One of the better places in Hayward for Vietnamese food other than Oakland....the bun (vermicelli with grilled meat) is one of my faves, combo rice plate (pork chop, 2 fried chicken wing, one egg roll) is super yummy and egg noodle (you can substitute instead of rice noodle) with rare sliced beef pho is pretty good. Flavor is on point, generous portion, above avg service, and food comes out pretty quickly. I will have to agree with pricing...I've been coming to this place for at least 8 yrs and the price always seems to fluctuate, especially when ordering food to go...seems to be $1-$1.50 more for to-go orders when rung up by the older lady which seems odd but never question. First pho since we moved here and I am no pho expert. Keeping that in mind, here goes. The restaurant is small with pictures of the food along the walls. There was only one table of three already eating, so there was plenty of room. We got our water right away, but as someone else mentioned, drink it slowly. There are no automatic refills. I decided I wanted the beef pho, but the owner recommended the beef and brisket. I imagine he recommended it because there was a big pot of it in the back, but since it was exactly what I wanted plus a little more, I took him up on his suggestion. We ordered chicken wings as an appetizer (don't ask). They came out after the pho, which came out immediately after we ordered! We enjoyed the pho, with fresh basil, bean sprouts and lime. I let my partner have all the jalapeños. We ordered medium pho, but in my book it was pretty large for a medium. We saved room to try one of the wings. They were large, still warm and tender with a delicious hint of garlic. Standard Vietnamese fare? I think not, but still tasty. The pho was good, the broth tasty. Using Pho Ty II as my baseline and with no horrible missteps, three stars is appropriate. I read reviews after dinner about the owner being shady. That was not my experience. I did add up the bill before paying. It was easy. Everything was in $7 increments. I didn't realize we wouldn't get an itemized check, so I'm glad I figured it out before going up to pay. I suggest anyone figure out their tab before getting up to pay, just so they feel comfortable they're not getting ripped off. Our charges were spot on. Just basing this on one visit. Ordered number 20, steak and flank pho. The dish was really really really good. Seemed like my two coworkers also loved their food since they finished their bowls and said as much. It's a hole in the wall in a so-so neighborhood. But the owners are nice and the food rocks. This is a very small Restaraunt next to Carl's jr off hesperian. Me and the gf come here to get my pho fix and she gets her bon bue hue. The service here is mediocre, they don't really speak English that well, and there have been times they got my order wrong. The food comes out super fast.. and is the only reason why I love this place. The food is BOMB. They are so generous when it comes to food, and it just always hits the spot. I recommend the appetizer #2 ( fresh spring rolls) and #8 the pho combo. So delicious. Try to conserve your water or be prepared to continue to raise your hand to get a refill lol. This place does take credit/debit card so that's a plus. The food is affordable is for two people it's around $20 for two entree meals and an appetizer. Not too bad right? I've known this lady for years from her other establishments and she is the sweetest thing ever. However, her hubby (I think) is just plain old greedy. Please beware that he will overcharge you on your bill. I questioned it, but he just told me its for taxes. Pho Ty II is one of 3 Pho Ty's around the Bay Area. This location has been opened for roughly 5 years now. That being said, I am still perplexed as to how they were able to stay in business for so long after my experience tonight. My buddies and I arrived a little past 9pm on a Saturday night. The place was empty with only 1 table occupied by a party of 3. My first impression when I walked inside was that the place reminded me of an Asian temple. Everywhere you look, there would be some sort of religious decor. The fact that the walls were covered with mirrors and the ceiling was brightly lit by fluorescent tube bulbs only accentuated the matter. When the waiter arrived, I placed an order for a bowl of Bun Thit Nuong Cha Gio ($8.50 - bbq pork and egg roll over a bed of steamed vermicelli), hot tea (Free), and an order of Red Bean Ice ($3.25). I asked the waiter if the pork meat on this dish is lean or fat. I like my meat lean. He confirmed to me it is lean. While waiting for our food, the waiter brought out a teapot of tea. I poured a cup and tasted it. The tea tasted more like hot yellow colored water. There was no sign of any tea leaves or any fragrance of tea whatsoever. (-1 STAR) My buddies got their bowls of noodle soup fairly quickly. My order arrived about 8 minutes later. The fish sauce looked normal. The presentation of my bowl of Bun Thit Nuong Cha Gio looked fabulous!! I proceeded to add some chili sauce into the fish sauce and then poured the fish sauce into the bowl of noodle. After I mixed everything together and tried my first bite...this is where things started going downhill. * The fish sauce tasted WEIRD. I've had home made fish sauce and restaurant fish sauce. This fish sauce did not taste right at all. It felt like the ratio of ingredients was off or perhaps a key ingredient was left out? * The pork meat was FATTY. As I picked up the pieces of meat and examined them carefully with my chopstick, it was clearly visible that chunks of pork fat was clinging to each pieces of pork meat!! Perhaps the waiter's definition of LEAN is not the same as mine? I bit into the meat and was surprised that it tasted like the chef marinated the meat in Hoisin sauce. Typically, the pork meat in this dish is simply bbq over an open flame with very light marinate and hoisin sauce is NOT one of the methods. (-1 for fatty pork and incorrect use of hoisin sauce marinade) * The vermicelli noodle, though had a perfect warm temperature, was OILY. Each bite of the noodle uncomfortably lubricated my lips like heavy Vaseline. I found myself wiping off my glistening lips after each bite. (-1 for excessive use of oil on the vermicelli noodles) * The red bean ice dessert arrived in a transparent plastic To Go cup with closed lid and a straw stuck in the lid and a spoon stuck inside the straw. I prefer restaurants that take the extra effort in placing the red bean ice dessert in a regular glass especially if it's being consumed inside the restaurant. The red bean ice dessert consisted of large chunks of ice, coconut milk, and whole red beans. I prefer that my red bean ice have shaved ice with the red beans broken up into smaller straw-friendly pieces. * Service-wise, it was pretty much non existent. After our order was brought out, not a single person checked up on us. We had to walk up to the front counter to ask for our checks. IN SUMMARY: THE GOOD * Stays open until 10pm on a Saturday. * Accepts payment by plastic so long as your charge is over $10 THE BAD * The hot tea, though free, did not taste like tea at all. * The fish sauce tasted funny. Bun Thit Nuong is all about the fish sauce. Once you get that wrong, that's the end of it. * The lean pork meat was FATTY. * The vermicelli noodle was OILY * Nobody checked up on us during our entire dining experience. TIP * The one room universal gender restroom is situated at the end of a long hallway. Right in front of this door is an old western Cowboy style swinging door. It's pretty cool to walk through the door and see it swing back and forth!! The restroom on the other hand is nothing I want to talk about on YELP. OVERALL * This place gets a TWO STAR rating from me. Why I subtracted two stars was due to HORRIBLE customer service and unsanitary. When we first walked in, we were greeted and there was four of us in the party. I went here a while back with my friends when we were craving for some pho and this place did not disappoint! We all ordered a round of pho with some fried spring rolls and it was all delicious. The broth was good, the amount of noodle to meat ratio was spot on and good fried spring rolls. We also asked for extra lime and they provided it for us without any pushback. Standing outside of this establishment w/o a clue about what's inside, you might never EVER consider eating there. One of those 'Don't judge a book by it's cover' moments? Not the most inviting storefront. More like a grimy 7/11 or liquor store from the '70s in a bad-part-of-town kind of look. The windows are plastered with faded and almost colorless pictures and miscellaneous stickers of what was advertised 20 years ago. Nicely lit with lots of seating. The place is clean....a big plus after the grimy storefront scene accosting us on our way inside. I cannot speak for the Pho itself this time around b/c I ordered my usual favorite selection: BBQ Vietnam Pork Chop plate. It was good. Really savory sweet/salty/Asian bbq flavor that I have come to covet in this dish. It checks ALL the flavor boxes for me. The ppl working the floor seemed to be all related, and none of them were under 60 y.o. I almost felt like being served a meal in someone's Asian grandparents crib.
