Found this little gem on my way to JFK. The bun Bo hue here was wonderfully fragrant with just the right amount of lemongrass. The noodles were cooked to perfection and the broth full of flavor. Stopped in for lunch on a whim and was pleasantly surprised to be welcomed by the owner "K" as he called himself and helped us order the right beef phô for my delicate palate, there are several versions on the menu. I ordered the summer rolls with avocado which were very good and made fresh, we also got the raw beef Phô which was loaded with sirloin sliced razor thin and a perfect compliment to the broth. We ordered a side of the bone broth to go as we had some extra beef and noodles left over that made a great snack later on. We stopped at this restaurant, looking for an authentic Vietnamese menu. It is always a challenge to peruse a new menu, figure out what's what. The owner came to greet us, and guided us through. we had a wonderful experience, from service to food and conversations. It's been about two years since my last visit to Pho Ninh Kieu. The restaurant has recently moved one door down from its original location. The new space is an improvement, as it's bigger and has more tables, but it also looks very similar to the old location. The lights are different I think, but everything else seems to be transplanted from the original restaurant, which is fine. The restaurant remains comfortable and attractive. The staff is unchanged, and continue to be friendly and welcoming. I ordered the large House Combo Pho (Pho Dac Biet), which seems to offer a bit of everything you can get in any of the other pho on the menu. It comes with the usual sprouts, basil and jalapeno on the side. I enjoyed it, but it honestly wasn't the best pho I've had. The broth could have been richer and I don't believe all the ingredients supposedly included with the combo where in the bowl. In fairness, I asked them to omit the tripe, so perhaps there was some miscommunication that was my fault. I would certainly try it again. I was disappointed that the complimentary peanuts that used to be served were no longer there, or at least they weren't served to me. Maybe it was an oversight. Also, the prices have increased more than I would have expected, but not to an unreasonable point, and there's a now 3% charge for using a credit card. None of that's a deal breaker though. I'll certainly visit Pho Ninh Kieu again and try some of the dishes I used to order, and see how they've held up. read more

Ordered: Large P1 House Combo Pho (~$14): beef bone broth, rice noodles & eye of round, flank, brisket, beef ball, tendon & tripe Aya's take: I was feeling a bit under the weather and figured some pho would help bring me back to life a bit. Now let me just say, the Pho was soothing, delicious, and I enjoyed the various cuts of meat in this combo version. If I was solely rating the food, it's a 4/5. However, the service was extremely disappointing. I initially ordered a different bowl (P3) and asked to add meatballs to it. Not even a minute later, I noticed the P1 already had meatballs so it didn't make sense for me to pay an additional $4. I quickly changed my order (like I said within the minute). The waiter (a little flustered) went to the kitchen immediately and informed the cooks so there was no confusion. When I received my check, I pointed out that they forgot to remove the extra side of meat from the bill. The waiter came back to me three times trying to convince me the bill was right instead of speaking to his manager about it. Finally the manager came; I explained the situation and he removed the charge. I put my credit card down to pay and the manager now tells me they don't take AmEx. The check holder which might receipt came in literally has the AmEx logo on it. I the offered to pay with Apple Pay to which the manager said he doesn't take it because "the machine is old". The machine was one I see frequently and has no issues accepting Apple Pay at other places. There was also a sticker on the counter with the accepted credit cards. He asked if I had Venmo and although not my first or second option, I reluctantly agreed. He then gave me a new receipt with an added "bank fee" charge of 3%. This was an insane way of making up for that $4 charge to begin with. It seemed like they just wanted to come out ahead when in reality, I was so turned off by how they handled the whole situation. Point, counterpoint. My mom and I agreed on Asian, and decided to scout around this area to see what she might like. Our first stop was a winner to her, and so Pho is added to my year-end Yelp! Point: Not a large place, but very nicely lit for a sit-down meal. Decent number of tables for seating despite being the size of a take-out venue. Counterpoint: My mother wanted to take out instead, so I cannot fully speak to the service aspect. The man at the counter was confused by what I was trying to order. I asked at one point about what is considered an authentic Vietnamese dish and fortunately the owner came by to answer. (He then tried to push me to change my non-Vietnamese soup to a pho. My mom asked for the wonton soup. She gets it. Because mom .) Point: My mom thoroughly enjoyed her sauteed shrimp and vegetables. She thought the soup was unusual in scent and color (very pale compared to Chinese soup) but loved the taste and so do I. Counterpoint: The dish was half lettuce and cucumber. Too imbalanced in that aspect. My fried rice was said to be authentic. The chicken was 5% too dry (Very slight) but 95% not flavorful enough. Can't really speak to the beef and shrimp chunks in the mixed dish, but overall the fried rice was eh. Ultimately, this place doesn't do it for me, but my mother is adding it to her list, so there's a balance in my star rating. I can imagine the pho here is the main attraction, so I may be back if I should ever hanker for that dish. read more

Unexpected dinner enroute home. Place was packed on a Monday evening. Seems like a family run business as the matriarch delivered some of our food and an older man asked about our meal. We had an order of bao buns with pork - nice fresh bun with fresh veg sliced incredibly thin, and cilantro. Had a Vietnamese cold coffee for the remaining drive and the family had two small beef pho and two large beef pho. Wifey and I were in the mood for some kind of noodle soup and, as usual, Yelp didn't let us down. We decided on Pho Ninh Kieu since it was local and had great reviews. We were seated immediately and other than the family members working there there was only one other table being used...though by the time we were done there were four other groups enjoying dinner. The place is kind of small, but the food is not! We started with a couple iced teas while looking over the menu and decided to start with Summer Rolls and Grilled pork buns. The appetizers were incredible, but we should have only ordered one since the Pho bowls were huge. For our entrees Wifey ordered sliced chicken Pho and I had the shrimp Pho. We got the large sizes and there was a LOT. The waiter saw me reach for the sriracha, but asked me to taste the broth first. I did, and it was really flavorful and delicious. I did add sriracha as I love the flavor and wanted a little more spice, but if it wasn't there the meal still would have been great. I love finding amazing local restaurants and we've tried to do this even more during COVID. We just moved to the area and decided to try this place, as we love Vietnamese food. Terrible experience. We arrived before another party, and, as it turns out, both we and they ordered appetizer buns. Even though we placed our order first, the waiter brought a plate of buns to the other table. I asked if ours was ready. He said no, and then told me that the other party comes to dine every week. I responded, "So you have preferred customers? So they get their food before everyone else?" Then he shifted excuses and said that the other party ordered before us. He said he was going to prove it to me, and went to the computer. I guess the computer showed that he was wrong, because his next excuse was that their buns were faster to make because they were fried, and ours were not. If that's true, why didn't he just say that to begin with? How is it relevant that they are repeat customers? The rest of our food--bowls of pho--came out, which were mediocre at best. The broth is not what I would expect of a good pho noodle soup. We'll search for another Vietnamese restaurant to go to next time. read more

It's a small shop, but the food here is absolutely delicious!! I've tried their banh mi, pho, vermicelli noodle dishes, grilled pork rice dishes and nothing ever misses! The banh mi is perfectly crunchy and flavorful, with the meat being cooked to perfection. The spring rolls are crunchy and perfectly fried, pork has the perfect marinade and is tender and juicy, so pairing those two things with either the noodles or rice based dish, it's a perfect balance of everything. There's only a few tables, so you may have to wait. It also has more small table options, so going in a group, you will most likely have to wait. Staff is very friendly and attentive. Came here the other day with my mom and my boyfriend to get some pho and rice platters. The food was amazing and stayed consistent with my previous visits. My boyfriend and my mom tried the shrimp spring rolls and they really liked the peanut sauce. My only complaint would be their service. From my previous visits, it has always been fast and timely but this past visit has been a bit disappointing. I'm not reducing the rating since it was a one-time issue, but I ordered Thai iced tea and it didn't come until I was almost finished with my meal. After we got all our food, I was finding the right time to get the staff's attention to follow up on my drink. He was always busy accommodating other customers or looking down. It was difficult to get his attention. While we were eating, he seated some new guests and took their orders. I saw another staff member making Thai iced tea and thought he would bring it to my table, but instead, he brought the drink to the newly seated guests. I was able to get his attention then and ask about my Thai iced tea. He very quickly said, "Yes I know, we are making it next". I was a bit upset by this interaction because if he was aware that I also ordered Thai iced tea, why didn't he serve it to me first? I have been waiting for so long and I am basically almost finished with my entree. If he genuinely forgot my order, I would rather him be honest rather than push it off as though he was aware but served the other guests first. From all my other restaurant experiences, I normally get my ordered drink BEFORE my entrees come out. When I got my drink, I was basically almost done with my food and I had to chug down the drink, which made it not as enjoyable. We originally meant to go to the falafel place in the same plaza as this restaurant but they were closed for some reason. We were lucky to try this place as we now have a new pho go to! We both ordered the house special pho (with everything included) in large size and an order of fried spring rolls (should be the first appetizer on the menu).
