My friend wanted to go here to try out the pho challenge, but decided to just try out some of the regular bowls of pho first before he tried it another time. Not gonna lie, I was a bit skeptical about this place because I'm used to more modern Vietnamese restaurants to tone down the flavors to appeal to a wider audience, but I was very impressed. I got the beef Bánh mi which was a bit expensive ($10 as of May 2022) but the size of the Bánh mi was way bigger than a typical Bánh mi. One of my friends got a bowl of pho and another got a bowl of bun Bo hue and I tried the broth for both and really enjoyed each of them. Good pho, one of my favorite takeout foods because it's all packaged separately and you can always make it "fresh" throughout the day by heating soup and portioning out the meat, noodles, and toppings. This is located in the Safeway, 24/7 hr fitness plaza with a parking lot. There isn't many pho restaurants in Castro Valley so decided to try this out. The restaurant is very modern. I came here prior to COVID and there was a condiment area for you grab yourself. We order the pho combination here and wasn't the biggest fan of this place. In the Luckys shopping center you find this play on words Vietnamese restaurant. Its the nicest most modern Pho place I have ever seen. Staff is fast and friendly and they have plenty of seating in the place. We tried the basic Combination beef pho with tendon, brisket, meatball and tripe. Fresh ingredients and to my surprise the broth was good and not too greasy. Plenty of meat and noodles. Next the vegetarian spring rolls were great as well as the grilled pork Bahn mi. It is entirely different from where I live and I totally love the aesthetics and atmosphere of the restraunt. Update: We have weathered COVID and are happy to go back for noodles on the regular. During lockdown, the Ban Mi lemongrass beef sandwich became a favorite. I'm happy to be back for the pho which is so much better in person (best to eat ASAP). The lemongrass beef is amazing, and I'm a consistent devourer of the pho rare steak. What the pho!? Located in the nicer part of Castro Valley, this plaza has ample parking and a lot of other food spaces available. Inside the restaurant is not your typical Vietnamese restaurant. You have to order at the counter, and then find seating, and then they will bring the food out. Not my first preference of how to order Pho by the way. The prices of things on the menu is kind of expensive. And the portion did not justify the price whatsoever. If I had to compare, a small bowl if equivalent to $18 dollars. That's rather hefty, and you're not getting very much either. Here's what we ordered: 1. Banh Mi Dac Biet: I'd like to start off with saying the bread did not taste like your typical French baguette. It actually tasted like your original white roll bread, but a little thinner. The deli meat is ok, nothing extravagant. For $10, it's kind of pricy, and it's not as good. Honestly, the bread is the problem. 2. Pho Dac Biet: Lack of flavor, the BBH was a better option. 3. Bun Bo Hue: I order this extra spicy, and.. Honestly I was highly disappointed. All I tasted was the oil from the annatto seeds. My noodles were undercooked. This restaurant was way too overpriced, and definitely not even worth it in any way. Had to run some errands in Hayward so we stopped in the newly opened Pho Play in Castro Valley. Located on top of the hill in the Safeway / Petco shopping center there is plenty of parking. The restaurant is minimalistic but clean. I read the reviews before going so I knew what to expect and what we were going to order. Pho Play is another order first, pay then find a seat and they bring you the order restaurant. Having been in the restaurant business there are so many flaws with the process. The ownerships efforts to try and either cut costs, or simplify the process they have created other problems and reduced their potential sales. Here some of the reasons. Bottleneck at the cashier / ordering station. People who would have been seated are relegated to stand in line and order, then hoping to find a desired seat and table. The cashier still needs to scour the dining room to find an open table number to send your food to. The menu is simple but can not be read completely until you are already in front of the cashier, taking up more time. Cash out your order, chose your tip before you realize there is no service. Solution, tip cash at the table. The food and drinks are brought to your table by number. There is no particular order to which comes first. We received the grilled combo first, then the Bun Bo Hue, then the Vietnamese ice coffee. If you decide or want other items you'll need to get back in line. There is a reason for food servers in the restaurant business and if the restaurant is successful the tips will be enough to keep good servers giving good service at the table. Food: Bun Bo Hue was good slightly different twist with a Chinese five spice flavor. Add your own shrimp paste and chili sauce. Lots of toppings. WOW not only did i really enjoy their food, i was doubly impressed by the purse/bag hooks on the underside of the table... LOL Its a thoughtful touch and works out ergonomically for smaller spaces.. I came here after going to the gym because I was just too tired to go anywhere else, and I've been wanting to try this place. The decor here is very nice, it's clean, hip and very modern. You order in the front and they give you a number and they will bring you your order. Minimalistic menu to order from. I came here with a friend and I ordered the Bun Bo Hue and he ordered a combo grilled vermicelli bowl. The Bun Bo Hue was quite disappointing. The soup was very sweet and didn't have the umami traditional flavors of the soup. It was a very untraditional recipe that I don't care to order again. The noodles were pretty soft too, and I didn't like it. The combo grilled vermicelli bowl was better, but something was definitely missing. The chicken had good flavor and tender, the shrimp was good too but once again, the noodle was just a miss and kind of soggy. The Vietnamese iced coffee came out well, which was nice. My friends and I ordered several different menu items to try. My favorite item is the Pho Tai with the rare steak on the side. Their slices of meat is longer than you'd typically get at other pho restaurants, but it's not bad. The broth is flavorful and very warm (not to burn your tongue when sipping); I barely use the other condiments in my soup. The bean sprouts and extra fixings are fresh. We tried a couple of their rolls. The egg rolls weren't anything fancy, but could use more seasoning/flavor and not be overcooked. The grilled pork rolls lacked flavor as well and tasted more dry. Hopefully this improves in the near future. Their service is pretty fast. As soon as you get seated, within 5-7 minutes, your food comes out! Pricing is reasonable. There is an option to participate in the PHO CHALLENGE. This consists of 2lbs of noodles, 1/2 lb of meat, 2 quarts of broth in a challenge size bowl. Growing up with family from Vietnam and still running a noodle shop, pho and other Vietnamese cuisine has always been my source of comfort food. Typically I'd be headed to Oakland or San Jose for some delicious heartwarming meals or if there's a craving, it'd be towards San Leandro. I craved good pho in CV and was still looking for something good with in a 10 minute drive when this place popped up a few minutes away! The décor and vibe is very modern but the smell of the broth just permeates throughout the restaurant, like a welcoming scent for a good hearty meal. For here, there a line in front to order and pay - then you'd get seated. I love most about these tables are that there's hooks for bags! No need to sit uncomfortably to keep your bag or coat on the chair now . As this place just opened, I'm expecting there to be hiccups here and there with the food runners and food wait time; our meal came fairly quick but drinks (boba) took much longer than the food. Staff were friendly and they had free soda & water for guests to grab during the grand opening. For the menu, it looks fairly simplistic but there's plenty of options to choose from. From pho to com tom to goi cuon, they got all my favorites and essentials to a good meal! There's also buns that I'll be trying next time around. There's a pho play challenge too, so that'll be fun for some who have a giant appetite! My order was pho tái bò viên (pho with rare steak and meatballs) with an order of grilled shrimp goi cuon (spring rolls) and a passion fruit tea with boba. As for the broth, it was yummy but a lot saltier than expected (I'm inclined to think that it's powder stock rather than meat/bone boiled). The spring rolls were wrapped tight and the peanut/hoisin sauce was delicious with the good balance of both flavors. For the drink, the passion fruit tea was a bit lack luster but refreshing never the less; boba was a little chewy and sticky, but not bad for a restaurant. Final Thoughts: I'll definitely be back for more, especially when I have a craving for some comfort food. I happened upon Pho Play restaurant in Castro Valley sort of by accident. It was one of those times on a road trip where you realize you're starvin like Marvin so you jump to Yelp for some foodie help! Pho Play was a minute away, had good reviews, and I'm always game for pho! Pho Play is located in an open mall with a variety of shops. Parking was easy and plentiful right outside the front door. Pho Play is a smallish restaurant that has a very clean and modern vibe with white subway tile running the length of the restaurant. There is a menu on the wall as you walk in and an ordering counter. You basically place your order at the counter, pay for your meal up front, then take a seat. Your food will be brought to your table, or wrapped to go depending on how you placed your order. Here's why dining inside seemed totally fine. Pho Play seems to be really on top of Covid protocols! The ordering counter has large plastic panels dividing employees behind the counter and guests placing orders. Staff wore masks and gloves, and diners were required to wear masks when not actually eating. There are technically two restrooms, but one is blocked off for employees only (which I think is very wise and very Covid savvy). I ordered the Rare steak and brisket Pho soup bowl. It was wonderful!! There was a ton of beef in the bowl, along with rice noodles, onion, green onions. A plate of bean spouts, basil, peppers, and sliced limes accompanied the bowl. For those who may not know, pho is so much more than soup. When made generously it's basically two meals. You get a pile of meat and veg, and a deliciously complex broth. My bowl was meaty, oniony, chewy, crunchy (bean sprouts) and that broth really hit the other notes of layered flavors that make Vietnamese food such a roller coaster of pleasure. The bowl was so filling, I would say it was a super bargain! I also got a sweetened ice coffee. For those who have not had this before, be warned that is is super strong, and at the same time cloyingly sweet! I like it because I can sip on it for an hour and the melting ice in the cup mellows the sweetness and strength of the coffee as time passes. It's the perfect drink for the road! And Pho Play serves it in a plastic cup with a "no spill, no contact" plastic sheet over the top. To drink, you pierce the top with your straw. If you've had a boba drink, this is the same idea. I ordered a Vietnamese hot coffee. This lady said 15 minutes because it is dripped coffee. I said yes I will wait. Came back in like less than 10 minutes and was given a 6 ounce not hot coffee. Probably my top favorite spot in Castro Valley for Pho. The service is great the food comes out pretty fast, I also recommend the pork belly, Boba buns and their shrimp spring rolls They're huge. They also play really nice music kinda jazzy but definitely relaxing 10/10 read more

Veggie egg rolls were and vermicelli bowls are ! The staff was very friendly. It's very clean with plenty of dine in space.

I ordered Pho seafood and banh mi beef (Sandwich) (to-go) few days ago. Ummm.... I've never wanted to leave a bad review for a restaurant but this one is horrible. Pho seafood, the noodles texture is hard, not sure if they cooked them and scallops are raw. Even though the soup is super hot, it can't heat up the noodles and seafood, which means they are directly from fridge without cooking. This is the worst pho i ever had. In the sandwich, beef is super salty and dry. Not recommended! read more

I think this might be the best Pho place in Castro Valley! The proportions are perfect and so is the service, I love!!
