I haven't tried enough pho places around T-Town to be able to say that I can pick the best one, but it's pretty hard to imagine that these guys aren't right at that level. They're certainly the best out of all the ones I've tried on Hilltop (and this is almost a little pho-town district). The storefront is nice and basic, and so is the dining room. The tables and chairs are clean but they're pretty beat up. The room is clean but simple--basic box with linoleum flooring. The staff hustle and bustle and the place always seems to be full, even when the street outside is quiet. They have a pretty good menu with all the usual suspects plus a couple extras here and there. They're justifiably well-known for their pho and banh mi. We tried both and both are excellent. The pho has all the bases covered--good fresh condiments, nice light chewy noodles, fresh meat. The broth is the key of course, and it has nice depth and complexity: great bone marrow base with nicely-balanced seasonings. The banh mi are excellent--bread is crusty on the outside, chewy on the inside. The meat is fresh, grilled very well, and full of flavor. The pickled bits have nice explosive flavor that works well with everything else. They're cheap and filling...pretty tough to imagine a better sandwich value in town. The fresh rolls are great, too, and we put away a couple pots of tea last week to wash these meals down. My mom has loved this place for years, though she can't bring herself to say the name as written. This was my go to pho place when I worked in Tacoma. I always ordered the small steak and brisket pho with extra jalapeño and cilantro. The broth is flavorful, the portions of meat and noodle were always generous. The staff was always friendly and at some point they used to give out eclairs after your meal but I think they stopped doing that. All in all I always had a great experience there. read more

Not much for atmosphere but very Friendly. Large orange room with tables. The broth is OK (tasty) but the streak isn't my favorite. Wife says it looks more like chicken in color. It is casual but you will see people in suits to very casual wear. I have been here a number of times and feel it is a Good choice. All soup same price no matter ingredients. Came here two times and both times, they messed up our order. First time I came, I had called in some take out since I was in the area. I ordered some stuff in addition to Pork Bahn mi sandwiches. They gave me beef. No big deal, sandwiches were decent and a good price. We came back again and wanted to try their pho. Both of us ordered the brisket pho, one regular bowl, one large bowl. They ended up giving us one large brisket bowl, one large tendon and brisket bowl. Noodles were not cooked very well... they were still underdone. Skimpy on the meat. While in Tacoma, especially on MLK you may hear alot of people saying PhoKing and you may see some ladies of the night offering PhoKing as a service but I never once thought I would pay for PhoKing. LOL (BTW, if you are uber white this may not make sense to you since you cannot pronounce Pho) The Pho King took over what was Vicala Market, I like Vicala but wasn't married to it. The best part is that the family who owned Vicala lived at Vicala and it was a litte too obvious. So back to the Pho King review. We walk in and are greeted and seated. Than they bring us their signature Pho King cream puffs which come free before each meal. I will break down everything by experience. -Cream Puffs 4 stars -Spring rolls 3.5 stars -Pho 2.5 stars The spring rolls were pretty good the sauce had a little too much hoison sauce for my liking but was still alright. Now the Pho, I mean I expected a little more since well, its the Pho King. It seems that they did not put all the traditional spices in the Pho, it wasn't too salty which was a huge plus but I could tell that not all spices were bathing in the broth. The meats were spot on and the tendon was probably a 2 star. A funny/annoying thing was water, we didn't get any so I asked for some water and he literally brought ME water no one else. LOL, I guess he did exactly what I wanted. Now I would call myself a connoisseur of Pho, some may just call it fat but I do know my way around some good Pho, this wasn't bad just not amazing, hard to review a place like this when I have had some real homemade Pho. I've almost given up on trying to find a decent pho establishment in Tacoma. All of the Vietnamese pho restaurants we were referred to (highly recommended) were not cutting it. They were either too oily or had weird aftertaste to them. I used to always pass Pho King but I never really gave it a thought up until this past weekend because I was craving pho. Honestly, this establishment was the deal breaker. My bf and I concluded that if Pho King sucked, there is no hope of ever finding a decent pho restaurant in the Tacoma/Lakewood etc. area. I'm glad we tried their pho. It was the only good broth we've had here in Washington. The broth was clear, light and not too oily. It was a little on the sweet side but it did hit the spot for me. Meat portion was really good as well. We also ordered 2 piece egg rolls and thai tea which were good. All in all, the whole meal cost us $16.xx which is a steal. You know what? Pho King is pretty pho king awesome! There are a ton of Vietnamese/Pho restaurants in the Tacoma area, but Hilltop's Pho King is one that I keep returning to because of it's location (close enough to walk to for lunch, and the uphill climb to get there from downtown provides a bit of a workout), great food, and reasonable prices. $6.25 for a 'regular' bowl of pho (with any combination of meat or non-meat protein) is a heck of a deal for a satisfying meal, and I usually add on an order of fresh spring rolls or crispy shrimp rolls for another $3. The banh mi sandwiches are also fantastic! Service is quick and friendly, and although the dining room is well-worn, it's comfortable and clean enough. They do tend to get pretty busy during the lunch rush, so getting there a bit before or after the 12:00-13:00 'peak' is advisable. Good stuff! read more

Pho in Tacoma? When you have that crazy craving for a bowl and you're in a new city, you whip out your yelp app and scout out where to go eat. Enter Pho King here in Tacoma. exit hunger pains. :) I arrived here in Tacoma after a morning of crazy cardio in Renton @ LA Fitness. It was only a 30 minute drive down the I-405 and subsequently the I-5; and I was starving. I had found a free gravel makeshift parking lot directly across the street from Pho King and I was ecstatic to find free parking for once, especially since Seattle loves to nickel and dime you. Parking on the street can be a crapshoot. It was about 12:00pm when I strolled into this joint on a lovely Monday morning. The traffic wasn't bad at all. The restaurant itself was buzzing with activity when I came and that's a good sign. The restaurant itself was clean and organized, stereotypically of what you would find anywhere else Vietnamese fare. The restaurant itself isn't large. I'd say it was a medium sized restaurant with approximately 10-12 tables for patrons who love Vietnamese cuisine. My time here was about 45 minutes to an hour and it was a good one. The overall experience was pleasant, positive, and quite nice. The service here was good, simple, and nice. Wouldn't have it any other way. Pho King is located at 1020 Martin Luther King Jr Way in the heart of Tacoma, WA. It's in a nice neighborhood that can be easily accessible to the I-5 and the I-705. They accept major credit cards, so that's always a good thing. The prices here we're very reasonable, especially with the large bowl of Pho only peaking out at $7.25. In Honolulu, you can expect to get one on average of $9 a bowl. So yes, it was cheap, so I asked for an extra side of noodles and the obligatory summer rolls to round out the meal. The wait wasn't long, at most 10 minutes, so I got to people watch while playing with my iPhone. There was a few hot spots of activity going on in the restaurant. The summer rolls were a pleasant surprise, dipped in the peanut sauce that was just so elegant it had to be good. Of course, a squirt of shiracha and I was good to go. The pho itself was decidedly good, but not grand. It was typical goodness that pho provides and it was good for lunch. I can't say that this place provided the best Pho, but it was decent and quite delicious. The service was good and fast. This was the perfect place to have lunch in before setting out to sightsee in Tacoma. If you love pho and have that daily craving that I do, please feel free to drive down here and have a lot of fun with pho. While this isn't the only joint that serves pho in Tacoma, it's one of the best here and the food and service is indicative of that. I would recommend Pho King for its simplicity and humble. I've seen this place once driving by and thought nothing of it, just another phó joint. I was trolling (not really) yelp and saw that "phó King" had very good reviews and the menu looked enticing. I gave them a shot today and here's how it went down. The storefront itself is really dirty and outdated. Sauce splatters on the walls and sticky tables. Not a pleasant place for an eating experience. The staff is okay, not awesome but not bad. The to-go orders take "phó ever" to get. Waited over 15 minutes for simple items, banh mí and fresh rolls, nothing cooked. (It was slow and no orders ahead of us. The group who came in after us and ordered dine-in received their food before us. (Phó and a stir-fry looking dish.) We got our food and went back home to eat it. The prices are very inexpensive. However, the food is super bland and lacking flavorful ingredients. My fresh rolls consisted of noodles that were not seasoned, some lettuce and bean sprouts with unseasoned fried tofu slices. (They really need to add cilantro, basil, or anything with taste.) They were pretty much tapioca sticks. The dipping sauce was terrible. Watery peanut butter. No trace of soy, garlic, ginger, or nothing. I used the plum sauce from the table instead. (Asked for a To-go ramekin for it-my elite senses told me I'd be needing it.) My hubby's banh mí sandwich was adequate. Proper ingredients and a decent size, considering the cost. It was a bit skimpy filling and protein wise, and the bread wasn't flaky chewy good like others. It tasted like there was mayo instead of pâté. We won't be back. I think people like this place for the "quirky" name. Thinking it's cute to give a positive review just to exclaim, "I LOVE PHÓ KING!" My go to pho place in Tacoma. Between this and Le Ca, I could have pho everyday. Just recently renovated, the place is cleaner and more inviting. I've always ordered their Special (with everything). Honestly, they loose a star because their service to refill your water and just generally checking up on you is a little lacking, worse when it's busy.
