I think when it comes to eating foods other than what you grew up with, you tend to judge all ethnic cuisines by your original taste of that particular culture. So, all Pho is judged by the first places I ever it at. That being said, Pho Place holds its own on several fronts, while letting me down on just a couple. First, the good. Well pickled vegetables make or break a Vietnamese dish, in my opinion and Pho Place delivers well pickled carrots and daikon radish in healthy amounts in the "Autumn rolls" and in both of mine and my wife's bowl dishes. The grilled pork is prepared very well and is very tasty. The let downs. First, my rice bowl was sent out with noodles...I didn't send it back as we were in a bit of a hurry. Second, and this is just a personal taste, the peanut sauce was thin and didn't have enough peanut butter...once again, I just like mine thicker and more peanut butter rich. Next, the lemongrass chicken was prepared fresh, but the recipe was done different than what I'm used to. The sauce they served was light and fresh, but I prefer the preparation with a darker sauce. Once again, this is just my comparison to the original way I've had it. A word on the ambiance. The restaurant had Christian music playing on the speaker system. Now, I'm a Christian and enjoy Christian music, but I like to eat ethnic food to experience a different culture. For example, I like it when the hostess at a Thai restaurant bows and says hello in Thai...to me, it makes the experience more "authentic." Same thing at an Indian restaurant. I like the fennel and sugar at the door and the owner telling me goodbye in Hindi. What I'm saying is I personally would be more impressed if there was Vietnamese music on the speakers and an ambiance more representative of Vietnamese culture. When it comes to PHO I'm new to the game. I have had it at a handful of places in the past few months. This place is currently number two when it comes to flavor and service. Very friendly staff and clean environment, just don't take a deep breath when you walk in as the funk will hit you. I don't think it's the food as I have never smelt a stink as this at a PHO place. Pho was great, nice deep flavor and generous with meat. Fresh spring rolls were also tasty. My only gripe with this place is the ambience. I've been here 3 times and they've either had CNN on the TV ( I don't want to listen to politics when I'm getting my Pho on), or soft, sleepy Christian music. It really kills the vibe and makes me want to do take out. Also, I hate that you have to get EVERYTHING yourself (drink, flatware, napkins, chop sticks, bowls, soup spoon, hoisin sauce, siracha, etc). This was the first restaurant I walked into after most places opened back up due to covid19. It was an unfortunate experience. I certainly understand that a lot of businesses are unorganized right now, and I do have patience. But even if covid didn't happen, I'd still feel the same way. Upon walking in, I noticed some arguing from a customer and the person at the register working. It was my turn to pick up my food and noticed the person at the register wasn't wearing their mask properly. Anyone preparing or handling food should be wearing it properly. I take the food home and discovered several strands of hair in my food. Made me feel uneasy and chose not to eat it. The restaurant was not clean. Absolutely love this place. Have been coming here nonstop since they opened. The Pho is one of the best I've ever had. It's super easy, walk in and order, have a seat and within 5 minutes they bring your food to your table. Always friendly and fast. My wife and I came for dinner after going to Lowe's one night. All in all the pho was good with the option to have the tendon which is one of my favorites, but most places don't have. Unfortunately, the broth which makes pho was not deep enough on flavor it probably could have stewed another 8 hours to gain that really serious flavor profile you only find in great pho from grandma. Ordered food online to be delivered at a later time. Arrived on time, but only 1/3 of the order. I called. I was told the driver left part of our order behind. I called 30 minutes later, and was told the driver had another order to deliver first, but would bring it. I asked when we could expect our food. He told me maybe 30 minutes... One hour past the first part of my order. When he arrived 40 minutes later, again part of the order was forgotten. This time when I called back I asked for them to credit my card. Was not impressed whatsoever. From the reviews, it looks like they should stick to Pho and get rid of their Chinese dishes. I ordered sweet and sour chicken, cheese ragoon, and a boba smoothie. Everything had such an odd taste and the rice that accompanied the sweet and sour chicken was so stiff as if it had been sitting for awhile. If there is a positive note about my order, the quality of chicken used was good. I would give this place another try, but just to try the pho that others are raving about. read more

People rating the restaurant less than 4* must not know anything about pho. Ive eaten here twice. Had pho both times and both times it's been excellent. As good as San Antonio gets.
