Great Hidden Secret for one of the best places to get Pho in Richmond. I had tried Da Lat a couple times and while it sufficed, I was eager to try Tay Do after hearing about it from several different people. While the neighborhood isn't one I'd typically be wandering through, I'll definitely come back for their delicious Pho. The place is family run and apparently, the broth can vary depending on which family member is currently there. The daughters are awesome and the service was fine. The inside in nothing fancy and there are all these painting all over the walls which actually are quite interesting to look at. PHO TAY DO! Make sure you take cash because THEY NO TAKE CARD! Out of the 3 pho places I've tried in RVA, this is my fave! Fair warning though, the portions here are smaller than at, say, Pho So 1 - if you've got a big appetite, you'll get more bang for your buck somewhere else. I always get the pho tai chin (#12) and, if I'm extra hungie, the BBQ pork spring rolls. The total for both is an even $10. Perfect. Their pork spring rolls are def delish and thus far the only ones I've liked. The pho broth is great and flavorful without being too rich, the noodles are good texture, and there's always a generous portion of meat! The pho ga (chicken pho) was a disappointment, so I wouldn't bother with that. Again, their portions are smalller than average, but enough to still be satisfied. Because of the small portioning, it is a bit expensive IMO, but I feel the superior taste more than makes up for it. ***This is why I gave this place 4 instead of 5 stars. Tbh it's more a 4.5 from me than anything else. My pho conclusions for RVA: Pho Tay Do if you want the best tasting and you aren't starving; Pho So 1 if you want good tasting and you could eat a horse. This little pho house, is much much better than any of the pho places in NOVA. It is always consistent, every time I have been here. I also am a fan of the HT2.. Noodles Nam Vang style with soup on the side. Sooo good. I lick the bowl its so yummy! The spring rolls are good, not overly stuffed with rice noodles and the shrimp and pork are fresh. Raising a star after a revisit today. Service is just fantastic and the pho is really good. The crispy rolls still lack, and the absence of cilantro breaks my heart... but all in all this place is a great alternative for Tuesday's when it's neighbor is closed. read more

Very unassuming little house and location. Ordered the pho ga and spring rolls. The spring rolls were "ehh" but the pho was pho-nomenal! The broth had a great flavor (and more fat than I'm used to). The chicken was cooked perfectly and I loved the added sauteed/fried onions. I did miss the usual jalapeno slices and sriracha. Plenty of bean sprouts, basil, and lime. All of the other reviews have pointed this out but I will reiterate. It looks like a house but don't be fooled. CASH ONLY. It's worth the hassle of going by the ATM. Went with my norm: pho ga and spring rolls. Both were awesome. Springs rolls were some of the best I've had. The decor could use some help. It kind of looks/feels like one of those fake houses they setup out in the dessert for the atomic bomb testing. On a side note, there was a point during the meal where a random guy walked in with a guitar and started singing "we are the world." His guitar was very out of tune and I'm pretty sure he only knew one line of the chorus which he kept repeating... I have to wonder if this is a routine occurrence because no one seemed to notice him except for me and he was gone as fast as he appeared. While the excellent pho could have caused hallucinations, I'm fairly certain he was real and I can only hope to see him again. Overall it's a great spot. I highly recommend. read more

Great service and okay vegan food. The tofu and rice was well-flavored, but it was very minimal, with way too much tofu and lacking veggies for my liking. The vegetarian options are also very limited, so I recommend Phoenix Garden if you're looking for a wide array of vegan options. However when compared to Pho So 1, the quality of service and food is so much better here (except my mom didn't like her hu tieu). If you didn't know it was here, you would never find it! Pho Tay Do is a tiny whole in the wall type restaurant with fantastic food. Every time I have been here, the restaurant has been full of Vietnamese people. That is sign one that this place MUST be good. In fact, I found Pho Tay Do through a Vietnamese friend! The service is good, the decor is a little strange (some scantily clad women paintings) but the pho is out of this world! I have been going here ever since I was a baby. Literally. This wonderful little place is a minute or two away from my house, which I've lived in my whole life, and it still has that sweet little charm to it that I remember admiring as a child. The owner and her daughter have known me since forever, and I have no idea why I have only now decided to write up a review for this beloved second home of mine. Food-wise, it's great quality and will leave you feeling satisfied. Their specialty, the pho, offers many different cuts of beef - you can even choose your own cuts. My personal favorite dish, however, is the Chicken Broken Rice Dish. Second place is the Beef version :) I always order a Vietnamese iced coffee to go with my meal, because, well, who doesn't love themselves a good ol' cup of Viet coffee? They bring it to you in this mini glass/metal coffee maker, and you wait for the coffee juices to finish dripping down. Afterwards, you replace the top (preferably over your provided glass cup of ice) as you stir the coffee juices to mix with the condensed milk sitting in the bottom. You then pour it into your cup and enjoy a smooth, cold drink of joe! I think it's nice how you can do it yourself because it allows you to interact with the culture and it really ties your heartstrings down to this place. Atmosphere-wise, it depends on the person. For me, it feels homey, since I've been coming here for so long. Also because they've got paintings of Vietnam and Cambodia hanging on their walls, which actually make me feel a bit homesick! However, the main "appeal" that I think surprises newcomers most are their somewhat creepy cardboard cutouts of random people... If you go here long enough, you'll get used to them and it'll be like it was never even there to start with. Price-wise, I wouldn't complain. It's all reasonable and affordable and a place that I go to all the time in the mornings to start my day. Overall, definitely do try this place out. Such an eclectic little restaurant in Richmond! In an old house with lots of one of a kind murals/art. Stopped by during a day visit to Richmond. The pho was great, though on the more expensive side at $7.50 for a smallish bowl. Rich broth, good noodle consistency, fresh herbs, and a decent amount of protein. I enjoyed our order of eggrolls, and it was nice to come in orders of just 2 since it was hubby and I sharing. The pork chop over rice was just ok and I wouldn't get it again. I am not sure where to begin... so, I will say that the 5 stars is for the food and the overall experience which includes the surreal ambiance. I went here with my son, after almost going to Pho So 1 again, we decided to try Pho Tay Do. We walked into the house, which then immediately became a Pho Cafe, which felt very real and in line with what you might find in a district outside of Hanoi, Vietnam. The food, all of It was delicious! The service was perfect. The husband and wife team were grateful for our visit and we were equally grateful for their hospitality and for sharing the amazing Rice Paper Pho Rolls and 2 bowls of Pho that were cooked fresh in the kitchen. What a hidden jam! We were on a college tour and encountered this by chance and boys were in for a pleasant surprise. The foods were excellent with a corky decor. I'm hoping that my daughter will get in the school by next year so we can go back again and again! read more

This restaurant is located right behind pho so 1 so it's easy to miss. The restaurant itself is pretty small and literally looks like the inside of a house. I think this added to the authentic atmosphere of the restaurant. The egg rolls were a bit greasy, so be prepared for that. The pho was very fresh and is probably one of my favorite pho places. Some places are too bland or sweet/salty, but this dish was just right. The ingredients they give you are also very fresh. The only downside of pho tay do is that the portions are pretty small. I can't usually eat much, but I can finish a large here. The large is similar to a regular at other locations. Also, THEY ONLY TAKE CASH! So don't forget that! read more

Definitely a hole in the wall place in the "Vietnamese town" of Richmond. My boyfriend and I ordered a large pho to share for 6.50 which includes all the fixings (lime, cilantro, bean sprouts, etc.) and BBQ pork chops with broken rice for 7.00 since I wanted to see what all the rant was about. In addition to that we ordered the fresh spring rolls appetizer and a jasmine iced tea. The portions were well-sized, enough for leftovers but we cleaned off our share all the way. No shame. The pho was not too greasy and the jasmine iced tea was a hit! Very polite and quick service were the charms of this place besides the tasty food. Would bring friends here who are into ethnic foods. Went here Sunday with hubby and 9 year old daughter (who is very picky). They were busy but we lucked out and got a seat immediately. They were overly accommodating for my daughter (rice on one plate, beef on another). No problem. Then she wanted a "side of grilled shrimp"-gave her 2 orders. The dude waiting on us was FAB-the whole staff in fact. I got the iced Vietnamese Coffee and had no idea what I was doing-waitress coached me through the process-didn't feel like a moron. Originally, I believed Pho was the best on the West Coast like in Seattle or Cali as they are the most populated areas for Vietnamese communities on the west side. However, life launched my wife and I clear across the country to Richmond, VA for schooling at VCU. We lived in Horsepen Estates and walked to eat here every weekend. Usually Saturday afternoons. We discovered that this is the best Pho in the USA. People of Richmond, you are so lucky to have this little make shift pho restaurant/house. The family that makes the pho here is truly great at making their broth. We moved back to Seattle now. Although, I discovered I am now gluten intolerant, my wife still talks about this place because she hasn't found anything like it. She is also Vietnamese so that says a lot. This place is a total hole in the wall. It's a small house in a residential neighborhood that just happens to serve delicious food. Totally bizarre. I was in Richmond for work and felt like I was getting sick. Naturally, I looked for Pho on yelp, and Pho Tay Do came up as close to the hotel and delicious. And it was. I had a brisket and strip steak pho, and it was so amazing. BE AWARE: you will really stink when you leave here. You will smell so bad. I couldn't get the smell out of my hair. I'm only giving it 4 stars because the summer rolls were not as good as I thought they would be. The peanut sauce was not questionable--not even peanutty! It was more like caramel. Also, the bowls they use are not consistent/standardized, so people got different amounts of food for the same order of Pho. I would say that it adds eccentricity to the place, but there is already plenty of that in the decor of this restaurant. The star of the restaurant is obviously the Pho--the savory, flavorful and not overly salty or oily broth is made to perfection. I think I really need to sit down with 2 bowls of pho, one from here and one from Pho So 1 to determine which Pho reigns supreme. But, they are both delicious regardless! read more

Most amazing Pho EVER! When my wife and I first started dating she brought me to several Pho restaurants in the Northern VA area, and none of them really clicked with me (wayyyy to much cilantro). Without a single solitary doubt in my mind this is the best pho in Richmond. They are a small restaurant built into what was a house. They are mom and pop. They are eccentrically decorated (there are hand painted busty waitresses here and there and other hand painted scenes done by the owner). They don't have fancy tables and they don't take anything but cash. With that being said, I have converted every single person I have taken here from their pho of choice. The broth has an absolute complexity of flavor only achievable through true mastery of the soup, they offer the rare meat pho as a chance to chose your done-ness by submerging it or not submerging in the very hot broth. They don't overdo it on the green onion cilantro or regular onion though you can request more if you really want. Their drip coffee is the proper way it should be done, and is absolutely delicious. On top of that? This place is cheap. I can get a mega bowl and cup of drip coffee for ~$13. read more

Super friendly wait staff, and the food comes out FAST. After trying several pho places over the past year, Tay Do has quickly and easily become my favorite. The prices are near unbeatable (just make sure you bring cash) and despite what some reviews may say I think the portions are very reasonable. I have eaten Pho in many many places and I have to say that this is my favorite Pho restaurant. You have to get over the neighborhood and the outward appearance of the restaurant; like a book, you can't judge it by its cover. All of the art work (ok, some may argue on the word art) in the dining room. It was all cut out and painted by the owner and i think it adds a great deal of charm to the place. This family run restaurant is always a joy to come to, you are greeted and they are incredibly friendly and the food is brout out quickly. Now to the food. I am a huge fan of spring rolls, the non fried version but the fried spring rolls here are perfectly cooked, not greasy and they are full of flavor. I always get the hot jasmine tea and a pho tai chin, which is brisket and eye round steak. The broth is the best I have ever tasted. It is rich in taste, not thin like some other places. You are given plenty of condiments and the service is spot on and if you are in a hurry, you can get in and out in 20 minutes. The only downside is no credit cards and no bills over $50. They were the victims of bad C-notes being passed around...but that's about it. So if you are looking for a little escape, want a great meal with friendly service at a great cost, this place is it. read more

i wanted to go to another pho place in the area which was unfortunately closed due to renovations but i was happy to find this place very close buy ambiance-it is in a house which was a bit strange at first. there have been comments on the pictures being creepy and i get that. some of the pics(of the river, water buffalo) are actually nice and i liked them the food the spring rolls were bit on the chewy side the pho itself was great. they also honored my request to NOT put cilanto(vile weed!) in my pho which seems to be a standard thing. cash only! read more
