Our 19th hole was here today after a round of golf at Peacock Gap. Eight of us for lunch around 12:45pm. The ordering process remains the same - state what burger you want; what cheese if any; how you want it cooked; and how you want it dressed. What hubby & i disliked - the meat patty itself was very bland. No taste whatsoever. And they claim they serve beef from Niman Ranch which is a local source. Spoke to others in our group & they share same sentiments. And medium rare was rare. My medium was well done. And the brioche buns were not toasted enough. Pro - Fries and milkshakes were very good. Good, not great. Old school place, slipped a bit. Grew up at the original location in Mill Valley. Not sure if my taste is change or if the quality has gone further down. Last couple times I've been here. I keep hoping I just catch them on a mediocre night.. but the mediocrity is the only consistency felt lately. Medium rare burger, barely had any red/pink. Prep cuts on accompaniments was rough... tomato 1/4" one side, 1" the other. And I don't recall them, always putting the burger on top of the produce, but just made lettuce & onions soaked in grease. Bummed me out. Then the grill cooked, kept leaving the reach and open, and as a chef, it was impossible not to notice the raw meats over the prepped produce. Sigh. Oh well, times change and so do our standards. Too many new joints to power thru supporting a place that seems to have gotten complacent. I was excited to finally try this place. I've driven by it many times and it's usually busy. The service was great both people behind the counter were helpful and courteous. It's a clean hole-in-the wall place. The burger looked fantastic and it was cooked perfectly. The topping were fresh and plentiful. Unfortunately they use a ciabatta bun, cold. Dry, dry, dry. Indoor seating was very cramped and outside seating the chairs were horrible. I've never had actual food from here but this review is based on their shakes! This is my go to place for a real shake! I have tried two flavors (Oreo Mint & Coconut) and both were delicious! I had the mint one and my partner had the coconut one and we both agreed we would be back. We also had onion rings which were pretty standard onion rings not bad but nothing special. I will say the price was a bit hefty, for all 3 things I paid almost $30. The person who helped us was nice and they were pretty quick as well. read more

There's no question in my mind that both Barney's and The Counter (which are both burger chains) serve better burgers than this place.  That said, the burgers at Phyliss' are pretty darn good. I ate here on a whim the other day. Felt like a burger, but not a chain drive-thru. Phyllis' came up on Yelp and was only a few blocks away. Pulling up, the place has a 70's burger joint vibe. Not any 'atmosphere' really, but the kind of place that's been there for your whole life. The burger was hand-formed from fresh beef, cooked the way I asked, and served on a toasted bun. It was juicy and fresh, and rates up there with Val's in Hayward on my burger scale. Not a lot of seating, maybe room for eight or 10 people at five tables. Didn't matter, because I ate mine in the car. The only downside was that last night while I was Christmas shopping, I felt like a burger again. Nothing in the East Bay sounded good compared to what I had at Phyllis'. In-N-Out doesn't hold a candle, and even Nation's doesn't compare. Work brought meto the area and I had some spare time to catch a bite. I stumbled upon this local small business burger spot that looked promising. Not your typical minimal menu, they have different buns to choose from such as a classic burger bun, French bun and Ciabatta. I ordered the bbq bacon burger,curly fries and a strawberry shake. Along with a coke it added up to 25 bones, kinda steep but plenty of food. Mad at myself for finishing it all, summer body will be put on hold lol. The burger was big and messy but who am I to complain, my kinda party.
