Piatti -- without a doubt the best meal we had on our last visit up to the Bay. We showed up around 7:30 on a Friday night and we were seated immediately due to the thing all the people crowed around the door obviously haven't heard of -- a reservation. There was six of us and we were given a perfect corner table against the window overlooking the tiny Shelter Bay. Being that Piatti is an Italian restaurant, the menu is full of everyone's Italian favorites with a modern twist. For our appetizers we got the warm Castelvetrano olives (with toasted bread crumbs, parmesan, and grilled lemon), crispy brussels sprouts (with aged balsamic, hardboiled egg, and crumbled gorgonzola), garlic prawns (with lemon, capers, parsley, and toast), and flat bread (with goat cheese from the wood oven and four hour tomato). The olive were fantastic and the brussels sprouts were the best I've ever eaten. Most people don't get too excited when they see these underrated vegetable balls, but these were so delicious it almost hurt to eat them. I definitely recommend these little guys! The garlic prawns were delicious and the toast was soaked with the amazing sauce. The flatbread was perfectly crispy and the creamy goat cheese was so good I could have eaten it with a spoon! The appetizers were so unbelievably good we all couldn't wait for the main dishes. I ended up getting the spinach-ricotta ravioli (with lemon cream, citrus bread crumbs, and parmesan). The sauce was so creamy and amazing without the lemon being too overpowering and the toasted bread crumbs added nice dimension and consistency to every bite. As if all that wasn't enough, we still got dessert -- chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream and a huge scoop of seasonal sorbet on the side. In keeping with the rest of the meal, this dish was so tasty and rich it was easily big enough to split between all six of us! If you manage to show up before the sun goes down, the small bay just outside the windows is gorgeous and adds to the great ambiance of the dining area. Piatti is just a short drive up the freeway from the Golden Gate, and is worth every gallon of gas you'll spend while sitting in traffic! read more

Been coming here on/off for a few years and food and service have been consistently good. We were just there last Friday and everyone we encountered (hostess, bartender, waiter) were all so friendly and accommodating. I love that they also take reservations for the bar area (high-tops) b/c sometimes we just want to hang out at the bar for drinks and apps after work, and it's nice not to have to worry about getting there early enough to grab a stool :) This last time we were there, we left our credit card, and the hostess immediately called to let me know, and it was right before we got onto the freeway, so she saved us a trip (b/c my husband would likely not even notice until days later, LOL). Ambiance: Although we didn't have a reservation for lunch, we were seated along the window that overlooked the deck. The table was located next to the bar & along the corridor to the back room which would usually annoy me but we looked out the window enjoying the view & didn't notice. There were tables on the outdoor deck but it was a chilly, windy day so we passed on that option. Definitely request a table along the window to enjoy the view. Service: Excellent. They were friendly & attentive without being intrusive. Refilled the water carafe without being asked & promptly brought more bread when requested. Food: $27 Today's Fish Stew, Clams, Garlic Prawns, Tomato Broth & Roasted Garlic - was FANTASTIC!!! The best we've ever tasted & we've tasted many. The fish was salmon & everything was perfectly cooked. The clams were tender & sweet. The prawns were perfect. The salmon was moist & delicate. We adored the broth & sopped up every drop with bread. I hope it's that delicious every time because we'd love to taste it again. There was a special Braised Short Ribs with grilled asparagus & roasted potatoes (we substituted for the horseradish mashed potatoes) - it was hearty & filling. The short ribs were tender & fell apart with a fork. The asparagus portion was generous & still had a crunch. $7 Butterscotch Pot De Creme, w/Chocolate & Sea Salt - It was good & not too sweet. This is the first bad review I have ever posted. Food is tasty and location is very nice. My complaint - The burrata included crostini on the menu. The dish did not come with crostini or any other option to support the burrata. I asked for crostini. They did not have crostini, and could only offer the focaccia off the menu. We were charged $5 for the bread. While the $5 is nominal, it was in poor tasted to charge for what is a standard accompaniment to burrata, and advertising crostini was included when it was not. Server argued with me, and then manager argued with me. I hope the $5 and trying to educate me how burrata should be served is worth the poor review. Also, texted my BFF who has large influence in the Mill Valley community and SF restaurant scene. The customer may not always be right, but you should at least pretend to care...over $5! read more

This was an old standard go to for my husband and me Loved the food. Since the "remodel" we have gone a few times, each time hoping there were just some COVID issues, but just went again tonight and was totally disappointed. Waiter was indifferent, seemed tired and overworked. Ordered a glass of Nebbiolo and it was clearly "corked" horrible and undrinkable. Waiter told us it had "just been opened" so it was fine. ( surprise! That's how you discover a corked wine. Ordered a glass of Pinot noir and it was great. Shared a salad that was overdressed and oily ( we said nothing). Ordered our food and my husband requested no chili flakes in his pasta dish. Of course it came, overcooked and with chili flakes. We gave up and didn't say anything. I am a huge fan of Piatti's, since discovering this chain in Montecito. Each location has a slightly different menu with unique dishes. The Mill Valley location is especially impressive in their emphasis on serving locally grown, sustainable foods as much as possible. The Mister and I consider it a treat to come here, much better than anything we can find in San Jose (and definitely better than any place in Santana Row). And we usually order new items to try from each section of the menu, which is not something we usually do. Whenever we're at Piatti's, we splurge. The views of the inlet are beautiful. Try to get an outdoor patio table. During a summer visit, the manager brought me a blanket/shawl to wrap around, as he thought I was chilly. It was totally unexpected but much appreciated. It's part of the chain, but this location (aka Piatti Locali) is special in that the chef buys the majority of ingredients from organic farmers in Marin. Taking charge within a corporate machine is a great thing! Bustling, light and airy for lunch. Probably the best truffled mushroom pizza ever with TONS of mushies and delicious fontina? cheese. We had such bad service it was laughable. The waiter took our order but seemed annoyed. (When he walked away my husband said to me, sarcastically, "Love your job much, buddy?") We didn't see him again for almost an hour. Our food came pretty quickly, served by a busboy, but was disappointing. Husbands chicken was hot but greasy and the green beans were cold with no flavor. My pasta was OK, but came with a pile of spinach that had no flavor or seasoning. (Hubby felt ill the whole next day.) Busboy cleared our plates and then we waited... and waited. I started wondering how long we had to wait before we just got up and left. Someone other than our waiter came by and said something about getting us "taken care of" which seemed odd. Then our original waiter, whom we hadn't seen all night, came by and said in an apologetic tone, "We're going to get you taken care of right away. Im not sure what happened..." I told him we already got our food and were just waiting for the check. He was stunned and said, "You've already eaten?! Neither of us (his manager and himself,I guess) saw you eating..." Then rushed back to the kitchen, presumably to cancel the food he had reordered for us. We had been there about an hour by that time and he hadn't seen us get our food, eat, and get our table cleared because once he took our order we never saw him again until that point. Nice attention to detail! Almost $100 for one salad, two entrees, no drinks or dessert (and no bread either, by the way.) Won't be back... too many better places to eat in Mill Valley to waste our time and money here. read more

Food was great. Only one minor complaint: the sun shined through the windows right on my face, and the maître-d said they didn't have any shades - they were being fixed. So it was either a nice view with a brutal sun or no sun and a boring table. ... My sister had the gnudi and the Brussels sprouts, I had the soup and the chicken puttanesca. We both had tiramisu for dessert (excellent). We loved it all. I thought I didn't like Brussels sprouts, but the way they did it changed my mind. The wine was also good. Thumbs way up. read more

It was better than I remembered! ... and I remembered really good times looking out at the water view, being served by wonderful staff, and dining on tasty food. We arrived for a late brunch on Sunday afternoon and shared a couple of appetizers: the goat cheese with flatbread, tomato jam, and xvoo ($13 or so) and the baby greens salad with feta cheese, radish, and herb vinaigrette ($10 or so). These were surprisingly delicious. I said: what have I been eating lately that makes this taste so, so good in comparison. It just felt so fresh, so luxurious, and big portions, too! Then for entrees, he had the basic two eggs any style with potatoes and meat, and I had the lemon ricotta pancakes ($13 each or so). These were good, but not shockingly good like the appetizers were. Perhaps we're used to tasty breakfast food, perhaps we were not as hungry by then.. I don't want to give the wrong impression: they were good, too. The service was top notch. Currently my favorite place for brunch/lunch. This is mainly due to the location and setting. Had the pulled pork sandwich and my friend ordered the seafood linguine. I've been to a few Piatti locations and have concluded that the food is nothing great, just OK. I've never left a Piatti restaurant thinking, ''that was really good. Can't wait to eat here again!'' Which is why I didn't expect much food-wise. I did hear that this was a nice location that overlooked the water, so a friend and I decided to check it out. The pulled pork sandwich was huge but was mainly bread. The sandwich looked like it had been flattened so the pork inside had been smushed into a patty. There were literally a few soggy leaves of greens under? the pork that had soaked up the (tasty) juices from the meat. Luckily, I had a fresh salad on the side so I wasn't disappointed. Although it seemed to have just kind of been thrown together, the sandwich tasted fine. The sweet/peppery dressing that came out with the salad was very good. The local is a very nice setting overlooking the mountains, a handsome community of condos and peaceful waters. There's a trail that goes around this large pond(?) and the folks that walk it love to look your way and give you a kind smile. They're happy, people eating on the deck are happy-- everyone's happy. If whether permits and you can sit out on the deck please do so. It is incredibly relaxing (given that's it's not too busy). My friend and I felt like we were at the spa just relaxing and sipping our memosas. I found this setting to be more cozy than if you were to eat overlooking the bay or ocean. It's more of a quiet, homey, backyard feel, like you're out on the deck of your own place. The location makes up for the so-so food. 4 stars for what would be a 2.5 or 3 based on food alone. Oh, and don't want to forget to mention our server, Helen, who made our visit here that much more enjoyable. Will be back for more relaxing weekend afternoons! My only small request would be not to play electronic music during Sunday brunch, no matter how softly it's playing in the background, kinda distracting. read more

Piatti is a lovely place, has delicious food and attentive service. Our server Tino was professional and very helpful for our drink selection as well as our meals. Tino informed us that they always have fresh seasonal ingredients for the drinks, so the libation menu will change. We dined in September and I can highly recommend the Brown Derby (4 Roses bourbon, fresh grapefruit, honey syrup), the Cucumber Fizz (Absolute Pear vodka, cucumber, lemon juice, elder flower liqueur and soda water), and the Watermelon basil margarita (tequila blanco, fresh lime, fresh watermelon juice and basil syrup). All 3 drinks were freshly made for $12.00 each and were refreshing and very pleasant. Our meals were satisfying and wonderfully prepared. Five of us ordered pasta dishes that night and one ordered the fish of the day. Prices ranged from $21.00-$25.00 and market price for the fish. I would recommend the Spinach-ricotta ravioli made with the lemon cream and gremolata (lemon zest, garlic and parsley) for a delightfully filling pasta dish. Two friends ordered the Pappardelle pasta made with Parmesan, olive oil in a classic Bolognese sauce, which they both agreed, was rich, meaty and creamy. My husband enjoyed the Linguini with manila clams and calabrian chili. This savory dish was flavorful and a perfect blend with the sweetness of the manila clams. The restaurant sits on the Pickleweed inlet, just north of the Golden Gate Bridge. You can get a window seat to enjoy a beautiful sunset. read more

I'm so glad I discovered this place. Have been driving by for years, and was recently taken there for a birthday lunch. The food was super yummy, we ordered a bunch of stuff including the eggplant appetizer, chop salad, pasta dish, and a pizza. All delicious. Recently went back with my husband for a weekend dinner, made a last-minute reservation and arrived, very busy but they seated us right away. We ordered a bunch of stuff this time as well, chop salad again, a pasta dish, a really yummy chicken dish, the brussels sprouts and tiramisu. Everything was fresh, hot and delicious. The only thing I will say is that our waiter, although lovely, wasn't as attentive as I would have liked, but I think he was spread thin and very busy so I will give him the benefit of the doubt. Definitely going to go again, maybe even bring the kids because it's definitely a kid friendly place, Albet expensive. Excited to see what new items will be on the menu soon read more

This restaurant was mediocre before their "remodel," and now it's even worse. The day of our reservation, the restaurant called several times asking me to call back and confirm, which I did. I had already confirmed through Open Table where I made the reservation. On our way over there, they called once again to ask if we were coming. So strange and extremely annoying. The only ok part of the experience was that the waiter was very nice. We all had the salmon dinner, which was a ridiculously small piece of fish on top of artichokes and swimming in a broth. The fish was overcooked. I requested some bread with the meal and was told that they do not have complimentary bread but that we could buy some focaccia. We declined. It is annoying and cheap for a restaurant not to provide bread with dinner. The music was absolutely irritating with a thumping bass droning on and on loudly. We couldn't have a conversation. I asked the waiter if it could be turned down, and he came back to the table to say that the manager said it couldn't be. When I made our reservation, I said that it was a birthday celebration. The restaurant did nothing to honor the birthday. When I got home, the icing on the cake of this bad experience was the email I received from Open Table saying that the restaurant had informed them that we hadn't shown up for our reservation. To there credit, they noticed the problem and that we were pretty upset, a manager came over, apologized, got the dish made and served quickly and said it would be taken off the bill, which it was. They also gave us a free desert. Agreement with other reviewers that this Corporate chain restaurant lacks any real dining merit. I booked 2 Xmas parties for the company here. They fed 55 of us competently, but the food is not stellar. Suggested alternates are: IL Fornaio in Corte Madera - the original restaurant still Owned by the founding family. The only IL fornaio location that does NOT suck. Fabrizio's in downtown Larkspur. Fabulous authentic Italian cuisine in a nice room with the most confused and hapless wait staff. Almost legendary how disparate the high food quality is challenged by the dumbest waiters in Nor Cal. And some of them are still on the job after 10 years! read more

I always suggest you try their specials (especially if it is fish). Unfor, I had high hopes for the bolognese sauce and egg pasta, but it didn't rank up to my fav. place in berkeley (corsica). At least, the pasta was made al dente! The dessert (bitter sweet chocolate cake was dry) also tasted like a 2nd class citizen from pasta pomodora, but it was a great experience and good night. I was there for a private event, so can't say much by way of the regular lunch/dinner menu, but I was blown away by the outdoor patio with a view of the water, that alone made me ready to come back. The food was delicious, and it seemed to have a pretty good amount of space. The staff was very friendly and seemed to be having fun, and I felt very comfortable there. Finally when I got up to get a waiter they came, never brought water or extra plate (asked for it) or took menus after ordering. They asked if we wanted bread which was added to check (never said anything). Cesar salad dressing was watery and had no taste. Wine wasn't good but made no amends. Only one chardonnay by glass $19. Ravioli with lemon used to be delicious in light cream sauce, instead saturated in butter. So if you want bad food bad host service but a great waiter and you just want to have below average food and atmosphere at least make sure you ask for Tino. The staff was friendly and helpful. The food was very good. But it makes sense that any business located next to a Ferrari dealership is going to be very expensive, and Piatti delivers on that front. This was my first time at Piatti, and the server was very helpful at explaining the menu, and he made great recommendations. He was also very good at refilling our glasses and making sure we had everything that we needed. The Pappardelle was delicious because the bolognese was so flavorful, and the 3 meats were moist. The lemon semifreddo was amazing. The frozen mousse with bits of lemon peel was refreshing, and the berries on top were just ripe without being too hard, or too mushy. Oh, and another good point? They gave my daughter some crayons, and they were brand name Crayola! Not that I have anything against generic crayons, but I don't even buy her Crayola! Fancy! We have been going to Piatti's for years and have always enjoyed the food service and atmosphere, until yesterday. We went to lunch and sat at the bar as usual. The manager was on other side and was so damn rude and disrespectful to his employees both my husband and I were shocked at the treatment...especially in front of customers. Bartender was great as always! We got a pizza which was fine and a salad that sadly had way too much vinegar on it. Throughout our visit the manager continued his awful treatment. He was down right mean. I felt so bad for the employees as they were all working hard (they were not that busy). It took everything in me not to approach the manager and tell him off. I ordered what I usually never do, but I found their house specialty was a lobster risotto! OMG! So good! My husband was so excited to take me and our two teenage sons to have an early dinner. He had been there some years ago with his work colleagues and was eager to have us try it. I felt so bad for him because it was definitely a let down and was disappointed having come from the East Bay. There was no reason that the service was so slow and quite frankly unapologetic and unwelcoming. We got there at 4 pm and were nicely greeted and soon after things went downhill. Just to sum it up. Bread (that you pay for) and water took so long for no reason, it was not busy. It was odd too, watching so many employees, servers and managers stand around and talk. Something felt very strained amongst them. Our server never asked how our food was, come back to check on us for the exception of flagging him down to get the water we requested that tasted like lukewarm tap water. We didn't order dessert because he took so long to come back that we just asked for the check. Food was really subpar and portions small. The best thing we all liked was the focaccia bread. Such a shame for such a beautiful location, great decor and lighting. Would of really wanted to give it 2 - 1.2 stars. read more
