I've honestly never written a review before but had to with this place. Cute name, but that's where the goodness ends. It must be illegal to post a sign that says tourists aren't welcome, otherwise, I assume they would do that. If you're a local, the staff will be pleasant and folksy with you. I witnessed that in the forty minutes it took to get our food and eat as quickly as we could so we could leave. If you're one of the 5+million tourists that visit the Cape, let me tell you, you aren't welcome. Even if you felt you were, the staff jokes with the locals after you leave, as I witnessed when they were joking about the "tourists from Connecticut" that left before we did. The woman taking orders began complaining to other customers and staff how difficult the family was because they wanted separate checks. This was the same woman who gave us attitude for asking for mustard after our burger was delivered and not when we ordered it. She was further irritated when I asked for ketchup for my daughter's fries (she literally slammed the fridge door when she pulled the ketchup out.) Although I feared her response, I also had to ask for silverware. So, ok, dismal service. Food...nothing special. $30 for a hotdog, burger, chicken tenders, and two waters. Not outrageous for the Cape, but if I'm going to patronize someone's place of business, I expect to be treated with, at a minimum, a basic level of service. In a diner-like establishment such as the Picnic Box I wasn't expecting much but I did expect to be treated as every other paying customer and not discriminated against for being from out of town. Owner: After the "separate checks" customer left, stating she was going to write a review of the place, the woman taking orders called someone (I assume it was you) to warn them of the impending poor review. That customer did nothing wrong; she was courteous and kept it professional until your staff provoked a negative, but still cool-headed response. There are far too many places on the Cape that offer a pleasant atmosphere, better tasting/comparably priced food, and terrific service. There is no need to support a place like the Picnic Box. They reinforce the "it's us against them" attitude that is far too prevalent these days in our society. I don't need to come across it while enjoying my vacation. read more

My Father goes here once or twice a week. I go once a month. I find the food excellent! Crispy bacon, awesome Linguiça, incredible omelettes, low carb friendly options. I do not know why people post negative reviews other than the fact people tend to post negative experiences more frequently than positive. This a a local breakfast, lunch and tradespeople lunch takeout restaurant. If you are looking for a fancy touristy breakfast go to the Seacrest or The Cape Club restaurant. read more

I've been driving by the Picnic Box for quite some time, thinking it was just a sandwich shop. What I found was more. The menu has a number of seafood items like scallops, fish, etc. Homemade Meatloaf was the special on the day I visited, and there are a number of other entree choices. There's also a full breakfast menu. I left with a Crabby Patty and a Fish Sandwich to go. Both were basic but quite tasty. The fish sandwich was especially good, not at all greasy, yeah! The cook offered a couple of home-made, still warm chocolate chip cookies to go with the sandwiches, which I gladly accepted. As a breakfast place this is subpar. It seems like a local hangout spot that is frequented more for the conversation than the food. The menu is small and the prices were somewhat high for the quality. The place was full of retired men arguing about politics and talking about their football bets. Lousy food, horrible service. It's busy on Sunday mornings, if you don't like your customers you should go into another business. Overheard the owner come out of the kitchen and say nasty things about the customers who are paying his bills! Had an over cooked dry omelette. Don't bother to go here. Our bill was $10 more than the calculation according to the menu. When I tried to speak to someone about this, I was totally blown off! She just yeah, yeah, I will let the owner know. We walked into the restaurant and it was very crowded with minimal seating. We quickly realized that this was a place for locals to gather. Nobody acknowledged us or led us to seating. (We learned after it's a seat yourself restaurant). After sitting at the only available table, which was closest to the door, we were finally approached by the only woman working there. She rudely asked what we wanted to eat but there were not any menus in front of us. We were expected to read the menu off of the walls! When she approached us again we ordered a steak and cheese sub and a clam roll. We also got two drinks. The sub was good. The clam roll was disgusting. It was all bellies. The woman at the table next to us even commented on the clams and how gross they were. We both agreed that in the past the clams were much better! We prefer clam strips! When we were finished we had to go up to the register to pay. The woman working the register put me on the spot and expected me to tip on my card. Why would I tip when the service was unacceptable and my food was awful?! We were very disappointed with our trip to the Picnic Box and will NOT be returning. read more

This place was a horrendous experience. Do not give them your business. We were treated with no respect-passed over by the hostess blatantly and then once seated or more so shooed into a small room, we were ignored while all the tables that were seated after us were attended to immediately. The waitresses looked right at us and ignored us... Might I add we're an interracial couple and they seemed pretty darn aware of it - may I say racist. Needless to say we left without spending any of our money there. And you shouldn't either. And beyond service it also was very dingy, dark and mildewy. There's even a sign that says beware of angry waitresses, which from what i saw seemed correct and also means they've accepted that it's their place and they can treat patrons as they please.... read more
