I can't believe I haven't reviewed this place before. Whenever I am not feeling well and all I need is broth, they are my go to spot. I haven't been feeling well for a couple days and all I wanted was broth. I went to work today and decided to grab some on my way home. I called in the order over the phone and was told it would only take 2 to 3 minutes. By the time I had arrived there it was, sitting on the bar. I walked in and headed towards the back like the sign suggested to do for food pickup. I was greeted by a gentleman and he quickly asked if I had the broth and I said yes. I paid and was out of there in less than 2 minutes. Now sitting in my car sipping my broth awaiting for my belly to feel better. Love this place! I really enjoy the interior design of this ship inspired restaurant. The service was phenomenal! And the food was top notch! I love seen this place in passing but never went inside. This was the most disappointing Vietnamese take out I've ever had...if not the 2nd most disappointing takeout meal I've ever had at all. The Hu Tieu Mi should have had shrimp, quail eggs, squid, fish balls and pork for $13.95 based on the website. The price has increased to $16.95 and they did not care about the discrepancy...so it's more expensive and then they left out squid, fish balls AND quail eggs in my order. The shrimp was pathetic, mealy in texture, no flavor and they didn't devein any of the shrimp. Absolutely trash. The seafood eggrolls were supposed to be $8.95 but the restaurant told me that wasn't right either and it's $10.95. The eggrolls were supposed to be shrimp, squid, and crab meat....tasted like pork mixed with some seafood. Finally portion sizes were small. Took my parents here for lunch and I have to say, the place was completely empty except for one other table. That being said, there was also just one person working but somehow did take a little bit of time to get his attention so we could get our check. The restaurant it fairly large, with an indoor koi pond right when you walk in. Appears they might have some live band at some point because there is a stage area that's set up with instruments and sound equipment. Plenty of tables, booths and bar seating. In regards to the food, they were out of two rice dishes (and of course both were what my dad wanted) so he settled on Broken Rice Grilled Pork Chop (Cơm Tấm Sườn Nướng) which he said was not the best-- meat was dry, rice was not cooked all the way. My mom had Grilled Pork with Vermicelli (Bún Thịt Nướng) and felt the flavor of the pork was good, but overall the fish sauce was too sweet. I tried Spicy Lemongrass Beef Noodle (Bún Bò Huế), which had plenty of meat and noodles with an overall flavorful broth-- it's not the best I've had, but I would have it again in the future. read more

Protein portions were tiny, the broth was lacking flavor, and there was only a single host/server in the entire place.

Service is sketch. I would say they don't care much about customer service but I think it's more like a lack of attention to detail. The food is pretty good, particularly their fried pork chops and Chinese broccoli! It's a convenient stop next to Lotte and we go back for dishes like these but not the more traditional Vietnamese dishes. You may just need to overcome the cheesy interior and sometimes the obnoxious techno music (even during the day). Take out could also be the way to go :-) read more

I had read a review a few months back about their Napoleon Sizzling Beef and thought it sounded interesting and looked good. I mean generally speaking, you can't go wrong with a sunny side egg, beef, and sausage. I couldn't tell what sauce they used. I asked the server and he didn't really say other than there was a marinade. I guess he didn't want to give it away. He did say there was hot sauce which I generally don't like. The dish came with a small baguette and a ramekin of soy sauce. I'm not sure if the soy sauce was supposed to be mixed in. I didn't use it. The portion of the dish was small for $15. Definitely not filling as a meal. Although I will say it was definitely a unique concoction. I think I would have liked it better if they used a different type of marinade. I also ordered the Fried Chicken Wings in Butter Sauce. It took awhile to prepare and came out after the Napoleon Sizzling Beef. The wings were oddly shaped and much smaller compared to the wings I've had at other establishments. I appreciated that they threw in some veggies, but the wings didn't have much flavor. I've had wings in butter sauce at other Vietnamese restaurants that tasted better. I noticed there was an aftertaste too after I was done eating. I had a very early dinner. I got there around 4:20. There was only one other table filled at that time. My server, David, only came by to check on me one time towards the end when I was almost done with my meal. Considering it wasn't busy, he should have come by to check on me while I was eating my sizzling beef to see if I needed anything. I couldn't decide if I liked the decor of the restaurant. COCKTAILS: Vietnamese Coffee Martini - I asked the bartender to make this custom drink and it is amazing. All Vietnamese restaurants should use their Vietnamese coffee with condensed milk to make an elevated espresso martini. It is strong and sweet the perfect combo for a delicious cocktail. We also ordered buttery nipple shots like back in college and it was the perfect sweet ending to our night. FOOD: Ordered the grilled pork banh mi sandwich for $5.95 and the bread was super crusty, great grilled flavor on the pork and crunchy pickled toppings. I loved the jalapenos on the side so I could add a little at a time in case it got too spicy. SERVICE/ATMOSPHERE: A+. They checked on us often throughout our 3 hour experience. On Saturday nights they have karaoke that starts at 10pm and this is my only complaint - it's so loud it hurts my ears. We usually can only scream at each other for about an hour and then we have to leave because I start to lose my voice. The only PHO restaurant in Ellicott City. The PHO portions are the smallest in DMV. Never had a large PHO with only a small amount of noodles. The large portion doesn't even match PHO 75s small portions. Sometimes you get basil sometimes you don't. Their telephone etiquette is hit or miss depending if you're lucky the girls are working that day. My biggest gripe is when we call to let them know something is wrong they hang up on you. There is never a manager present to speak with. We found a black and white hair in the broken rice and wanted to politely let the manager know but there was no manager to speak with. The man who answers the phone just hangs up on you when you're the customer. I think they get enough party and banquets to cover so they do not value the regulars that walk in. So unfortunate, since this could be the best PHO place in Howard County, Maryland. Yum!! What a delicious restaurant that is very bright with lots of interesting things on the walls. Also lots of TVs and I'm sure this would be a great place to watch football on Sunday's while eating Pho and other amazing Vietnamese dishes. Came here with a friend after we both were craving Pho on a late night mission and they didn't disappoint! The 1st visit we had a very sweet you g lady(Tam?) who recommended several options that were perfect. There were ample portions and everything just flowed- didn't feel that you were missing anything. I realized the eggplant was oily so I stopped eating. We also ordered the calamari for an appetizer but didn't get it until after our main entree. We always had to ask for a waiter to refill our water or to ask for our check. It wasn't busy but our waiter didn't check up on us to make sure we were okay. I am not sure if I would go back. The summer roll was just okay but it came with a thick & tasty hoisin dipping sauce with chopped peanuts. The pho came loaded with plenty of meat - beef slices, meatball, tender tendon & tripe. The broth could have been a bit richer but otherwise , it was flavorful enough. The noodles though were just a bit undercooked. What's up foodie fams! Was in the Ellicott City, MD area shopping for some snacks and drinks and got hungry. Found this really cool Vietnamese bar and grille place called Viet Pearl. This place is vibrant and spacious with seats like a mini stadium....ok not that big but there are a lot of seating tables for a bar. As I walk in, I'm greeted with a warm welcome. My host and waiter, who was masked and gloved up, led me to my table. I walked by a small fountain that had koi swimming around, neat! On to the nomz. A lot of people hear Vietnamese food and typically think pho, which is justified...pho is amazing! However, this place not only has pho, but other Vietnamese cuisines. So I ordered the beef stew with egg noodles, Chinese broccoli stir fried with garlic, and a special they had called Napoleon Sizzling beef. The beef stew had a nice beefy sweetness combination to the soup profile. There are beef cubes and beef tendon for the protein needs. The egg noodle is a different take to the rice noodles in pho, being less smooth but with a bit more snappy texture. Reminds me of the Chinese wonton noodle soups in the authentic Cantonese style places. I do eat my veggies and the Chinese broccoli was stir fried to perfection. Crunchy stems and soft leaves, it's like a rabbit's dream come true. Not too oily, not too soaked in water, just right. The tomato slices were cute too. The Napoleon Sizzling beef was something different that I've never had. This dish looks like a breakfast dish that says open 24/7 with the egg and sausage. The slices of beef cut was tender and juicy. The sausage was crispy and soft. The egg was sunny and runny. Besides the ingredients, the flavor profile was monstrous. However this was seasoned was seasoned well and beyond! Only thing I recognized was either a Worcester sauce or maybe a Maggi sauce variant combined with the mad chef's creation. Though I'm saddened there was not enough portion wise, maybe just me, the taste was enlightening. Yeah, this was a fave of the night. I happened to find this beautiful place on a snow day, when all the other restaurants in the area are closed. There's something to be said about a business with strong work ethic like that. This place is so cute, they make it look like a little Vietnamese vacay. When you walk in, you see a koi pond, a sail boat and lots of grass decorations. They have a full bar. Ok now to the food. I got the Bun Bo Hue, spicy lemon grass soup with noodles, beef, shrimp cake and pork knuckle. You get a lot of meats, and they are all tender and delicious. The noodles are soft, but I like it that way. The broth is flavorful, but just a little bit too spicy for my taste. I drank 5 glasses of water to finish it. So to offset the spiciness in my mouth, I got the fried ice cream. It was good, but I can tell that it was not really ice cream battered and fried to order. It was ice cream rolled in egg roll shell crumbles, and topped with chocolate, nuts and whipped cream. I still liked it though. So after trying the hot pot place a couple of doors down, I decided to try Viet Pearl for pho! For some reason these two people that I spend most of my time with have a specific liking for Asian cuisine! So with that said, Viet Pearl is located in a small strip mall in Ellicott City, Md! This strip is filled with Asian restaurants as well as an international grocery market! This place plays the part! It has a very nice bar that is stocked with at least middle shelf alcohol; could be top shelf but I didn't have any cocktails so I'm not certain. When we arrived the place was completely empty! So I was wondering if this place was any good! My guy and I were craving pho and it was a cold evening! However, by the time we left, it was starting to fill up with people! We were greeted by a nice young man who seated us and took our orders! We both ordered soft drinks and a bowl of beef pho; flank steak and fat brisket! The pho came with all the usual accoutrements: onions basil bean sprouts, sriracha and hoisin sauce! One of my tell tales is if I don't have to add a lot to the broth...this was not the case! The broth was just ok...I've had better! The meat was a little tough also!! So to me the pho was just ok! I had higher hopes in this area! As far as the service goes...it was alright! My boyfriend asked for their public wifi and the waitress lied and said they didn't have any wifi! But other than that, the experience was mid! Nothing that wowed us and nothing that disappointed us! Probably the worst experience I've ever had. Ordered one appetizer and two entrees on a not-at-all-busy Friday. Appetizer was summer rolls and sub-par. However, the reason for the 1-star is the service. First entree came after 30-min of ordering, and the grilled pork was very cold- like it had been taken out of the fridge for it to warm up at room temperature for the past half hour. When I told them, the waitress kindly took the order back and told me a new one would come. But when I inquired about the Pho I ordered she said it would take 10-min which in of itself is odd given how long ago we ordered. But another 30-min goes by and I get no updates. At this point honestly I was over it- told the waitress I wanted to just close out and get food elsewhere. She apologized but again offered no explanation for why it was taking a full HOUR for Pho and a grilled pork rice dish. I was here on Tuesday night, the food was not as fresh or tasty as it used to be on weekend. I feel like these are the left over food of the week. I ordered the seafood crispy noodle but the shrimps did not look fresh and didn't taste right. There were more cabbage than the actual seafood in the dish. It was 3 shrimps, 2 mushroom and everything else was cabbage. The weekday food is totally different than the weekend food. It seems like they were out of food and drinks. The appetizer doesn't seem cook well also. My friend order beer but 2 beer in the menu were were out of order, and the girl didn't know. She came back to us twice and said "sorry we are out of that". It was 7pm Tuesday night and everything seems out of stock. The girl who was taking care of our table gave us the appetizer together with our main dishes all at once . We were suprised and we thought appetizer should come before the main dishes. Today experience was not as good as it used to be. Very mediocre food and service. This restaurant seems to have an identity crisis. Is it a restaurant? Is it a karaoke bar? Is it a sports bar? I don't know, and neither does it. There are no fewer than 9 tv screens and two projector screens. 1990s-2000s club music was playing at 5:30 pm. It was stimulus overload. I went for dinner in a restaurant and I wound up having 20-year-old flashbacks. Service was just ok. I was waited on promptly at arrival, food was served in a reasonable amount of time, but nobody ever checked to see if everything was ok. I ordered bun cha sai gon and specifically asked if it came with spring rolls. The menu description did not include them, though it is common that they come with this dish so I asked. I was told no, so I ordered some separately. Turns out, the entree DID come with them so I had a whole heck of a lot of spring rolls. I did not raise a stink about this because it was happy hour and my second order cost under $3, so I just dealt with it. But, a waiter should know they come with the entree OR ask the kitchen. I would probably not return, as food wasn't good enough to override the weird atmosphere. read more
