I cannot believe how they remain in business with such a nasty customer service. I have been here handful of times and despite having the good food service has always been a big issue here. Rude and disrespectful servers, slow service to the point you think you owe them something by stepping foot in their restaurant. I visited this place over and over because I usually come with a big group but from now on I will strongly oppose to go. Came here for their booked events which actually come out to a fair deal per person. Appetizers come out quickly (even to a booked event hall of 50) and standouts include the labni and baba ghanoj. Personal favorite are the warak mean grape leaves. Entrees are solid with plenty of pita bread to go around. I've been coming here over several years enough time to see their portions shrink. The last time I was there I noticed the soup had been watered down which was disappointing. I suspect they're just trying to survive the today by making/saving a dollar wherever they can. The best part of the restaurant is the facility itself. Nice open air seating with room for everyone. I go during off hours to avoid the parking shortage, poor service, and overall delays, so I can't critique their hookah service. The food is great. Some of my favorite dishes are the fatoush and itch. It always comes out a little different though (like sometimes you get more rice, sometimes less). Came here for Fathers Day for the first time with my sister and dad. I misunderstood the opening time, so we arrived a half hour early. The server, Casanova, was super sweet and apologized for the wait even though it was our fault. They brought us some baklava on the house with our Armenian coffee (which was excellent)! Casanova was super nice to us, and told my dad happy Fathers day and shook our hands at the end. It was such a lovely experience and the food was excellent. We had a huge event at this restaurant, we paid half cash and half on the card, the card we had was an international card, after we left the manager charged our card an extra 500$! I don't know how she did that, but after we got home late at night, I got a text, saying my card has been charged! I called the restaurant and asked the manager about the 500! She said you must have given me less cash that's why I charged you! I don't know what happened to this place. Used to be my favorite. They must have changed owners. I remember the older guy standing around to make sure everything was all ok. Staff has changed for sure. I wish I could give them zero star. We walked in with reservation but there was no one to greet or sit us. We waited around for 10 15 min. Food was ok but staff never came to check to see if we needed anything else. We had to call em multiple time. Desert was part of set menu but we got charged for it. It arrived much larger than tea and coffee. Asked for coffee multiple times but never got it. Hookah guy never came to check on it, we called few times and finally showed up. Bill showed up without the booklet and our credit cards came back with just the receipt. I felt like $40 tip which was included was more than what they deserved. I remember pricing used to be higher and restaurant packed all the time but not anymore. Cheaper but yet empty. A very typical name for a Lebanese place. Phoenicia is the ancient name for Lebanon, and the very proud Lebanese (especially the Maronite Christians) often refer to their selves not as Arabs, but as Phoenicians. The owner of Phoenicia, Ara Kalfayan (yes an Armenian from Beirut's once huge Armenian community) was once a partner in the Mandaloun venture. When the two owners parted ways, Phoenicia was opened. The restaurant is located off the beaten path on Central and Lexington. Its just a block west and up a bit from Brand Boulevard's landmark Carousel and the nearby Mandaloun (which is a block to the east of Brand). I still prefer the less pretentious East Hollywood for straight grubbing (Carousel on Hollywood or Marouch on Santa Monica) the Glendale venues are all about entertaining large groups. The weekend evening fixed menu is the tried and true mix of Lebanese and Armenian appetizers with perhaps a very slight nod to the former Soviet Armenians who often bring large groups to celebrate things as simple as a child's baptism with tons of vodka and lots of food. Often the kids come and party or pass out late into the evening. Here is the Plus/Minus Plus: +the owner, Mr. Kalfayan is a gentleman and will do his best to accommodate a group or any special requests +the outdoor, covered, heated patio (though not as nice as Mandaloun's) is a nice spot for an after dinner nergila/hookah session. +there is a full bar +the wine list is fair and affordable with $20-$30 bottles of Ksara and Chateau Kefraya, but for a Lebanese place it is missing the flagship Lebanese wine and perhaps the only true heavyweight contender . . . Chateau Musar +many appetizers are decent, especially the "muhammara" (red pepper paste, bread crumbs, walnuts, pine nuts, and pomegranate syrup) a great dish to whet the appetite +decent kibbe nyee (raw appetizer made with beef or lamb or veal, mixed with "bulghur" (cracked wheat) and spices +nice touch to wrap the kebab in lavash bread (very authentic Armenian touch) to keep it warm +the chicken kebab was nicely done and not overcooked +the fatayer or beoreg (hot cheese pastry) was nice (albeit smallish) Minus: -the arak (anise flavored liquor) was served in tall shot glasses with ice. Where to start . . . a tall shot glass is OK if the arak is neat, otherwise, most folks who drink arak like it cloudy with a splash of water and ice. If in a shot glass, its near impossible to swirl the glass and marry the flavors -the cold appetizers were pre-set on the table for our group of 12 . . . even if they are cold appetizers, its nicer to wait for people to arrive and quickly set the table (otherwise it seems like the food has been sitting there a while) -grill a few more vegetables with the kebab (they're not expensive and its sad to see one lonely grilled tomato with a big plate of kebab . . . who gets the tomato? the guest? the person who drove the farthest to get there?) -its very LOUD in there . . . the live bands were very loud for the surroundings . . . I guess their amps go to 11? You cannot have a conversation without yelling . . . even the dinner music was set to 11 -the ceiling is quite low . . . I only noticed this when a drunk Armenian guy tried to balance his ouzo on his head when he heard Greek music -the hummus was whipped like cake batter . . . I'm not a fan of the pseudo-hummus (i.e. Tuscan rustic hummus with chunks of chick peas, but this was almost like a milk shake) -the wine list is the size of a billboard (hard to show to people or pass on) -the kebab? I guess Carousel Hollywood should sponsor a seminar on how to marinate and grill beef, because this shish kebab tasted like liver - - the rice pilaf? Akkkhhhhh . . . a sad looking plate with a teaspoon to serve the rice?? Rice pilaf is often a centerpiece, but not this one . . . Its not expensive to make, so pile the plate high . . . I'm glad I did not have relatives in my group of 12 . . . first of all, rice pilaf should have something more than just buttered and salted rice . . . i.e. some fine noodles sauteed in clarified butter or perhaps pinenuts or almond slivers, but not just rice . . . that's for Chinese restaurants . . . and use a serving spoon or at least a big tablespoon . . . forget that! a serving spoon is a must! -the fattouche salad? when will Lebanese (who should know better) stop putting lettuce in their fattouche? Yes, Americans like lettuce in their salad, but fattouche is not supposed to have lettuce . . . why you ask? because lettuce wilts relatively fast and fattouche is supposed to be very crunchy (just tomatoes, cucumbers, green onions, purslane when in season, and toasted pita bread is enough . . . parsley or mint optional . . . olive oil, lemon, salt and sumac . . . that's it, I just gave the recipe) All in all, this place ranks 3rd behind Carousel and Mandaloun in the Glendale Big 3 . . . its solid, but has much room for improvement read more

After about two years of not visiting Phoenicia we decided to go last night. We sat outside, the weather was perfect, the appetizers were amazing, the kebabs were great. My entire party fell in love with the food and the flavors and quality of the ingredients, I myself was shocked how homemade everything tasted. No one approached us when we entered to greet us so we awkwardly waited in the middle next to seated tables for someone to come up to us. The ashta dessert was amazing. Never been to a place with service this horrible! We arrived with a large party and reservations made over a week ago for the inside hall. They had overbooked and couldn't fit us inside and sat us outside in 100 degree heat. Took over 20 minutes just to get water! I couldn't believe the amount of neglect the waiters and waitresses had towards us. After they brought us water, they asked us to move to another table under the sun. The waiter didn't even pass drinks and food around when he eventually did bring them. He just left it on one side of the table and we had to pass it around for everyone. This place is absolutely horrible. I can continue writing this review with an endless list of negatives but I'll keep it short to keep it legible. I really wanted to like this place but sadly it needs help. I live about a block away and my cousin and I came here for lunch and to grab some hookah. I found street parking so can't speak on the valet, but can attest to everything else. Drinks: alcohol is either poured way too heavy or is non existent (my drink was pure liquor and my cousins was juice). Food: It was just okay honestly, nothing mind blowing or delicious to the point where I'd return. There are a lot of other places in Glendale where you can get incredible food for the same price. Social distancing: not enforced whatsoever! I've been hearing about restaurants not seating more than 6 people to a table...well not here there were parties of 12+ dining on a Saturday afternoon. Service: this is where they really tanked. They had 2 servers working on a Saturday afternoon with about 20 full tables. The servers are responsible for drinks, food, hookah and bussing the tables. Takes a pretty long time to get anyone's attention and once you do they forget what you needed(good luck flagging them down again). Our hookah was burning about 10 minutes into sitting down (packed in an apple which was pretty odd- and the holes poked in the foil were far too large so obviously it burned). Overall save yourself the trouble and take your time and money somewhere they actually provide a pleasant experience. read more

Sadly, on Saturday 4.27.19 we wanted to give Phoenicia a try, however you can't rate the food if you're not served. We waited over 15 minutes as servers just walked by not even giving us a glance. Prior to that we had to ask where to sit, we always approached the staff, they never reached out to us. We did notice patrons there, I couldn't say for certain, but mostly all of them looked middle eastern and were being well taken care of with prompt service, bowing and smiles as we were not. I am saying something, you can read between the lines. No problem, we voted with our feet and I'm sharing our experience online. Another issue was there was what appeared to be a dirty homeless man handling food ware who badly needed a shower walking around in the restaurant talking to himself. So, you can venture into the Phonicia and perhaps have a great experience, I hope you do. However, we will not be going back and if anyone asked me, I will suggest they look at other venues. Went with my family to this place last week and what a disaster it was!! Let's start with the food. Everything was cold and tasted like it was straight out of the fridge. Lamb chops had very gamey taste and cold. Chicken was like eating rubber. Steak was chewy. I don't know if anything tasted good other than the cheese and pita bread. Very sad to see how they have went down the drain. Service was probably worse than the food. It took forever just to get anything. Hookah didn't make it till our food was taken away. It took almost 2 hours for the hookah to show up. What a joke! BTW the owner was present and when we expressed our dissatisfaction he did nothing about it whatsoever. Let me say we were a party of 15 people and that was a nice fat check!! One of my favorite Lebanese cuisines in Los Angeles. The food is exceptional, as I am a huge fan of the shawerma, falafel, and kabeb plates. However, their hookah lacks flavor - - and is the main reason why I would rate this restaurant a four, rather than a five. Arev is just as her name states, pure sun and delight. She is the heart and soul of the restaurant and makes sure that all customers are happy. Friday and Saturday nights often tend to be extremely crowded (I would recommend making reservations) as there is live entertainment. Plus, you won't hear a single table conversing in English, if you're comfortable with that. The food here is good but I have had better. Mezzes are a safe bet. On the contrary, Carousel and Skaf's have excellent Lebanese food. The only perk here is that they serve hookah as well and are open late. They only have Alfahker flavors, which is pretty ancient in the hookah world. They serve apple heads-- it is a nice gesture but the flavor burns very fast. They only serve Lipton tea.
