I ordered a bunch of different items from here for an early lunch via Uber eats as I was staying at a hotel nearby for a work conference and have been feeling under the weather. I primarily wanted pho (for my cold) and saw online that this place has good reviews so went first with the Pho Dac Viet. I also ordered spring rolls, chicken wings (with fish sauce) and a condensed Vietnamese coffee. I was disappointed that I couldn't easily eat the pho since a plastic bowl doesn't come with the order (so I ate out of the broth plastic take away after adding all of the pho ingredients). I do feel like the pho was pretty decent though! The wings were ok. I've had better for sure. Vietnamese condensed milk coffee was excellent and as expected too though. I was excited to go try this restaurant. I see on the menu things you do not find at other restaurant. Service is friendly but very pushy! We ordered the ribs pho to share... he left and came back saying he will create a special dish to share. Did not understand I thought he is saying he will make an appetizer plate... turned out an extra large ribs pho plate. Ordered another noodle dish and 2 kind of crabs and a beef salad. He said to get the duck instead of the salad. Long story short it turned out to be a LOT of food. I don't know much about the restaurants in this side of town so decided to check on Yelp for recommendations. After reading Yelper's Jimmy D review, I was totally sold about this place (you should definitely read his review!). Pho Ba 9 not only serves your typical Vietnamese dishes, they also have a larger variety of Vietnamese dishes which you don't see too often. In case you are not very familiar with a dish and would like to see a picture, they have a QR code on each table that has images of ALL the dishes on their menu. For my first time I decided to go with the classic Pho Ga, and to share my husband and I ordered fried rice with filet mignon in a garlic butter sauce. Everything came out super quick and was 10/10. The pho broth was packed with flavor and exactly what I needed on a cold winter day. The fried rice was so flavorful and the meat was very tender. A local pho spot with delicious dishes! The broth is always very tasty and full bodied. They are also generous with the meatball servings as well as noodle servings. We have dined here twice and each time I have enjoyed the pho. The funny thing is, each time my fiancé orders, he gets a different dish than what he ordered. We were in the mood for soup (my dad & I) and we stopped here... I didn't know what to expect nor how to order but I ended up having the #33 and it was sooooooo delicious... exactly what I needed, I took one to go for my husband and he enjoyed it as well. This place was an excellent choice. The inside was decorated nicely. Very open with lots of tables. The owner seated us quickly. My wife got a Thai tea. We got fried Eggrolls, summer rolls, wagyu beef and brisket phó and wagyu beef and beef rib phó. When I eat at a new phó place I always taste the broth first. This broth was a nice rich bone broth, seasoned nicely, and slightly sweet. The add ins were cilantro, lemon, lime, basil, bean sprouts and jalapeños. They had chili oil, chili garlic, sriracha, and hoisin sauce to bring it to your liking. The fried Eggrolls were bigger than I've seen in most restaurants. The summer rolls were fresh. My wife liked her beef and brisket phó. The owner talked me into a beef rib and beef phó. He explained how it was marinated two days, then grilled, then added to the phó. The meat pulled right off the bone. No doubt a new favorite of mine. This should be a six star restaurant. Very nice owners. He did say though, first come first serve. Oh my, where do I start? Growing up in a Vietnamese family, you see and remember a lot of things. Visiting the grocery store and seeing the live lobster, the decor of Vietnamese restaurants, the Vietnamese music in the background while eating. This has all that nostalgia! I came here on a Thursday during lunch time, and was immediately greeted by a wonderful lady. My order was immediately taken by who I believe is the owner. And man is he quite ecstatic and very customer service oriented. He came in to check in if I needed anything often. He even asked if I wanted bean sprouts in my pho since I said no on the spring rolls since I was allergic to them. That's proper customer service. Now, on to the food. The springs are very fresh. The inconsistency of the roll means that these rolls are made by hand. The filling wasn't what I'm used to having, since that usually has mint, basil, and noodles. These rolls had a lettuce slaw, noodles, pork and shrimp. Still great. The Vietnamese iced coffee is thick and very flavorful. It's obvious that they used the correct ingredients and don't water down their coffee that you may find in less-than-stellar Vietnamese restaurants (don't get me started). As for the pho, you find A LOT of restaurants that supplement their bone broth with a flavoring powder. This place is no different, BUT, this tastes more authentic that the powdery pho soups you find elsewhere. There is a fine balance from actual bone broth than actual powder. The pho is as close to Mom's home cooking as I can get in a restaurant! This pho place took over the previous pho place that was here. When I moved to San Antonio, it was always closed and I never got to try it. I'm normally a regular at Pho 4 Star in Universal City, but perhaps I've found my new spot! read more
