This used to be my favorite Pho spot when I lived here. In town for work, I was so excited to get inside and find only a group of three in the restaurant. I was seated and order taken, Morse customers arrived and were seated behind and after me. Time passed and I never received my drink. I waited as the waitress who looked to be the only one, served each customer after me. Time came and went as she ushered out each dish to all the customers while I continued to wait for my drink. She made at least 3-4 passes by my table delivering entrees and drinks. Not sure what happened but I was disappointed and just left. read more

So many people suggested the oxtail pho that I had to go there. When ordering the owner suggested another item - I think #10 but not really sure. He said get oxtail next time. This item he said you can't get anywhere else and people come from DC and Norfolk just to order this dish. He said this special broth has an extra ginger flavor to it. Not much help but ask for it and you won't go wrong. It was phenomenal! The broth was unique to any pho I've ever had and cleaned my entire bowl- which rarely happens. But it was THAT good. I love pho... but this pho establishment was sad. I ordered the summer spring rolls (just the shrimp) and it looked tasty. They were big too! I dipped it into the peanut sauce, and it had no flavor! I just felt I was dipping my summer spring roll into a creamy (texture), but tasteless sauce. Also, they gave me such little peanut sauce for the 2 rolls. I also ordered a pho tai with round eye steak, and when I went to take a bite of the steak in my soup it smelled and tasted funny. I love pho, but I was extremely disappointed with my experience here. If you are craving pho, I wouldn't recommend coming here. I am actually surprised at the high rating. After receiving our food, we discovered that all of their food is inundated with black pepper. I am very allergic to black pepper and didn't know this and after putting the chicken in my pho I had a significant allergic reaction. We also got the vegetarian spring rolls, which were covered in black pepper. Thank gosh my daughter noticed before I ate any. After notifying the restaurant that this was not listed in the ingredients, they acknowledged that it was not listed. I have eaten pho from many other pho restaurants where there is never been an issue with black pepper. They apologized said they would put it on their ingredient list, but did not offer us a refund or anything for food we had to throw away and could not eat and spent gas to drive to the restaurant to pick it up. I ordered the oxtail pho, the taste was there but unfortunately they are extremely stingy with the meat. 15+ min for pho is new to me. Didn't get greeted when i entered the door although 7 different workers looked me in my eye and kept working around me and the 5 other guests at the door. Waiting at the bar right now and haven't been offered a drink or anything going on 15min. Nasty Follow up: Called in about my experience before posting to see if i would be heard out. Bartender cut me off and adamantly denied being able to believe I wasn't offered a drink by him. I've been described his entire outfit (just saw him 10 min ago). He couldn't recall me probably because he never served me. He probably hung up on me. When I called back he was screaming into the phone while the other manager was speaking to me. Visited Richmond for business trip and came here for a dinner and a lunch during the 2 day visit since I loved their bun ho hue. The first time I came for dinner the soup was spicier than the second time, but either way I love their broth and the texture of the noodles. Everything was still hot and the banh xeo was still crispy - Usually banh xeo has to be served immediately or it will loose the cripsiness but this version, to my surprise, was still crispy when arrived. We ordered the pork chop & rice, which came with 2 chops (again, I have never had a portion that comes with 2 chops) and taste just right. This was the first modern Pho restaurant I've been too with a full bar. The atmosphere is very romantic and comfortable. I visited with my sister the staff greeted us right away and was very polite and personable. They have a great menu selection from Pho to Wok dishes, they even had oxtail pho. I ordered the Beef Pho and all I can say is this was truly the best pho I've ever had. the broth was so well seasoned and delicious. I ordered fried egg rolls and pho tai. The egg rolls were thick, hot and crispy. Very flavorful. The wrapper was thicker than I'm used to though. My friend ordered spring rolls and they were a bit dry on the ends. The pho came out SUPER hot, which I love, but super GREASY. The soup had an interesting herb flavor but it tasted good. I'm rating this 2.5-3 stars because the food took forever to come out and we got our food after another couple who arrived 10-15min after we did. Richmond, of all places, has become a real hotbed for Vietnamese and Thai food, with the influx of new residents hailing from the far east, and in this current down economy, this has turned into a real battle for diners in the West End of the area. Most restaurants that feature Vietnamese regional cooking have several of the same things in common - choices of several proteins, large portions, reasonable prices, and overall good service. How Pho Saigon distinguishes itself is in the freshness of their ingredients and their willingness to alter the menu to satisfy their customers. As the family arrived, we were warmly greeted and were served very soon after being seated. As we discussed our son's allergy to beef and dairy with the server, the owner came over and assured that ANYTHING we wanted could be changed to accomodate this allergy. We were relieved and our son was excited to try the noodles and chicken in the Pho he was made. The menu also featured a kids area that did not fall into the normal "safe" areas of burgers and chicken nuggets, but rather featured the best and most popular of their noodle and soup choices tailored for the younger diners. Our younger son was thrilled to have the chance to tailor his meal this way. As for the food, we could not say that we have had better in the area. The vegetables were fresh, the meats and seafoods that complimented our dishes were cooked and seasoned perfectly, and the portions were large and reasonably priced. The service was attentive and genuinely concerned that we were taken care of. Tucked behind the main road at the Lexington Shopping Center on Broad Street, this area has seen a renaissance of food choices in the past year or so, and it has also seen some favorites fold up shop, like Jimmy's in the front of the shopping center. It is more important than ever to patronize these locally owned restaurants if we wish to keep them around, and Pho Saigon should stick around for a long while based on many of the things that make a dining experience truly worthwhile and worth the money. This is a great restaurant. We went later in the evening and they were welcoming. The food was quick to serve and was delicious. I recommend the pho chang, just as the name suggests. They even asked if I wanted veggie broth!! :) Also we ordered vegetarian dumplings, which were delightful. My favorite part: no plastic ware on the table!!! I don't often give 5 stars because I think that this means best of category. Pho Saigon is Best in it's category! Pho Saigon not only has GREAT Pho but a great all around menu. My husband and I shared an appetizer that we'd never had before (#5?) which was simply amazing! I'd try to describe it but wouldn't do it justice. Trying to get a sampling of the menu, we ordered one Pho (traditional beef) and one entree (a curried shrimp dish). Usually we share but not this time. We had a spoonful of each other's dish but remained focused on our own! There are only a couple of beers on tap but the selection is well thought out from a PBR to an Alagash White and a couple good ones in between. Since I try and slip in vegan/vegetarian food when it is just as tasty as meat, I asked if they had a veg version of this great staple. They did. They used tofu, which isn't always to my taste texture wise, but I wanted to give it a shot. What I received bowled me over! The best I can describe it was if a French Dip and a Banh Mi had a baby. This was the juiciest, most flavorful sandwich I have had, possibly ever! It was served with a small bowl of tasty broth as well. My SO had the ginger wok tofu and thought it was great. The menu is extensive and has a lot of authentic options. Don't be fooled by the exterior in a strip mall. The interior was quite large and comfortable, if basic.
