Interior is pretty spacey with seating. We got the fresh mango mochi, durian mochi, and the mango pomelo sago and silken tofu. I wanted to see if it tasted like taho but it's a bit different, would probably get just the regular version without pomelo next time though. It's unfortunate that they closed shortly after my visit. Despite having "dessert" in the name, I actually found the savory items to be the highlights of the meal. Near the entrance was a display case filled with premade chilled items. Quantities were limited, and because we visited close to closing time, many of the savory dishes had already sold out. A single employee managed both the register and food service. She was incredibly generous with portions, though the self serve style setup seemed less than ideal from a food safety perspective. Prices were also noticeably lower than comparable spots in the Convoy area. *Assorted Mochi: these were served chilled from the display case and had a denser texture than most mochi. The fillings were not overly sweet, which I appreciated. The Green Tea Black Sesame was my favorite, as the earthy flavors complemented one another beautifully. The mango version was much more subdued and ultimately the least memorable. *Mango Lovers Dessert: chewy coconut jelly noodles drenched in tart mango sauce. The ice cream provided most of the sweetness, while the noodles and tofu remained fairly neutral. The portion was enormous and could easily be shared among two to four people. *Durian Lovers Dessert: similar to the mango version in that it leaned surprisingly mild. The young coconut and purple sticky rice lacked the sweetness needed to balance the dish. That said, the amount of durian was impressive. I just wished there had been a creamier or silkier component to contrast the dense textures. *Arctic Surf Clams: easily my favorite item. The clams were marinated in a spicy, peppery sauce and cooked perfectly, retaining a pleasant chew without becoming rubbery. *Ube Fried Mochi: wonderfully crisp on the outside with a satisfyingly dense interior. The ube filling was subtly sweet and fragrant, and the fritters were not greasy at all. Each order came with six generously sized pieces, making them an excellent value. I'm genuinely sad to see this business close. It was one of the more affordable dessert spots in the area, and as a durian lover, it's disappointing to lose another place that showcased the fruit. I usually like Phoenix Dessert, and this San Diego location was amazing. I love their black sticky rice with young coconut it's so fragrant, soft, and perfectly sweet , $5.95 was very affordable . The black sesame dessert was a bit firmer than I prefer, but still was delicious. This is such a cool spot with so many food and dessert options. They have durian, mango, passionfruit, taro , lots of fun ingredients, and it's honestly enjoyable just browsing through everything. Stopped by after dinner to satisfy my sweet tooth and decided to try their Mango Lovers Dessert. It was good- light, refreshing, and packed with mango flavor. The portion is definitely shareable, it would've been way too much for me to finish on my own. I've had their durian rolls a few times prior, but was in the mood for something more refreshing and the mango lovers delivered. I did have an uncomfortable moment before going in- there was some inappropriate activity happening outside the shop, which made me feel a bit sketchy and unsure at first. When we went inside, the place was completely empty. But not long after, people started trickling in. Overall, I'd recommend stopping by if you're craving something fruity and refreshing. Hands down some of the best mango mochi I've had. The texture was absolutely perfect. soft, pillowy, and just the right amount of chew without being too dense. What really stood out was the mango inside, incredibly fresh, naturally sweet, and bursting with flavor. You can tell they're using high-quality fruit. The balance between the delicate mochi and the juicy mango was spot on, making each bite light yet satisfying. Not overly sweet, just clean, fresh, and refreshing. Normally I stop by Extraordinary Desserts when I'm down in San Diego but needing to cut down on sugar, I had to choose my treat for the most recent trip. Since it's currently only available in So Cal, my wanting to try Phoenix's durian mochi rolls for almost 2 years now, won out especially since they have opened up a San Diego location. There are more Phoenix Desserts in the LA areas that I've been to before. Very happy to find this one in San Diego. It's a small shop with limited items and a few small tables inside. I always like their mochi and their custard with different flavors. They're all delicious especially if you have a sweet tooth. There are a few HK street food and a few cold dishes available. The cold tofu platter, the chicken wings, and samosa are all good. The curry fish ball is a bit disappointing and wish they use the white fish balls that are not fried. Be aware they only get shipments from LA on certain days, so they can run out of certain popular desserts. It would be nice if they open more locations. read more

The mango lovers dessert is a shareable (2-3 ppl) with layers of sago, mangoes, coconut jelly noodles, 1 scoop of vanilla ice cream and tofu pudding. The jelly noodles were my favorite. This was my first time eating something like it. It had a mild coconut flavor that paired well with everything. The tofu pudding had a slightly sour taste so I didn't really it, though I'm not sure if this was because the mangos were also a bit sour. I ordered the assorted mochi (4: mango, green tea with sesame paste, red bean, and taro) for take out. All great flavors, not too sweet, and with a nice mochi outer skin. Refreshing, tart, and slightly sweet. Will definitely help to cleanse your palette after a meal. I think this was my favorite item, of the three that I got. 2) The Assorted Custard Platter (3/5). I think this was good to get, to try all the flavors w/o totally committing to one flavor. Glad I did, bc the creamier ones were my favorite, ie the Coconut Taro (3 layers, with textural contrast), and the Mango. The passionfruit was OK, and the dark one with coconut bits, sadly had no flavor at all. 3) I tend to ask the people who work there what their personal favorites are--today's clerk said the Mango Mochi. Unfortunately, my taste buds must differ from hers. I was a bit disappointed at how much and how dense the dough was; it's not really the Japanese type mochi, with the signature stretchy chew, that you think of with mochi. It's a piece of fresh mango, wrapped in rice flour, coated with coconut flakes. I wouldn't get this again (2/5). Really cool and unique dessert shop with a fairly extensive menu. We opted to get a few of the fresh desserts displayed in the window. The black Sesame and Almond (jelly? I forgot exactly what it was called) was really good and had subtle flavors, nothing overpowering. It has a gelatin bite to it. The mochi was also really good and I would say that texturally, it was a bit softer than other ones I've had. And for those that can endure and enjoy durian, the durian coconut cake is a must get. Personally I'm not a huge fan of durian but this form of dessert made it the most palatable way. The durian flavor is very strong and so if you know you don't like that, I recommend going for a different flavor. But since you don't see much durian flavored desserts, I figured I had to try it. Customer service is always welcoming!! They let us taste test a couple of products and it's delicious!! The place has seating indoors and outdoors. The indoor is a little small but cozy. They have ready food, cookies, soy milk, and different tea. I really like the soy milk and the tea. I tried the sago, but it was a bit undercooked. I've tried it twice, but I didn't like the undercooked sago. The durian mochi is yummy. I've also tried a couple of the jelly, and that was good also. Established in the mid-1960s, Phoenix Dessert has now made its way down to San Diego with the first store located in the Crossroads Center of Kearny Mesa where a short-lived Filipino dessert chain had operated. The business seems to have a solid following of enthusiasts with a dozen locations in the LA area. During the soft opening last month, the line stretched well outside the front entrance. The inside of the suite had limited seating with a few tables and a countertop by the front window. I had never visited Phoenix Dessert before so the mix of savory and sweet offerings plus drinks was intriguing. Mango and durian seemed to be prominent fruits used in the desserts. With the word 'dessert' in the business name, I did not expect Curry Chicken and Portuguese Beef Stew as menu items. Small fried appetizers are more common for Asian dessert shops but not entrees like those above. On my first trip, I ordered the Assorted Mochi which came in four pieces and a Mixed Fruit Delight for a drink. The fresh mochi flavors in the package were mango, green tea black sesame, red bean, and black sticky rice coconut milk. The little balls were the softest mochi I have ever tasted. The black sticky rice coconut milk was the most unusual flavor of the group. Fresh mango, watermelon, honeydew, tapioca, sago, coconut milk blend, and shaved ice were the ingredients in the Mixed Fruit Delight. The mixture was naturally sweet from the fruits and much healthier than my normal fruit green tea with boba pearls. I bought a Fresh Fruit Delight and a Marinated Tofu Platter on the next visit. Mango was my pick of fruit for the drink which had the same other non-fruit ingredients. The cold platter was a plastic container filled with several strips of fried tofu skin, slices of marinated tofu, seaweed, and soba noodles. The tofu and noodles were fine, however the seaweed had a really strong flavor that overpowered everything else. The variety of choices was impressive for this dessert chain while the quality of the food and drink was above average. Those aspects and the reasonable prices were the reasons why I rated my two experiences at Phoenix Dessert with a four star rating. read more

I really love the desserts here. I think this is the first Phoenix Desserts in the San Diego area but I hope they will open up more shops in time. Their mochi is super delicious. Even though they have a lot of flavors, my favorite is still the mango mochi-a fresh soft mochi covering juicy chunks of fresh sweet mango...yum!! As someone from Hong Kong, I'm so excited to find a place that specializes in Hong Kong dessert and street food! There are lots of different options - drinks, cold dessert liked panna cotta, steamed milk, mango rolls, hot "soupy" desserts, egg waffles, ice cream, and more. Although it's not the full restaurant, there's some meals but they focus mostly on the desserts, as the name implies. Plenty of parking here but way too small of a seating area. Our orders came out in to-go containers so I think their theme is more of a grab-and-go kind of establishment. Curry Fish Balls: Comes with 6 balls, pretty light curry flavor. While the fish balls had a nice, bouncy texture, I thought the curry was a little lacking. The curry by itself was good but it just didn't really stick onto the fish balls. Other than that, it's a nice snack. Mixed Fruit Delight: I would always get this drink, back before milk tea really blew up. There's bits of mango, watermelon and honeydew, mixed in with sago. The base is a sweet, coconut milk blend. This tastes just as I remembered, super refreshing on a hot day! Silken Tofu and Mango: Also known as douhua, the tofu is super silky and creamy. I normally enjoy this with the sweet, ginger sauce but the mango is a nice change! There's a ton of other mango desserts and durian if you're into that! Located in the same lot as Carl's Jr and Rubio's test kitchen. I'm so happy they opened a location in San Diego and everyone here is soooo nice!! They were also patient while we were trying to choose what to order! It was a hot day on the day we went and I was super impressed when one of the staff asked if I wanted ice packs under my bag to keep my items cool since I was driving at least 20 minutes to my next destination! As for their desserts, I love their mochi and puddings! My fave are the fresh mango rolls or mochi. The mochi skin is Soo soft and perfect amount of chewiness while the Mango inside is never tart and it's not overly Sweet at all. Their sago pudding is really good as are their fresh made tapioca and sago desserts. They also have a variety of small snack items as well.
