I went to school in Bozeman, and was living in Mullan hall just a stone's throw from the Pickle Barrel. Later I moved over to 7th and was another stone's throw. I ended up working near the one in Rockin R for a while. I think I ate one of their sandwiches every other week for about 7 years. Now I've moved to the city. I've considered driving 1000 miles back there on some weekends to get my fix. There was a glimmer of hope when a search said there was one in Seattle, but after going to the location and finding out it was only an office building pretty much ruined my day. I recommend a half cheese steak with a bottle of root beer at the one by campus. Get a pickle, don't slam the squeeky door, sit outside, enjoy getting sauce all over, take your time, then go get some ice cream afterwards. Great, now I'm hungry. Went here for a quick dinner for my girlfriend and I since it was close to the school. In the middle of the night I was woken up to her complaining about her stomach hurting and tried to make her comfortable how I could. The next morning I also woke up with a very sour stomach and ended up with food poisoning, throwing up for the next two days. The MSU location is smaller than the others but it has a decent amount of outdoor seating. I am not sure why they are getting 3 stars from other reviewers. Great big sandwiches, although $13 is steep for a full size sandwich. The halves are still large enough for a satisfying meal. The cheesesteaks are the best meal you can get there, and their various daily soups are also very good. My only issue is that the ingredients they use are pretty cheap and you can taste that when getting a cold sandwich that doesn't have any overpowering cheeses or sauces on it. read more

I went to school at MSU years ago and the one thing I miss is the Pickle Barrel. When ever I come home to Helena, my husband and I always take a road trip to Bozeman for a sandwich at the Pickle Barrel. I love their cold sandwiches and the cheese steaks. I like the place, a small selection of sandwiches - mostly very fresh and some hot sandwiches. Better than Subway and Jimmy Johns. Large portions (two people can share a half sandwich easily). A half sandwich usually costs like $7.50-ish. It's a very small college town informal family owned place, little sitting, not always super clean. I have had the Philly cheese (which is a bit to greasy) and the chicken salad sandwich. The service is rough at times, but that's what you get in a college town. The bread is thick and very filling - not great tasting and not as fresh as the fillings. It's the weakest part of their sandwich and keeps me from giving them a five star rating. Yum!! Perfect sandwich place for a cold day! Definitely a small establishment but it still has delicious food! I got a 1/4 Italian sandwich with soup. The portions were generous and the soup was chicken and wild rice, my meal also came with a drink. I wouldn't say this place was bad, but I wouldn't say it was great either. You definitely get more bang for your buck, but the sandwiches are just slapped together. There really is no refinement to your 'wiches. We had the chicken curry and the mushroom steak. All was flavorful and filling. A lot of food though and very messy. If you're ok with limited options (especially in bread) and want something hearty, cheap and quick, then this place is perfect. But if you're on a health-kick and want some multi-grain bread, then don't bother. Also, definitely just get a half sandwich. These things are huge! read more
