I visited for lunch with friends, and thought the food could not be beat; apparently other think so too, it was a Monday and the place was packed to the brim. Pretty average pho place. The broth is not terribly flavorful and thin. The toppings are plentiful and the portion sizes are large, so it's got that going. Decor is quite nice. I would say that there are definitely better places for pho around and that this would probably rank at or near the bottom for pho places in the Ellicott City/Columbia area. read more

Swung by a few days ago, expecting a light lunch to get me through the day before a very late dinner. Was pleasantly surprised by the portions offered for even small bowls; taste of the broth and the meat cuts inside of the P10 were delicious! Service was quick; seated quick, ordered quick, once done you are able to walk up to the register and pay on your own time. Great food, banh mi are super good too! Not like your average meat, the lemongrass beef was super soft and yummy compared to other vietnamese restaurants and that's coming from a viet girl herself. Only reason for the 4 stars was because the server forgot a few things and my pho dac biet didn't have tendon or tripe. Our favorite restaurant. I order Pho most of the time, and here's tastes so good. Authentic, better than any other Pho places we've tried around before. Tried the appetizer: spring rolls, papaya salad, and beef in the grape leaves all tasted good. The fried chicken with tomato rice also tastes great! My husband and I were so happy to see a real Vietnamese restaurant opened up in Columbia (the other 2 in Columbia have been taken over by Korean owners; therefore not so authentic.) The food was good, but we were put off by the service. Firstly, the greeting was nil. My ph came out 15 minutes before my husband's order. I had already finished with my meal before his had arrived. This place serves a very good Pho with consistent flavor and content. This is an almost weekly lunch-time visit. The Pho is so good I haven't tried any other menu items, although their description is in some cases quite tempting. I might tip a little more than is customary, but it's nice to have the server remember our orders, especially with my aversion to onions. (I dine with a colleague, who gets the veggie Pho, and raves about it ... instead of the carnivore version that I prefer.) read more

Back in the area after selling An-Loi and a non-compete ten years ago. Since then An-Loi bastardized their pho with a Korean spin on things. This is the only legit pho in Hoco right now. Food was great and it's better than the parent company. The soup base was excellent. I think it was great value. For two people, the bill came to less than $16 including tax. Food was mediocre at best. Ordered the fried spring rolls but it was mostly filled with noodles and not much meat. Basically a fried roll of noodles. Also had the fried chicken over broken rice and was disappointed that the chicken was dry and didn't have much flavor. Seemed like the chicken was already made hours ago. Rice was decent. Lastly the Bun bo Hue was a big disappointment as it was too salty, not spicy enough, also the lemon grass over powered the broth. The interior was nice and the service quick but food lacked Vietnamese flavors. Definitely was let down as most of the reviews seemed good. Best pho spot in Columbia. I assure you that the broth tastes fresher than any other place. I recommend their pad thai and fruit drinks. Location is in a small strip on Dobbin Rd. Lots of places to shop nearby. Reasonable prices. Great service, kind staff -- especially the lady who wears glasses! Weekdays are significantly less busier than say Saturday or Sunday. Good, but very oily. Noodle and vegetarian noodle stir fry options had the same codes next to them despite the differences, which I think messed up our waiter even though we ordered vegetarian. I think the pho here is mediocre. My basic test of that is, without Sriracha, without hoisin sauce, without basil and sprouts and jalapeños and lime, how much would I enjoy eating the entire bowl of broth the way it is? By that standard, I don't think Pho La Cay does very well. The pho is bland. It doesn't taste of star anise and cinnamon, or even cilantro for that matter. It tastes kind of like meat and noodles in a watery beef broth. The broth isn't translucent either. If you dump sriracha and hoisin all over it then I suspect it tastes kind of like any other pho you do that to. read more

A legit Vietnamese restaurant in Columbia. Food taste almost like home cooking (of course nothing compares to mom's cooking). I've been here several times and it is consistently delicious. Prices have gone up since they originally opened, hopefully it stays steady and prices don't go up too high as affordable and healthy food is hard to find. Ingredients are fresh. Service is quick. Don't expect service to check up on you every five minutes; they'll take your order, provide your food, and check back towards the end of your meal. If you need something you can easily get their attention. Honestly, I don't mind that. I like to enjoy my food without the constant checkup (I know that's good service, but just my preference.) They are very friendly and you generally get seated right away. I'm happy this place has come to Columbia and hope they are here to stay for a long time. Clean space, parking is pretty easy. I have eaten here before, but tonight would be my last night visiting that restaurant. First of all, I blame myself I didn't realize they close at 8 o'clock. We got there around 7:20. Anyway the waitress was friendly, that's about it. The food, not so good. I ordered a combination dinner, and the pork chops came out dry and burnt. My other party ordered a soup, and most of the meat in the soup was all fat Napkins? Cheap paper napkins, which really didn't do the trick. Anyway, I guess it got close to 8 o'clock which was closing time. I get it when it's time to close you want to go home. But to start putting up all the chairs on top of the tables all around you as your trying to eat, I feel is rude. I really wasn't planning on staying past 8 o'clock. I wouldn't do that to them. They could've put the chairs on the tables after everyone left. It's like telling you get the hell out of here. Guess what it did the trick! read more

Vegetarians: They have tofu summer rolls, a vegan broth if you want pho, and tofu bahn mi (sandwich ) in spicy lemongrass or plain (only $5!). Last time I went I ordered some kind of vegan noodle stir fry with a lot of fresh vegetables, tofu, and crushed peanuts. Pretty good! There may be more but these are the things I've ordered. I also had the coconut juice, which is sweetened but delicious and comes with pieces of coconut in it that you can eat after. Came here early afternoon. I got the vegetable pho (P7) with vegetable broth and I really enjoyed it. The food came out pretty quickly and service was good overall. Pho La Cay was a bit hard to find since it was hidden within some business office park. The restaurant looked very modern and clean. My friends and I were greeted with several servers; however, we felt that our food was taking a bit longer than we had thought it would. I got the pho with the beef brisket, tripe, and soft tendon. My friend got the same as well but asked for no cilantro and they were more than happy to accommodate. We also ordered a Maryland Crispy chicken because we were intrigued by the name and wanted something to share as well. The crispy chickens as indeed very crispy and the sauce that comes along with it was a perfect combination. The rice that's laid under the chicken was a reddish color; but, it did not have a particular taste. The soup for the pho was a little bit on the salty side, however, it was still delicious.
