Yesterday was one of those days where I just needed a pastrami sandwich. It's a craving that rarely…read morecomes, but when it does, it arrives with a burning desire. I hopped in my 2017 Rav4, threw on Daft Punk, rolled the windows down, and had a spiritual drive to Langer's in downtown LA. I arrived and circled the block a few times, as I was back in a fight for my life to find parking. A uniquely Angelino experience. Frustration percolated. Breath Johnny, Breath. I finally found a spot a half mile walk away. I stepped out, paid for parking, and set off on the journey to Langer's. What a journey it was. It is rough down here. Living in New York for 4 years made me forget. It felt like skid row. The city just must not care. Junkies slumped, needles on the ground, and a mix of unidentified smells that amalgamated to form one of the most unpleasant odors to ever hit my nostrils. I waged through the unwelcomed scents, making sure to not look anyone in the eye, and finally made it to Langer's. I opened the door to a safe house amidst the downtown LA streets. The horrifying odor became a distant memory, with the smell of fresh, savory pastrami stepping in. I put in an order for takeout, and pulled out a book while I waited. I'm doing this thing where I keep a book on me at all times, so that everytime I pull out my phone to scroll, I read instead. Why? Because I'm better than you. As I was deeply enthralled with my novel, a man in a suit came up and asked if I was all set or needed anything else. What a touch. White glove service is a dying breed, and him just caring about the customer gave me little butterflies. I got my hot pastrami on rye ($24), and set off to MaCarthur park right across the street for a place to grub. I should have known that the park would be the exact same as the streets surrounding it, but the hopeless optimist in me was doing his thing. I took a lap around the park and quickly realized it was about the last place I would ever want to sit and enjoy a meal. I made the journey back to the Rav4, and took it to a park 20 minutes away that I knew was optimal. This sandwich was incredible. The rye bread was hearty with a crunchy crust, and the pastrami was so tender it truly melted in your mouth. It was a nice moment. Sitting in the park with this pastrami sandwich, just because I wanted to. When was the last time you really did something for yourself, and only because you wanted to do it? Sometimes, being selfish is the answer. Take care of yourself. Spend time with yourself. You're all you have at the end of the day. Langer's was the 2nd best pastrami sandwich I've had behind Katz's. We went around 11am and there wasn't a line yet, but by 11:30am it started to get busier and there was a small line. The staffing, service and efficiency were on point. Our server, Kevin, was nice and took good care of us. I ordered the lox, egg & onion scramble with a side of potatoes. It seems like most people come here for lunch and, obviously, for the meat. My meal was fairly bland. I did get a side of the house green salsa and that helped. It was definitely not up to the same level as the pastrami though. I personally wouldn't come back myself, but I would go if someone I was with really wanted to come. Overall, this seems like a great place. They have their own parking lot across the street, they have their operation down to a T, and they really nail the things people come there for. I appreciate that they have alternative options, but I would try something different next time. Maybe their other scrambles or their French toast would be better.

I was planning to stick with my usual sandwiches, but the delicious aroma of freshly baking pizza totally pulled me in. While waiting, we browsed the impressive selection of beers in their fridges; everything is neatly labeled with a wide range of craft, limited edition, sours, ales, hefs, and IPAs. We couldn't resist creating a 4-pack to take home. Love the cool wine cellar vibes The Heights has but for beer and yummy grub. For dinner, we ordered a pepperoni and mushroom pizza (cooked well done, my go to). Waiting for our order, I was this close to putting together another beer 4-pack, but I managed to resist! Our food came out quick, and we headed home (as fast as legally allowed ). The pizza was huge, flavorful, and super satisfying--even if it could've used a tiny bit more time in the oven for that extra "well-done" crisp. Regardless, we left stuffed and happy. Service was great, and I got a kick out of the restroom key attached to a small frying pan--no way anyone's losing that! I usually get lucky with street parking right out front. Make sure to heck the street signs and meters. Always a fun and tasty experience. The Heights Deli is a must before or after the game, or anytime you're in the area!

Brent's Deli is an institution in the San Fernando Valley, and it may just be its best. One thing…read morefor sure, the portions are generally humongous so you will never leave hungry. Nothing succeeds like excess. In fact, most people will need a take out box for one less meal to cook. Delicatessen means delicate eating in German, but at a Jewish American Delicatessen, the emphasis is on the Eating, which I am not complaining. 1) I requested an off menu item of having a Reuben sandwich where half is Corned Beef and the other Pastrami. Brent's Reuben has warm Sauerkraut, grilled Rye bread, melted Swiss Cheese, 1,000 Island dressing. Thinly sliced, multi-layered Mound of Pastrami is a bit on the dry side. Curing doesn't create a deep meaty Umami and spicing is present but attenuated. The Corned Beef is moister with bit more Umami & plush, thin multi-layered red colored meat. I have to say the Pastrami at Langer's is cured more intensely to bring out a deep Umami as well as more complex and complementary spicing of especially warm spiced cloves that adds aromatic richness. Brent's Pastrami doesn't seem to reach that kind of apotheosis. 1b) I asked for the steak fries to be fried two minutes longer for a crisper finish which was honored. Not much in way of that distinctive potato earthiness, but acceptable. 1c) Coleslaw is mayonnaise based, watery, bland, but a good cruciferous, fibrous veggie to add more fibre, healthful phytochemicals to counter the meat overload even though it isn't flavourful 2) Carrot Cake is closer to a delicate, dense, moist spice cake. A slice is enormous since it is cut from an extra tall cake studded with crushed walnuts and a cream cheese like not too sweet frosting. At $14 it could feed 4 people. Service is fine. They take your order and run with it. Bit of tunnel vision where it may be a bit hard to flag them down. But the job does get done. Overall 3+ stars
