I would give this place 17 stars if I could. It's some of the best ice cream/gelato I've ever eaten. The last time I went I had apricot sorbetto and it was so luscious and juicy I felt like I'd bitten into a piece of fruit fresh from a tree. I had a a very bad experience at the store this week. The woman displayed a very poor welcome. She refused to let me taste a flavor - my first pick. And when I chose another flavor - hazelnut, my 2nd pick - she asked me why. I said that I would not choose a flavor without testing it. She then responded that "you do not make any sense, you have to go for it". She was dry, at the limit of arrogant. Low skills on how to treat a customer. At the price they sell an ice cream ($8 for a medium cup, $14 for a XLarge) one could expect a better treatment. A store to avoid. read more

The old is new again at Piccola; they packed up and moved their space-age-looking gelato equipment to a new shop. The quality hasn't diminished, which is to say it's sky-high. Their gelato flavors rotate, and on this visit I got a crepe topped with saffron white chocolate gelato, which was utterly mesmerizing. But I've tried most of the other regular ones, and you can't go wrong. The smooth, pure flavor stands above most other gelato I've had. The crepes are quite splendid as well, dusted with sugar and delicate and crisp. Sadly, the magnificent and ludicrously indulgent gelato po-boys I've photographed are no longer on the menu. To make a long story short, I confirmed when we ordered that they do not offer samples for tasting, which is fine. When the proprietor was getting our order and asked me a question about a flavor, I didn't really hear or understand what she was talking about because she literally just told me 30 seconds ago a hard no to samples. I think I said that the flavor wasn't my first choice (but really with gelato no flavor can be bad, especially from here, everything was outstanding). The flavors were legit - strong banana and fig presence - and the fig gelato even had bits of skin, a testament to its craft nature. Of the two, the banana was my favorite, and it wade me wonder why banana gelato/ice cream isn't more common. My two scoops were $6 though, so even if I lived closer it's probably not something I'd get regularly. There were a couple of skinny 4-seater tables and two 2-seater tables outside. I've had Piccola on my short list for awhile. Friends in town and a planned long walk down Magazine from Audubon Park to the Garden District, provided the perfect opportunity. Best gelato in town, served by the friendliest shopkeepers. Ria knows her gelato and is happy to share. I leaned a few things about how to identify "real" gelato from the fake stuff many shops pass off as gelato. (Authentic gelato is made with milk, not cream and is stored 5-10 degrees warmer than ice cream). It took me a minute to find the entry, as it's not not on Magazine, as the address would indicate, but around the corner on Jena Street. We entered the spotlessly clean shop and were immediately greeted by Ria. She introduced us to the bears (see pic), explained the large variety of flavors, and even offered a sample of a couple, while explaining that this wouldn't be possible if they were busy. I opted for the Thai tea, which tasted exactly like the Thai iced tea at my favorite Thai restaurant. Makes sense after I learned that Piccola provided gelato to Banana Blossom as well as several other top restaurants in town.
