I had a a very bad experience at the store this week. The woman displayed a very poor welcome. She refused to let me taste a flavor - my first pick. And when I chose another flavor - hazelnut, my 2nd pick - she asked me why. I said that I would not choose a flavor without testing it. She then responded that "you do not make any sense, you have to go for it". She was dry, at the limit of arrogant. Low skills on how to treat a customer. I love all of the flavors and crepes that they offer. Weekly they change the flavors and they also say what is gluten free and what is not. I absolutely love the owners, so so nice and they have remembered me since day 1. Now that they are on magazine street I have still remained faithful. Even my 3 year old is obsessed! The old is new again at Piccola; they packed up and moved their space-age-looking gelato equipment to a new shop. The quality hasn't diminished, which is to say it's sky-high. Their gelato flavors rotate, and on this visit I got a crepe topped with saffron white chocolate gelato, which was utterly mesmerizing. But I've tried most of the other regular ones, and you can't go wrong. The smooth, pure flavor stands above most other gelato I've had. The crepes are quite splendid as well, dusted with sugar and delicate and crisp. Sadly, the magnificent and ludicrously indulgent gelato po-boys I've photographed are no longer on the menu. I was in the area picking up some pies when I decided I might as well stop in. They had been on my list, so why not? Well, I wish I had gone at a time when I didn't already have dinner planned because they also have coffee, crepes, flatbreads, and croissants. Next time. I did get some gelato though. I picked what seemed like the two most unusual flavors: banana salted caramel and carmelized fig. The flavors were legit - strong banana and fig presence - and the fig gelato even had bits of skin, a testament to its craft nature. Of the two, the banana was my favorite, and it wade me wonder why banana gelato/ice cream isn't more common. My two scoops were $6 though, so even if I lived closer it's probably not something I'd get regularly. There were a couple of skinny 4-seater tables and two 2-seater tables outside.
