Do not eat here!!! Easily the worst asian food I have had and I'm genuinely concerned I may get sick from it. The "fresh spring roll" was boiled. The sushi was inedible and looked like a child attempted to roll it. Crab Rangoon's were the shining star and they were luke warm. The seaweed salad was questionable at best. From other reviews it seems this place has changed management. The new management should take a long hard look in the mirror and maybe consider changing careers to waste management or cooking a simpler cuisine like peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. We *used to* love this restaurant, it's always our "go to" for special occasions. I've been pregnant all year and was so excited to order sushi tonight. I ordered our normal crab cucumber salad and Bethany maki. Everything was different, the maki rice seemed mushy and the crab and cumber salad were large chunks instead of shredded. We ordered/paid for Shumai which wasn't in the bag and also ordered Singapore noodles..the noodles did not appear to be vermicelli noodles like normal, or if they were they were completely overcooked and all mushed together. This makes me so sad.. this was our favorite sushi place and it seems the new ownership has let it gone down hill. read more

Service here was wonderful! Our server was the only one on duty and she still knocked it out the park. The food was really good and had good portions. The prices are reasonable. I ordered the fried shumai and this was very good but instead of a spicy mayo that I'm used to they served a spicy mustard, which was also good. Their miso soup was flavorful. And their tempura shrimp and veggies were yummy. However, I question if it was fried in the usually tempura batter. The batter was a bit thick instead of panko. Other than that I'm a fan! Food is good but not amazing -- 7 out of 10. It used to be better (I've dined at Yoshi probably 10 times over the past dozen years) but it's still worth a visit. However, my last experience left me with a mildly sour taste. My large order of Sushi Deluxe arrived with a tiny amount of wasabi -- about the size of three or four peas. Remarkably, even in a fairly quiet restaurant with maybe five tables occupied by couples and one small friend group, the waitress was inattentive enough that I could not get her attention despite trying from my table to wave her over and request more wasabi. This went on for five minutes. I finally went to the front, politely asked her when she walked by, and she promptly brought the wasabi. Good. When the bill arrived, I noticed I got charged for the wasabi. Da hell? I don't mind spending that extra $1.25 on a satisfying meal if the restaurant is hard-up, but then at least build it into the price of the dish. Getting nickel-and-dimed like that just rubs me the wrong way. The restaurant did remove the charge when I asked if I should pay expect to pay extra for ketchup at a burger joint. The wasabi thing was a small annoyance in the scheme of things but the experience did bug me...and taint my meal. read more

My first experience eating sushi was at Yoshi for dinner with my brother years ago. Everything we ordered that night was excellent and I found a love of sushi. I have visited several times over the years and have also ordered take-out and have never been disappointed. Yoshi's is my wife and I's anniversary restaurant. We go here every single year, and have since 2016. However, in the past two years, we've noticed the decline in some of the dishes. There are some dishes that are quite delicious - and some that are so far fusion forward, that they get lost in translation. Most of the sushi is good. However, the service is great - the people are kind. And the restaurant itself is rather cozy and has a decent ambience. All in all, it's an okay place to eat. read more

Man oh man, Yoshi is my absolute favorite sushi in the Bangor area. Green Tea? Nope. Kobe? ABSOLUTELY not. Yoshi? A resounding yes! I may be a little bit biased because I used to work there, but I promise, sushi connoisseurs that I've taken to Yoshi all walk out ranting and raving. Ting (owner/sushi bar extraordinaire) puts his heart and soul into creating delicious sushi, and it shows. The fish is fresh and ingredients are sourced from the surrounding area. The rice is fresh and absolute perfection; any other place I've tried in the area tends to have really thick, congealed rice and it's pretty unappealing. If you like a salty/tangy punch, ask for caper sauce with your sushi. It's absolutely delicious. As for the entrees, I'm a huge fan of the pad Thai and the poke bowl. Be warned, the pad Thai isn't necessarily authentic Thai; it has Japanese/Vietnamese infusions. It's slathered in this peanut curry sauce which is toooo dieeeee forrr. Now. The poke bowl. Holy mother of goodness. I usually get the hamachi (yellowtail) and it's so good I would it it for all three meals if I could. They put this on the menu after I stopped working there, which is honestly good. Otherwise I would've spent all my tip money eating this for dinner every night. It's magic, you need to try it. If you come into Yoshi in a hurry, don't bother. This is a small, family-run business that puts effort and consideration into their dishes. Beautiful food takes time and cannot be rushed. Factor this in as you make dinner plans! All that being said, Yoshi is a high-class sushi restaurant and is an absolute gem for the Bangor area. I've tried all the other sushi restaurants in the area and none hold a candle to this lovely place. Working here in high school was a huge bonus; I got to experience real, delicious ethnic cuisine here. That has since opened my taste-buds up to a lifetime of tasting delicious new flavors and appreciating cultures outside of my own. Me and my friends had a great dinner tonight at Yoshi! They made our belly's full and happy. We ordered Pho, Bento, Calamari, Crab Rangoon, Taro Boba, and Yoshi Island. I personally super love the Calamari and Crab Rangoon so much! I had to order one to go, it was the most fluffiest and softest Crab Rangoon I ever had, it just melted inside my mouth once I ate it, I highly recommend it! Same with the Calamari, Overall everything was fantastic with all the food we ate, the place was amazing and I personally admire and love how they plate each dish, it was a great experience for all of us, and it's worth every penny to try their food! read more

Back of house seems to have it figured out. Food was good. Front of house is a mess. Server gave us our food without any utensils then disappeared. After 15 minutes of eating what we could with our hands we asked the hostess for utensils and napkins. She acted annoyed. Oh, and the "recommended tip" percentage in their bill includes the tax. The percentage (20% etc) should not include tax. That's just shady. Whole front of house is in desperate need of good management. Not on our list of going back to any time soon. read more

Of more concern- sushi chef was seen to go from food prep, open the cash register, take stuff from the draw, and go back to food prep without changing his gloves. Okay we're gonna scale this for small town food, but even when not a toned down scale, I'll say the sushi here is pretty good. I ordered over the phone and paid for it at pick up. Food took about 45 minutes to be prepared. The parking lot for the restaurant is a little small, but looks like right now is it's mostly takeout with limited dine in. The tables are pretty spaced out. Yoshi has a pretty big menu. Some Thai options, lots of sushi, and some Japanese comfort food. This time, I got the sushi deluxe and the spicy maki combo. Although the rolling quality isn't all there but the fish is super fresh. The fish on the nigiri was super buttery. Each entree comes with a side salad with ginger dressing and miso soup. Five stars for the sushi and Japanese dishes (and I used to work in Japan). Casual place, just focused on providing good food. The head sushi chef takes great care in his work, and seems to be doing a good job of teaching the art to those who work with him. The folks in the kitchen aren't slouches, either. The only real downside is the service. Lately, we've all become accustomed to understaffed restaurants, but if the servers learned their trade they could handle the number of customers they get. It's not horrible, just annoying when you have to ask for more water, they say they'll get it and forget about you. They could probably increase the orders per table, with a little training in upselling, as well. read more

I ordered a bento box that didn't come in a bento box... 1. For starters, I wasn't allowed to substitute my miso soup for any other soup. I was pretty sure I remembered hating miso soup. So I offered to pay for the one I wanted to be substituted. I made it clear I didn't want miso soup. But they wouldn't substitute and gave it anyway. I figured I'd try it just to confirm. Yup. Still tastes like the smell of low tide. I was told the utensils were in the bag, and chopsticks were. I like chopsticks, but you can't eat soup with chopsticks. It's a good thing I didn't need a spoon to taste and toss it. 2. The tofu nuggets are actually nuggets mixed with carrot and edamame. They're good. I expected whole block pieces of tofu, but I can't complain here. 3. The chicken katsu was ok. I almost tasted more like pork, and I felt it didn't live up to the reviews I read about it. The dipping sauce was interesting; I couldn't decide what I thought of it. 4. The fruit/rice tasted a little fishy. I still ate the fruit and some of the rice. *shrug* 5. The boba tea was served frozen. I guess some people like that, but I didn't expect that. It doesn't say on the menu that it's frozen. So I'm kind of just letting it melt to save my sensitive teeth. 6. Lastly, the house salad was really good. I'd order that again. 7. The girl up front wasn't remotely friendly... and again, no spoon in the bag. I didn't end up needing one, but what if I did? I always tip takeout, rarely the full 20 but still about 15%. She eyed it and scoffed. Would I go again? Maybe for the soup I actually wanted and salad. But I'd probably just opt for straight Thai or Vietnamese instead to fulfill the craving. read more

I am the Water Man, but I also get hungry, and hungry, I was. I am currently on a crusade across the Northeast and I am currently driving from MDI to Falmouth, ME. So, while I was driving I was famished and was hoping to find an Asian Restaurant. I came across Yoshi in Bangor, and walked out satisfied. While the water was decent enough to drink, the food was perfectly fine and my Katsu Bento box was really good. Thumbs up to any travelers in need to get a quick meal and a decent cup of water. I do suggest to get actual glasses and not use cheap Pepsi cups, which are usually not a good sign. read more

This establishment knows what it's doing. I was one of the only customers that chose to dine in on a Wednesday, and they still had excellent service, checking up regularly to see if I was satisfied and comfortable. I usually dine at Benkay in Portland, but as I was up in the Bangor area, I decided to give them a try. Their food was excellent, I got a chicken katsudon dinner, with miso and tofu soup and a taro bubble tea, for a total of $20. All of them exceeded my expectations, and I left both full and happy. Incredible sushi. Fresh and tasty as well as obvious attention to detail. The maki rolls are fat and filling and the nigiri is fresh and not fishy at all. The service is super. The waitress is kind and energetic and obviously loves her job. The sushi chef will pleasantly alter to your taste after carefully crafting your sushi.
