Did a repeat visit, this time wisely going on a Friday at around 10:45 AM! This is the time to go! Our party of four were seated right away. Plenty of empty tables, in fact, it didn't seem filled until around 11:30. But - enough of that. The food. Does better tasting pastrami exist? I haven't been to the famous Katz in NYC but I can't imagine any place better in LA than Langer's. The #19 is their most famous, but one of my party turned me on to the #44 - essentially a grilled version of the 19 - and, IMHO, BETTER! I cannot wait to come back. The only downside is the location, which can feel a little uncomfortable with quite a few homeless people around. That said, there are times when it's much quieter, so I guess it's a matter of luck. I've been meaning to try Langer's for a while to compare it to their NY competitor, Katz deli. I'm glad I gave it a try. First of all, I wanted to comment on the parking. There is a Langers parking lot that's not too far away diagonal from the restaurant. It is a 1.5 hour parking with validation. We went on a weekdays so the lines weren't that long. I can't say the same for weekends and paying some money to park may be inevitable. Now the food. I was able to try the famous hot corned beef sandwich and I was able to snag some hot pastrami sandwich from my sister. They both had a looot of sauerkraut on the sandwich which gave it a nice acidity and freshness to the dish, but I wish the ratio was a little better with veggies to meat. I was expecting more meat in the sandwich. The meat was delicious though. Super tender, flavorful, and smoky. The sauce on the side was a nice touch. Also got the chili cheese fries and those are always good. Overall, I don't know if I will drive all the way to LA just for this. I am glad I did get to try this place out. To start, they have a parking lot a short walk away, validate for 90 minutes, plenty of time to eat. There can be lines, but I try to time it on a weekday before the lunch crowd hits! The staff is very friendly from the host station to the servers to the cashier. Many have probably worked there for years! They all seem very happy along with the customers chowing down their pastrami! Once inside there is seating at the counter or cozy booths. The menu can be a bit overwhelming, but trust that any way you want your pastrami sandwich, you can have it! I went with a friend, who at the moment is on a pastrami only diet. He was just in NYC, eating at several well known places for pastrami, yet still craving more when he returned! We split a sandwich, with coleslaw on the side so he could build his sandwich his way. Yesterday was one of those days where I just needed a pastrami sandwich. It's a craving that rarely comes, but when it does, it arrives with a burning desire. I hopped in my 2017 Rav4, threw on Daft Punk, rolled the windows down, and had a spiritual drive to Langer's in downtown LA. I arrived and circled the block a few times, as I was back in a fight for my life to find parking. A uniquely Angelino experience. Frustration percolated. Breath Johnny, Breath. I finally found a spot a half mile walk away. I stepped out, paid for parking, and set off on the journey to Langer's. What a journey it was. It is rough down here. Living in New York for 4 years made me forget. It felt like skid row. The city just must not care. Junkies slumped, needles on the ground, and a mix of unidentified smells that amalgamated to form one of the most unpleasant odors to ever hit my nostrils. I waged through the unwelcomed scents, making sure to not look anyone in the eye, and finally made it to Langer's. I opened the door to a safe house amidst the downtown LA streets. The horrifying odor became a distant memory, with the smell of fresh, savory pastrami stepping in. I put in an order for takeout, and pulled out a book while I waited. I'm doing this thing where I keep a book on me at all times, so that everytime I pull out my phone to scroll, I read instead. Why? Because I'm better than you. As I was deeply enthralled with my novel, a man in a suit came up and asked if I was all set or needed anything else. What a touch. White glove service is a dying breed, and him just caring about the customer gave me little butterflies. I got my hot pastrami on rye ($24), and set off to MaCarthur park right across the street for a place to grub. I should have known that the park would be the exact same as the streets surrounding it, but the hopeless optimist in me was doing his thing. I took a lap around the park and quickly realized it was about the last place I would ever want to sit and enjoy a meal. I made the journey back to the Rav4, and took it to a park 20 minutes away that I knew was optimal. This sandwich was incredible. The rye bread was hearty with a crunchy crust, and the pastrami was so tender it truly melted in your mouth. It was a nice moment. Sitting in the park with this pastrami sandwich, just because I wanted to. When was the last time you really did something for yourself, and only because you wanted to do it? After so many years of hearing about Langer's finally stopped by today since I was near DTLA. As mentioned in other reviews parking sucks but I was able to snag a meter spot just outside of the restaurant. The location is definitely not in a nice neighborhood but people seemed to be going about their own business. Upon walking in friendly faces greeted me and directed me to the counter seating area. Waitress was pretty attentive and took my order quickly. Food: Honestly I had high expectations since I've had many delis in NY that serves similar types of menu items. I do believe the bread and dressing at Langers is top notch. However everything else just lacks in many ways. Meat was thinly sliced and kept falling out of the sandwich, also the portion size is half of what is on the picture inside the restaurant which is incredibly misleading. Coleslaw was decent, on the tart side. Potato salad was pretty bland and nothing special. There were four of us dining, and the group was split right down the middle--two preferred the #19, while my friend and I thought the #44 was the winner. Either way, it's safe to say the sandwiches are excellent and there's likely an option that will appeal to everyone. The prices were also more reasonable than I expected. The pastrami was perfectly seasoned, cooked just right, and sliced generously. Every bite lived up to the reputation. I've always questioned "nippy cheese". What is it? What makes it "nippy"? Langer's is known for their best-in-the-west sublime-tasting pastrami, but on a whim we got their grilled Nippy cheese. We got the grilled nippy cheese on sourdough -- the bread is our only deviation from what a standard grill cheese sandwich is supposed to be: kraft singles on white-as-hayull bread, grilled to a golden brown, in butter, on a scorching-hot, flat cooking surface. The grilled nippy cheese here is the platonic ideal of what a grilled cheese sandwich should be. 1) The sandwich had the perfect golden-hued grilled color. 2) The cheese inside was the perfect ooey-gooey consistency. 3) The ration of bread to cheese was perfect. What was most surprising was the fact that this "nippy cheese" is from Kraft. Apparently, Nippy Cheese is what American cheese was called in the 1900s. This sandwich was so good I had to ask about the cheese. I expected the cheese to be some special-ass processed cheese-food from some specialty niche vintage supplier in Wisconsin. Nope! When a cashier asked, the cook said it was Kraft (Kraft singles is the only cheese appropriate for a standard grilled cheese sandwich, FYI) What this means is this sandwich was prepared perfectly. The location across from MacArthur Park is rough. You'll see drug addicts in zombie-like states right outside the windows and open drug deals happening on the street. It's a very sad scene and a stark reminder of how much Los Angeles has declined. I really wish city leaders cared more about cleaning it up. Comes with a lot of noodles that are delicious similar to the Lipton soup noodles. The matzo ball itself is pure perfection. I had no idea if LANGER'S was as good as I had heard others rave. Today, being in the area on business over to HACLA, I decided to drive a 1/2 mile (approx) east on Wilshire (at Rampart), to the southeast corner of Alvarado & 8th Street. Circled LANGER'S block once, as parking is not too easy to come by, but I found one metered space across the west side of Alvarado right across from LANGER'S. I parked and crossed the street. Once inside, a very courteous female voice greeted: "WELCOME". Turns out it was the voice of SHAE, one of the Hostesses. I immediately held her at attention as I proceeded to tell Shae, the story you just read of how long I've know of LANGER'S but never stopped in. I also suggested to Shae, to go to YOUTUBE and search for one of HUEL HOUSER'S "VISITING" segments. HUEL featured LANGER'S on the segment entitled, "COW TONGUE / VISITING WITH HUELL HOUSER!" Shae promised she'd look it up. Well, for now, let's just tell you: LANGER'S had been slated (last year) to close its doors forever. And I was appalled (at the thought) I'd NEVER enjoyed a PASTRAMI or COW TONGUE sandwich. I had known about this famous deli for years, but somehow never had the chance to visit until now. We went around lunchtime on a Saturday, and there were only about three people ahead of us in line. They had an air-conditioning unit set up outside and even handed out cold water to people waiting in line. It was such a thoughtful touch and a great example of their customer service. We had a potato knish, matzo ball soup, and a pastrami sandwich combo. Everything was delicious. After trying the pastrami sandwich, I completely understand why it is so famous. The quality and balance of the rye bread, pastrami, coleslaw, and Russian dressing were just perfect. The service was also quick, efficient, and professional. The #19. Recommended all over the place. Langer's claiming to be as good as Kats or Carnegie both of whom I've been too. Unfortunately since I didn't see what the #19 looked like before I ordered; I believe it definitely jaded me. First off, the location is terrible. Look it's probably me, but it felt dangerous. I guess I am not used to places like that. Just everything made me feel uneasy while walking to Langer's. I read that the owner is talking to the mayor to address things.... In any case, I got in, got out and took my #19 to another location. I opened it up and it didn't look like any NYC pastrami sandwich I have ever seen. I guess this is the way it used to be before the NYC sandwiches started getting ridiculously huge? I took a bite and I did like the crusty rye bread. Unlike a lot of NYC places where the bread is just to hold the meat, this one was toasty and tasty. However when I ate this sandwich, the coleslaw and Russian dressing dominated the taste. Was it good? Yes. Was it the "one" sandwich to eat if you are in Los Angeles? I don't think so. I guess we are so jaded with huge pastrami or fancy new sandwiches that this just seems so underwhelming. Add to the hyperbole about it being THE ONE to get and it just falls flat in the comparison. Aside than the unfortunate area this place is in, great place!! Great atmosphere, nice service, & good food! First time coming and there was a 20 minute or so wait, luckily they offered water and some A/C while we waited outside. Inside is quite nicely maintained, and they have a huge variety. I recommend #6 chopped liver & pastrami.. never knew the two went good together! I was pretty stuffed afterwards, but we ordered a side of fries on the side. I definitely wanna come again, but it's prob best to Waymo but I believe they have their own parking as well. We did street parking, which I don't recommend as the area is not 'the best'. read more

Drove to this place 300+ miles don't get me wrong. The food was good but 20 something dollars and this is how much meat they gave you. They're supposed to be pastrami chili cheese fries not chili cheese fries with a side of pastrami. If I could give 10 stars, I would. People weren't joking when they said their only regret was not trying this place sooner. It was an incredibly remarkable experience. The meat melts in your mouth and has remarkable flavor. It's not too salty, it's perfect. I tried the 44 and the 19 and the 19 was the best. The harmony of the ingredients in 19 was absolutely spectacular. The service was wonderful. I also really loved the old fashioned interior. read more

One of the jewels of old Los Angeles. Langers is an essential part of the history of this area. It's a real east coast style delicatessen. There are only a handful of these left, and this is probably the best. I've been coming here a couple times a year since the 90's and still love it. They have a big menu with a lot of good stuff but they are most famous for the pastrami. It's incredible. A couple of us have been on a pastrami quest the last year or two hitting all the top spots in LA and NYC and this might be the best out of the 20 or so places we compared. Langers is a time capsule - it's unchanged mid century vibe is perfect. They are very fast with the orders, servers are so on top of refills and pickles. This place is a well oiled machine. Tons of people come but they move them in and out quickly. I've been here when there was a line down the street, but they keep it turning over. I've also walked in and sat right away, it's lucky of the draw. The have a counter or small booths and tables. They have all the items you'd expect on the menu, mastoball, knish, pastrami, corned beef, breakfast all day and really, really good pies for dessert. read more
