this place was too overhyped tbh. knowing it's a big chain in LA, I had high expectations for a new Hong Kong style dessert cafe and was sad that it didn't live up to the hype. I got the mango pomelo tofu, which was really sweet. the mango overpowered their house made tofu and I think I got like, a dozen pomelo kernels in my bowl. you can get better versions of this at hui lau shan. I didn't try their mochi or other desserts so maybe I'll give them another chance? it's also kind of pricey for what it is. read more

I am so happy that Phoenix has finally made its way down to San Diego!! I've been to the ones in LA countless of times and when they had one in Irvine, we used to drive up there for it. It's their soft opening right now and also this location will only have drinks, desserts, and a few small bites unlike the ones in LA. The place is a bit small and has room for 3 small tables inside. This will probably be a takeout place. My go to is the mixed fruits delight. It's chopped up watermelon, honeydew, and mango with sago and coconut milk. This time I also got a few other desserts to try. Mango roll which the owner said was one of the most popular. Can't believe I never got it before. And also got a mango pudding a friend recommended. I also tried their salt spicy wings which had a great flavor and was fried really well. Curry fish balls were also good. It did take a really long time for the hot food to come out, but I get they're working out their logistics with a soft opening. I was SO EXCITED when they opened in SD! I grew up with their locations in the 626 area, specifically Rowland Heights. This location is a small store but still has many of the desserts and drinks that I love. My favorite is the durian mochi with coconut flakes; it's one of the only stores I know that consistently sell durian desserts. I also got their jello platter and my favorite is always the one with purple rice. The flavors are nostalgic and the prices are not extreme compared to other places that sell fresh fruit desserts. This location doesn't have as many hot food items, but they still sell the cold side dishes like spicy cucumber, marinated pig ears, tofu, etc. If you're stuck on which drink to get, PLEASE try the mixed fruit tapioca drink that contains coconut milk, tapioca, honeydew and watermelon bits! And if you're a fan of durian, they don't skimp you on portions here! Each treat was delicious. I hope they keep the recipe the same. We also tried their egg puff waffle. This was just okay. Nothing special, and for almost $9, idk if it was really worth it because they didn't offer any toppings or syrups to go with it, so it was kind of plain. But the waffle itself was cooked to perfection. The braised beef was good. Could be slightly more tender and flavorful. And it's kind of odd that they would charge you $2 for rice, when this street food/ small eats would normally be paired with rice to enjoy as they compliment one another. The drinks were refreshing. Came here because I had a huge durian craving and ordered the Durian kaya roll for pickup. The girl helping me was super helpful and said there was a promo going on and all the items were durian so I ordered from there as well and got the durian sago milk. The durian sago milk was super good and the durian kaya rolls were just alright. I like their selection and they have some unique desserts that I have not seen elsewhere such as durian desserts and different varieties of sticky rice. I am not a fan of durian but I came here with two others who do like durian and they liked the black sticky rice with durian. Went to try out this place and realized it was where Snoice used to be! Walked in and the young ladies immediately greeted us and offered samples. They were so sweet and we had a great time trying out the samples and choosing what we wanted. We haven't been to the location in LA so we have nothing to go by but we were pleasantly surprised. Don't know if they have changed owenership, but the quality of food has gone way downhill since its opening. Their durian roll used to be creamy and contained ripe durian pieces. However, today the durian roll was dry and tasteless, felt like they had been sitting in the fridge for a long time. Most Asian dessert places offer a decent Mango pudding. We found the mochi heaven at Phoenix Dessert. They have so many varieties of mochi that will satisfy most mochi lovers. We tried all sorts of fresh mochi but the one that really stuck out was the coconut mango rolls. They used fresh mango and the mochi was doughy, thin, and incredibly tasty. This is more or less a traditional Taiwanese/Chinese dessert shop, a chain store of a popular brand but sorry, there's no boba. Sago is going to be as close as you're gonna get. You're gonna find flavor profiles that are along the lines of coconut, red bean, black sesame and mango. Also the sweetness levels are toned down a bit in comparison to the usual American fare. That being said, the service is always friendly, the location does not get too crowded as many take the orders to go and the space is clean. Our family's favorite dessert is the mango lovers bowl with fresh chunks of mango, strings of tapioca, soft tofu, a scoop of mango ice cream and some other ingredients :) This particular dessert requires a fork and spoon, and sharing is definitely optional! I also enjoy their variety of panna cottas that are cut into cubes. The variety packs allow you to enjoy a little bit of everything. The mochi are not my favorite. They don't have the texture of Japanese mochi and the fillings are not my fave. The mango pomelo (like mild white grapefruit) sago drink is a popular item but the sago tends to be overcooked and lack chew. The base appears to be a combination of coconut milk with another white substance, maybe milk or a non-dairy product? I've never asked. We haven had any of their savory snacks. Definitely worth visiting just for these. They offered me a few samples as well which I don't remember the names of, but they were delicious and I was tempted to buy them as well. I didn't order any drinks besides water 'coz I'm not so sure if what I ordered would be very sweet or not, but wow, everything that we had wasn't too sweet, it was just the right amount of sweetness. I had the strangest interaction with the owner. I left my car keys at the store last night and called this morning to confirm that they were there. My friend who lived 10 minutes away went into the store to confirm they were mine (I live 1 hour away) so I didn't waste a trip. The owner refused to let him see the keys and send me a photo to ensure they were mine, so I made the drive to get them. The owner had me start my car with the keys in front of him, but wouldn't give me back my post office key because "it looked like his and I could steal his mail." He ended up in a verbal argument with my boyfriend, accused me of not even coming into the store last night, and was confused how I was able to drive my vehicle today with my spare key. This new dessert stop is located in the Carl's Jr. lot so parking was easy. It replaced the old Snoice. My husband and I stopped by on a whim and would definitely return! Here's what we got this time: -Purple yam & durian mochi rolls (2 for $7.95): The purple yam lends a nice nutty flavor, but it's pretty subtle because of the durian. These have some heft to them, and it's because they're chock full of fresh durian! I like durian to punch me in the face if I'm getting something with durian, and this did not disappoint. It's mainly durian with a thin purple yam mochi wrapping. Must get if you're a durian lover! Warn others to stay away and hold their breath if they don't like durian. -Assorted creme custard (4 for $6.75): This assortment came with green tea & red bean, purple yam & red bean, coconut & red bean, and passionfruit. They were all solid, although I personally liked the green tea and passion fruit because of the floral flavors. The custard is like a less sweet version of panna cotta with Asian flavors. -Steamed egg with milk and ginger ($5.25): This is a classic that you should try if you like custard. Don't be put off by the steamed egg. Yes, it does taste like egg, but it's not overwhelming because of the ginger. It's also not too sweet and very smooth. If you like getting tofu with ginger syrup at dim sum, then give this a shot. They have both kinds of steamed egg here (with egg yolks and without). Since it's their soft opening, please be patient as they work out kinks. In addition to drinks and desserts, they will offer small bites. If you grew up with your mom feeding you the black extracted water from the mixture of various sticks, bark, and roots the Chinese apothecary said you needed to cure your illness/weakness, you will know the taste of this drink. It is so strong and unpleasant, it often causes me to gag. If you are not familiar with Chinese herbal remedies, it tastes like drinking the smell of fresh garden compost. If you are all about Chinese herbal medicine, this drink is for you. Conveniently packaged, no need to boil a claypot on your stove for hours or strain out bits of bark fragments before drinking! Chyrsanthemum Tea. This is the most legitimate Chrysanthemum tea I have found for sale without having to boil your own flowers on the stove. Not very sweet and very concentrated. If you like the unhealthy sugar water versions with a touch of Chrysanthemum, you may want to use this bottle as concentrated stock to dilute with sugary water. Assorted Mochi. So soft and stretchy. The mochi skin is such a delight to eat. The fillings are a bit more unique here. For instance, the matcha filling also has a matcha-black sesame taste while the mochi skin taste reminiscent of matcha latte.
