I have been here twice mainly because I live so close.. within walking distance. There are so many pho places on the island so it can be a bit overwhelming to choose one to eat at. I would recommend this one. I'll start with the food. The meat tastes really fresh and the broth is some of the best I have had here. Also I'd recommend their summer rolls with peanut sauce...soo good! The restaurant is clean, price is good, and the service is friendly. The atmosphere is calm and quiet, almost too quiet though! It seemed there was no other noise in the restaurant other than my conversation. I found myself whispering to my girlfriend for no reason other than I felt I should be quiet too. When I realized I was whispering I stopped, looked around, and noticed the Vietnamese waiter who looked about 16 was standing in a corner looking at our table, almost as if he was waiting for my next command. Good little local place in Kakaako for Vietnamese food in a pinch. This is my favorite place for bun rieu or crab noodle soup. Sadly, I didn't order pho. I wasn't craving it at the time since I've gotten sick. What I was craving though, was vermicelli. First time coming here, I was curious. My friends drove into the underground structure to park and we all went into the restaurant. It was a nice place, and it's definitely clean. During that time, the place was empty except for one table. We sat, take a look at the menu, and most of the items are about eight or nine dollars.. But I didn't mind so much because I wanted to try. The vermicelli, also known as rice noodles, or in Vietnamese, bún. I ordered the #35. Grilled Pork with spring rolls (the fried, crunchy kind). It was about $8.95. (I don't know about the past reviewer Ashley O, but I'm pretty sure it was grilled pork... since barbecue pork was around #38..) We waited about 5-10 minutes ('cause I went to the restroom, and mine wasn't ready, but my friend's pho was (I had to pass the kitchen, and it looked like what most Asian restaurant kitchen's would look like, kinda gross, but it's okay)). It was a nice big bowl, and it looked delicious. The bowl had the salad below and to the side, cold rice noodle, grilled pork, and spring rolls with a dash of peanuts tossed all around, and on the side of this bowl, was the sauce. Being all excited, I took some noodles to test out the sauce. Sadly, I barely tasted anything. The sauce was not the sauce. Sorry to say, I poured it in and I barely tasted anything. Slightly sweet, not spicy at all. It was mostly like slightly sweet water. Upside, I liked noodles, and I ate it anyway and was full. The best part of the dish was the spring rolls and grilled pork. That was the tastiest. I've had better dishes like these elsewhere. (Ha Long Pho Noodle House) Total with tax was around $9.33. It'll have to be two stars for now, and until I come back, I'll get the pho and let's see if it deserves a better rating. read more

The grilled pork chops had massive servings. I ate it for 3 meals! For about $11 that's not bad at all! And it was really yummy too.

So I was in the area and was super hungry. My friend suggested that we take a break and find something yummy. We ended up parking in front of Pho Nam and ordered oxtail pho. SUPER BOMB! The soup by itself tasted amazing and there was lots of yummy oxtails. I bean sprouted and hoisin/cock sauced the heck out of it and murdered my bowl. I ate here last night with some friends and we had four kids 3 years and under with us. There was plenty room for our large party and without hesitation, the waitress suggested the bbq chicken for my kids to eat. I thought for a second, my kids aren't huge meat eaters... Usually this doesn't pan out for us. But the woman seemed so certain that it would be a hit, I took a chance. WOW! She was right! I have NEVER seen my kids inhale food like they did last night! Glad that we're able to eat Pho today, considering most restaurants were closed because of the storm. The pho at PhoNam has the best oxtail Pho. The meat is so juicy and tender, amount of meat and noodles are equally proportioned, the broth is flavorful, and the veggies are fresh. I absolutely love basil and bean sprouts with my Pho and they give you a generous amount for your meal. Customer service is great, friendly and accommodating. Ample parking, metered but free on the weekends or validated parking. Definitely will return again. read more

Friendly staff, consistently delicious food keeps me coming back for more! On the corner of Imperial Plaza, the atmosphere is cozy and there's a small tv above the counter to keep you entertained if you please. I always order the thin steak pho and BBQ chicken with spring rolls and noodles and I love the broth of the pho! I ask for extra basil, and they pile it on! The staff is super polite and accommodating and I never feel rushed even if it is crazy busy! I have done take out during lunch time and the place is bustling with customers! Horrible experience. Went in for a party of one (just myself) and then when I walked in it took about 4minutes for someone to notice and seat me. Mind you I was the only one there. Ordered crab meat with rice noodle soup, and spring rolls. The spring rolls were fresh, hot and overall great. The soup however, I could not eat. There are tomatoes and I get really bad gastritis flare ups when I eat it. To drink I got the Thai ice teA, extra sweet. TeA was good, but I've had better elsewhere. So if my waitress had come around to check on me, she would've known I couldn't eat the soup. Instead she continued taking to one of her customers. She didn't even come around when my water was empty. When I walked up to the register to pay, she didn't even ask if it was okay or anything. Obviously, I did not tip them. It was so frustrating I didn't even complain. I hope she figured out something was wrong when she cleaned up the table and the whole soup was left untouched . Sad thing is she looked my way a few times and didn't bother to say or do anything. If I could put zero stars on yelp, I would. When you have life threatening conditions associated with food... I''ve ordered the seafood cake noodle #62 take out many times, but today was very disappointing, they were not cake noodles,, barely fried, the sauce was very thin, and the only seafood was 4 shrimp and scattered pieces of sliced squid, no shell fish, no scallops, no octopus, just a lot of overcooked broccoli over sloppy noodles, I wish they would have said they were out of that menu item for the day, paid $15.63 plus tip, not likely to go back read more

Sadly, this used to be one of my favorite pho place but the qualtiy and flavor have suffered recently. I used to rate it highly and gave it several visits to redeem itself before I finally gave in to the fact that is just wasn't as good as it used to be. "Helofonam" - The one word phone greeting from one of my favorite ladies in the Kaka'ako neighborhood... I used to frequent this place too much. It was very easy to just go down the elevator when I lived in the Imperial Plaza Building. I now go once or twice a month during the week when I am too lazy to cook for myself. The meat ball pho is probably one of my favorite things ever. I do not know how they make the meat balls so smooth, but they are oddly smooth. Regardless, I like the way that they taste. The Pho is large in portion, and the noodles are wrapped separately in addition to some greens and bean sprouts. I always order the BBQ chicken rolls (#6). Those things dipped in the provided peanut sauce would be on my last meal's menu. I have ordered various other dishes here, but nothing on the reg like the meatball soup and BBQ chicken rolls. I have had the Garlic Chicken on a few occasions, but be forewarned that there is a ton of garlic in that dish. One time, I ate this before heading out for the night, and I was kicked out of a taxi by the driver because I reeked so bad of garlic. He was an NYC transplant to the island, and he was all like, "jesus, what did you eat? You got to get out of here. I am not going to be able to get any fares for the rest of the damn night." I am not even kidding on this one. He told me, "I'm sorry, but I cannot have you in this cab. You smell awful." I was not upset when he kicked me out, as I only had a couple of blocks to walk. In his defense, the overwhelming garlic smell was offensive. I knew it was too much when I was eating it, but it did taste great. It literally looks like they took one of those small jars of garlic you get at the grocery, deep fried it, and dumped it on the chicken that tastes as if it too was cooked in garlic oil. Stinky. Great place for takeout. Somehow everything takes only 10 minutes. Dining in is not that great. I went before they closed one time at ~8:50 PM. They awkwardly shut the television off at 9:30PM in a passive aggressive manner that suggested, "No more television for you. Finish eating and get out." Lastly, I saw Scott Caan in here one time. Took my mom here for lunch at first there was only one or two other tables occupied but within minutes the whole place was packed. We had the rare lemon beef salad it was very good and different from others I had because they use pickled daikon and shredded daikon. We also got the chicken make your own rolls with peanut sauce. The chicken was slightly overcooked and tough but overall it was very good. There was no mint or basil for the rolls which would have made it even better. I had a Thai iced tea and my mom drink water. Just the two dishes was enough we were very full and the total was $35. I will definitely come back here again because it's near my job read more

If you guys love short ribs, Pho nam is def the place. Out of all the pho and other meat. Short ribs is the prime and all I get there is that. Oh yea and there ice cream GREEN TEA is amazing! It's like matcha green tea. Sweet and thick! They also have Thai tea as well! Drink not ice cream. My usual combo is Thai Tea and Bomb ass Kalbi and end it with Matcha Ice Cream. I had the food yesterday and it was delicious. I had spicy lemongrass. So I brought my brother today. The summer rolls were good and so was the strawberry smoothie. My brother's food was pre-cooked and ok to eat. It was BBQ pork. I had Garlic Chicken. My food was raw in the middle and rotten smelling. I had taken a bite of chicken and gave my therapy dog a peice. Before I stopped eating on the second bite because it tasted rotten. I cut a different chicken cutlet and took a picture of the raw meat. Then a picture of the peice that was cut for my next bite. How can a place go from really good to I am going to get sick off this, over night. If I get sick from a bite of rotten chicken then I know where to point the finger. Was pretty average, to maybe below average pho. I was excited to try it since it was so close to where I live. I think I'll give them another chance to see if they're any better, but I ordered the rare beef pho. The beef was pretty grey and chewy, and the broth was not so great. I have a love affair with pho that has been going on for years. I went to Pho Nam after a recommendation from a friend and was severely disappointed. The only good thing about the place was that it was fairly clean...much cleaner than other pho places Ive been to and the staff was friendly. Me and my boyfriend ordered two iced coffees, an order of spring rolls, and two bowls of the pho. The coffee was weak and not sweet enough...the spring rolls were just OK, and the pho was terrible. The broth didnt even taste like traditional pho broth. There weren't any hints of star anise or fish sauce that I could taste. It sort of reminded me of an oxtail soup base...which is good if that's what you want to eat. There wasn't a whole lot of meat and noodles for what you pay for ($7.95) just a lot of generic broth. Very pricey and food definitely not memorable. I wont be back! read more

My absolute FAVORITE Vietnamese food. I always order the same two items: either the #17 ($7.95) which is beef Pho or the #36 ($8.95) which is BBQ chicken, spring roll, over vermacelli noodles. I am never disappointed. The Pho is flavorful and plentiful, I'd even just drink the broth in a cup its so dang good! It comes in a large and x-large size, but large is more than enough. Pho Nam is one of my favorite Vietnamese restaurants in Honolulu. The food is tasty, portions plentiful, veggies and herbs are fresh, prices reasonable, and service fast and friendly. There's validated parking in the building. The ambiance is a little lacking but I think that's a minor shortcoming unless you're dining out for a special occasion. read more
