this have been my favorite spot to go since i've started collecting video games. Chris always hooking me up whenever he can. once he sold me a working Atari 7800 with 2 games, an entertainment center to me. he wanted to sell it to me personally because based on what i told him, he wanted me to have it because i appreciate my game systems and play them unlike other collectors that just have them just to have them. this is where he hooked me up with a price and i bought off of him. 150 bucks, not too bad since we tested it and got some atari 2600 games as well. definitely check this place out, they won't have rare games around, but if they do they'll give it to you if you ask. also they'll set you up with a phone service when they don't have the item you're looking for. can't say enough of this spot. read more

Little disappointed as I called about selling an old Xbox 360 console. When I get down there I am told they won't buy it because it's not a slim model. Apparently my larger model has issues crashing (which mine has never done as long as I've owned it) If it's that big an issue maybe ask a few questions on the phone before I drive over just to be told no. read more

If they don't have the games you're looking for leave your name on the wait list. They call back about availability same day and offer 1 day holds on desired items. Very friendly staff. Most used game stores employ snarky, elitist gamers. That isn't the case here. Every time I'm in they make me want to come back. Phoenix Games is by far 1 of the best stores I have ever been to. They have tons of classics to modern released games! I am a regular here I go to buy Sega Genesis games or dreamcast. This place is really awesome. The staff here are great. No matter how dumb my questions are they give me a respectful answer. They even helped me find a copy of a game that they didn't have, at a competitors store. I really like the pinball machines too. I feel like I can play them all day without being kicked out. I've spent extended periods of time checking out games only to not buy anything and they didn't seem to mind. I never feel rushed. I just wish I could find a gameboy micro. I can't seem to find them anywhere besides online. So I can't blame them. I will be back! read more

I was in the East Bay with a friend today, and I spotted this place off of Clayton rd. The store moved from its old Treat Blvd. space to a brand new location, and I have to say it is OUTSTANDING. Not only do they command one of the largest retrogaming selections I have ever SEEN in my gaming travels (everything from vintage Atari 2600, to original Game Boy, to bona fide SEGA Genesis carts), they have a mini-arcade in the back. The lineup is all-star, including: Donkey Kong (ORIGINAL 1981 machine), Mario Bros. (1983), an actual NEO-GEO MVS (features Viewpoint and Aero Fighters 2), an ORIGINAL Centipede machine, an ORIGINAL Asteroids Deluxe machine (1980), and an original Defender II machine. The staff is top notch, and knowledgeable about gaming. Heck, I showed off a DOS emulator on my phone with the original Duke Nukem on it, and they remembered the days back before it was an FPS! Absolutely awesome people I would love to work for someday, if I could ever get a way to commute there. If you are a retrogamer, I absolutely recommend it. They are truly the cream of the gaming crop. Move over GameStop, I just found my new retrogame fix. read more

They are well-maintained and in good shape and a great selection of really top titles. This place is a hidden treasure for me. There's no place that can take me back to when I was 15 years old, & enjoy that Arcade feel. Those 2D sounds, old school arcade machines, pinball. Black lights, just like those underground arcade stores. On top of it all, its a store that sells games, trades, repairs. Even the location is great, many places to eat right on the block. The staff rocks, great customer service, helpful, & know their stuff. Really enjoy spending time with my 10 year old, or going alone. Like I said, goldmine ! read more

I've been going to phoenix games pretty regularly for a few months now. I normally browse ebay and other online game sellers, but I figured it wouldn't be bad to support a local business, especially when it's just down the street. I was tired of seeing places like Matt's Game Exchange or Comics and Cards (which used to inhabit the building that Phoenix Games is in right now) go out of business. I have spent quite a large sum of money here, probably more than I should have spent on video games. The staff is pretty nice once you start going in regularly, otherwise they might come off as shy or detached at first, but they are knowledgeable nonetheless, and if you have a question about any game they more than likely will be able to answer it for you. I love this store and look forward to each and every visit~ read more

Some people like antique shops, I love retro game shops. I drove all the way to Concord in hopes of finding some cool Super Nintendo games however, they didn't have what I was looking for. So, why five stars? Because the dude who runs this place was really awesome, and let me try out whatever game I wanted to buy, for as long as I wanted. They had a huge selection of PS2 games so I picked up a few considering I made the trip out there. Phenox also has a few arcade games, and a couple of consoles hooked up to flat screen TV's so customers can try out games. They also sell replacement parts and cords for vintage hard to find consoles. They definitely are not into ripping people off on over priced games every thing they sell is pretty accurate even cheap by comparison. I hope to be back here in the future when Phenox receives more Super Nintendo games. read more

For sure the best video game store in the bay area. Best selection for games and systems. Super Clean store as well. The best part about this store though is the customer service for sure though. Always greeted when I come in. when you pick out a game you can test it out. which is an awesome option. Whenever I buy games the always "line them up". Test them and clean them and what not. The employees are super cool. I asked about how to play Joust and the employee totally broke it down perfect. The only setback, which is pretty minor, is that the nes and snes games are behind glass. They unlock the case and stand there. I like to take my time picking out games and having a guy waiting next to me makes me feel rushed.. read more

First, the positives. The staff is extremely friendly, knowledgeable, and easy-going. They also have several arcade machines in the back, and their prices are about right. Now, the bad. It's only one thing but it really killed my chances of coming here again. Their selection of rare NES, SNES, and Genesis games is pretty awful. Don't get me wrong, they have a good selection of common games, and are usually well-stocked on console mainstays such as Streets of Rage 2 or most any Mario game. But I went there with the express purpose of spending more money than I should to buy some treasures and walked away with a few solid yet unexciting commons. Please keep in mind that I am only reviewing their NES, SNES, and Genesis game selection. I'm usually not interested in other consoles, and their selection of those games may indeed be quite vast. read more

Bought an NES, 2 controllers, Zapper, and Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt for a very fair price. The console was in really good shape, same with controllers, etc. My favorite part of the experience going to Phoenix Games for the first time though was the customer service. Shawn was nice enough to take the time to suggest how to best clean old cartridges even though there were people in the store browsing. Great products, good prices, and excellent service! Stopped by here to pick up some PS3 games. Prices were much higher for a used game than craigslist or eBay. They were selling red dead redemption for 19.99 used. It's about the same price as GameStop so I won't be coming back for ps3 games here. Lots of cool pinball machines though read more

I recently moved to Walnut Creek and was looking for a vintage game shop for all my retro needs. Upon searching for a place I found a true gem: Phoenix Games. This place was amazing! When I came in there was a small fighting game tournament happening, which is awesome. More importantly, the employee behind the counter was very kind and attentive. I told him exactly what I was looking for (some old SNES carts) which they didn't have, BUT he said he'd put me on a list and call me as soon as they got some in! All that is well and good but, for me, the best part of this shop is the Pinball selection. They have at least a couple dozen amazing pins that are all in excellent condition. Even though I went in only to pick up a few SNES carts, I stayed for about 20-30 extra minutes just to throw some quarters in some pinball machines - and I had a blast! read more

It may not always have the one that you want, but I've found so many good titles in here for the Gamecube and SNES, the place is really groovy. The employees are mostly pretty cool, I talk to them from time to time, and they seem very knowledgeable about the games that they have. Phoenix Games is awesome! We regularly stop in and have found some really great finds in the past: weird NES multi-carts, low print run PS4 games, and some good random finds for PS1, SNES and the like. They also have a great selection of well maintained and regularly rotated pinball games, which we also love. We wouldn't be able to enjoy being gamers and collectors half as much without having a great store like theirs nearby. The employees are always really nice and helpful, and I'm glad to be able to snag games I'm looking for at a fair price from such kind folks. Keep keepin' it real guys! read more

This place is pretty good for retro games. Some selection is good, some bad.. depending on the console. GB/GBA, bad. NES, decent... lots of commons, some hidden gems. SNES, bad. Genesis, bad... lots of sports titles. PS1, ok. Dreamcast, ok. It also seems they don't go actively looking for rare/collectable/hidden gems and that they rely only on trade-in luck. Would be nice to see some more collectable or sought after stuff here. I'll be coming back regularly. read more

This is the greatest store of all time! They have an arcade, which is really fun! The arcade has some NES classics, and pinball machines. The game selection is very good, and no section is lacking in quantity. The quality of games is really good too! I got "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time" for Gamrcube for only $35! Speaking of that, the prices are amazing! They always have so many of every product, so the prices get lower! The PS2 section is the biggest, and the Gameboy/Color section has the least, but that's ok. I wish I could rate this 10/5 stars, because it is really that good. Screw other stores because this is the best! Also, they have some modern console games too! read more

Very cool retro game store. Although, I live no where close to here (took about 40 minutes to get here from Suisun) I dropped by with my friend today to check out the selection. And boy do they have a selection of classic games! They have a ton of SNES, Nintendo, Game Gear, Dreamcast, Genesis, Xbox 360, Wii and PS3 games. They're a little light on newer stuff, but I wasn't shocked since it's a retro store. They sell consoles as well that's really cool. My friend picked up a copy of a GBA game with the box still and a few older Wii titles. The owner of the store is very knowledgable and nice as well! They had a Smash Bros tournament going on and in the back they have pinball machines! It's a fun place overall and although I didn't pick up anything this time around I will definitely revisit this spot again! read more

I was told that they would be able to fix my ps4 so I paid up in full a couple days later i received a call telling me they were not able to fix it they still charge me more than half of what I paid I only got back $50 out of $150 I was just not satisfied very disappointed they kept most of the money and didn't even fix the problem smh! read more

This is really a great store. As I walked in, it had that feel of old 80's Video Games. I walked in to check out the place as I've always wanted to go into a good gaming store. It's amazing how many games they have there as it's a huge variety ranging from Atari-PS4/XBONE. I saw an NES on the wall going for $60 so I had to take it as there was only one and there were two being worked on. They have Games there for great prices and they even let you test out any game you're going to buy for clarity. I love this store, and I shall soon be visiting again. read more

When you walk into Phoenix games you are expecting something similar to Gamestop. The fact that they have games here is the only similarity. This shop is more unique as they also carry classic titles for older systems and collectors items from various times. The staff are very friendly and laid back. There are 4 awesome HDTVs setup in the back with excellent video game rumbling chairs that you can try out different games on before you buy them. They also hold tournaments there. In the back there is also some great pinball machines as well as some classic arcade games that change throughout the year. If you are a die hard gamer and appreciate the older stuff as well then you need to check this place out. read more

Went here the other day after calling to see if they had a copy of Ape Escape for the PS1. The guy on the phone told me he'd hold their last copy for me until I got there but when I mentioned that I had a copy that was broken he told me he'd attempt to resurface it with their machine for 4 dollars. After hearing that I got a about 7 other games I had that were broken and brought them over. Luckily he was able to resurface 4 of the 7 and told me he wouldn't even try the other 3 since it's 4 dollars a disc and there would be no point since it wouldn't work. The customer service was really good and the guys there really know alot about games and really care about them obviously. There's tons of cool knick knacks in there to look at like ROB and a Power Glove and such. And a lot of great games. I heard they'll even order you a game if you ask them to find a copy of something rare that's hard to get for a good price online. All in all I walked out of their store with 4 resurfaced games, 3 new games (lord of the rings, mgs2, soul calibur 3) and a new red ps2 controller for 60 bucks. That's a steal man, 7 games (albeit 4 I already owned but we're broken) and a controller for the price of a new game today. They also have tons of cool pinball machines and even a room where you can rent and play a game there if you wanted. They test every game right there for you to show you it works. I really wished I didn't live an hour away from the place cause I would be here every day looking for some classic games to pick up for my ps2 or SNES (although currently their SNES in store isn't too big) Regardless, if you like older games from your childhood and wanna take a walk down memory lane and get some great games for a great price this is the best store in the east bay for it. read more
