We really wanted Thai food and wanted Curry. This place had good reviews so we tried it our last night in Kauai. There were a few locals in the restaurant when we arrived. We ordered spring rolls and red curry chicken, with brown rice. The spring rolls were pretty good and the rest of the food arrived as soon as we took a bite of the rolls as an app. I worried though. The flavor in the curry was very good. It was quite a bit thicker than it should be. This was supposed to be chicken. They did give you a lot of it but it was gray in color. (I was assuming it was dark meat). I could not take a chance of getting sick on this sketchy meat, as we are headed back to the Mainland tomorrow. When the cook delivered the food, he had gloves on but the gloves he had on were soiled.The smell of the cigarette smoke wafting in the door from the server smoking outside really made the experience unappetizing. Really poor experience! DO NOT EAT HERE!! I am addending this post. We both ended up getting sick after eating here. My wife got sicker than I did and was up half the night. read more

Came here on a rainy day looking for some hot Pho and it did not disappoint. We arrived around dinner time at 7pm and the place was packed and there were reserved tables with a 30min wait so we just decided to order food to go. I ordered the chicken pho with vegetable broth which came with rice noodles, bean sprouts, basil leaves and some fresh jalapenos and hot sauce. It hit the spot after being drenched in the rain all day but barely had any chicken. We also ordered the chicken fried rice which had good flavor but I wouldn't call it the best friend rice on the market. My friend got the Vermicelli bowl and asked the cashier if it had grilled chicken which he confirmed but when we got the order it had boiled chicken with a lemongrass garlic flavor to it. The pricing was not bad ranging from $10-15 per plate and located in the Ross plaza right by our hotel so good quick comfort food option. Yeah NO unless hungry as heck and desperate. Worse than your typical Viet for service but it's to be expected. The food runner is even worse, the dude is in a hurry maybe because he has the "runs" all day long. The papaya salad had the worse fish sauce ever. I think it was water with food coloring and salt and good thing they didn't mess up on the papaya part. If the sauce were decent then the salad would have been excellent. As for the Pho, holy cow, I ordered the beef with tendon and got 5 small slices of beef and 1 (one) scrap of tendon. The flavor is powdered Pho flavor for sure. It's Monday 8.8.17 at 7.30pm and its at 85 percent full. Yeah, I need to quit day time job and come here and put all these aka Pho joints out of business. The waiter, possibly the head guy in charge, took our order fast and while he wasn't particularly friendly about it, he gave us an excellent recommendation for our 2 year old. Stopped here upon my arrival from Maui. Was looking for a decent meal at a decent price. That's exactly what I got. Service consisted of a lot of grunting and pointing, but I understand that's SOO for authentic pho joints. I got the pho with rare steak, meatball, and tendon. I chose this place because 1. always down for good Viet comfort food 2. I knew it would make my dad happy while we were on vacation because we're all creatures of habit. It did not disappoint! My family has a certain standard when it comes to Vietnamese food, especially since we eat a lot of Pho at home and get takeout quite often in California. I didn't know what to expect when it came to Viet food in Kauai. We got Pho tai bo vien (vietnamese noodle soup w/ beef flank and meatball) and bun thit nuong cha gio (vermicelli noodles with grilled beef and egg roll) and both dishes were delicious! They were generous with the meat portions in the pho as well as bun dishes. My favorite is bun thit nuong, and the grilled beef is very tasty and one of the best I've had. The egg roll, however, is average - I felt like it was missing shrimp or something. I also noticed that the prices are relatively cheap and when we got there, we beat the crowd - as our food came out, the restaurant started to fill up. First of all you would think that after the pandemic people would be grateful to have a job, our server was this blonde lady who was hands down the worst server I have ever had in my entire life. I don't write reviews but here I am. How this lady got hired is beyond me, the food is whatever but I would have had better service if she took a nap at the table. I'm pretty shocked at the other reviews I'm reading. Folks, don't get discouraged. This place is "Pho"-king great! Trust me, I'm a teacher! (Hahaha...what does that mean? I don't know.) So first of all, what is an O'ahu boy doing in Kaua'i, none the less a teacher!? There's school you know! Yeah yeah...I know yelp. I know. I was recently in Kaua'i for the HHSAA (Hawai'i High School Athletics Association) State Bowling competition as a coach for a few of the high school bowlers (so proud of you guys!). Pho Kaua'i (PK) is located right next door to the bowling alley so it's natural due to the laws of supply and demand that if you are stuck near the vicinity of a Pho shop, you have to go there. Right? Well I have to. Okay, enough with the prologue and more on to the food. We were in Kaua'i for 3 days and ate here twice. Twice! Shouldn't that already tell you it's pretty good? So, the menu: Beef Pho: It doesn't matter what you put in it. I like tripe/rare steak (although I accidentally ordered tendon without realizing...my fault :P) personally. PK's is pretty good. Pretty standard if you ask me. Nothing too out of the ballpark. However, it did seem to me that there was a little more TLC in this broth than normal. A few more brownie points here. Bubble Drink: Pretty bad actually. Hard to mess these kinds of drinks up but when I consider all the other bubble drinks I've had in my life this one has a lot left to be desired. From powder, bland bubbles, nuff said. In PK's defense however, being one of the only, if not the only places to get your bubble drink fixes on an island, it isn't that bad. If they used just a little bit of sweetener to rehydrate the bubbles, it would make a world of difference. Egg or rice noodle w/ steam shrimp in Pork broth: My GF had this the first time and we both ordered it on the second visit. This stuff is why I HAD to write a review! Their pork stock is HELLA good! Hella! HELLLAAAAA!! Get it? Got it? Good. This broth is just so...so...good. What more can I say? So rich and full bodied, so...UMAMI!! Words cannot describe what I am trying to say about this soup! Bwaaaaaaaaaaah! I can't figure out what to say? What's wrong with me!? It's the soup I tell you! Soooooup! I want to go back to Kaua'i and eat that again! But I can't until we go back for the bowling state championships! Damnit all! ... ! ... Whew...I had a soup uh...meltdown(?) there. Anywho, try anything w/pork soup in it. #30 to 32 or something on the menu. It's really good yelpers. As for the service, I didn't think it was as bad as others are saying. Even when they were busy it seemed fine. The owner is actually really approachable, friendly, and humble about his food. He works hard to produce a good product (he gets there at about 7 am to open at 10 am and closes at 9 pm) and to me has one of the best pho I've ever had. read more

What you can expect: No parking if the league is playing at the bowling alley next door. Some unsavory looking characters hanging around at the laundromat on the other side. Menus which are so beat up and filthy that they should have been tossed about a year ago. Tables which probably hadn't been wiped down after the last several customers. Perfunctory service by this little man who gave us about 15 seconds to look at the menu before demanding to know what we wanted to order. And if none of the above bothers you, you will find delicious, inexpensive food that is like a breath of fresh air if you have been staying at a resort with expensive, mediocre food. It is not as good as my favorite Vietnamese restaurants in Vancouver but it is still very good. I ordered the #39 Vermicelli Grilled Chicken which had a generous portion of the tasty chicken. Growing up on Kauai, there weren't a ton of options for Vietnamese food. I've been eating at this place since I was in middle school and I can say that I'm still a fan! Whenever I come back to visit we still hit this place up! It's located in Rice Shopping Center between the bowling alley and Ohana Smoke Shop so parking is usually okay/easy to find. They are also open pretty late by Kauai standards. The service here is great! Everyone who works here is super efficient but also very friendly! I honestly love coming in here because of the people who work here. The prices are more than reasonable; around $8 for a bowl of pho. It only comes in one size, however, and is smaller than what I'm used to getting on the mainland. Don't worry, it's still enough to satisfy your pho cravings. My biggest con is probably their broth. It's not as deep and flavorful as other broth that I've had, but it's not the worst. If you're not into pho they have other dishes like com tam and bun thit nuong. Actually, the menu is pretty huge so you'll definitely be able to find SOMETHING you'll like. Personally I'd recommend the pho dac biet or bun thit nuong. Add a cafe sua da (Vietnamese iced coffee) and you have a perfect meal for under $12. If you're used to getting pho on the mainland, this place might come up a little short compared to what you usually get, but it's still worth checking out if you're craving Vietnamese food on Kauai! read more

Yes. I travel thousands of miles to tropical islands on my honeymoon in search of delicious pho. Although Hawaii has amazing seafood dishes, sometimes this girl needs to recharge her system with some good homey noodle soups. The restaurant has no frills, and a lot of locals cluster into this place during dinner. Seating is pretty casual and orders are pushed out pretty fast. Now the for the food: Pho-The piping hot broth from the pho had a nice beefy balance with hints of cinnamon flavors to give the taste layers. It was savory and delicious. Spring rolls- Crispy and not overly greasy with plenty of meat. Grilled pork chop and garlic shrimp- Even though we were stuffed we got take out so we could have a midnight snack at the hotel. The shrimp was cooked in a sauce too sweet for my palate but the grilled pork chop did not disappoint! 2 large pork chops grilled over a bed of rice with some fish sauce on the side. The takeout portions seemed supppper large so most likely i'll be eating my pork chop snacks for breakfast! read more

Authentic... and good. Just like Mark's Place, you will find 5-0 eating here too. They sure know where to eat. Both my wife and I got a pho, it is a nice big bowl and very delicious. But one thing they have that I don't see too often is along with mint, basil, and bean sprouts, they also have a couple of slices of jalapeno. I know they use jalapeno quite often in banh mi, but jalapeno in pho is a nice combo too. This is one of those places that cures homesickness, or more like prevention in my case. No, I'm not Vietnamnese, but as a New Yorker, there are so many various cuisines, it was nice that Kauai offers at least some of that. read more

First, I have to say that this is a small, locally owned, family run (I think?) food stop. Don't come here with high expectations as far as ambiance goes. With that being said, the food is great & I have never had a bad meal here. The service is fast & the owners are always so friendly. I eat here at least a few times a month, and while I was taking classes at KCC, this place was a frequent lunch spot. There's one guy that's always serving, and he can come off kind of standoffish and maybe even rude upon first impressions, but he's actually really nice and funny. We looked around for a clean table, found one, and sat down. I ordered the veggie pho and the soup came out piping hot. There were a LOT of veggies and noodles... The noodles were under-cooked and tough to bite into. The veggies weren't fresh as evidenced by the browning edges and leaves. However, the portions were extremely generous. If I was back in Kauai, I might give this place another chance if only to satiate my pho cravings. If you're from the mainland, you've probably learned to avoid strip mall restaurants next to laundromats and smoke shops. Well, set that bias aside in this case, because Pho Kauai actually has some delicious food. I stopped here on my way through Lihue because a local recommended it, and I wasn't disappointed. I had the chicken and shrimp over rice, and it was basically a large pile of great food for only $10. They had several other menu items that were even cheaper. Now, there are a couple drawbacks. Your maitre d' thrusts a menu into your hands and makes clear through his body language that he expects you not to dilly-dally with your order. But, he's efficient, I'll give him that. And, as I hinted in my opening sentence, you're not exactly dining in a swanky, tourist hotspot. I actually thought the whole strip mall complex was abandoned when I first entered the parking lot, until I saw a few people enjoying their recent purchases from the smoke shop as they waited for their laundry to finish. Overall, it's worth a stop if you're staying in Lihue. It's certainly cheaper and better than some of the touristy places near the beach, so if you're near the end of your Kauai vacation and looking to save on cash yet eat something better than snacks from a Chevron station or ABC store, make this one of your dining choices. read more

Pho Kauai is one of the best places for a good bowl of Pho. I order the same thing every time I go there. The green papaya salad and shrimp summer rolls are my favorite and the #31, seafood and pork pho is excellent. The service is not the best. I often help myself to the water pitcher and we always have to ask for share plates every time we go there. We go there weekly, but they still don't get that we need share plates for the summer rolls and salad. It is a hole in a wall. It's okay clean, but the food is tasty. Go there for your Vietnamese fix. And it's very inexpensive. 3 of us go there, we eat a lot and the bill is usually under $50. That's a bargain. read more

I wish we had discovered this restaurant earlier in our trip! We've already eaten there twice, got take-out once, and plan to go back for our last dinner. Every appetizer and meal was better than the one before. The iced tea is amazingly delicious. The gentleman who takes the orders may seem curt, but he really isn't. The owner is very nice, remembered us after one visit, is very easy to talk to. My 14-year-old granddaughter says she would eat there every meal, every day if she could. And...there's a bowling alley next door. Don't let the appearance of this strip mall prevent you from trying Pho Kauai. It's so worthwhile! read more

To be honest, I didn't care for their pho AT ALL. I got the combo rare beef, brisket, and meatball. The summer rolls were not great either (browned lettuce, dry pork, no herbs). The broth was a strange gray color and literally had a taste like pho, but with old dishwater or an old wet rag mixed in. I'm sure that's not what I was tasting, but it had something weird and unpleasant to it. Not fresh tasting. I hate to leave such a low review too... I try to give most local restaurants the benefit of the doubt. I also come from a huge community of Korean and Vietnamese, so I have high pho standards. read more

If ambiance is what you are looking for, this is not the place. If great tasty food that flies out of the kitchen, breaking the sound barrier, then Pho Kauai is for you. A group of six of us with very varying likes and dislikes arrived around 7pm on a Thursday and were seated straight away. Three of us ordered pho (different varieties) and the broth was great but my complaint is that my flank was about 98% fat. I scooped it out and onto a neighboring plate. So basically, the flank pho is really just broth, noodles, and whatever dressings you wish to add (mint, sprouts, jalepeno, etc). The lack of meat was really disappointing. The three non-pho eating diners were happy with their meals. Everyone cleaned, or nearly cleaned, their plates which is always a good sign. The restaurant was always busy with people popping in to collect their take away or having a quick sit-down meal. Overall, one of the better (and least expensive) meals we had during our visit to Kauai. read more
