I stumbled upon Picnic Cafe a few days ago in search of a new spot to get a tea, and I have to say that I am impressed! It's the true definition of a hidden gem, nestled comfortably inside of the Inn on Bellevue, a quaint boutique inn located just steps away from scenic and historic downtown Newport. I stepped inside to see a wide array of coffee and tea beverages available on a charming chalkboard menu, and a tantalizing array of both sweet and savory offerings, everything from Danishes and French pastries to squares of homemade pizza. While I just got a peach unsweetened iced tea, I look forward to returning soon to try some of the tasty menu, which also included heartier offerings like sandwiches and salads. The tea itself was very good, and comparable in price to other tea shops in the neighborhood. While it was unsweetened, it did have a very strong peach flavor, unlike some of the other unsweetened varieties, which are pretty much flavorless. They also offer unsweetened raspberry tea and black tea as well. I am a huge tea drinker, so I'll surely be back for the other kinds soon! Picnic Cafe is reminiscent of a sweet little cafe in Paris, with friendly counter service and modest but clean and well decorated seating for guests. If you need more space, the cafe is adjacent to the lobby of the Inn on Bellevue, where you can sit and sip your drink while poring over an issue of Newport Life magazine or people watching the many interesting folks who are staying here. A teeny, tiny cafe nestled in between some inns and across from Hotel Viking, this little place has everything you need for breakfast, lunch and coffee. There are some bar seats and a few tables in the back and a clean bathroom. Prices were on par with Newport. They had such a wide variety of fun pastries (cakes, tortes, cookies, brownies, croissants, oh my!) they also have espresso beverages and regular coffee along with pre-made breakfast and lunch options. Some cute touches were picnic baskets for sale as well as a few gift ideas like European chocolates and a variety of jams. This is a great stop if you're walking around town, staying somewhere close, or need food for the beach later! read more

Terrible, almost misleading place. Ordered a chicken salad sandwich. Chicken salad is not chopped chicken, it's chicken from a food processor, tastes like bad grade school cafeteria chicken salad. Says it's got tarragon - no flavor from tarragon. Comes with potato salad and coke slaw. Potato salad tastes like it came out of a can - no flavor and gooey. It seems like a nice shop on the outside but food tastes like it was prepared in the deli section of a major food chain. Don't waste your money. Big disappointment read more

My husband and I walk by this little spot almost daily. Today was a beautiful sunny fall day so on our way back from our fitness walk we decided to stop for drinks. He got a latte and I had a hot chai. Drinks were delicious and smooth. Just the right amount of froth on top. We sat outside at one of their tables which resemble the cafe tables and chairs in Paris. We are visiting from Texas and found this great spot in Newport with seating inside and out. It may look really small but it actually has a hidden room in the back with a separate entrance. There are tables and chairs in a comfy setting. It has a coffee shop vibe but their deli sandwiches are top notch. And the sandwiches come with both potato salad and coleslaw. My husband ordered a roasted chicken sandwich and we shared it. They do put a LOT of spring mix lettuce on the sandwiches, so much that it literally falls out the sides and makes the sandwich fall apart. Not really a complaint from me because I love the greens but might be an issue for others. We also bought an oatmeal raisin cookie on the way out. It was overly sweet and too dry for me. I might try the chocolate peanut butter cup cookie next time because it looked really good. If I lived nearby, I'd definitely be a regular. read more

Roasted: this place Picnic is in Newport RI in the downtown area not far from the wharf. Had really good reviews so wanted to check this place out. It was a little busy for a Saturday morning but service was incredibly slow. We waited outside in line for over 10 minutes. Service was fine - they were nice but not engaging at all. They have a few syrup options but the sugar free options are just odd - pumpkin caramel and maple bourbon. My mocha was all foam - atleast 40% was foam so that automatically ruined the drink for me. It was ok - mocha was not very flavorful and tasted more like hit chocolate. No latte art. They asked if we were staying here but everything came out in to go containers? I wouldn't come back here - I'd seek out another coffee shop next time I'm in Newport. Unroasted: small cafe attached to a hotel which is a great way to make new customers. Small shop with seating in the back and tons of food options. Ordered my latte and it was just okay. Nothing special about it. It was drinkable atleast. read more

My wife and I are especially fond of their Danish bread, which is something that is not easy to find here in the States. They make it, and it's incredible, just like what we had over in Denmark! Went to Picnic looking for scones, but not on the menu. That was OK because they have lots of other baked goods to choose from. For a small establishment they have an extensive breakfast and lunch menu. No seating inside but cute 2 seat tables outside in the morning shade. A fresh (big) croissant and a good latte made a nice light breakfast to start the day. Came back Sunday morning after Tracy the owner informed me there is on site sitting for 12 in the back. I had mistaken that area as part of the adjoining boutique hotel. So today I went with the blueberry turnover and a large latte, sitting in the cute room in the back. I happened upon this place while I was out for a run, and immediately knew it is where I wanted to get my lunch today. My husband and I walked from our hotel (The Marriott) it's just over 1/2 mile. You've got to walk in Newport- otherwise you really miss out! We both ordered the Ham Cheese Croissants, his with an egg, mine without! A couple bags of chips and two enormous cookies, and we grabbed a bistro table outside. Solid croissant, they aren't baked with the ham and Swiss- they add it and warm them, so they are truly sandwich style. The oatmeal raisin cookie was the winner over the triple chocolate IMO. They have a handful of bistro tables outside and some limited inside dining. It's unfortunate I could only get one entree, as their menu really looked great. Everything from coffee and pastries to hamburgers and lobster rolls. Needed a quick bite after walking the entirety of the Cliff Walk. Choosing this place was a mistake. I ordered a lobster roll. About 10 mins after I ordered, they told me that they were out of a key ingredient for my order. I was disappointed, but no problem. I was so hungry at that point that anything would've been fine. The barista said she'd refund me after the crowd died down. But the crowd never died down, and I was realllllly hungry. After about 10 more mins, I went up to the crowded register and asked if I had to wait in the long line to get my refund. The barista looked irritated and said emphatically, "YES." So I waited yet another 10 mins. By that time I was so hungry and irritated that I couldn't really enjoy the food. I was sore and tired from the walk, and just wanted to sit down and eat a bite, not stand uncomfortably for 1/2 an hour while the harried barista glared at me. read more

This place is hit or miss. I do come here often as it's right around the corner of my house. I do love their almond croissants. When they're fresh they're the best around. This is the second time I've eaten here and I was so surprised to see they were still using so much plastic containers for people eating in. Be prepared to make your own avocado toast. Menu says multigrain toast, avocado, arugula, tomato and pickled onion. I was served hard white toast, a half of an unripe avocado, iceberg lettuce, a slice of a pink beefsteak tomato and slice of raw red onion. Complete with cheap plastic flatware, the likes of 7-11. They expect you to make this yourself. WHY???? I had to go back to the counter 3 times because they looked at me like I was insane when I pointed out the differences to the actual menu description. Avocado everywhere, never got pickled onion or whole grain bread. The worst breakfast I have ever had. I make this at home all the time. It takes 5 minutes. Why can't they just make a proper restaurant style avocado toast? My daughter ordered something that she took 2 bites of and threw the rest out. Just awful AND EXPENSIVE! read more

Coming back to give Picnic a 4 star review. I'm not sure if they're under new management or not, but I feel like their quality has definitely gone up recently. I've had their tuna salad sandwich and their blt, both delicious. I wish they offered French fries but I understand they have a small kitchen so this probably isn't possible. Their cookies are still hard as rocks so that's a bummer, but otherwise I've been really happy with the sandwiches recently. read more

We went here for lunch and we sat in a hot, charming dining area with no air conditioning because the outdoor seating was taken. My friend got a salmon sandwich and loved it. I got the falafel salad and the falafel was excellent but the lettuce was lifeless, old, inedible, chewy, ill tasting and the salad dressing was bitter and sweet. I ate the three tiny pieces of falafel and threw away the $12 salad. We got chocolate chip cookies for later but because I was still hungry, I ate it while there. They had been sitting out too long in the heat and were slightly soggy but tasted Ok. We said we would eat in the hotel lobby area where the restaurant is located but our food was put in take-away containers. The tiniest restroom was available for use but nothing available to dry your hands. I wouldn't want to eat here again but my friend would. read more

I don't think my experience was a very favorable one. In August 2020 ( I know a little late in finishing my post), celebrating a great event we decided to take a low key lunch so we saw the picnic, which would have fit into our schedule and theme. Ordered my sandwich, asked for italian ham, with fresh mozzarella cheese and balsamic vinegar on the side. when i opened the bag, no vinegar and when i looked at the sandwich there was one piece of italian ham. WHAT A DISGRACE !! all that money i paid for that lunch and i wanted to throw up to think how they screwed me. took my money and gave me what would be equivalent to a bun that someone took the fillings and handed the bread to someone to eat. A tiny little bakery and hands down the best almond croissant I've ever had. In my "everyday life" I eat pretty much Paleo, indulging on the occasional treat. This croissant was light and flaky and absolutely the right choice - perfectly filled with almond paste, buttery and topped with just-toasted sliced almonds.
