I ran into the cutest little bakery running around Soho. It was my first day back in NYC after a few months of going home to ATL for family matters, and I was running on pure caffeine. That being said, I was also curious as to what restaurants and cafes were bumpin' and what had closed shop. My caffeine drop was running relatively low but I saw this cute little cafe and popped in for an iced cold brew to keep me going. I was greeted with an extensive menu of Greek food, espresso bar, and a wall of pastries, particularly baklava and other cookies. WOW. The thing that sold me were the MINI baklava pieces! Normally I like a good authentic piece of baklava, but the sweetness (for someone like me who doesn't have a sweet tooth) usually just kills me with a regular piece. However...MINIS...perfect bite-sized pieces of honey flakey goodness. They also have assorted flavors of baklava which blew my mind. I didn't know there were FLAVORS of this already good dessert. Their iced cold brew was also pretty good! I asked for light ice so I could maximize the coffee intake, and it totally hit the spot. Definitely check them out. I would come back and see how good their actual Greek dishes are. I'm a big fan of moussaka. It was tiny and the filling was lack luster. The Greek yogurt was thick with two Cs. The toppings were nice, but wish they put it in a real dish. The frappe was good, and I know they come with lots of foam, but I wish there was more liquid in there. Overall, the variety of options is fantastic, but wish the execution was a bit better. I just came back from a fruitless bi ped journey to my Starbucks on Varick in 30 degree weather and they're shut down. Great. Came back to 60 Soho and they told me about Pi right around the corner. Feeling dumb I went and expected the blue coffee cups and greasy souvlaki . Instead I found : Really great mochas, chocolate croissants, ham and cheese croissants. Very nice people too, greeting you as you enter, and looks to be an array of traditional Greek pastries and other Greek dishes showcased. Had a wonderful, casual sampling of food here on a Tuesday evening. We were meeting a friend and wanted a quaint place to sit and talk and of course eat. Immediately upon entering we were greeted by Rose. She has ou been working there for one week, but her enthusiasm, and assistance was the best I've experienced in a long time. There were so many choices it was hard to narrow down our selection, but she helped. We started with a trio of dips with pita chips. The hummus and eggplant dip was so good. It was fresh and tasty. They gave each of us our own pita chips wrapped in paper. They were homemade and light, crunchy and seasoned so well. We split an order of moussaka and a side of a grain salad. As Rose described as very similar to orzo. The portion was enough for 3 of us to have more than enough and have a bit left over. We ended with coffee and pastries. We had brownies, chocolate baklava and thumbprint cookies. They all were very good and homemade. We started sitting outside, and Rose helped me carry out the food and drinks, she certainly went above and beyond and was so hospitabl. It was getting a bit cold and a table opened up inside, so we quickly moved. Their hours posted are until 8, but we stayed almost to 9 and was not rushed out. From the moment I stepped up to the display cases to take a look, I felt it was a disorganized experience for the uninitiated customer such as myself, that I was rushed even though it wasn't that busy or at a peak serving hour. There was a distinct sense of chaos going on behind the counter that threw me. I ended up quickly ordering a zucchini egg and cheese pie as that was the first thing in the display. I didn't grasp how the sides worked when I ordered and realized too late what a picture of a more balance plate may look like at this establishment. (And it did look good, unlike mine. In retrospect.) It would have been helpful if the lady helping me had suggested or even inquired if I wanted some salad or fresh yogurt with my meal, especially since I asked how do people typically order here. Live and learn. We had been up and traveling since 4am so we also ordered cappuccinos. That was my least favorite thing. The cappuccino was watery with an unpleasant burned aftertaste. The zucchini pie itself was fresh, herbaceous, creamy, nicely eggy, with shredded zucchini. The zucchini was more than a touch undercooked yet the overall slice of pie was tasty. Although I've never been to Greece my friend who has been told me how identical the coffee tastes to that of what you'd get there. It was 22 a pound so came out to like 9. The items were pretty small so found to be pretty expensive too.
