OMG, that gnocchi, I can't say it's the best I ever had as I spent a couple weeks in Italy, but it was right up there. I gave it 5 stars as our server was a bit off the wall but enjoyable and had no problems tweaking my menu item, basically letting me create a combination of 3 plates into my meal. Don't waste your time or money at this restaurant. I've ordered Piatti's roasted salmon entree regularly and was served this nonexistent portion as a takeout. I honestly thought they gave me someone's leftovers. I called to discuss with "Manager" Mason but he had an attitude, was extremely rude and didn't want to hear of my disappointment. He didn't offer to make another order but did say he would "credit" my credit card for the entree and left me with no dinner. First words: repulsive and disgusting. I immediately threw up in the bathroom after eating. It took 30 minutes for for the bardenter to make 2 drinks. I ordered a cosmo but what I got was straight cheap vodka in a glass with a drop of red food coloring. It was so awful. My mom ordered an amaretto sour and it was sour lemon and some type of alcohol that wasn't amaretto. When we asked about the drinks the bartender said he had "too many things going on in head to serve us" meanwhile there were 4 other costumers in the entire restaurant. Our waiter was extremely slow (we are very patient people but his service was simply unprofessional. He even got in an argument with the bartender right in front of us. The manager was also there but did not pay attention to anything going on. Our food was sitting on the bar getting cold for about 15 minutes while the manager and waiter simply stared at it not knowing who it belonged to. The food was very mediocre, it tasted like it was microwaved and not properly heated. I threw up after eating either due to the un-drinkable "cosmo" or the lukewarm food. Hello, you never know what is going to be the service in a restaurant and this restaurant usually has excellent servers, but there was a recent experience that was mind-boggling. After sitting at our table booth for exactly 11 minutes without any service, I told my companion I'll be right back. I got out of my chair and looked for our server. I found him. In a kind, but direct way asked him if he planned on serving us tonight or not? He looked embarrassed and apologetically said he would be right over. I returned to the table and the waiter also known as a server, came over and brought us water. Provided us with a menu. Told us about the food etc. He couldn't have been more gracious. Sometimes in a restaurant that is busy things can occur that start a dining experience off very oddly. Let me just say that the service for the rest of the evening was impeccable. And the food was great as well as the wine. The first act was definitely weird the following two acts, including the dessert was sweet. I'd go back to Piatti only because it's one of the better southern Marin restaurants. Maybe not incredible cuisine but definitely far better than average. So, our dinner for two cost about $100 per person. $245 total. The server received a very handsome tip. Good to turn weirdness into wonderful in life! read more

Nice restaurant, nice people, great agrugala salad, but I found the mushroom capenelle a failed dish, both unappetizing in presentation and taste. Food was barely fine but the outdoor patio still makes it worth going sometime ....but not anytime soon. The service started quite well , the server was very engaging and cracking "jokes" with many tables left and right. Unfortunately as it turned out , he joked a lot but did not really take good notes of our food orders as it was not placed In correctly. We heard other tables near by also having similar issues with food orders not being done right or items not delivered but still on their check. I had to get up twice to get some condiments from the interior and ask for utensils as we had food delivered but no utensils. Once I went inside to ask for those items I saw that the interior was quite busy so maybe the server got busy all in a sudden and they were not ready for it? I am not sure. Management walked around a couple of time chit chatting and offering little to no help to the waiter. Maybe be those are union jobs and there limitation on what one person can do vs another. By end of the meal we got to chat and laugh about the experience with those other tables as we shared experiences and maybe next time we stick to have something to drink and enjoy the views instead of taking the chance on the "full experience ". read more

I can't say enough about this wonderful restaurant. On very short notice they accommodated our party of 16 for a celebratory dinner on their lovely patio overlooking the water. Being on vacation from the east coast none of us knew of Piatti and found it by happy chance. The service and food were fabulous! Our table had focaccia, Caesar salads, olives, pasta with shrimp & broccoli rabe, chicken puttanesca, short rib w/ polenta, squid ink pasta & ciopppino. Our server Sabrina, assistant manager Eduardo and manager Ernesto were all so welcoming and helpful. This is definitely a place we will go back to when visiting the Bay Area! read more

Went to Piatti's on Easter Sunday with my family. While the ambiance is nice, the food was severely lacking. The pizza is about half the size that it used to be, had barely any sauce on it, and was flavorless. The romain heart salad with Gorgonzola with salmon was super disappointing. The salmon was so tiny it was insulting. The Gorgonzola (if you call it that) was literally a blob that it made me gag I actually spit it out. I understand inflation, but the prices were outrageous, and the food was just not good for what you're getting. I would like to give it ZERO STARS. I used to like this place years ago. My dear uncle had recently passed away and my family wanted to honor his memory with a great Italian meal and celebrate his life. Piatti's was a great central location for our family members to gather and enjoy a rare evening together. The dinner service started with the bread with olive oil and vinegar, which was served upside down in a container before being removed and mixed. Next came the caesar salad and the bean soup. I thought the salad was a tad overdressed and the greens were too large, but the soup was very refreshing. Our first course were the pasta dishes, including the orecchiette with sausage in cream sauce and gnocchi with tomato sauce, mozzarella, and basil. I really enjoyed both dishes, especially the gnocchi, which was light and pillowy. The main course was a sea bass with white wine sauce and filet mignon with blue cheese, served with mashed potatoes and spinach. I quite liked the fish which was perfectly cooked and flaky, but I thought the filet was a little overcooked. However, it remained tender and I liked the blue cheese as well. The mashed potatoes were buttery and creamy but the spinach was under-seasoned. Overall I quite enjoyed the protein choices. The dessert course was my favorite and that included their novelty-sized tiramisu and vanilla bean, dark chocolate, and butterscotch ice creams. The tiramisu was yummy but my favorite was the dark chocolate ice cream followed by the vanilla bean. The butterscotch was a too sweet for me after such a heavy dinner, but it was definitely some quality stuff. Service was very friendly and Jared was a fantastic server. He made everybody very comfortable and made sure my nephew was very happy too. The location is beautiful and on a nice night you can see the sunset over the horizon from the back patio. We spent a lot of time at the old Piatti's through the years, even celebrating major family events in the fireplace room and the upstairs private room. I'm disappointed to hear there is no more private room as it turned into offices upstairs and the doors have been removed from the fireplace room. The remodel was not for any improvement and instead, lost the homestyle Italian vibes. The menu changed and food presentation is less than par. The chicken dish was a deep fried chicken cutlet and the short ribs were served in watery polenta. Every main dish food item on the menu does not come with any vegetable unless you order a side veggie or a salad. This is one of my long time favorite go to restaurants here in Marin. I just got home from having lunch with my girlfriend, this afternoon at "PIATTI," and as always, I am beyond satisfied. To start my lunch, I had a "Ceasar Salad." It is a very simple salad, but yet, it was refreshingly appetizing and delicious! Then after, I opted for a pasta dish. My choice of "Fettuccine with Shrimp and Capers" was on point! It was flavorful and cooked perfectly! I couldn't be happier! I do not normally have dessert after lunch, so I skipped that. Besides, I probably won't be able to make space for dessert since I was quite content already. Well, after the salad, the pasta, and a basket of warm bread with olive oil and balsamic dip, I was very full! In PIATTI, "Jose" and "Mario" are my favorite servers. They are impeccable! The lemon ravioli and pizzas were so delicious. The staff was super polite and warm. They were very quick to bring in the order and kept checking if everything was good. Also as a sweet gesture, the owner was prepared to have guests coming in from rain and cold weather. The decor was nice but missing some flair, it was a fresh look but very bland and in need of a pop of color or some art work and displays just something to focus the eyes. They expanded seating but lost the comfort homey feel it used to have. The menu was similar but lacked some of the better items from before. Portions were smaller and the dishes we had were not very flavorful. They need a waiting area at the front door as there was no place to sit while we waited for our table. Wow! this place is beautifully located! The inside was gorgeous with all the Christmas decorations. Service was great and polite. The dining experience starts with perfectly warmed bread and a olive oil/ basalmic mix that defies gravity. The food was tasty, however if you like to make changes to dishes, you can't do that here. We tried to make a dish vegetarian, and they politely declined. We had the butternut squash ravioli and the salmon. The ravioli was outstanding! Absolutely delicious (try it) We love the olives as a app, for our surprise they were served hot fyi. I was told the drinks were great (I'm preggo so I cannot drink :( ) But by the end of the dinner our party had tried almost all the cocktail drinks so I believe them. I have a feeling that Piatti is going to become our go-to spot for lots of happy family dinners! Tonight my 11-yo nephew and I had planned a dinner "date", which happened to coincide with my late dad's birthday. In trying to pick a spot to try, I was initially leaning toward Marin Joe's, but to be honest, the reviews of Joe's are all over the freaking place, with, really, endless one-star reviews and very negative comments regarding the staff. I still want to try Joe's but tonight didn't seem like the night for it. So I gave my nephew the option of Piatti (which I'd seen often bc my shrink is in the office next door!) or the Cheesecake Factory, and he said he now "hates" the Cheesecake Factory (seriously I have no clue how that is even possible but he's an 11-yo boy so we're not expecting actual LOGIC from him until, like, college) so Piatti it was. The Denver (Cherry Creek) Piatti was always on my list of spots to hit, but I never actually made it there, so I was enthusiastic to try the Mill Valley location. I have so many "raves" about this place, but I have to say that above all, Piatti is a prime example of SIMPLICITY giving birth to PERFECTION. The space itself is warm and casual yet still crisp and bright. The view of Shelter Bay adds a nice ambience, even on a slightly chilly and overcast evening. Our server was Jose and he (and frankly, the entire staff) were friendly, welcoming and attentive. Warm bread with Balsamic (or "Basalmic" as Guy Fieri calls it) vinegar and OO was lovely, and while the water glasses are short and stout, the bottle of water is left on the table, which is nice! (Yay end of Great Drought of 2016!) I ordered the linguine with clams ($23) and nephew ordered fettuccine with butter and parm ($15). The pasta was fabulous! Again - simplicity won this dish! For dessert, I had tiramisu and nephew had flourless chocolate cake. (We brought a candle for dad/grandpa's birthday). Jose was SO sweet when he brought the check he apologized for not knowing it was a birthday dinner so he comped a dessert. I was stunned. Again, I have NOT been to Marin Joe's, but based on the reviews and comments, it might do their staff well to take an afternoon jaunt a few miles south on 101 and have a couple of meals. I have lived in Piatti's neighborhood for 40+ years. After they opened, I went there regularly/monthly, mostly to sit in the bar area and usually to order food. The food has varied in quality over the years, but has always been OK - not great, but no major complaints. Recently the service has gotten bad; I would say offensive. Have you ever gone into a restaurant that was almost empty, yet they seat you at one of the worst tables? This has happened to me the last three visits, which will be my last. I strenuously complained on my second last vi#it, and they "found" a nice table in the main dining room. Tonight, with a reservation, and a half empty restaurant, we were seated at a terrible table. we passed on that and they refused to give us a table in the dining room, stating they had reservations. (?). So we sat outside, although we had no desire to do so. I complained to the waiter who has been there 20+ years yet couldn't explain their seating procedures. I sent a complaint to the manager, who showed up after our food arrived. We were told they "found" a table in the main dining room. Well, too late for me. That will likely be my last visit to this Piatti. read more

I never thought I'd be saying this, but Piatti's has gone downhill. Ambiance is still fine. Service is not a problem. It's the chef. The chef is a BIG problem. Piatti's, it's time to rethink what you are doing, or NOT doing with food. I got the spaghetti and meatballs which I was looking forward to. The spaghetti was thin and no where near al dente. It was tasteless, and the meatballs were too. The meal was more or less like eating cardboard. My girlfriend wanted something decently healthy and got the salmon with vegetables. The salmon itself was fine, but the potatoes and asparagus were served in a massive quantity of aioli, the vegetables were just sitting there stuck in the aioli which coated the bottom of the plate. Willis please. This is Marin, and this is fucking California. That plate went out in the 60's. Piattis owners, it's time for a new chef. Get one who has some innovation, the person who put both those plates together needs to be put out to pasture. read more

It didn't start so well: - Our reservation was made for 5 persons, but they brought us to a table for 4. - We were moved to a 4 person table in the back corner that would accommodate an additional chair, but then had to wait almost 10 minutes for the chair. - Then we had to wait another 10 minutes for water, bread, taking our drink order or any kind of attention - Our table was behind a pillar that was between our table and a large table of 8 and the waiter had to keep squeezing between the pillar and us to get to the other table - One member of our party was hit in the head by the busboy clearing the other table - twice. And she is the Mill Valley resident in our party that suggested we dine there. But after all that: - The drinks were well made a delivered promptly - The food was excellent - The service we eventually received was fantastic - The recommendations on the food and wine were all spot on - And the table in the back corner turned out to be a decent location - They comp'ed us the two deserts for the table for our troubles My only 2 complaints are: First of all they never acknowledged the reservation mistake. From the beginning to the end they acted as if we just had 1 more person show up. Even when the manager came over to our table at the end of the evening, he never apologized for the reservation error. He apologized for having to wait for a chair and for the table location, but basically politely blamed it on needing a table for 5 instead of 4. People make mistakes. So accept responsibility, apologize, and move on. I was sitting next to my wife when she called and made the reservation. I heard her say 5, and then repeated it. The second complaint is that the comp'ed deserts came only after I pulled the waiter aside and said something. What I asked for was something for the local member of our party - the one that was hit in the head and was embarrassed for the initial service at the place she recommended. I asked that they give her a gift certificate for a future visit - instead they comp'ed 2 deserts. That is ok, but not what I asked for, plus the fact that we actually had to ask. If they were smart they would have done what I requested, because then the next time we were in town she would have said "hey, I have this certificate from Piatti that I have been meaning to use ..." And Piatti would have sold another dinner for 4 or 5 at a later date. In the end, it was a rough night for them, but the food was great. So while it was a frustrating evening at various moments, we still had a lovely evening and would definitely return. read more
