Novato has ZERO (absolute NADA) options for Vietnamese food which is very disappointing, especially for this city girl. Pho Viet totally satisfied my serious craving for Shaking Beef for dinner so my 5 star rating was based on what I ate and not the service. You come in, grab a table, and patiently wait for someone to bring you menus and get your drink order. OMG their Bo Lac Luc (that Shaking Beef dish I mentioned) is sooooo freaking good. Tender juicy bites of beef deliciousness that I ordered with their watercress salad and rice. My family had Pho beef noodle soups which they said were good too, but I will be coming back specifically for their Bo Lac Luc again! After we were done we noticed some dude riding around on his bike in the parking lot going by all the parked cars. Make sure you don't leave anything within sight in your car. Visiting family in San Rafael and wanting pho is tough. Haha. This was the best rated spot on yelp and we decided to give it a shot. It's really easy to miss. The turn into the lot is so hidden so pay attention! Head towards the back of the lot and bam, it's right on the corner. Plenty of parking available. Sanitize your hands before you get seated. This is a typical no frills, cheap, decent food spot. It gets the job done. #6 (combo pho) and #30 (special combo broken rice plate)...less than $40 including tip. The pho had tons of meat but the broth fell short. Still had some decent flavors and it wasn't oily. Noodles were plenty. The combo rice plate was better. Grilled pork chop, shredded pork, egg cake, tofu cake, and egg. My favorite was the tofu. The shredded pork was overwhelmingly dry. I definitely missed eating some broken rice though! This is a solid 3 stars. If I'm craving Vietnamese food when I'm in town again, this will be the spot. read more

This is good Vietnamese food a short drive from downtown San Rafael. Plenty of parking. Service is friendly and they have a clean restroom. You will love the beef noodle soups. The #16 ("Tai") is a safe bet and was delicious when I visited recently. There are two sizes and the Large is just $1 more than the Small, so you'll be tempted. Just know that the Small is plenty, especially if you want to leave room for an appetizer. Speaking of appetizers, the egg rolls (filled with a combination of shrimp and pork) slap and will get your taste buds warmed up for the upcoming flavor explosion of pho soup. You'll appreciate a quick stretch before that spicy, frenetic workout of slurping down a steaming bowl full of noodles that will leave you sweaty and reaching for a water bottle the rest of the day. The cube beef steak is one of the best dish I have ever eaten. It's absolutely legendary. We heard about it, came for it, and it's amazing. The beef melts in your mouth. It comes with steamed rice and bell peppers and onions just sautéed quickly. Sauce is great. Service was super fast and owner was adorable. Ambiance was great! Eat by the water! It is a good, fast kitchen with interesting menu items. It will not be my favorite Asian food place though. It has to many better option in Marin or even in San Rafael. Despite this, we did see a few people come & go & decided just to take our chances. While the food was great & portions decent, the staff members aren't too friendly. Since I decided to share the grilled pork chop w.my mom, i asked for an extra plate, there was no response so my mom asked & the gentleman seemed a little perturbed & finally answered "Yes, I heard". I was a little taken back, with his off standish mentality. As far as the dishes we ordered, we chose the Grilled Pork chop plates with the egg, shredded pork,salad & even soup for $12. The portions are pretty generous & I usually I don't drink the soup, but it paired well with the rice. The grilled pork chop was marinated well & grilled to perfection! It is my go-to dish whenever I'm not in the mood for Pho & the pork chop did not disappoint. Pho Viet used to have standards. From my most recent visit, it seems to be a thing of the past however. Pho: I went with a large #12, including thin slices of steak and well done brisket. The bowl was sizeable with a reasonable portion of noodles, but the entire bowl likely only had 5 measly slices of dry, over-cooked beef. The dish was served with a limited selection of vegetables to add in, with some basil and bean sprouts. I asked for cooked bean sprouts as it tends to have a more mild flavor and a better bite in my opinion, but it was served uncooked. When I brought up my concern to the staff, I was instead dismissed and told that it was cooked. I was quite surprised that they didn't include other standard items with the pho, such as the lime or jalapenos. The broth was somewhat lighter than usual. Bun Bo Hue: A watered down tasting broth with limited toppings as well. I was not particularly impressed. It was also not served with the usual cabbage, which when we asked the staff they were surprised by the request and subsequently prepared it at that point. Overall, I was quite disappointed by the flavors, the portions for meat, the toppings provided, and the service. I used to have good experiences at Pho Viet, but after this most recent experience, I'll be going elsewhere instead. read more

Dreaming of pho from here as I write this. This is a true comfort food from a local authentic Vietnamese treature located in the North Bay of the San Fransisco Bay Area. The service begins with water out, and drink ordering, then food ordering. Very nice staff. A short time after ordering they bring out a plate of bean sprouts with basil and sliced lime come out to accompany each bowl of pho that was ordered. The drinks always come out as soon as possible and are very sweet and yummy. Not long after recieving the plate of bean sprouts and and basil, the piping hot bowls of pho arrive at the table. I like dressing my bowl with hot chili oil, siracha, hoi sin sauce, bean sprouts, fresh squeezed lime juice and basil. Pho Viet always delivers consistent service and delicous food. You're gonna have to look for this place, but once you've found it you'll be glad you did. It's down a long driveway, off East Francisco Blvd on the working side of town, at the back of a strip mall, by the pier. There is nothing fancy about Pho Viet; it's just a homey atmosphere. It really feels like being at friend's house. The pho is so very "home made" and the family run operation makes you feel, at once, like a special guest in a familiar place. This is the kind of place where it's ok to watch the TV and have a kitchen table meal. I like to go and watch a game, have a beer, some Vietnamese comfort foods and visit with friends. I love their deep fried egg rolls. I knew them as "Imperial Rolls" when I used to get them a lot at my favorite place in the Mission back when I was an urchin. They still warm me right up. I have yet to be able to finish all the pho, I almost always have to take some home, which makes for a second meal! We also had an eggplant dish, may have been a special, that was good.
