We ordered the famous #19 Pastrami sandwich, and it was so good!! The combination of tender, flavorful pastrami, creamy Swiss cheese, crunchy coleslaw, Russian dressing, and fresh rye bread was the perfect combination. I ordered the half sandwich with a side of potato salad, which was the perfect portion for me. The rest of the family ordered the full sandwich with a side of fries, and everyone enjoyed their meal. One of the jewels of old Los Angeles. Langers is an essential part of the history of this area. It's a real east coast style delicatessen. There are only a handful of these left, and this is probably the best. I've been coming here a couple times a year since the 90's and still love it. They have a big menu with a lot of good stuff but they are most famous for the pastrami. It's incredible. A couple of us have been on a pastrami quest the last year or two hitting all the top spots in LA and NYC and this might be the best out of the 20 or so places we compared. Langers is a time capsule - it's unchanged mid century vibe is perfect. They are very fast with the orders, servers are so on top of refills and pickles. This place is a well oiled machine. Tons of people come but they move them in and out quickly. I've been here when there was a line down the street, but they keep it turning over. I've also walked in and sat right away, it's lucky of the draw. The have a counter or small booths and tables. Yesterday was one of those days where I just needed a pastrami sandwich. It's a craving that rarely comes, but when it does, it arrives with a burning desire. I hopped in my 2017 Rav4, threw on Daft Punk, rolled the windows down, and had a spiritual drive to Langer's in downtown LA. I arrived and circled the block a few times, as I was back in a fight for my life to find parking. A uniquely Angelino experience. Frustration percolated. Breath Johnny, Breath. I finally found a spot a half mile walk away. I stepped out, paid for parking, and set off on the journey to Langer's. What a journey it was. It is rough down here. Living in New York for 4 years made me forget. It felt like skid row. The city just must not care. Junkies slumped, needles on the ground, and a mix of unidentified smells that amalgamated to form one of the most unpleasant odors to ever hit my nostrils. I waged through the unwelcomed scents, making sure to not look anyone in the eye, and finally made it to Langer's. I opened the door to a safe house amidst the downtown LA streets. The horrifying odor became a distant memory, with the smell of fresh, savory pastrami stepping in. I put in an order for takeout, and pulled out a book while I waited. I'm doing this thing where I keep a book on me at all times, so that everytime I pull out my phone to scroll, I read instead. Why? Because I'm better than you. As I was deeply enthralled with my novel, a man in a suit came up and asked if I was all set or needed anything else. What a touch. White glove service is a dying breed, and him just caring about the customer gave me little butterflies. I got my hot pastrami on rye ($24), and set off to MaCarthur park right across the street for a place to grub. I should have known that the park would be the exact same as the streets surrounding it, but the hopeless optimist in me was doing his thing. I took a lap around the park and quickly realized it was about the last place I would ever want to sit and enjoy a meal. I made the journey back to the Rav4, and took it to a park 20 minutes away that I knew was optimal. This sandwich was incredible. The rye bread was hearty with a crunchy crust, and the pastrami was so tender it truly melted in your mouth. It was a nice moment. Sitting in the park with this pastrami sandwich, just because I wanted to. When was the last time you really did something for yourself, and only because you wanted to do it? Langer's came highly recommended by just about every food influencer on Instagram. Since I don't always trust the hype, I figured I'd check it out for myself. The first thing that stood out was the location. It's definitely not the polished, picture-perfect side of LA that many visitors expect. Walking from the parking lot, you're met with a mix of body odor, urine, and sewer smells. If you can get past that short walk, you're in for a much better experience once you step inside. We were told to expect a long wait, but fortunately there was no line when we arrived and we were seated right away. The restaurant itself has a classic, vintage deli feel that's part of its charm. It was clean, busy, and surprisingly well organized. Our server was knowledgeable, friendly, and able to answer all of our questions about the menu. We ordered the famous #19 pastrami with coleslaw and the #44 grilled pastrami with sauerkraut. There were four of us dining, and the group was split right down the middle--two preferred the #19, while my friend and I thought the #44 was the winner. Either way, it's safe to say the sandwiches are excellent and there's likely an option that will appeal to everyone. The prices were also more reasonable than I expected. The pastrami was perfectly seasoned, cooked just right, and sliced generously. Every bite lived up to the reputation. I've always questioned "nippy cheese". What is it? What makes it "nippy"? Langer's is known for their best-in-the-west sublime-tasting pastrami, but on a whim we got their grilled Nippy cheese. We got the grilled nippy cheese on sourdough -- the bread is our only deviation from what a standard grill cheese sandwich is supposed to be: kraft singles on white-as-hayull bread, grilled to a golden brown, in butter, on a scorching-hot, flat cooking surface. The grilled nippy cheese here is the platonic ideal of what a grilled cheese sandwich should be. 1) The sandwich had the perfect golden-hued grilled color. 2) The cheese inside was the perfect ooey-gooey consistency. 3) The ration of bread to cheese was perfect. What was most surprising was the fact that this "nippy cheese" is from Kraft. Apparently, Nippy Cheese is what American cheese was called in the 1900s. This sandwich was so good I had to ask about the cheese. I expected the cheese to be some special-ass processed cheese-food from some specialty niche vintage supplier in Wisconsin. Nope! When a cashier asked, the cook said it was Kraft (Kraft singles is the only cheese appropriate for a standard grilled cheese sandwich, FYI) What this means is this sandwich was prepared perfectly. I'm from out of work and was with a group that really wanted to try this place. I was really surprised that a deli had pescatarian options. We went around 11am and there wasn't a line yet, but by 11:30am it started to get busier and there was a small line. The staffing, service and efficiency were on point. Our server, Kevin, was nice and took good care of us. I ordered the lox, egg & onion scramble with a side of potatoes. It seems like most people come here for lunch and, obviously, for the meat. My meal was fairly bland. I did get a side of the house green salsa and that helped. It was definitely not up to the same level as the pastrami though. I personally wouldn't come back myself, but I would go if someone I was with really wanted to come. Overall, this seems like a great place. What can I say about Langer's Deli that hasn't already been said? It's a true LA landmark that serves some of the best pastrami in the country. Every time I visit, I order the #19: thick, hand-cut pastrami piled high on double-baked rye bread that's soft inside with a perfectly crunchy crust. It comes with Russian dressing and housemade slaw. The combination is absolutely outstanding. I'm also a big fan of their pastrami chili fries. The location across from MacArthur Park is rough. You'll see drug addicts in zombie-like states right outside the windows and open drug deals happening on the street. Was it good? Yes. Was it the "one" sandwich to eat if you are in Los Angeles? I don't think so. If you haven't tried the pastrami on toasted egg bread you don't know what you are missing. It's my preferred way to enjoy their signature sandwich as the hand sliced cured pastrami is undisturbed. This LA institution has been on my checklist of places to eat for a while now. It was our first stop on a recent road trip. Langer's Delicatessen is located in the Westlake neighborhood of downtown LA, diagonally across from MacArthur Park. Apparently, this area used to be a lot nicer, but it's rather downtrodden now with plenty of transients hanging around the park. I love that there's a dedicated parking lot just a block away. You have to spend a minimum of $5 to get 60 minutes of validated time. The place was surprisingly empty when we arrived for lunch. We were told by a customer at a neighboring table that the patronage was less today because of Hanukkah. For a 78-year old business, the inside of this old-school diner did not look its age. A menu with four pages and no photos was given to us. There were plenty of choices, but what I didn't like was how the offerings were organized. All of the numbered sandwiches should have been listed in order to make it easier to follow instead of bouncing across the pages. My friend ordered the #19 which was what they are known for. This was hand cut hot pastrami, cole slaw, Swiss cheese, and Russian dressing on double-baked rye bread. I selected the #54 which was the pastrami and corned beef combo, however I asked for it to be prepared in the #19 way. That added cole slaw, Swiss cheese, and Russian dressing as toppings and cost an extra three dollars on top of the whopping $32 price tag. The plates were brought to our table pretty quickly. What really stood out was how moist the pastrami was. The rye bread was probably the best I have tasted as not only was it very soft, but the rye flavor was mild compared to other delis. A whole dill pickle came with my sandwich. I only finished half of mine and saved the other portion for leftovers. We paid our check at the service counter and then took the validated ticket to the parking lot attendant as we left. Place lives up to its name. Having a recent Dec trip to Katz's in NYC, I think both institutions co exist in their respective environments. Katz is salty, unabashedly old world style. Big portions of meat served thru cafeteria style. Langer's is more genteel with table service ordering with less meat but healthier sandwich style (due to the Cole slaw veggies!). Rye bread is also tops as everyone noted. I believe I can finish the #19 in one sitting (but since I m eating it at 9 am since I couldn't fit it in, has eaten only 1/2. Iconic place in the heart of a part of LA that has seen better days although it is a convenient 1/2 block walk from the metro station. The minute you walk through the door you are transported to a time gone by. I felt like I was in a diner from the 1970s. Although the place is much older. They are celebrating their 79th birthday. I love the accompaniments of cole slaw and the dressing since it adds an extra layer of flavor and balance to the fatty and savory meat. One thing that is 100% better here vs Katz's is the bread. The Langer's rye bread holds its own and never broke apart even with some of the wet elements in the sandwich. The pastrami had a great tender texture, but I do think that it could have been a bit more salted/flavorful. It was more mild than what I would have liked and so the flavor of the coleslaw+russian dressing took more of the spotlight. The staff were friendly, funny and efficient. We ordered two French fries for the table to share. The sandwiches are large and hearty - big enough to share. Most of our party took home the other half of the sandwich! My husband and I ordered to share: Pastrami with Swiss cheese on rye. The pastrami was so flavorful, not too salty and fork tender. We didn't order #19 as it was too busy for me. Fried egg sandwich with bacon and cheddar on sourdough. That hit the spot! The individual items worked well together. I would definitely order this again! Side of coleslaw. It reminds me of KFC coleslaw and I really like KFC coleslaw. While the resto is not in the best part of town, if you visit during the day, you won't really notice. Once you're inside, then you're whisked back in time enjoying an old school pastrami sandwich and sipping a cream soda. The parking lot is about a block away. Parking is 90-min free with validation. People say this place has the best pastrami EVER. So let's see if they're pretty good eh or ew. I got their iconic pastrami sando number 19. Service was quick and efficient. The sando came on perfectly soft, pillowy rye bread with a still crispity crunchy crust, sweet crunchy fresh coleslaw, tangy Swiss cheese and Russian dressing that all helped to balance out that beautifully thick hand cut rich umami savory tender pastrami. Langer's Delicatessen is a true diamond in the rough. This Jewish deli has been serving delicious pastrami and other deli eats to the southern California community. Unfortunately throughout the years the neighborhood has been in decline and the surrounding area has gotten sketch. Mr. Langer has made efforts to work with the city to support improvements to the area, but the city is truly failing him. They have a private parking. Look up Langer's Parking for a private lot about a block away. The restaurant is well staffed, clean, and you get tell Mr. Langer puts so much love into this business. He was there managing the business even until closing on a Saturday evening. The booths look like they have been recently upgraded. We were seated in Sue's section and she took good care of us the whole time. My boyfriend and I shared a Pastrami sandwich ($25.50) and a Potato Salad ($5). We also wanted a soup and saw that there was a Combination of Two ($2) option and thought that would be 2 smaller soups so we got the Matzo Ball and Cabbage. Sue was so nice she had the kitchen cut the sandwich in half and on separate plates for us. Also we were surprised that the matzo ball was IN the cabbage soup and not like two separate soups like a sampler. Since it was our mistake we were more than happy to eat it, but Sue was nice enough to insist that we got what we wanted so she replaced it with a Matzo ball in chicken broth. Yum! The pastrami was so delicious. It had the perfect amount of fattiness. The rye bread was very specialized and high quality. The crust was crunchy and the middle was soft. It was perfect for the pastrami. I have so much respect for the Langers and this entire establishment. Management and staff all seem so passionate and caring. I saw staff wipe down another booth and it was meticulous cleaning of the table and even the chair. I normally avoid sketchy areas but I would come back here for more pastrami sandwiches and matzo ball soups. I would just prepare my outfit of the day to be more defensive and without my nice jewelry. I hope the city can do a better job improving this area, especially when they have such a caring advocate who wants to help the neighborhood. read more

If you're looking for an authentic old school deli experience with outstanding food and service make a trip to Langer's. This was maybe the best pastrami on rye I've ever had. The fries were outstanding too! Please note the parking lot for Langer's is a short walk from the restaurant. At the writing of this review they validated for one hour with purchase and only accepted cash as payment for the time after the hour. Langer's also has shorter hours and usually closes at 4 pm so give them a call to check if they're open when you want to go. Came by today for a Pastrami sandwich (#10) on rye. Wow! The meat is so tender and flavorful! The bread is really soft too. I also added a side of fries. They were cooked well and was a nice addition to the sandwich. Service was good. Our server was helpful explaining the menu and attentive. This place can get jam oacked. I got here at noon. Great experience. I'll be honest, I'm a north easterner originally and in my mind there was no substitute for a NY Jewish Deli. But...I saw this place on an episode of Lincoln Lawyer a few days before my LA trip so I figured why not. Cheesy I know, but I don't care. I'm glad I did it. It was an early lunch for me and the counter had plenty of room. So I bellied up and was promptly met by Frank, an experienced, knowledgeable and friendly server. He guided me through the main stays and was very attentive. He was also full of interesting trivia questions, which I loved. Mushroom barley soup and the classic #19 were fantastic. It's not a cheap venture but either is NY and quite frankly you get what you pay for. After all, I'm not in LA all the time and I definitely don't (and can't) eat like that all the time. I still have to try Katz deli and Larder, but this is the best pastrami sandwich I've ever had. I might even consider this the best sandwich I've ever had so far. The pastrami is hand cut thick, which makes a big difference. The meat is juicy and has the perfect taste and texture. There might be slightly too much slaw, but it provides good balance against the rich, juicy pastrami. The bread is perfect. The inner portion is soft, while the outer crust is nice and crispy. It was the one thing that really surprised me most about the sandwich. The service was great. Everyone was very friendly and the food was brought out quickly. The interior is old school and original.
