broth. It's all wrong, bland and sweet. Definitely not good, it should be savory not sweet. I'd like to go back to try the pho next to truly determine whether this place is worth the $ or not.
